Jason Licht Has A Hater

May 6th, 2022

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Over at TheAthletic.com, longtime NFL writer and Hall of Fame selector Mike Sando steps around the puddles of red ink and types up columns based on raw feedback he gets from unnamed NFL executives.

His latest work is a draft evaluation for each team through the eyes of those unsourced sources.

For the Bucs, Sando found someone unimpressed by how general manager Jason Licht works a draft board.

“They get a dependable, gritty, solid starter in Logan Hall, but nothing over the top here,” an exec said. “It will be interesting to see how the two tight ends pan out. They did trade back from the first round, but in general, they are not a team that manipulates the draft. They took a punter in the fourth round. Trade back. Get more picks.”

Joe’s head was shaking reading that. The Bucs have done plenty of draft manipulation via trades in recent years. Plus, just because you trade up or down doesn’t mean it’s the correct move. Why is this anonymous executive such a Jason Licht hater?

The second unnamed executive quoted in the piece called the Bucs’ 2022 draft “solid” and likened defensive tackle Hall, the first player selected by Tampa Bay, to a potential DeForest Buckner type.

That’s strong company. Buckner is a two-time Pro Bowler and was All-Pro with San Francisco in 2020.

Joe is so tired of all the overthinking surrounding the draft. The draft is like free agency. Just pick quality players. If a team can accomplish that, few will ever whine about where they were taken or how much they cost.

The writer is entitled to his opinion. This reader is entitled to discount it as nonsense.

The hater is probably mickey loomis and just gives me another reason to despise the saints and their distasteful, obnoxious, mongo fans.

    Deadlines….
    Gotta write something

  4. DoooshLaRue Says:

I hope Sasquatch doesn’t read this.
Someone is being mean to JL and he won’t stand for that.

…….or does he only come to the defense of old hags?

  5. Bucs Win Says:

His biggest hater is the entire Patirotwats fan base.

  6. GOB Says:

This was a historically weak draft, as far as top end talent goes. While I didn’t like the running back drafted at 90, what was licht supposed to do? The bucs are an extremely top heavy roster. Trading up into the top half of the first round made little sense. It was best to get some depth through value.

  7. Cobraboy Says:

    Sour grapes.

  8. Bobby M. Says:

I think a better comparison for draft picks is providing a floor and ceiling. For Hall I think his floor is probably that of a Gholston….ceiling is maybe Buckner. Not every pick has to be an all pro. If you snag solid starters, you’re going to be all right. The punter was the one that i thought was just bizarre. To draft him in the 4th rd….did they really feel he was going to get picked soon….or ever?

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why would he be described as a “hater”?

The only thing that I don’t like (question) with Licht’s drafts is his propensity to trade up a few spots for players in later rounds…
It’s like he really wants a player and starts to get nervous…..he did it with Goedeke & last year with Darden. And its usually with picks he acquires from trades…..sort of like they are meaningless.
That 1st pick in the 6th round has at least some value.

Again I remember the annual grief I received for working sports in a college football town.

Every year the Tennessee and Va Tech fans would want to engage in debate over which school had the best recruiting class. High school kids!!!!

So we get a little more perspective after their college careers but let’s just see who shows up when the bright lights come on. In the past I’ve been both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised by how some of our draft picks performed

  11. Pewter Power Says:

I thought everything and everyone was fair game and open to criticism? That’s a journalist take on it. No one HAS to say they had a great draft. We’ll see how many good rookies there are soon enough but doesn’t feel like it will be many.

Licht built a championship roster so he’s doing something right but until this guy hits a home run at quarterback and pass rusher his job is only so safe once Brady retires.

  12. Posey99 Says:

Again, complaining about a draft before any players have played in a game is about the stupidest thing you can do. How many people loved the Jalen Darden pick? How many people hated the Ali Marpet pick…

  13. BridleOaksBuc Says:

We went into the draft with 6 picks. Came out of the draft with 8 players. How can you do that without “manipulating” the draft? What does that even mean?

  14. bucfanforever Says:

With the way everyone always wants to trade back, and I am sure it’s the same with fans on other teams, the NFL might as week start with round 4, and skip rounds 1, 2 and 3 and then have 128 7th round “flyers.”

  15. SKBucsFan Says:

The Exec is not wrong. He essentially ends up getting his guys but loses picks when he moves up to take them earlier than projected. Takes the long way around to end up with the same draft.

“The Exec is not wrong. He essentially ends up getting his guys but loses picks when he moves up to take them earlier than projected. Takes the long way around to end up with the same draft.”

It’s speculation though. You don’t know if someone would of taken them or not before your original pick in the round.

Just because Mel Kiper thinks a guy is a 2nd rounder doesn’t mean a team of NFL professional scouts agrees with him. They grade players on their opinions.

Sando is probably the reason why Barber ain’t in the HoF yet….when you connect the dots 😂 only joking (well kinda)

  18. Allen Lofton Says:

These unnamed executives make assessments hiding behind anonymity – but if they announced themselves publicly, you’d find out this is nothing more than Trash Talk. The Bucs rooster ranks at the top of the NFL.

There’s really nothing more to say Mr. Executive.

  19. Jor God tha Binks Says:

And not being impressed w/ our Draft is one thing, but saying “(JL) and the Bucs DON’T manipulate the Draft so this person’s credibility relates to our Team.

Sometimes if you don’t really know (and clearly the guy doesn’t here…that’s almost a fact)….you probably shouldn’t just start blurtin’ sh!t out then 😂🤯 that’s a cringe read (not you Joe)

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Isn’t the objective of the Draft to get the guys you want?

  21. New England Patriots Fan Says:

His value is in free agency not draft, signing the players he has since Brady came for the price they pay has been very good, no one but Bill has done value like this GM, only a few player on roster over paid and they all re did contracts to assist in signings in 2021.

His only miss in my opinion was not getting Odell, as Rama wouldn’t of won SB without Odell and when Brown was cut Odell would’ve been better than what we had and he vocally begged to join Brady and signed for cheap.

  22. Destinjohnny Says:

    I agree
    He overdrafted the dog punter

  23. BUCman Says:

Love Jason Licht but I have to agree with the unnamed source. By most evaluations each of the first three picks were considered reaches at the spot they took them. That’s not good value. I don’t see one difference maker. Just a bunch of guys to fill roster holes. Yes, we came away with 8 picks instead of 6 but for a team competing for a Superbowl what we needed was more quality and less quantity. Example: for a team rebuilding trading back from 27 for extra picks is smart but passing on Davante Wyatt who would definitely be a difference maker this year was a mistake

  24. Cobraboy Says:

Shaq Mason is another player picked in this draft.

  25. DungyDance Says:

Sorry but a 4th rounder is too much capital to spend on a kicker. Granted, no one can know whether he’d still be there in the 5th or 6th. They say Camarda is versatile and can pinch hit at place kicking. And perhaps he’ll be an above average punter. But a 4th rounder for that? It’s not enough of an upgrade over someone else who we could sign off the street.

Ehh. they sit surrounded by crystal balls, tarot cards, tea leaves, and who knows what else. These “haters” sure don’t do the work of our scouts, and any truth they hit on is easily explained by coincidence. By the way, posey it is spelled “would’ve” not “would of”. Or just say “would have” please.

  28. Foreveverblue Says:

I was unimpressed with GM Licht draft as well. Good but nothing over the top. If we drafted at our original pick #27 why not draft DT D’Vonte Wyatt. He is a higher rated DL than Logan Hall. Goedecki was available RD2 at #57 anyway. RD3 we drafted RB White with Isaiah Spiller still on the board? RD4 draft a punter? Licht loves drafting kickers for some reason. He has spent draft picks on RD2, RD5 and RD4 the past few drafts on kickers. I know the draft is a crap shoot so it may all work out just fine.

Anonymous sources really need to go by the wayside. I understand if a person could die from revealing their information, but otherwise it just encourages cowardice

First Joe has heard of that. Even Vegas had Logan Hall going at No. 34. Peter Schrager said this morning heard from NFL people Goedeke was expected to go in the 40s.

  32. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

We probably have 4 eventual starters from this draft.
The punter will certainly start, and so will Logan Hall.
Maybe Goedeke too at Guard, and maybe our new running back will get plenty of playing time.
I think we did very well in this draft!

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

Joe, some of your readers have their secret sources so it’s tough to compete with them. I mean, you do this full time as does Schraeger and NFL people. Of course some of these readers and their secret sources know way more than those who do it for a living.

The fact that there were only 18-20 players in this year’s draft with 1st round grades and we were picking 27th means nothing to these brainiacs. We should have drafted the next Selmon by golly. (Facepalming)

  34. JeffreyLane77 Says:

The only way I will become a Licht hater is if he drafts a DE from Clemson or trades up for a kicker again. Lol
