Where Should Jason Licht And Bruce Arians Be?

September 19th, 2022

Sideline involvement.

A lot of chatter is going around the interwebs about former Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and their appearances on the Bucs’ sidelines yesterday.

Some of that is because Arians was visible on television yelling at officials.

Todd Bowles shed light on this in his day-after presser this afternoon.

Per Bowles, the slimy Saints did not offer a “box,” meaning a booth or a suite, for Bucs front office personnel to sit in. Therefore, Arians was on the sidelines.

The “box” issue with the slimy Saints is odd in that at the Superdome, the press box is often the highest section along the sidelines, not a booth or a box. In years past at the Superdome, this is where Licht and his staff often sat (and the same is the case with many road games).

At Dallas, it appeared Bucs suits had their own suite or box.

For many road games — but not all — the Bucs’ front office staff sits in the press box. Since Arians is part of the Bucs’ front office staff, it is interesting that he was relegated to the sidelines yesterday.

Now Joe knows that beginning with the 2020 season, due to The Sickness, Bucs types were segregated from Fourth Estate and the public due to virus protocols established between the NFL and the NFLPA.

Licht took this opportunity to stand on the sidelines during games and from what Joe understands, Licht enjoyed that angle to study players and now often can be found there during games.

Before the 2020 season, NFL front office personnel were encouraged (ordered) by the league not to be on the sidelines during games, though it was common to see them there in the waning moments of a game.

Of course, good luck telling an owner he can’t be on his team’s sideline in the final moments of the game. Artie Blank and Jerry Jones are two perfect examples of this.

  1. Kentucky Buc Says:

They should be wherever the fcck they want to be. It’s called being the boss.

  2. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

2-0 with fun drama instead of 0-2 with annoying drama. Great start to the season

  3. Sparky Says:

This is not really clear, and kind of conflicting with itself. Were Licht and BA on the sidelines because they wanted to be, or because the Saints gave them nowhere else to sit?

  4. Joe Says:

This is not really clear, and kind of conflicting with itself.

Bowles said the slimy Saints did not offer a “box.” (Joe thinks that is fairly clear.)

Therefore it was sidelines or go to a bar and watch the game on TV.

  5. Biff Barker Says:

The Superdome is another spithole in a sewer of a city.

  6. DungyDance Says:

Agree with Sparky. If they gave them nowhere else to do their jobs, then what are they supposed to do? Stay out of the stadium altogether? Ha.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

If they’re not at the bar, anywhere they want!

  8. BucsfanFred Says:

I sure hope we don’t offer them one either.
Joe, do we usually offer visiting teams that courtesy?

  9. Redeemer Says:

Out of respect to Bowles, Arians should not be on the sideline. It makes it look like Bowles needs his hand held. BA should realize that, and find somewhere else to be. Hopefully it’s a one off thing.

  10. J Ghotier Says:

Your title of this article just sounds so Florio-ish

Please don’t turn into that guy Joes. Nobody likes him. Many of us are great at our job…it’s what we do outside of that and as a person that makes and defines us. I promise, Florio is near the bottom of that list and if that’s your Hero, than WHOA!

That’s such a Florio question though and it’s so silly (talking only about headline here and not article)

  11. gbobucsfan Says:

Would love to hear the excuse or reasoning as to why they didn’t get a suite.

  12. Kentucky Buc Says:

All the so-called sportscasters are on the Saints side in all this. Pretty obvious they lost money betting on the game. Some have gone so far as to cut the part where Lattimore hits Lenny from the clips they’re showing. What a joke.

  13. Guinness8 Says:

My response to Florio’s post. I figured I would post it here because he will not allow it to be posted on his comment section.

    Mike,
You should stop reporting on the Bucs, Tom Brady and BA. You have obvious bias. You should let one of your other people do these stories.
    1st.
You show your bias by disrespecting BA by trying to be funny about his position. Saying he could be assisting the traveling secretary. GTF out of here with that crap.
    2nd.
“He was doing no apparent or obvious advising of the General Manager”. What is he supposed to do, stay by his side and never leave it. Are you aware of the conversations they have after the game to discuss things or lack there of?
    3rd.
“It’s unclear whether the league can direct the Buccaneers to get Arians off the sideline, but it should. He’s no longer a member of the coaching staff.” I know there are some rules the NFL has about who can be on the sidelines and I do not know them all. The Saints did not give them a box to sit in for one. Would you like to keep all owners and GM’s off the side lines too? Your reasoning to keep him off the sideline because he is not on the coaching staff is ignorant.
    4th.
“If Arians is permitted to keep doing what he did on Sunday, every team should consider designating one specific member of the non-coaching staff to be a chronic irritant, to the officials and/or opponents and/or anyone.” I understand you have a opinion on this and that is fair but until it is deemed against the rules you should not take him to the woodshed for this. Besides do you know what he said to the ref? Maybe he was saying good call in a really angry voice 🙂

  14. Ash Says:

They are grown men if he cant handle arians being on the sidelines because of what projected perception people want to make up then bowles doesnt have the stones to be an HC which isn’t the case since this is his second go of it and he is 2 and 0.

  15. Sparky Says:

@Joe, that part was clear. You say they weren’t offered a box. But then you go on to say the Saints don’t have a box anyways, they just use rows of seats. So they weren’t even offered ANY seats?? There was no “press box” at all?

  16. Joe Says:

But then you go on to say the Saints don’t have a box anyways,

Joe also detailed in the story how Bucs brass sits in same section as media at the Superdome. Additionally Joe explained how this seemed strange.

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Government Money should never have been used to rebuild New Orleans. That shithole is way below Sea Level as it is!
Not even offering a Box for Licht and Arians to sit is but another example to that classless operation called the Saints.
Plus, I have lost a TON of the former respect I had for Mike Florio lately!

  18. Dlavid Says:

What a crock of BS! They are a part of the team and have every right to be on the sidelines. The hell with the NFL request! Don’t give the Saints front office or staff a box in the stands at Raymond James. Fire the cannons!!

  19. Goatfarmer Says:

Guiness8 — standing ovation for you, great post. And brilliant handle BTW.

    It’s for health.

Love me the pints o’ Guinness, especially in the motherland directly from her bosom.

  20. Guinness8 Says:

And as I suspected it did not pass the review process!

  21. geno711 Says:

Personally, it makes more sense to me to have Arians and Licht on the sidelines than Odell Beckham Jr with a different team each week.

If you are controlling something, then control that!

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Fire Goodell now. He’s an idiot, a horrible commissioner, and terrible at judging players’ conduct. He never gets it right. His suspension policy is garbage, money driven and completely out of whack. Please get rid of this clown, it’s time for a change.

  23. CrackWise Says:

Is there a reason I can not point out the fact Brady was messing with hie RING finger on his throwing hand as a wink and a nod to his wife?

I mean its reasonable speculation that he had a moment of mental lapse because he was thinking

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

Hahaha, how is BA supposed to do his job? What job? This guy’s is a media troll with a huge ego. Remove the senile, drunken distraction. This is Bowles team now. I finally figured it out, BA the con man committed to coaching the Bucs in 2022 for one reason to tee up Bowles. Once he found out Bowles wasn’t getting a head coach job he took the Bucs position which kept the Bucs from interviewing others, then poof, BA out Bowles in. He conned the Glaziers and Licht.

  25. CrackWise Says:

    of her

  26. CrackWise Says:

Oh my bad, I am on the wrong article!!!

  27. Dooley Says:

Wherever their sideline passes that are given to every team playing a game that day permits, both BA & Licht are employees of an NFL Franchise.

  28. Infomeplease Says:

OK, I think Joe is saying that the Bucs front office people usually sit in the press seating area along the upper sidelines when at the Superdome, because the Saints don’t offer anything else. BA and L, weren’t up there because they wanted to be on the sidelines and Joe thinks this is strange but not against any NFL rules.

  29. David Says:

Who cares? In a box or on the field, it should be up to the team

  30. Coburn Says:

Now a thread on Reddit saying there was 18 seats offered to Bucs staff. Lol silly drama

  31. Infomeplease Says:

I think Joe is strange, but also not against any NFL rules!!

  32. SKBucsFan Says:

Beating the saints is a great moment. They should be down on the sideline. I’m surprised the Glazers weren’t there.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

They should be wherever they want to be.

    Next.

  34. Marine Buc Says:

I would like him in the box.
I would like him with a fox.
I would like him in a can.
I would like him with some ham.
    I would like him here.
    I would like him anywhere.

Unlike green eggs and ham I actually like BA… Leave him alone please.

  35. AbucAway Says:

    To answer your question:

    Wherever.

  36. D-Rok Says:

LOL, Marine. Funny stuff, man. I was forced to watch/read Dr. Seuss as an orphan.

It doesn’t bother me at all if BA or anyone else the Bucs approve to be on their sideline was on their sideline. However, BA needs to quit barking at players on the other team, though….to be honest. He could’ve gotten the Bucs another penalty.

What a great game! Defensive slug-fest, boring through 3 quarters, then BAM! Fracas, melee, fights, drama, and the Bucs waking up from their slumber to slap the Aints back to Leesville and the swamps of Lousyana. (I served in the Army in LA; trust me, them swamps aint no joke).

Great, great game to witness as a fan. The Bucs just planted the flag at top of the hill and said, “Don’t screw with us.”

  37. Dlavid Says:

Where ever the hell they choose !

  38. stpetebucfan Says:

    List

Do you read the crap you type. BA is incredibly LOYAL and yet you find a way to turn what should be a positive into a negative. Just freaking amazing.

I’m glad I never worked for or played on any team YOU coached. It’s all about you eh?

BA was going to coach when Brady retired because he knew the team would go into a rebuilding…read losing mode for a couple of years. Once Brady returned BA realized the team would remain in tact and give Bowles his best chance on his second and most likely last chance without winning.

He does the CLASS thing and you try to make it bad with your cheap attitude.

  39. Delusional Intelligence Says:

Why is this even an issue? What about Jerry Jones, Arthur Blank, which teams sideline is OBJ on this week?

  40. August 1976 Buc Says:

List , “come on man”, lol you need to bring your A game, lololol
I mean this is your time to shine lol A BA post lol
You need to step it up your game man lol

    GO BUCS GO BA!!!!!

  41. Listnfrmafar Says:

August, not sure what your referring to, isn’t the question, “Where should BA be during the game?” My answer is the closest nursing home with the largest flat screen TV’s available. Make sure there is more than one TV because he’s liable to put his fist through it thinking he’s hitting a player. Stpete@ just pointing out the obvious, BA force fed Bowles on the Bucs.

  42. August 1976 Buc Says:

Lol, List you love BA so much, NOT lol just joking because I know where you stand about BA, and you are consistant with mostly negative things to say about BA and some not negative. So I was just having fun about what you post. Like BA or hate him, he is a friend to the Bucs and is a positive. I have no problem with BA calling out crap to the ref or barking at players on the playing field. You have players and coaches and fans in the stands barking at the players and officials. So matter how much Florio or any other person does not likes it, whatever.

    GO BUCS!!!!!
