Lavonte David Understands Screens

September 13th, 2022

Laughs at screen passes.

Joe has written about this but it’s time to flush it out.

It was late in the game Sunday night, third down. The Cowboys still had a prayer because QB Dak Prescott had yet to injure his thumb. So Mike McCarthy decided to do one of the dumbest things Joe has seen a coach try.

McCarthy decided to catch Bucs linebacker Lavonte David napping. McCarthy called a screen pass. At David. How dumb can you be?

Naturally, David busted up the play. It was like stealing candy from a baby. McCarthy is lucky David didn’t pick-six the Cowboys.

So after the game, Joe spoke with David about it and just laughed. David told Joe as he came off the sidelines laughing, someone — it wasn’t clear who — yelled at David, “Hey Lavonte, you love screens, don’t you?” David said he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face.

“It’s all about game-planning and understanding how they are trying to attack you,” David said about defending screens.

Before taking off for Dallas, Joe listened to SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio and famed sports talk legend “The Pope,” Mike Francesa, appeared for a full hour. He discussed teams favored to be good this year and explained how he’s not a big believer in the Cowboys.

Why? McCarthy, that’s why.

“I watch his games and I see things I just don’t understand,” Francesa said of McCarthy.

Joe thought immediately of that quote when Prescott threw a screen right at David’s real estate.

What maniac tries to test Lavonte David?

McCsrthy looked lost and seemed to be looking around for someone to give him directions.

McCarthy constantly has a look on his face like he’s unsure whether he’s about to rip a fart or take a #2

Hey Joes, you may want to post a blurb about our old safety Justin Evans. He started as a nickel for the Saints on Sunday. It sucks he’s a Saint, but I’m super happy for him that he’s playing again.

    *flesh it out

Coaches make bad calls constantly….it’s part of the game….

Are we going to berate BL every time a back gets blown up in the backfield on a running play?…….nope….because it happens often.

Not defending McCarthy…….don’t like the dude….hate the Cowboys….

    Sasquatch is a jerk.

  7. HC Grover Says:

So it comes down ro the Stanks on Sunday.

  8. Jimothy Says:

Tampabaybucfan; you’re not wrong, bad calls do happen all the time but good coaches scheme away from the strengths of teams and players. LVD has blown up screens more than one time and McCarthy and his staff totally missed it.

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

All that aside, LVD played as good as I’ve seen in a long time. A healthy LVD is a solid player.

  10. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Yes, he does understand screens, and even when he is fooled, his speed allows him to sometimes still make the play.

Yes. He’ll start by implementing a bounty, pay-per-injury program on the cowboys defense.
Parsons and Miller will be thrilled

  14. Howard Cosell Says:

Peyton needs to do hard prison time in Howard’s opinion

  15. Allen Lofton Says:

Zak had that look of a deer in the headlights – shell-shocked – he was completely gone in the second half.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Unbelievable … ‘McCarthy constantly has a look on his face like he’s unsure whether he’s about to rip a fart or take a #2’.

I’m thinking that’s why Joe wrote that ‘it’s time to flush it out’.

I do not see a great coach in Dallas anytime soon. Who would want to work for the guy who thinks HE’S the HC. Jerry Jones massive ego leaves no room for a superstar coach with their own massive ego.

Sean Payton would have done a much better job with the ‘Boys but why would he want to mess with Jones. Payton is close to getting a coaching dream job where he controls it all like Belicheat. Some franchise will give him the keys to the kingdom.

  18. Alvafan Says:

Speaking of Sean Payton……. I wonder if the Saints are implementing his game plan this Sunday. You know he’s not going to let the Bucs off the hook that easy. He’ll be the wild card this week. The Bucs better be ready for him coaching from afar, whispering in Allen’s headphones. The truth is stranger than fiction. Beware of Sean Payton. Beating the Bucs is his deepest desire.

  19. Crickett Baker Says:

Peyton does not want to coach this year. He’s trying out broadcasting.

  20. Joe Says:

    flesh it out

Joe prefers “flush it out.” Like you flush a quarterback out of the pocket or flush out a covey of quail. Expose something to a greater distance.

  21. Adrnagy Says:

    After 10yrs he better …

  22. orlbucfan Says:

LVD, ME13, and WillG stuck out the Musical Chairs HC Hire-and-Fire and constant losing years. Two of them BETTER end up in the HOF. Gholston is just one of those quiet guys who competently shows up every Sunday. A healthy LVD (my fave player) is a scary, HOF player, screens and all. And when LVD jacks up his game, so does White playing next to him. Now, I hope the Bucs kick Aints butt Sunday, Payton or no Payton. Karma is a bitch, and the Bucs are long overdue in NOLA!
