The Mental Approach With Blaine Gabbert

March 5th, 2022

Bucs QB Blaine Gabbert

Joe is still trying to figure out what Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians sees in Blaine Gabbert.

Arians’ pro-Gabbert arguments make sense, until you realize Arians benched Gabbert in Arizona. So Gabbert has transformed into a solid starting quarterback since by starting how many games? Three … in 2018?

But to hear Arians explain the benefits of Gabbert this week at the combine at the Indiana Convention Center, it is Gabbert’s smarts that set him apart. Arians even gave Gabbert credit for being Tom Brady’s tutor two years ago.

“Yeah, he’s been in about eight systems, but he has been in this one for five years,” Arians said. “He was crucial to Tom [Brady’s] development. He’s got the answers to the test. Now, does he still have the skill level to do it? I think so.”

This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, that Gabbert can lead the Bucs on a Super Bowl run. But you know what? Arians has a whole lot of street cred. So Joe hopes he has something up his sleeve.

This has the rotten stench of when lousy Lovie Smith tried to sell the Tampa Bay area on Stewart McClown as a Super Bowl-winning quarterback. The difference here is Joe respects Arians and admires his quarterback history and wisdom.

Regardless of who starts….we should sign Gabbert…..he knows the offense and the players know him….he’ll be cheap…..a questionable starter but a worthwhile backup.

  2. Niles Says:

Arians’ objectives are either (1) building up Gabbert as a trade chip or (2) selling tickets.

I beginning to think Arians was at the right place at the right time. He didnt draft Manning or Luck he was just on the staff. He also was going to work wonders with Winston. And Josh Rosen he had two chances. Just saying.

  4. Anonymous Says:

If he’s so smart why does he have a career record of 50 TDs to 47 INTs?

    @ Letsbuccinggo

I agree. Arians won with Brady. Big deal. Switzer won too with the loaded Dallas team.

  7. crasey Says:

Could Gabbert manage the offense well enough as Brad Johnson did – not if you don’t fix the leaky defense. Gabbert’s unlikely to average 30+ pts per game so the D’s gonna have to hold the score down.

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

Medicated Niles: Do you think Brady won the Super Bowl every year he played? Don’t be a meat whistle your whole life.

  9. Beeej Says:

There is no QB we’re likely going to sign this month

I can guarantee you BA doesn’t care a lick about selling tickets.

Either the Bucs swing a deal for a star qb (realistically unlikely) or they need a bridge qb from the wildly mediocre FA market to compete w Trask. BA knows this is the reality, many talking heads and commenters still do not apparently.

All mediocre FA’s being equal, BA is saying that at least Gabbert knows the system. No he isn’t a pro-bowler, no he doesn’t make this team an instant super bowl contender, but that kind of guy is just not out there to be easily had. Now if you prefer a different brand of mediocre qb that’s your prerogative.

For the long run we need to see what we have in Trask and/or prepare to draft someone early in ‘23.

  11. HC Grover Says:

The Son Bucco always wanted? The 22 Bucconeers are going to be a whole new experience. Who Dat gonna beat them Stanks? Buccobruce finally gets his chance w/o Brady getting the credit.

  12. firethecannons Says:

we lose with gabbert–we have a chance with trask so with excellent o line perhaps Trask can make this work out

  13. phattitudes Says:

I suspect he sees insurance, a capable body if required. Yet he also sees freedom to deal with the unexpected like a Brady Return, a Rivers return, a giant leap from Trask or a QB dump by some other team. Gabbert will do is it must be so in a very weak division. However I believe they want to keep their options open for a last minute Hail Mary of sorts. This is a loaded team and the offense can be dumbed down to lent Gabbert manage it if necessary. However I suspect another answer at QB will arrive before game 1. It may even be Trask, but it doesn’t have to be. That is the key.

“Arians has a whole lot of street cred.” Truth, so did Vanilla Ice until the curtain was pulled back. This will be the 1st time in a long time BA has to earn his keep without a top qb. We saw his “cred” at work with Winston and now he’s pitching a fa that continues to be overlooked in a qb hungry league. I hope BA is successful, nobody cheered louder when was hired, but I’m starting to feel that he is more of a bs whisperer than a qb whisperer.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t you just luv the NFL? No faking guys. We shall soon see if Gabbert is the man. Lets just hope for our sake, He’s a late bloomer. Trask will get his shot sometime during the season. Perhaps sooner than he even thinks. Hellava league. One year you are boastful and bragging. And the very next year, you are begging for a slice of that…Humble Pie.

  16. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike Johnson. Blain Gabbert is trash and all ways have been even in college he was average or below. It’s nothing left to see with Gabbert!!

  17. HC Grover Says:

Here coemes the Gabbert Howard duo. They prolly keep Howard and Darden too. Wont have many sacks cept the 22 Sad Sacks.

  18. Buczilla Says:

I’m going to go mental if this lousy qb is our starter.
