More Snaps For Anthony Nelson And Carl Nassib? Todd Bowles Wouldn’t Rule It Out

October 15th, 2022

Outside linebacker Anthony Nelson.

Unless something happens to the Bucs roster that Joe does not expect between now and March, Joe doesn’t expect Anthony Nelson to be in Tampa next season.

That’s no knock on Nelson. But he’s in a contract year and he’s caught in a log jam at outside linebacker. If Nelson gets an offer to start for another team and make starter’s money, how could anyone blame him if he wants to get paid?

And Nelson isn’t the only underrated Bucs outside linebacker. Carl Nassib, too, plays well in the Bucs’ defense. He always seems to be around the ball.

Yesterday, Todd Bowles was asked since Nelson and Nassib are making solid contributions, might they get more snaps? Bowles wouldn’t commit to it but he sure didn’t deny the possibility as he raved about their play.

“Oh, it’s big to have four [outside linebackers] to rotate in there, so if somebody goes down you have guys that [have] played in games and [are] capable of starting,” Bowles said. “So, [they] sub each other pretty [well].

“We don’t have a set time to put Carl and Nelson in there but we’re comfortable when we put them in there regardless of situation.”

Strong depth at such a key spot is critical, and Joe suspects that will show up later in the season as Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka will have fresher legs than usual.

In a way, Joe doesn’t want to see Nelson and Nassib’s snap counts spike. Because that would mean either JTS and Shaq are hurt or they aren’t getting the job done.

Nelson has to be depressed sitting behind that fraud JTS.

and that is how we gonna win, play the hot hand! If Nelson blows up then he gets play and JTS and Carl can sit and watch

    JTS is on thin ice

Curious about the stats when JTS and Shaq are on the field vs. when Nassib and Nelson are.
I’m not gonna try and look it up. It’s Saturday lol.

JTS is playing well for a second year player, and first time starter. Don’t know what some of you expect considering where he is in his career. I see steady improvement.

  6. Bojim Says:

Nelson deserves more snaps. Go for the money!!

  7. Hunter's Crack Pipe Says:

If Shaq doesn’t play, Nelson has a big opportunity. His per-snap stats have always been impressive, but it’s hard to judge by that, as I don’t track the situations that he has been used in. These situations may have been advantageous for him. I don’t think we’ve ever seen him get starter snaps.

I’m fine with Nassib or sneaks on taking snaps from JTS if they’re more effective. Especially in the run game.

But none of those 3 compare to a healthy JPP, sadly.

    Nelson or Nassib*

    JTS is STILL A BUST.

  11. FrontFour Says:

Nelson always seems to make plays off the bench and more often in passing situations. Would like to see how he handles the run. JTS still doesn’t get he has to seal the edge.
