Buccaneers Trade Up In Round 2 And Select Luke Goedeke

April 29th, 2022

Our beloved Buccaneers got aggressive late in Round 2 tonight, trading up three spots to the No. 57 overall pick to select Central Michigan guard/tackle Luke Goedeke.

What a classic Jason Licht pick, sort of channelling his trade up to snag retired Pro Bowl guard Ali Marpet late in Round 2 back in 2015.

Goedeke stands 6-5, 312 pounds and is known for his nasty edge, much like former Bucs guard Alex Cappa was as a Division II tackle. Goedeke is projected as a guard in the NFL, and he’ll likely compete immediately at left guard with Aaron Stinnie, Nick Leverette and Robert Hainsey.

In typical Licht fashion, Goedeke was a Division-II player before transferring up to Central Michigan.

Joe can’t claim to have scouted the former tight end. But with the Bucs being this aggressive to go get Goedeke, they no doubt believe he has what it takes to make an impact quickly if called upon.

Central Michigan isn’t exactly known for powerhouse NFL players, but offensive tackle alumnus Eric Fisher was taken No. 1 overall in the 2013 Draft.

The Bucs coughed up their second-round pick to Buffalo, and the first pick of the sixth round, acquired last night in a trade with Jacksonville.

beefing up the trenches, i like it.

  2. Jimbob Says:

    Awesome move!

  3. Jordan Says:

Needed a guy with versatility between guard and tackle, good pick. Wasn’t familiar with him but like what I’ve read so far in terms of tenacity and adversity he’s been through.

  4. Buc king Says:

You say he played te? Any chance we put him in goal line sets

  5. FSUBUC Says:

Why not sit and take the LSU guard, I’m baffled again.

  6. VSyl Says:

    Next probably TE?

  7. BucfaninMi Says:

He didn’t play because of a knee injury in 2020. I don’t think they had to trade up for him. Weird draft.

  8. firethecannons Says:

honestly we did not have to waste the the 6th round pick–this is getting stupid, we could of used those useless 7th round picks

  9. Dean Giusti Says:

This guy will be a starter for the next 10 yrs. He’s mean. Just like our first pick tonight. In Licht I trust.

  10. Austin Says:

Best O-line in the League by far, huge margin, not even close.

    Wirfs – All World
    Jensen – All pro
    Mason – top 5 guard
    Smith – Pro Bowl Snub

This kid didn’t give up a sack last year as a tackle, and he’s our new guard! I mean bro, Tom might get sacked ONCE next year

  11. SOEbuc Says:

Nice! Licht trades up in the third for a central Michigan player, they must seriously love him which makes me love him (for now).

  12. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Is this a joke ?? We passed on a physical CB in Booth because all ours are soft and took the dude from Houston .. Now we just took a 4th round tackle/ Guard with stubs for arms in the second 😳 They must know things we don’t, but time to drink and turn the draft off and wait for training camp

  13. Bird Says:

So bucs panicked when mcbride got taken

Anyway. The trenches are most important

Corner / tight end two next moves

  14. SB~LV Says:

Not a bad trade to get the player that they obviously wanted.

  15. BUCman Says:

WTF! Worst draft ever! He’s a third round pick at best and we already have a full stable of guards. First we miss taking Davante Wyatt and now they fail to move up a couple picks for McBride. Uhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!

  16. PassingThru Says:

Like I said, keep an eye on defective OTs that van be turned into athletic OGs.

  17. Buczilla Says:

He’s probably too big and slow to play corner. Our secondary is going to get shelled again this year.

  18. adam from ny Says:

    i like this pick…

has a little bit of the jensen tude in him…

and he will catch a touchdown at some point as a buccaneer, as an eligible lineman at some point in the future

  19. SOEbuc Says:

    *trades up in the second.

    DB/TE Round 3

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This guy can also play in the heavy packages with the tackle eligible……ex TE can probably catch a pass….
But I think he will end up being our starting LG.

    Nasty like Cappa…..Licht knows what he’s doing…

I question the trade up…..perhaps we simply don’t want the 6th round pick that much……seems we should have waited for him but WTFDIK

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

Bad pick who’s going to rush the quarterback ?? I don’t see a superbowl so far this year. Suh is old this is why we lose bad drafting. Defense wins championships!!

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Ex-Tight End? Maybe we just found our new blocking TE to relieve Gronk.

  23. Bigz Says:

So we drafted 2 projects. We didn’t get much from our early picks last year and looks to be the same this year. Where are our impact early picks? Lots of picks not playing, Trask, Hansey, and this guard, just to name a few. James Cook would have been nice.

  24. Pewter Power Says:

Seems Licht has to admit this was a need and had no faith in the guys currently sitting at guard because he didn’t draft BPA, there were a bunch of better players on the board

  25. Bucamania Says:

I guess the Hainsey pick hasn’t been going too well.

  26. PassingThru Says:

Ex-TE, which means if and when he matures into an OT you can sometimes throw him the ball

  27. Big Marlon B Says:

This fanbase is pretty toxic. I think Licht has improved his evaluations and drafting enough to be afforded some level of confidence in him. Everyone is complaining about this kid, but I bet nobody has a clue about him. Just like everyone cried about Marpet and Cappa being D3 projects….Marpet came right in and started, and became a Pro Bowler by the time he retired. Cappa was a very reliable player, who was tough as nails (finished a game with a broken freaking arm) and just got a fat contract from Cincy. So obviously he’s valued.

Stop complaining and let’s see how they pan out before you jump off a bridge.

  28. Bucs since 76 Says:

CB Booth just had sports hernia surgery we already have enough CB who have injury problems. I like the pick when we lost Writz to injury that cause us any change to beat rams in the playoffs. Goedeke played tackle and projects as a guard.

  29. Buc king Says:

Goal line threat in my opinion

  30. Bucsfan951 Says:

Man, who knew a guard in the second would bring out all of the the couch gm’s. I mean, seriously.

  31. BUCman Says:

How many Guards do we need???? Uhhhh

  32. PassingThru Says:

He’s got good upside but really raw. Newcomer to the game, relatively speaking.

  33. OBVIOUS Says:

I’m just not feeling it. My gut tells me that we have missed opportunities. My gut also tells me that there was absolutely no need to move up 3 spots and trade our pick. I’m worried that Licht panicked. I believe he thought for the who knows how many on our board (known names, quality players) that we want and need just keep getting gobbled up as other teams are going after them and we are sitting on our hands watching them go by.. In fact I feel like he panicked. It certainly looks like it. I’m sure this tackle is a good guy but something tells me the NEED to move up just wasn’t there for this non known kid.
Don’t get me wrong, I feel like we got some good ones. I just have a strong feeling that the draft isn’t falling our way as hoped or planned for and we might be zigging when we should be zapping. I see him on the phone trying to get deals done. But it isn’t quite panning out

I just don’t feel like we got what we wanted. I feel like we got what was left. Also, defensive tackle was a need. Not so sure that it was the BPA’s we’ve been bragging about either.
I just don’t feel like that tackle was ACTUALLY the BPA in the second round this high in the draft. I really don’t. Things just don’t feel like they’re going smoothly.
But then again, that’s just how I feel. Doesn’t mean I’m right I suppose.
    GO BUCS

There’s some silly (and maniacal) posters in this comment section acting like they know the Draft and Offensive Lineman better than Jason Licht. What tomfoolery and buffoonery this comment section is 😂🤯

I guess the Hainsey pick hasn’t been going too well.

  36. sasquatch Says:

They would not have drafted him if they didn’t think he was better than what they already have. With all the guys we have at guard competing, we didn’t need a guy to come in and just compete. The only reason to draft an OG this year is to come in and start. So, expect him to plug in right away.

  37. Colonel Angus Says:

Clowns crying on draft day, nothing new here. Steal of the draft, future HOF’er!

  38. Actual Man Says:

Bucwoman, You sound like my wife every time I bring home a Harley.

  39. Bucfan Says:

Licht is filling needs and the 2 picks tonight so far are trench players that fills a huge need and both of these guys are hard nosed old school type of players.
So many of you whine and whine and I guarantee you have not a clue what you are being whiney about.
Let Jason do his thing. I have faith that he is picking the types of players that will be here for a long time.
Now get a TE, CB and RB and we will be set.
Oh, we will be back to the Super Bowl and win it again with these losers the whiners are whining about —— THIS YEAR!!

  40. Alvafan Says:

Get real Bucfan, these picks are a day late and a dollar short. Three months ago you wouldn’t know these jokers with a program. AAC and Div II nobodies. Just because they trapped lightning in a bottle once doesn’t mean they should continue to go to the well every year. Other NFL GMs must be ecstatic with all the great players JL has left in his wake so far. I’d like to be a fly on the wall at Brady’s draft party. Poor guy, his last year, he gives us 9 million dollars extra to spend and we draft backups while the Packers are getting studs. If this is Todd Bowles draft he should of deferred to BA.

  41. Esteban85 Says:

Yucs, they absolutely know something you don’t. That’s why they get paid to do this while you Monday morning GM this whole draft.
Can’t go wrong beefin up the lines. I love our picks so far. Trust our front office, they have earned it!

  42. Esteban85 Says:

Honestly I didn’t know about any of these dudes 1 month ago. Who cares about big name players in college! Ever heard of jamarcus Russell? Johnny Manziel? Manti Teo? I could go on for hours and hours. Give these kids a chance before you toss em in the trash.

  43. HC Grover Says:

Looking good. Another brick in the wall.

  44. Bucs Guy Says:

I don’t have a problem with the player, but this was a reach. Everyone has him as a 3rd rd pick, but we traded up to get him in the 2nd when we needed a TE. Still need one going into the 4th rd with only blocking TEs remaining.. Everyone just assumes Gronk is coming back. Plan for the worst, hope for remaining. If Gronk doesn’t come back, you have an aging Cam Brate, Cody McElroy and a blocking TE if you draft one. Big concern. Wish the Bucs would have taken a TE on day 2.
