Tristan Wirfs Reacts To News That Alex Cappa Is Signing With Bengals

March 14th, 2022

Joe thinks Tristan Wirfs’ response on Twitter to the apparent loss of right guard Alex Cappa to the defending AFC champs speaks for all Bucs fans today.

It’s damn tough to lose a starter from your Super Bowl team, especially a young one in the trenches in the prime of his career. And what a story Cappa is coming from Division II Humboldt State, a program that no longer exists.

Cappa worked his way from being a late third-round pick into the staring lineup after backing up Caleb Benenoch his rookie year in 2018. (If you can believe such a horror). And Cappa tried to played through a broken arm and a broken leg at different points in his career.

Warrior!

If you can’t replace cappa with someone equa or better you have no business being an nfl gm. We didn’t miss a beat when he was out unlike when wirfs went down.

  2. HC Grover Says:

My thought. Oh well. We got the GOAT!!!!

  3. Buczilla Says:

    Adios mf!

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

We need a left guard not a right guard we have plenty of right guards Stinnie and two or three others.

  5. Mike Says:

Looks like we will be targeting a LG in the draft then…

  6. SlyPirate Says:

I’m guessing the Bucs select Tampa local Nick Petit-Frere.

  7. Bucsfan4ever Says:

Damn, I wish him well. Will miss him.

  8. Infomeplease Says:

Stinnie will grow and fill his shoes!! GO BUCS!!

    geez cappa…..say it ain’t so

  10. August 1976 Buc Says:

Alex just got set for life. Not a giant contract, but he did well. The Bucs are going find someone for sure to take his place, probably Stinnie. Again whatever happens Bucs are going to be fine.

    GO BUCS!!!!

I’m wondering how Carl Nidks’ big toe is doing?

Remember that when Cappa finally did start in those preseason games, he was AWFUL, I mean absolutely terrible. Then, the season started, and he was completely average – never really noticed him again. It was as remarkable of a 2-week turnaround as I’ve ever seen.

Also, keep in mind the reason Cappa didn’t play his rookie year is because he had to beef up, a lot. He was a late-3rd rounder, but most draft pundits had him as a 6th rounder to UDFA. His measurables (at least the ones available) were terrible, in the bottom of every category. It was quite the pick by Licht who deserves all the credit in the world for taking a guy who didn’t appear to have much of a chance in the NFL.

It’s also why people shouldn’t freakout over any offensive lineman. Licht can find guys if need be.

  13. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Can Hainsey play guard? Send like they felt confident he could play center last week.

  14. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Imagine if Licht drafted players who could contribute to the team in the 2021 draft versus drafting all backup and role players…

  15. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

That pic makes me realize how bad the alarm clock unis were, especially the color rush version…

On SB winning teams, your draft picks aren’t supposed to play. Generally the only time you’re starting rookies is when your team stinks. Good teams don’t need to play rookies in meaningful minutes.

  17. Goatfarmer Says:

Capp is a stud. Sad he’s gone but we knew we couldn’t keep everybody and at least he’s going to play in front of a likeable quarterback .

As we all know he was a tackle in college, and trained at center all last year, so the move to guard should be pretty seamless as guard is probably the easiest non-kicking position in football. Not saying it’s easy, but as far as learning it goes, it’s one of the quickest and easiest to learn spots.

  19. Francisco Guzman Says:

I want the bucs to go after Gilmore.

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

Cappa came a long way. I remember those “awful days” too Munch.

We have some options at G: Stinnie, Leverette, Hainsey. Somebody will have to step up.

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Jason Licht was a Lineman at Nebraska, so he knows talent. I have faith he will find some other Gems to replace Marpet and Kappa.

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

Bucs should use free agency to reload offense and draft to reload defense.

  23. Joe Says:

That pic makes me realize how bad the alarm clock unis were, especially the color rush version…

    🤮

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Bucsfanman – Marpet, Wirfs and Smith were all drafted and started from day 1, I have zero doubt Licht can find, if needed, 2 guards in the draft to start.

  25. Goatfarmer Says:

    Cmon Jason. Restructurings. Now.

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Gotta make the O line a priority. brady cannot take a whole lotta hits guys. We should be fine. Its our inabilty to get a pass rush which worries me. Them 2 losses to LA says it all..we need a pass rush. Score 35 all you like. Better stop the other team from scoring 36.

  27. Francisco Guzman Says:

Secondary is a problem. They need to replace davis.

Not sure it is that easy. The Athletic had him as the 5th best free agent guard.

Their best free agent guard, Brandon Scherff, signed with Jacksonville.

If it is that easy to replace Cappa, why did he get 10 million a year and Stinnie got a 1 year 2.5 million deal. Maybe relying on a three-game stretch for Stinnie is the mistake here by you.

  29. CalBucsFan Says:

Come on PewPow, you really don’t mean that, do ya? Licht has done a great job building this team and I have no doubt he will continue in spite of the cap challenges.

  30. Francisco Guzman Says:

I am looking at the cap situation for most teams and there’s not many teams with cap space. I mean some have used it already. We could see some players on one year deals.

I want the bucs to replace davis with a veteran like gilmore.

This is true, but keep in mind the Bucs played a lot of zone last year — at least compared to previous Bowles years. I’m not recommending they do it all the time, but you can get away with lesser corners in a zone. Also Bowles could always go to more zone blitzing to still get pressure and actually use White correctly.

But unlike guards, drafting and starting a corner is really really dangerous as they can take years to get any good, it’s a rare exception when a corner can come in and play from day 1. Then again, it’s even more rare a safety can do that, and Winfield was about to pull it off. Still, it’s really pressing your luck.

  32. Francisco Guzman Says:

Rod Munch i am hoping they go after Gilmore. Get a veteran.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Guzman – obviously just depends on money, but I’m going to guess Gilmore will be outside their budget. But if they can get him, and still get Gronk and Fournette and whoever else Brady wants, I’d be OK with it.

  34. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Get your money son it won’t be there forever! Imagine all the people who never saw you getting a $40 million contract because of where you came from!

Now that we have Da GOAT back someone should print shirts saying Got G.O.A.T. ??? Guess Who Does??? With a big ol Beautiful Bucs helmet underneath.

Any news or intel on other FAs @joebucsfan

  36. ItzOK Says:

I look forward to the Bucs welcoming back Cappa and the bengals to ray Jay buy properly kicking his ass. Other than that happy the guy got his money and any warm body should be an upgrade to help protect poor Joe Burrow

  37. donuts Says:

RE: HAINSEY: “We see him as a real versatile guy,” said General Manager Jason Licht, who noted that the Buccaneers liked what they saw of Hainsey as a tackle. “It’s not that we don’t think that he can play right tackle, but we do think that he has a big upside at guard or center, which he also played at the Senior Bowl and kind of caught our attention, just the versatility aspect. He’s a captain, he’s a tough guy, he’s very smart. He’s got all the traits that our current group has. I think he’s going to fit in great. He’s going to be a guy that hopefully we can plug in at several positions, be a four-spot guy possibly at some point.”

  38. adam from ny Says:

    cappa the defector…

if it wasn’t for licht and the bucs he might not even be in the nfl…

he came in without an nfl body and the bucs had him build his physique into an nfler…

he kinda owes licht like half his salary… 🙂

dam…really hate to lose him tho…

he will have icicles hanging off his keesters in cincy

  39. Joe Says:

Any news or intel on other FAs @joebucsfan

Why exactly would Joe hold back news this time of the year, or at any time?

  40. James G Arntz Says:

Perhaps the ‘changing of the guards’ will improve the Bucs’ running game!

  41. adam from ny Says:

also being sandwiched between jensen and wirfs for a few years would earn him another big contract in the future…

in cincy he is sorta sandwiched between scrubs

  42. ModHairKen Says:

Cappa got pushed around a lot. Fact.

  43. Stanglassman Says:

Cappa is a good player. That dude got better every year. I can’t say that for most of them. He was so raw coming out. I couldn’t believe they were putting him on the field.
He had the best college tape of any player. It might not have been the highest competition but he punished those guys. We’ll love and miss you Cap. Go do what you do.

  44. LakelandSteve Says:

Hainsey will have to step up and be a starter and with Stinnie and now Jensen back we should be ok as long as we can find some capable backups

  45. Eddie Marz Says:

Gonna miss him, but it’s going to be his loss. GOBUCS!

  46. RandsABucFan Says:

Can the Bucs match the coin he could get on the open market? ..he’s aware Tom’s coming back, ..right? $40,000,000 is a lot of coins

  47. RandsABucFan Says:

I was just thinking Bucs vs. Bengals next SB
