ESPN’s Mike Greenberg Skewers Bruce Arians

April 4th, 2022

Dissed.

Bucco Bruce Arians doesn’t have many allies at ESPN.

Joe wonders why that is. Another dagger from the four-letter was hurled at him today.

This time it came from one of their biggest TV names, Mike Greenberg. He seems to think Tom Brady should not be getting skewered for allegedly running Arians out of his head coach job. Brady should be supported, Greenberg explained on today’s Greeny show.

“Why is that a bad thing? Does anyone think Bruce Arians was a great coach? Bruce Arians is a great guy. … He’s not been a great head coach,” Greenberg told his national audience.

Hmm, Arians winning coach of the year twice, plus a Super Bowl in a different season, should make him “great” by any definition. And then there’s his winning percentage.

Arians is 89-51-1 as an NFL head coach in the regular season, if you include his interim duties in Indianapolis when he took over after Chuck Pagano in 2012. That .636 winning percentage ranks better than Andy Reid and Sean Payton. And it’s better than Bill Walsh, John Harbaugh and Bill Cowher, and a shade worse than mighty Mike Tomlin through his 15 seasons in Pittsburgh.

Yeah, but Arians wasn’t “great,” per Greenberg.

Joe will add that Arians was a hell of a coordinator and a Super Bowl winner in that role.

Who did Arians piss off at BSPN and why? Or how mismanaged was his relationship with the network during his days in Tampa and/or Arizona?

Consider the source…He’s a Jets fan, so how much does he REALLY know about football?! Greeny’s an a$$…

  3. Ed Kerber Says:

Greenberg knows great coaching since he is a Jets fan.

    Now that he’s out……time to pile on….typical coward……he won’t be the last.

  5. BuxfaninTX Says:

Nobody cares about Greenberg, not even his employer

  6. LOL Says:

Why do people still watch ESPN? That network hasn’t been relevant for like 10 years now…. there is zero journalism or standards there and is an entertainment based organization, not one that reports legitimate news and stories..

  7. Winny Testaverde Says:

Greenberg in the same pencil neck category as Florio & Schein…incredibly tough from a distance/through a monitor/after the fact ( without facts ).

  8. Leighroy Says:

Does anyone think Mike Greenberg is a great radio host?

  9. BridleOaksBuc Says:

    Greenberg’s still on TV?

  10. Biff Barker Says:

ESPN has been s steaming pile for many years. Glad I cut the cord years back and now they don’t pollute my TV anymore.
Waste of time with them Joe.

  11. Walter Says:

It’s become increasingly obvious that a lot of people in sports media do not like Arians. His brash, cocky, bordering on arrogant personality can rub some people the wrong way. I personally enjoy Arians’ personality, he injected some confidence back into the Bucs locker room that we were sorely missing before he got here. He made the Bucs respectable again, that’s no small accomplishment.

  12. Marine Buc Says:

Who cares what Walt Disney says these days…

  13. Biff Barker Says:

LOL, The Mickey Mouse ESPN network is a Disney company. Nuff said.

  14. BA4President Says:

In 2022, NFL fans have PFT’s articles, NFL Radio, and team-specific beat writers (such as Joe). And if you want a more visual element, GMF does a great job.

There is no need anymore for ESPN unless you are a teenager looking for people to yell and over-sensationalize sports analysis. I loved ESPN as a teen, but now that I’m an adult I know that grown men yelling about sports is silly.

Sports stories are interesting enough that we don’t need two people fabricating arguments, and then getting angry about them, for viewers to care.

MTV and ESPN are similar in that they both pander to the lowest common denominator.

  15. BelleGladeBuc Says:

I’m surprised Disney allows Greenberg to just assume BA’s gender by using such pronouns as “great guy.”

I thought Disney wasn’t using gender specific pronouns anymore in their parks, so I would assume that Greenberg should call BA a “great non menstrating non birthing non lactating human being.”

    I’m confused.

  16. Beeej Says:

Biggest thing with ESPN hosts is politics. Was BA ever seen with a maga hat on?

  17. RPK Says:

BA was a good head coach with Arizona but did nothing for Tampa outside of assembling a good coaching staff.

In Arizona, he actually coached. In Tampa, he was semi-retired driving around on a golf cart all day.

Did he work on the gameplan? NO (Admitted to Colin Cowherd he doesn’t work on gameplan)

    Does he call plays? NO

Was he a good in-game coach? NO (pissed off Brady with boneheaded decisions)

So, Bucs fans, what exactly are we missing?

FOR EVERYBODY STILL CONFUSED WHY TOM CANNED BA, THAT IS THE POINT. WE ARE NOT MISSING ANYTHING. TOM WANTS SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY WORKS.

BA is the laziest head coach in Bucs history.

BILLY B OUTWORKED BA. TOM IS DONE WITH IT. THANK YOU TOM!!

  18. Don Says:

BSPN is controlled by extremist leftist who hate cigar smoking, tell it how it is, sideline cussing, super bowl winning coaches.

Hater gonna/gotta hate… NFL talkers gotta have a take. Most of it’s BS.

  20. Jim Rudolph Says:

Having seen Sam Wyche, Leeman Bennett, Lovie Smith, Richard Williamson, etc we all know that BA was in our Top 3 ever coaches. Gruden, Dungy and Arians were studs

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’ll always remember Greenberg as the guy who was always complaining about how conservative Tony Dungy was…Only to criticize Dungy for trying for a 1st Down by running a fake punt. Classic “talking out of both sides of your mouth”, and a great way to lose any/all credibility.

  22. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Coming from ESPN, that says it all, a POS. ARians is a great coach and well respected. HE will be in the BUCS ROH. GO BUCS!!

  23. HC Grover Says:

    Dunno and don’t care/

  24. Allbuccedup Says:

Its over move on maybe BA will be the head coach of the Texans next Lovie will be one and done.

  25. Bird Says:

Yah. Used to watch sports center everyday after work. Place is a joke now. They should stick to sports but they just cant help themselves

So many tools work there ..like greenberg…

  26. Pewter Power Says:

No choice but to keep this story going there is literally nothing else to talk about if you don’t know draft and they don’t. Between BA retirement and the stupidity that AB keeps putting out there those two Initials getting all the airtime

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

TB12 couldn’t deal with BA’s work ethic, or lack thereof.

I’m excited to see what a Bucs team with TB12 AND discipline can do… it might be epic.

  28. David Says:

I like Greeny but this is a horrible take. Bruce Arians has been successful, been to Super Bowls, won a Super Bowl, great regular seasons… Everywhere he has gone was successful. I don’t understand what he is suggesting. Is he saying he’s not an X & O guy? That’s not true but even if it was, who cares?
He’s a general leading while delegating. He hires good people around him and empowers them to do their jobs. That’s what a leader should do.

  32. Bucs Win Says:

    Very stupid take from Greenberg.

  33. Anonymous Says:

Greenberg is and always has sucked. His opinions have no merit. He is a ass. BA would cuss his ass out and make him smell his S @#t.

  34. Bucboy Says:

ESPN would never treat a black coach like that.

  35. Duane Says:

This team dominates the sports media coverage. You have to start wondering how much of this drama has been fabricated by TB12, BA, and Team Glazer to keep the takes rolling. We all love BA, no one is up in arms as to why he retired (again), and regardless of what reason he gives, someone else has a hot take on TV.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

“Why do people still watch ESPN?

I cut the cord two years ago. I do not watch ESPN except for one thing…Lightning games. And that’s rare since I”m too lazy to get a VPN so I could get around the Bally/Spectrum deal. Now that I’ve found how few regular season Lightning games ESPN shows I’ll definitely get a VPN next year for hockey season.

As for “Greeny”. I find this incredibly disappointing. I guess he’s just another talking head looking for eyeballs, ears, and clicks.

RPK probably thinks Eisenhower was a rotten General. After all he wasn’t out front with his tanks like “My blood and your guts” Patton. At least that’s what my father called him when he got back. He was not found of “Blood Guts”.

How about Bradly…a great general admired by all who did most of the “Generalship” after D Day…

Above them all figuring out which general to deploy where..strategy..how do handle the Brits arrogant General Montgomery…but if there had been “golf carts” back in the day I’m sure Ike would have ridden on one.

Some of the criticism here is simply ignorant…not in the pejorative sense but the literal sense.

First rule of a good manager…whether Corporate, Military or Sports is always have your replacement at hand in case you go down.

Other rules include DELEGATION…do “some” people here even understand that concept.

I think BA is laughing at all of this manure. I think he gets one of legendary Coach John Wooden preached! “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

  37. GOB Says:

Talk about shooting the messenger. Get ahold of yourselves. Im no mike Greenberg fan, but he speaks the truth. All you BA sycophants need to wake up and smell the bosco. Your team will commit less penalties this year. They will also run more disciplined and accountable practices. I know this because Brady wouldn’t have signed on otherwise. Anyone here who thinks Bruce arians gives this team the best chance to win is living in fairytale land. They won the superbowl in spite of Arians, during a covid year, without fans.

Here is what confuses me. If Arians and Brady have this great football relationship, why didn’t Brady go to bat for him, and beg him to stay on? After all they won a Superbowl together.

  38. DarenGibo Says:

Ahhhh the insignificant Mike of Mike and Mike fame. Got it. Yeah, his opinion means nada to me.

  39. DaBux Says:

    Who?

    And who cares?

  40. ClwJB Says:

“Here is what confuses me. If Arians and Brady have this great football relationship, why didn’t Brady go to bat for him, and beg him to stay on?”

Confused and you admit it? What you post is illogical. Are you able to hold two thoughts in your mind at once. BA and TB are on good terms and perhaps TB a well known family man himself UNDERSTOOD BA. Just because YOU don’t doesn’t make him really that hard to decipher.

So..BA spent three years…dealt with JW’s wildness and lack of discipline…won a SB…was in contention for a second until injuries and a nervous breakdown of a star receiver blew up the team. Many believe it was AB’s meltdown..that was a factor…just as losing CG14 but losing Wirfs IMHO was far worse.

  42. Pete Says:

Greenberg is the front man for the network’s woke agenda and all of it it disgust me.

  43. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Yup.

  44. Robert Says:

  46. Bkep Says:

Come on people as a lifelong New England Patriots fan I know the deal here. Do you really think that Bruce was the reason the bucks won the super bowl 2 years ago and why they could possibly win this year let’s be real

  47. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    @Bkep

Football is the ultimate team team game.

If TB12 doesn’t have ME13, Godwin, Marpet, Smith, Jensen, Cappa, Wirfs, Shaq, Lenny, JPP, Suh, LVD, White, Davis, Dean, Whitehead, Vea, Winfield, then he doesn’t win anything.

Saying that winning the Super Bowl is because of one player shows a complete disrespect to the game I love.

Let me know when TB12 covered Hill, rushed Mahomes, intercepted Mahomes, made Kelce hear footsteps. I don’t remember seeing him play defense against the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, but maybe you know something we don’t.

  48. Rick w Says:

Greenberg is the same guy that screwed over mike golic
a supposed friend he did a show with for over 10 years with and didn’t have the common courtesy to tell him his self that he was leaving that show which got axed in favor of his own new show. What a weasel scumbag definitely a jets fan boy

  49. gotbbucs Says:

There’s different kinds of coaches and there are different sets of skills that set certain coaches apart from the rest.
Some coaches are incredible with the X’s and O’s of the game. Some are great motivators. Some are great at building relationships.
I’m not sure if anything Arians was doing from an X’s and O’s point of view was very revolutionary. He loved to put air under the ball, but so have many coaches that came before him.
I think Arians motivational tactics were hit and miss. Some players react well to being called out and cussed at, some not so much.
Where Arians excels is building relationships. He’s able to connect well with people, and when you figure how long he’d been in the game and all the different stops he made along the way, he was never going to struggle to put good assistant coaching staff’s together, and what comes along with assistant coaches is players. Players have contact with assistant coaches way more than head coaches.
If you can put assistant coaches in place with proven track records then players fall into line much easier.
Arians will never be remembered as some kind of pioneer in the football X’s and O’s community. His legacy is that of an NFL maverick that didn’t really follow the trends. He did it his way and to hell with the consequences. I can respect that.

  50. Steven M. Says:

Rpk and Bkep are both right. Arians didn’t win the Superbowl.
Brady Bowles and Leftwich did. BA was ultimately responsible for the poor losing defensive play against the Rams. He even said there was
was miscommunication on the field. How does that happen in the playoff game, when the game is on the line. BA himself said after the Superbowl and other victories “I didn’t do s__t.

Come on people as a lifelong New England Patriots fan I know the deal here. Do you really think that Bruce was the reason the bucks won the super bowl 2 years ago and why they could possibly win this year let’s be real

    YES LETS BE REAL
What is the common denominator with Billy B’s Lombardi trophy?
OH he had TB12 for his QB.
And how has Bill done without TB12, well lets take a look, oh just last year the Pats took their worst beating in the playoffs. And the 2020 season, a losing season.

Bill’s lifetime winning percentage is 47% without Tom Brady. That is a losing record.
That includes his time with the Cleveland Browns

So without Tom, Bill record is not good enough to be going to the Hall of Fame.
    It would get you fired.

    Yes lets be Real.

The Coach has to have the players to win games.

Billy B is finding out that life without a great QB in the NFL is not a fun place to be.

So BA has a winning record with the 3 teams he has been the head coach.

Bill did very well with Brady in NE,
but in Cleveland he had a losing record. 36–44 record

Again without the players, life sux in the NFL.
Just ask most head coaches that do not have a good or great QB.

This is not a knock against Bill, he is a good coach, but to try and slight BA, sorry it does not fly.

Again, BA has a winning record with 3 NFL teams

I wonder how many Coaches could ever say that?
    Very few indeed, if any.
Joe if you know of any please say.

Lets just keep it real lolololol

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  52. Rick w Says:

Greenberg is a weasel that screwed over a guy/friend he did a show with for over 10 years just so he could get his own solo show. Mike golic didn’t kiss enough espn ass like greeny the weasel did

  53. Joseph Mamma Says:

He won one playoff game ever as a head coach before Brady showed up. If Brady didn’t play for him, then he would probably would have about the same results. Not absurd that someone would consider him ‘not great.’

  54. Mustachechuck Says:

Greenberg is a Blowhard and a HACK many in New England are not very impressed by him. Ask yourself who got anything by his hit piece. True fans of the game here in New England know full well since the Colt’s what a really great coach Bruce Arians was and is . We all Tom and the BUCS get another Super Bowl !! If Dungy would have built up the offense, then maybe the Bucs win a Super Bowl.

This order is not based on who is the most likable, some prefer Dungy or Gruden or BA.

I just want to shout out to B.A. I don’t care if there is truth to TB12 having beef with him, he deserves better than this type of disrespect. He has a Hall of Fame resume and immediately brought results to a franchise in quicksand even before TB got here. Somewhere in between all of this mess likely lies the truth. Maybe there was slight disagreement from TB’s perspective with B.A. Clearly wasn’t toxic. I don’t see Straightshooting Bruce just hang it up and keep his mouth shut if he’s being strong-armed. B.A? No way. He says what he feels and he doesn’t particularly care what anyone thinks.

  62. cmurda Says:

BA is mediocre without the last two year of W’s with Brady. Some will say the same of Belichick and in the ladder years you’re probably right but Belichick taught Brady the discipline and drive he has today. BA did the opposite. I also disagree that BA put together a great coaching staff, the secondary often fails in basic coverage, linebackers out of position, Dline that constantly jumps offsides, lack of the run game and an oline that lacks discipline at times. The bad TO calls etc. All make for a solo coach.

  65. August 1976 Buc Says:

Somewhere this post was actually about BA, and being a good coach.

August there is nothing wrong with drinking the Koolaid. You believe what you believe, BA’s history is fine but define winning? I see a burnt out guy who may have tried but failed in 2021. We will see if Bowles and BL are good coaches but in the past Bowles had failed and BL, who knows? Maybe I am giving Brady too much credit but things sure did change for the Bucs the minute he walked through the door and it was doom and gloom when he temporarily walked out.

  67. Listnfrmafar Says:

It’s a bit ironic that many say the press dislikes BA when it’s the AP who vote on coach of the year which BA was twice.

  68. August 1976 Buc Says:

List….”August there is nothing wrong with drinking the koolaid”

lololo facts are facts List, not koolaid.

Look how well Billy boy did the last 2 years without Tom. The Pats fans were sick watching the worst beatdown the Pats have suffered in the Playoffs by Buffalo.

Again I bring up Bill, because so many seem to discount what happened with the Bucs because Brady is the QB,

Let me remind everyone that that Billy Boy has also lost 3 Super Bowls with Brady as his QB. So with the logic that is thrown around about BA, whats that say that Bill actually lost 3 Super Bowls with Brady, If we follow this Brady logic about BA, then Bill must be terrible, because with the GOAT he should have won all 9 Super Bowls he was in as the Pats Coach.

No, Bill is a good Coach, and the last 2 years it is proven by Bill and the Pats, that you need good players, and if you want to win Super Bowls, you need great or at least excellent QB play.

Again BA having a winning Record with 3 NFL Teams. I do not know if that has been done by any other head coach in the annals of the storied NFL.

What’s for certain — Bruce Arians couldn’t give a warm bag of excrement about what Mike Groinberg or any of BA’s hallucinating critics have to say. His resume’ and record speak for themselves. The love he has from his former players is strong.

If he were such a hack, Brady would never have chosen to come to the Bucs in the first place. Morons seem to forget that. He was a free agent, he could have gone anywhere.

It was BA who answered the “door number 2” question with “Tom Brady.”

It’s not heavy handed, but it is political opinion, and you shouldn’t be surprised if some posters respond. Likewise, you don’t blink an eye when posters blabber about “wokeness” or “fake news” from a right wing perspective — you’ll let them regurgitate Tucker talking points all day… but once someone takes a poke at the right wing blowhards, Joe gets involved and says “no politics”…
Joe filters hundreds of comments daily that are trashed and deletes dozens, and they come from all across the political spectrum. Also, Morning Joe posts are killed in their entirety in the evening. Does Joe catch everything? No. That would be a full-time job. But Joe does delete all kinds of things every day. List The worst playoff beating for the Pats lol but hey keep drinking the koolaid lol

I can hear all the Pats fans that day and how sick they were watching that sh!t show.
And Kraft also longing for a playoff win. Openly talking about it. Well if they had not let TB12 walk out the door, they would have at least won a playoff game.

Again it is not just the Coach takes players.
So again why is BA penalized for have the GOAT?
No one is penalizing Bill. And again he must be terrible to lose 3 Super Bowls, with the GOAT at QB. I mean they way BA was skewered for the Rams loss, but no, people speak by what they like, not the results overall.
BA is winning Head Coach in the NFL with 3 teams.
Most head coaches have a losing record. Very few in the history of the league have a winning record.
Even Billy Boy has a losing record with the Browns. Oh but here we go again, it takes the players, and QB’s that Bill had, like Vinny Testaverde and Eric Zeier, Todd Philcox, Brad Goebel just does not compare to TB12, Yes Bill went to the playoffs one year and beat the Giants, but we are talking about winning championships, and the QB’s he had were not going to get them a Lombardi Trophy.

    GO BUCS!!!!

August, winning 6 and losing three and 2 with the Giants is better than 1-1. ROOKIE QB against Josh Allen top 4 QB in the NFL. Kind of a bad comparison don’t you think? Kraft never said they would have won a playoff game I’d Brady was still there, what he said he was not happy they haven’t won a playoff game since 2019. Hey, the verdict is out on Belichick, if he misses the playoffs this year and with a loaded AFC it’s highly possible it could be time for his old arse to be put out to pasture as well.

Just who the hell does Mike Greenberg think he is, who died and made Mike Greenberg God? Mike Greenberg is not and never will be anything more than that kid in High School who liked to hang around the cool kids so he could be cool, Mike Greenberg is a joke, it’s no secret he basically forced ESPN to get rid of Mike Golic because he knew Golic was more liked, more popular, and more respected as a journalist then he could ever be, so he went to ESPN and pulled a Tom Brady, he told them it’s either him or me. So why is it ok for him to do that but he’s not critical of Brady telling the Bucs the same thing. Mike Greenberg my question to you is you want to be the Pot or the Kettle?

Mike Greenberg is a freaking joke, company suck up man, thinks he great but basically he’s less than nothing, Golic was so much more respected and popular than he (Greenberg) will ever be
