Tyrann Mathieu’s Bucs “Family”

March 16th, 2022

Strong Bucs ties revealed.

With news that the Bucs didn’t even try to keep young hard-hitting, blossoming safety Jordan Whitehead, Joe speculated that something may have been bubbling below the surface for Tampa Bay to take such a disinterest in keeping a strong young safety.

Well, that something may have just surfaced.

Did you know that free agent safety Honey Badger is engaged to Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ stepdaughter?

And to add more intrigue, it seems Honey Badger, his fiance and two of Bowles’ sons hung out today at an amusement park. Jenna Laine of ESPN has the details.

Let the speculation begin!

So maybe, just maybe, the Bucs were planning to sign Honey Badger all along and that made Whitehead expendable? Notice Tom Brady told Russell Gage earlier this week the Bucs are building something special? Bringing in the three-time Pro Bowler would be special.

Now to add lighter fluid to the simmering coals, Joe knows Honey Badger and Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians are tight. Three years ago Joe spoke with Honey Badger at Super Bowl Opening Night and asked him point-blank if Arians tried to recruit him to the Bucs prior to the 2019 season.

Not only did Honey Badger, who turns 30 this spring, confirm that with Joe, Honey Badger said he wanted to play for Arians and the Bucs, but the Bucs didn’t have the money to sign him.

Stay tuned!

Hell yes. Bring the pain. LFG!!!

  2. D-Rome Says:

Mathieu is one of my favorite players to watch in the NFL. It would be great if he was on the Bucs for a variety of reasons.

  3. OhNoItsBusta Says:

Please bring him in. Would be a stud and instant starter

  4. Richard Dickson Says:

An amusement park in Orlando, at that. Right down I-4 from Tampa.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sure….bring him in…..and let’s bring back Gronk, Lenny, Suh, JPP, Gholston and get Chandler Jones……take a flyer on Patrick Peterson and while we are at it.Von Miller is still on the market…..

  6. Ash Says:

I seriously doubt that happens but it would be awesome if it did

  7. YucstoBucs Says:

I thought the same thing, but what’s going on with the Godwin talks @joebucsfan? Obviously they don’t want to keep him franchised because of the cap hit and is there more to this Rusell Gage signing 🤔 Go Bucs

  8. Adrnagy Says:

Brady & honey badger … look love to see at practice

  9. Jeff Says:

Getting wood thinking about this Bucs’ team!

  10. Tye Says:

    Chandler Jones signed with Raiders!

  11. unbelievable Says:

I mean, I wouldn’t mind him at all… But Whitehead is 5 years younger and hits harder. And doesn’t seem to lose his composure as easily.

Maybe Honey Badger will be cheaper? Not sure.

  12. LOL Says:

    🍆🍆🍆🍆

  13. Joe Says:

what’s going on with the Godwin talks @joebucsfan?

“What’s going on?” ??? He’s franchised and on the roster. Fully expect him to test market next year when healthy.
“Other Joe” says Bucs will “bet on the guy,” as Jason Licht said, and get Godwin in a contract by the July 15 deadline.–Joe

  14. Bobby M. Says:

I’m sure he’s still a productive player but i dont see how much impact the dude can make if our d-line doesn’t have someone to replace JPP. No JPP = double teams on Shaq = constant blitzing…..our defense isn’t that effective in that mode. We’ll see what they come up with soon enough.

  15. Joe Says:

’m sure he’s still a productive player but i dont see how much impact the dude can make if our d-line doesn’t have someone to replace JPP. No JPP

The Bucs were “this close” to returning to the Super Bowl last year and JPP was a total non-factor. So to replace JPP you want the Bucs to sign someone who has the impact of, say, Sackless Kyle Moore?

  16. Cobraboy Says:

Remember when Alvin Harper made Buc fans all giddy that the team finally got a decent FA because nobody wanted to play in Tampa?

    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won’t come again
    And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
    And there’s no tellin’ who
    That it’s namin’
    For the loser now
    Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’

    I reallyreallyreally like Mathieu…

  17. Rod Munch Says:

I’d have rather kept Whitehead, but certainly wouldn’t complain if they can figure something out. But honey badger isn’t the same player he was years ago when he was a true difference maker. Again, not complaining, but I personally wouldn’t view it as an upgrade. But if they get him, I’ll be happy to be proved wrong – it’s not a hill I’d die or anything.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Cobraboy – Remember it was just, what, 3 or 4 years ago that players were willingly signing with Jacksonville over Tampa. Things can change pretty quickly, but if you’re a bad team, you really have to overpay to get guys — which is why, if you’re a bad team, you should build through the draft and only try to add guys when you got something good going — and by that point, it’s easier to get FA’s anyways.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

    That would be awesome!

  20. BradyBucs Says:

NO NEW CORNERS, NO SUPER BOWL.

  21. DarenGibo Says:

If the Saints can be in the Watson discussion while they sit like 40M over the cap, why can’t we too continue to be creative with contracts and get this team complete!

  22. Zach W. Says:

    Bring it!

  23. alaskabuc Says:

Yes sir, please and thank you. I loved JW, but this would be an instant upgrade, especially if he can be had for less than what JW signed for.

  24. fern Says:

with that WR room now you don’t need corners
    We need pass rush

  25. Biff Barker Says:

    Edge rusher, DT, TE, RB.

Nice thought, but just can’t see stretching any farther.

  26. mark2001 Says:

BradyBucs… a real pass rush like we had two years ago, cures alot of DB shortcomings. And we didn’t have one last year for most of the year.

  27. Slacknuts Says:

Hes just a well known name. He’s trash. Easy pass

  28. ATLBuc Says:

I will miss the human torpedo Whitehead’s hitting but, I welcome the savvy experience that Tyrian brings. He’s like a coach on the field. Imagine having him and Windfield monitoring the back end! I think we will have the best defensive backfield in the league. I cant believe I’m writing this

  29. ATLBuc Says:

That kind of coverage will produce a lot of coverage sacks.

  30. yucboy Says:

Bucs already have a honey badger, Mike Edwards

  31. Listnfrmafar Says:

Mathieu is exactly what the team needs to get some balls in the secondary. Winfield is on an island when it comes to toughness. Bowles future son-in-law? No sure shatting where you eat is the way to go.

  32. adam from ny Says:

this would be a traveling man enjoying fun and fam…

but combine it with whitehead being “offered no offer”…

there is a lot to be said right here…

    bring him in…

he and tom will get over their little super bowl tussy

  33. adam from ny Says:

    #WhenYouGetOfferedNoOffer 🙂

  34. PassingThru Says:

Mathieu had an uneven season. He started kind of shaky but finished strong which means the tank isn’t empty.

I know it’s a pipe dream, but I’d like to see him sign if he’s amenable to a team-friendly deal.

  35. DEEEMO Says:

Hmmmmm…Very Interesting…Funny how things have change since the Brady Tweet on Sunday!!!! WOW

  36. Buc4evr Says:

Don’t tease us Joe, that would be insane to have the badger and the goat.

  37. DEEEMO Says:

Hmmmmm…Very Interesting…Funny how things have changed since the Brady Tweet on Sunday!!!! WOW

  38. catcard202 Says:

Would still want the FO to pull Jalen Pitre in the draft.

  39. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

Honey Badger is at Volcano Bay at Universal Studios. A mere 2 1/2 hour drive to Tampa (used to be much shorter). With all the hits our DB’s took last season, I am all for adding more quality and quantity to that group. I am happy with Edwards though. He has earned the opportunity. I would much rather see us shell out for a pass rusher. I don’t think we can bet on us outscoring everyone. Injuries happen and we saw what that did to our offense last season.

  40. Infomeplease Says:

Here in Tampa, when it rains it pours!!!! GO BUCS!!!

  41. Eddie Marz Says:

Tell honey cakes to take a walk somewhere else. We don’t want him. GOBUCS!

  42. Hodad Says:

He’s Whitehead with better ball skills. He could really help tighten up our secondary.

  43. Eddie Marz Says:

He’s a wuss. He ran away from Lenny in the SB. Check it out, when Fornette made his touchdown run Honey Boy took a different track towards the end zone. Let him play on the jets with whitehead.

  44. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    I’d rather have kept Whitehead.

  45. MadMax Says:

Oh yeah, he’s coming here. Now I see why Whitehead wasnt re-signed. Still wouldnt mind drafting S Brisker out of penn state (in the 2nd or 3rd). Tyrann will probably only be on a 1 year deal.

  46. William Tierney Says:

    Hey Eddie,

Let’s judge a player on one play. Smart.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Prefer Whitehead, but that ship sailed.

    We need Suh back too.

  48. cmurda Says:

Not me. I’d rather honey badger. Really liked Whitehead but honey badger is just a better overall safety. I’ve wanted him to pilot our back end defense for a long time. I hope we get him. I can guarantee Brady would be beating the drum

  49. RustyRhinos Says:

A BIG NO to the Biggest Whiner on every play that he misses out on. All his pointing and yelling and waving his arms and pointing his fingers at everyone else but himself. NO THANKS! Not a FAN!!

  50. Eddie Marz Says:

Hey Willie so your not denying he whimped out. Still want him on your team?

  51. westernbuc Says:

There’s a reason KC moved on from him. He’s done. Todd Bowles can sign him when he gets a head coaching gig next year.

Someone reported that if they couldn’t keep Davis they would’ve kept Whitehead. With SMB and Dean coming up next year, it makes sense not to overspend in this area

  52. Erik Says:

If the bucs aquire Mathieu that would be awesome but hopefully he will get along with Brady after words were exchanged during the superbowl the season before. He would be a great asset to the bucs defense and I’m sure the upcoming season would be inspired to get brady his 8th ring and the honey badger a second one. As long as they can keep the injuries to a minimum.

  53. Brent Clark Says:

I thinking TB12 was poking at the Honey Badger during the SB… “You’ll be on my team soon”. Maybe TB12 had to throw a call his way as well, time will tell tick tock

  54. Statguy Says:

Has better ball skills and he can play corner. So if we get beat up again at the position you can just slide him down and plus edwards in his spot. Edwards also had his 2 pick 6’s at nickel. Bowles likes moveable chess pieces

  55. lambchop Says:

I saw this on Twitter also. This guy is going to make everyone else around him better. He’s also not done playing himself. This Bucs team has to get some guys like this with the schedule we have. Hope he signs. The Badger would open up a lot of schemes for TB.

Whitehead was always a hit away from being on the sidelines. Reminds me of Tanard Jackson in that sense. He’s great when he’s on the field, but his body won’t hold up to that kind of style for a whole year. I’d rather have a ballhawk at Safety. If you’re depending on your Safety for run support, you got DL and LB problems.

But, even if he doesn’t get signed, Edwards is that ballhawk. I just think the Bucs would rather have starter type depth at key positions.

  56. Herbiebuc Says:

Can u imagine a 3 safety set with Winfield Edward’s and honey badger that’s tuff

  57. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

SIGNING HONEY BADGER AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE WOULD BE AWESOME !..A HEALTHY JPP & NADAMOKUNG SUH AT REASONABLE PRICES WOULD BE WISE TO RE-SIGN..LEONARD FORNETTE & ROB GRONKOSKI ARE NO-BRAINERS TO RE-SIGN..RONALD JONES WOULD BE GOOD TRADE-BAIT AS WL AS SEAN-MURPHY BUNTING..WE NEED TO DRAFT A BLUE CHIP GUARD/CENTER IN 1ST RD, A BLUE CHIP DE WITH NEXT PICK, A HARD HITTING SAFETY WITH 3RD PICK ( IN CASE HONEY BADGER DOESN’T SIGN ) CUT BLAINE GABBERT OR TRADE HIM TO CAROLINA FOR WILL GRIER )

  58. David Says:

Man, Winfield and Matthew at safety would be one heck of a duo still have Edwards coming in to play dime. My guess is CD and Dean would start and SMB is nickel

  59. steele Says:

Honey Badger’s personal relationships don’t necessarily mean anything. I just hope they get him. Perfect fit.

Other cheaper options: Terrell Edmunds, Jabrill Peppers.

  60. Buccsfan1 Says:

he would make our defense even better, find a way to sign him and four nette!!!

  61. Anonymous Says:

Ill take my chances with mike edwards. He has played well and has some height. I loved Whitehead but its bothersome to have two safeties that are under 5′-10″. You cant learn or train to be taller. Ive always thought honey badger is overrated

  62. Anonymous Says:

He is not a whitehead … he is a lightweight in comparison

  63. Eric b Says:

    I said this a while ago..SIGN HIM!!!! …SIGN JARVIS!!!…UNFINISHED BUISSNESS LFGO

  64. Kent Says:

JPP was hurt with a torn rotator cuff for the last half of the season Joe, and still played thru it……Of course his production was down

  65. Tony Says:

I’d consider signing Fletcher Cox. Eagles let him go.
