How Bad Is The Bucs Offense?

October 27th, 2022

Sinking offense.

What Joe is about to type is as mindblowing as it gets.

The Bucs have scored one touchdown in the last 10 quarters of play against losing teams. Just on face value without any further intel, that is galling.

Then you throw in the Bucs have a healthy Tom Brady, a guy who last year led the NFL in passing and touchdowns thrown, the greatest quarterback who ever lived.

Flanking him is a wide receiver by the name of Mike Evans, who Joe believes will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On the other side of the field is a Pro Bowl receiver, Chris Godwin. In the backfield is a former fourth-overall pick in the draft, Playoff Lenny.

And the Bucs cannot score. Is this some weird Stephen King movie? Is this a Monty Python skit?

Led by failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, the star-studded offense is right up there with the dregs of the NFL.

The Bucs average 17.7 points a game, tied for fifth-worst in the NFL. One team the Bucs are tied with is the lousy Lovie Smiths, who just dumped former Bucs receiver Tyler Johnson this week.

Also, the Bucs are tied with the team they just lost to, the Stinking Panthers, an offense led by an XFL refugee with just one receiver to speak of.

One team the Bucs are worse than in scoring (barely) is the Bears. The Bears! A team notorious for its tradition of trash offenses.

The Bucs are also scoring just a hair worse than another punchless offense, the Washington Commandos.

Hell, the Dixie Chicks running a glorified 1960s college offense are much better offensively than the Bucs. How is it Pete Carroll and Brian Daboll and Dan Campbell and Kevin Stefanski (!) can figure out how to have much better offenses with only a fraction of the talent Leftwich has to work with?

Meanwhile, the Leftwich-led Bucs are going backwards. They’ve scored 21, 18 and 3 points in the past three games, respectively. With Brady at quarterback, that’s downright criminal!

Imagine if your last name is “Glazer.” All the resources and cash you have shoveled into that offense for (likely) one final run at glory with Brady, and this is what you get?

Joe swears if Leftwich pulls his usual Playoff Lenny run up the gut for a one-yard loss to start the game tonight, 80 percent of Bucs fans in the stadium, at bars, at home will become this guy and mentally check out.

Oh it’ll happen. And honestly, what has happened to the”Ole Reliable” Mike Evans in the redzone automatic touchdown play? We had one that I recall at Dallas. Vintage Mike. I must be missing something right?

  2. Howard Cosell Says:

Is this some weird Stephen King movie? Is this a Monty Python skit?

It’s actually a combination of the two.
    Horrifying yet comedic

  3. Steven007 Says:

Classy, making fun of a stroke victim. How’s the air up there on your high horse?

  4. JP Says:

May be time to wear the brown bag over my head at the game tonight !

  5. Howard Cosell Says:

Normally Howard would stay home for Thurs Bucs game but tomorrow Howard is going to the local craft brew. He may glance at the TV out of the corner of his eye and smirk

  6. Howard Cosell Says:

It’s going to be a rough night for crisis call centers. Hopefully they’ll have extra staff manning the phones. Howard will do his best not to call them and tie up valuable resources

  7. Joe Says:

Classy, making fun of a stroke victim. How’s the air up there on your high horse?

Who chose to appear on live TV? Or are you suggesting he was propped up like a puppet against his will?

    Get off the Clydesdale.

  8. Tye Says:

The last game was the bottom of the barrel….

Interim HC. 4th string qb, traded away their receiver and RB, one of this seasons most losing teams and the Bucs only score 3 points!

  9. LeftwichgottagoAndBowles too Says:

Now Joe is just being a d!ck. That’s enough to send me to any other site. Stick to handegg Joe. You know precious little about that and I’m guessing even less about things that matter.

  10. steele Says:

Joe, a couple of things. It doesn’t matter who the players are if the coach and coordinators are subpar and calling bad games.

It doesn’t matter who the skill position players are, or how many “big names” are on the roster, if the offensive line (and defense) sucks.

And as for our skill position players. Brady is the greatest, but he is 45 and requires support and coaches who are genius about how to make Brady’s game work. Lenny Fournette is an eternally overrated finesse back with no explosiveness or power. Mike Evans has shrunk into “watching life go out of him” after dropping passes. Hall of Fame? I wouldn’t vote for him right now.
Godwin, the difference maker last season, is just coming back and isn’t like he was. Gage is a dud. There is no one at TE who is even close to Gronkowski.

    Not many bright spots.

  11. steele Says:

I think many of us will agree that we are sick of hearing how “elite” the roster is.
“Elite” underperformers who are improperly coached and psychologically not focused don’t produce. It is better to have great coaching and less “elite” hype talent, and coaching that gets guys to outperform.

    Fair points.

Joe, a couple of things. It doesn’t matter who the players are if the coach and coordinators are subpar and calling bad games.

Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders once wrote, “Never underestimate how a bad coach can drag down a good team.” He was spot on. The only way around that is to have as much talent as you can, the coach can only drag a team down so much.

Only way Joe can see for the Bucs not to fall into the abyss is to add talent on offense before the trade deadline.

This team could go straight off the cliff very easily, very soon.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m gonna really try to be objective and root for my Bucs tonight. But I will have a couple of libations early to numb my enthusiasm. Something tells me this could get ugly for us. Still, we will see what this team is made of. Win this game, and it could..be a turning point in the season. Lose we are 3-5 ,,and well, you get the point.

  14. Whoolio? Says:

    Steven007.
You’re an enableist. You’re enabling a political party to parade around a poor man who suffered a stroke as a prop and attacking people for saying this poor man should be at home recovering not on a debate stage and a political circuit. Noone is attacking his stroke, if anything we’re looking at his situation and praying for him to stop being put in a horrible situation by people who “support him”. However if you saw the man’s performance Tuesday night you’d either agree he’s not cognitively 100% there or you’d continue to lie to yourself and say that his inability to speak and comprehend words is just what we need in a senator. It appears you’ve chosen option #2. Anything to get you’re party a majority right? 🤡🤡

  15. HC Grover Says:

Our only hope is intervention by ‘The Great Pumpkin’

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

I am of the opinion that we just have not given Bowles enough time. All his defensive players loved him last year and he NEVER had a thing to do with offense. He probably initially never thought that there was anything wrong with it and was pretty much forced (for lack of time) to continue focusing on being a DC. Now he seems to be finding out BL is a lousy coach and so is Gilbert. He has to have some time, guys, to straighten out this team. I would freely give him 2 years to get into it. Come on..give him a break. BA thought he would do great and maybe he will.

  17. adam from ny Says:

you gotta realize there are a lot of games going on…which is bad and poisoning the team culture from the inside out…

    – the jensen injury status mystery

    – the brady check in, check out, take off when he wants to…with hidden reasons…

    – now the latest is a sort of fake goedeke injury, to swap him out for leverett, so leverett can fin out the season as the regular left guard…you just pull goedeke and say he’s not ready yet…simple…why all this bs…

    – like why on earth are they going to all these extremes for this rookie goedeke…???…like almost ready to tank the season or get tom killed back there…

    – and the julio shenannies is enough to piss off like 40 of the 53 players…

    – why all this special treatment for a dirty bird…

    – the game playing and hierarchy of this organization are dividing up the team…dudes are checking out week by week…

    – i don’t think other teams are playing all these games and charades

something is really off at one buc, and it’s getting obvious…

i can go on with numerous weird scenarios and what seems like cover ups, hidden agendas, and top secret shantytown shenannies…

the BA moving upstairs was all off…but he’s always chillin’ on his cart…

you know what i would do if i was a glazer…

i’d pull the freaky deaky move if the ravens mop up the bucs tonight…i would can both bowles and left-twitch………………….

and make lori locust the head freakin’ coach…

    and i’m being totally serious

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

BL the scapegoat the guy who never got any credit for the 2020 bucs or last year but gets all the blame for Brady not playing well. Brady almost threw 3 picks and y’all just ignore that fact lol . All y’all do is look for a scapegoat Brady was the one who got BA off the side lines. Brady was the one who wanted Kyle Rudolph, Julio Jones and Russell Gage . The bucs gave him everything he asks for and none of yall want to hold him accountable so y’all just made BL the scapegoat. Lol lol

  19. Bob in valrico Says:

It is imperative that the Bucs offense stays on the field and sustains drives. We will need to keep the Ravens punishing run game off the field since the defense
has struggled to stop the run. It also would not surprise me if Ravens throw more on us with Winfield out and the backup corners not playing well last week.

  20. SufferingSince76 Says:

Oneilbuc, at it again, huh? I almost won the lottery 3 times, but that don’t make me rich.

  21. Show Me the TDs Says:

Thanks for the article, Joe’s. In case we missed the first 3 exact same article. Geesh.

  22. Reach87 Says:

Call me a fool (or a fan), but I am rooting for the Bucs (vice tearing them down). I see minor changes (if you do them) in the running game will make a big difference (the first one was done w/ the RG move, the second one on personnel packages…we’ll see). I also see some changes on Defense that can help (if executed). Check White, David and the Safety when in the box. BL: Don’t give up on the Bucs (or go ahead and give up…thats fine). We may be playing horribly, but all goals are still in front of us. Go Bucs!

  23. Fishhawkbuc Says:

Is it me or does Byron sound like a more older, and believe it or not, more ignorant Jameis Winston?

  24. TB12 Fan Says:

The people in here mad at Joe for taking a shot at fetterman are the worst people in America. You are the reason this country is going backwards I hope you know that. It you think fetterman could perform any job let alone state senator yall kidding yourselves.

  25. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Steven007 … This is a guy running for Senate dude, they need vetted!! You really want a “stroke victim” who can’t understand when people are talking to him and needs a monitor to understand helping lead this country out of the misery it’s in … Liberals are so intelligent aren’t they!! 🙄

  26. Rayjay1122 Says:

I was always told not to judge a book by the cover. Sorry but BL shows how clueless he is written all over his face. He just has a lost expression usually when they show his mug on TV.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

The crowd needs to demand for Leftwurst to be fired. You know he’s gonna call something stupid on the first play and proceed to get stupider from there.

Let him have it Bucs fans.

Hammer the Ravens to win and for the Ravens to put up more than 30.

  28. BillyBucco Says:

    Well said Joe.
Pick a side. You can’t say it’s the coaches and the players are subpar and gutless and yada yada.
It’s Leftwich without BA, plain and simple.
Honestly, it might be Bowles without BA.
In my book, it all points to what Light assembled and BA did n 2020.
These guys are clueless running this team.

I could literally miss the game, starting now because the lust is soooooo long.
Not throwing the ball past the goal line is one of them.
