“We’ve Lived That Nightmare Before”

October 10th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

When Joe railed about last year’s secondary and players like the bottle of cologne, cornerback Pierre Desir, and washed out Richard Sherman, some fans called Joe an A-hole and worse.

Backups Desir and Sherman joined Ross Cockrell to take more than 800 Bucs snaps at corner and safety last season — 800! — and now they are among the NFL unemployed in 2022.

Fast-forward to the Buccaneers Radio Network pregame show yesterday and general manager Jason Licht was lauded, rightfully so, for the Bucs being so damn deep in the secondary this season that former starter Sean Murphy-Bunting has been coming off the bench.

“We’ve lived that nightmare before,” Licht said, referring to the lack of defensive backs depth in past seasons.

So take that, fans who slapped Joe around for being so critical of the secondary last season.

Murphy-Bunting started for injured Logan Ryan (foot) yesterday against Atlanta, and ironically cornerback Carlton Davis and Mike Edwards suffered injuries in the game, as did Murphy-Bunting. It’s unclear how serious any of these issues are.

Injury updates should emerge later today or on Wednesday. For now, there’s no nightmare.

Update: Todd Bowles said this afternoon that Edwards should be fine. And Davis told Sage JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman that he’s fine, as well.

Neal did a good job at safety as well!
    Glad we signed him!

  2. Coburn Says:

I thought I heard dean was out later in the game as well? Did I hear that wrong? I was pretty sure I saw both McCollum and Delaney out there

  3. Richbucsfan Says:

Agreed, but now we have a new nightmare…the Bucs D are bored. Imagine that! Haven’t heard much about that today.

  4. Goatfarmer Says:

We have enough injuries on offense, now the defensive strength of the team is once again riddled with injuries. Meanwhile, at least we are one of the worst run defending teams in the NFL.

    Good golly.

  5. Tony Says:

They definitely need to consider another OL, DE, DT, CB, S, & WR in the draft. Then depending on what they wanna do at QB & TE, too! Depending on what goes on with Brady & Gisele & if they do end up going their own way I could see him coming back.

  6. AbucAway Says:

    Our Joe’s, the aholes. Haha

  7. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Coburn, Dean played 100% of the defensive snaps.

My comment regarding this seems to have disappeared twice when trying to reply so if multiples appear that is why.

  8. Buczilla Says:

I wouldn’t be touting any aspect of our defense after kc treated our defensive players like children and atlanta ran the ball down our throats. We are a mediocre football team right now and the only thing that our defensive players deserve is some tough love.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

A-hole is the nicest thing a lot of people have called you Joe. When they hatin you know you’re doing something right lol. Keep up the good work.

  10. adam from ny Says:

you might not want to hear his, but the real issue is we are getting a little worse by the week…

    -cowboys game we were ok
-saints, it got a little worse
    -packers, we weren’t good
-chiefs treated us like whipping boys
-atlanta was a big time downhill slope

    we are progressively getting worse…

we are getting a little worse as a whole each week…

now we go to pitt and they suck, but tomlin has fire in the belly and the eyes…

    things our coach doesn’t have…

so if we get beat in pittsburgh, it ain’t good for coach and how he’s bringing this team along

    It’s Zion time!!!

  12. captivajim Says:

Licht has plenty of cap room if he wants to bring in Suh & he could make more room getting rid of dead wood ; Rudolf, Jones, Darden, Hicks , Bernard.

who knows , maybe if he wanted to try -there could be some other better talent out there -really better .

  13. Hodad Says:

Just don’t sign an old DB with injury concerns. See Hicks, Jones.

  14. unbelievable Says:

    Good to hear about Edwards.

Need Davis and Ryan back too.

  15. orlbucfan Says:

Seconded about Edwards. Breathing a sigh of relief.

  16. Mike Says:

We need our players to stay healthy! Your best ability is availability!
