Community Man Devin White

Devin White

Buccaneers savior Devin White has a lot of critics.

That comes with being the No. 5 overall pick and not playing as well in 2021 as he did in 2020.

Fair or unfair, that’s how it is. Just ask Gerald McCoy.

Joe has heard from a lot of fans that White seemed to be distracted with too much off-field stuff since the Bucs won the Super Bowl. Joe can’t go there. Maybe it’s true; maybe it’s not.

Just because the guy owns a stable, has racing standardbreds and does GQ videos and likes to smell good doesn’t mean he isn’t a focused football player. There’s a little known story about White freaking out about a very expensive piece of jewelry getting stolen, but that was told to Joe off the record and, still, Joe can’t say anything about what happened would affect White’s play. It’s just not fair to start connecting those dots.

White was hurt last season and took a step back from his otherworldly play in the 2020 playoffs. It happens. And White was just 23 years old last season and still made the Pro Bowl.

Joe was very encouraged, however, to hear Derrick Brooks rave about White’s hunger and focus,  and White hosting a youth camp this weekend, and what he did for a Tampa Bay foster family earlier this year. Those are all signs that White is on the right path and any chatter about him being distracted is likely unwarranted.

Let’s see it in the games. More impact, less talk.

  2. Long John Says:

He did run his head a lot last year.

  3. captivajim Says:

fewer penalties , less talk , more tackles

That video was a heart wrencher and those parents are angels man. White is a sweetheart for doing this and he’s still one hell of a football player. Even Brooks and Lawrence Taylor had some down years in comparison to some of their best ones so White will be fine.

  5. A Bucs Fan Says:

He’s a very good player on the cusp of being great. If he can just discipline himself to do his job and trust the guy next to him to do his he will be fine.

If he is not blitzing on third downs, then he should be removed for someone who can cover a back or tight end. He is horrible in that aspect of his game !

He played through a serious injury.

Everybody forgot that he had a messed up hip.

    And he played through it

He’s still young. Definitely hasn’t been as good as he should be, but that doesn’t mean his story is written in stone. If he wants to be a $100 million player he needs to step up, but there’s no reason he can’t
