Bruce Arians Benched Blaine Gabbert For Drew Stanton

March 4th, 2022

Bruce Arians during his Cardinals days.

There’s no truth better than black-and-white history.

Joe asked someone in the know about the facts below at the NFL Scouting Combine and all that came back was a smirk.

Bucco Bruce Arians raves about Blaine Gabbert and how well respected he is in the Bucs locker room and how much he’s gained by being in Arians’ offensive system for several years. Arians also lauds Gabbert for the job he did as a backup in five starts in Arizona back in 2017.

What Arians doesn’t say is Gabbert was benched for Drew Stanton after those five games.

ArizonaSports.com is the site for the big sports radio station in Phoenix. Joe thinks it’s worth noting that Arians had a great relationship with at least one the station’s shows and it seems the whole crew of hosts there still loves Arians to this day. (Yeah, Joe mines Arizona sports radio.)

Here’s what was written there after Gabbert’s fifth start for the Cardinals:

In five games, all starts, Gabbert has completed 95 of 171 attempts (55.6 percent) for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns. He has thrown six interceptions and he has fumbled seven times, losing two.

Ball security is a consistent issue, but on a recent radio interview with 98.7 FM Arizona’ Sports Station, general manager Steve Keim highlighted another one. Gabbert has difficulty making touch passes to the outside, and that was on display again against the Redskins.

The most maddening aspect of Sunday’s game was the Cardinals’ red-zone ineptness. They were 0 for 6 on the touchdown scale and the reasons were simple.

“You’ve just got to make throws and make catches,” Arians told Calvisi. “We had some third-and-shorts where we just had to complete balls.”

.
So what happened hours after this article published? Arians benched Gabbert, went with Drew Stanton, and the Arizona GM talked about how the loss in Gabbert’s fifth start was one of the worst performances by an offense he’s seen.

    but that outfit ^^^^^^^^ 🙂

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

If were going to be an average team, might as well be interesting. Gabbert nor Trask will not sell seats. Sign a free agent QB and it would be a success if the Bucs can at least make a post season game with an early exit in year 1 of the post Brady era.

  3. Marine Buc Says:

    From a different article – Dec 17, 2017

“Head coach Bruce Arians announced on Monday that Drew Stanton will replace Blaine Gabbert in the starting lineup. Arians had said on Sunday he would be sticking with Gabbert, but clearly a review of the film changed his mind. Gabbert finished Sunday’s game 16 of 41 for 189 yards and one interception.”

    16 of 41 for 189 – 1 INT and 0 TDs – yikes…

Im not sure about the WRs or O-line the Cards had back then but no doubt those are horrible numbers.

  4. Rayjay1122 Says:

I have a feeling that unless we bring in a solid vet at QB, next season Trask will beat out Gabbert to be the new starter. Gabbert remains the back up after nobody signs him and he takes whatever offer is given by the Bucs. This is not necessarily a bad thing though as Trask may surprise us all and be really good.

  5. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

It is no coincidence that bruce arrogance best year was when he was furthest away from the team. It confirms some of the rumors of players calling the coach, “bruce absent”

    Go Bucs!

  6. tampabayallday Says:

Just gotta reload the roster and we can get TB12 out of retirement

  7. AL121976 Says:

What was Stanton’s numbers after he took over? Was it a bad team all together or was it just simply Gabbert?

  8. Steven007 Says:

It is clear that Proud Bucs Troll has nothing else to add. Nothing. He is obsessed with our coach. He is horrified by the fact that he has won two coach of the year awards. He is mortified that he is now also a super bowl winning head coach. By any metric he has been a successful coach and previously a successful and respected coordinator. He’s a hater. It’s that simple. OneNote troll. The usual internet policy is DNFTT. Do not feed the troll. But sometimes he deserves a morsel or two.

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

I guess BA is a little desperate these days. No one wants to play for the abusive, blame deflecting, fabricator, senile Uncle Buc and his all star staff of clowns.

    Anger!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The bar is set so very low for Gabbert….we may as well give him a shot…..if he throws a completion….or much less a touchdown pass….we should be thrilled….ecstatic…overwhelmed…..over the moon excited.

    Hallelujah…..whoopie-doo, Blaine thew a touchdown…FIRE THE CANNONS!!!

  12. Steven007 Says:

List, had no idea you were on the Bucs staff. Bravo!

  14. Listnfrmafar Says:

Yes Joe anger, you had to bring up the Rams game earlier this week. Bucs wish it was 1987, another enlightening post AGAIN!

  15. Pewter Power Says:

Don’t think gabbert will be any good which is why I would go with trask if they are close or if Gabbert can’t win games.

Great article but no context added. Gabbert was signed in the off-season of 2017. He was the third string quarterback behind Palmer who went on IR along with Chris Johnson. Drew Stanton had been in Arizona since like 2014-2015. They also had no receivers at all except LF unless you want to count jj Nelson

  16. mike Says:

and Kap was benched for Gabbert

  17. JimbobBucsFan Says:

As a fan I don’t think about what sells seats for the ownership’s benefit first. I am selfish that way.

As lowly “poor white trash” I spent a few Bucs for seats in RayJay in the 20 years previous to the arrival of Tom Brady. Last year I did not get in to any home games to watch the G.O.A.T. set all of those records.

Don’t get me wrong reality is reality. I am not bitter in any sense. I just happened to have been around when we won our first Lombardi Trophy. The line for season tickets was about five miles long for a couple of years after that. Getting more than two end zone tickets side by side wasn’t all that easy either. I saw what was coming a couple of years ago.

Again, at my age I was content to be able to watch all of the games over a couple of beers in my local establishment or from my couch this past season. Call me blue collar rather than “trash” if you like. 😃 (It was a bit of an exaggeration. 😆)

    Go Bucs!

  18. BA4President Says:

Anyone who calls what Arians did on the sideline “abusive” shouldn’t ever be allowed to drive a car or make important decisions…

A 69 year old man on a gimp foot hobbled over to a player and slapped the top of his helmet to get his attention and stop the player from drawing a personal foul. If that’s abusive, then I guess Sesame Street should be rated NC-17

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … Nice find. Got curious after that about the Cards 2017 year. Turns out they went 8-8 using 3 different QBs (Palmer 3-4; Gabbert 2-3; Stanton 3-1). Cards scored a grand total of 295 pts that season; offense scored 281 pts, while defense added 14 pts. Cards defense allowed a grand total of 361 pts that season (of which the Cards’ offense gave away 28 pts via 2 Pick 6 & 2 fumble returns and the Cards’ S/Ts gave away a kickoff return for 7 pts).

IOW, Cards offense was HORRENDOUS that season (18.4 PPG average), yet the team STILL managed to break even (thanks mostly to their defense it appears). So bad that Bucco Bruce retired for health reasons.

What’s just as interesting to me though is that when Wilks took over in 2018 , he had very little to work with. He started 2 different QBs (Rosen 3-10; Bradford 0-3), the team went 3-13, and Wilks went bye-bye (maybe Bruce saw the writing on the broadcast booth in 2017?). Kingsbury took over in 2019, drafted Kyler Murray, and they promptly went 5-10-1. To his credit though, Kingsbury has improved the Cards’ record every year since (and just won a nice contract extension).

I hope that doesn’t describe the coming saga of how the Bucs will be doing over the next several years as we seek a starting QB & rebuild the team. Oh wait, this isn’t a rebuild I forgot. Make that while we ‘retool’ the team. More better.

  20. Niles Says:

    “Rayjay1122 Says:
    Trask may surprise us all”

Arians said this about Trask yesterday: “I’ve got a year with Kyle. Got to see Kyle every single day, watch him improve those nuances in the pocket, cause he ain’t afraid to stand in there. He can really sling it. He’s got all the throws.”

“He can really sling it. He’s got all the throws.” – So why would you be surprised if Trask performed well? Because you wear an FSU jersey?

  21. Cleanhouse Says:

    Better off w Jameis

  22. Craig Says:

Stanton was 3-1 in 2017, the year Gabbert went 2-3. We had Stanton on the COVID squad last season, can he come back?

Trask might be ready, might not get hurt, might win a Stupor Bowl. I would still like a decent #2 behind him, and I have my doubts about Gabbert. I’ve seen Griffin look good, I have never seen Gabbert look good.

  23. Tbbucs3 Says:

“So why would you be surprised if Trask performed well? Because you wear an FSU jersey?“

Because the people that thing Trask is gonna be any good are in the minority. Hint- not everybody is a UF fan.

  24. Listnfrmafar Says:

BA4Pres@ smacked around as kid were ya? I was to and I had the enjoyment of watching my siblings take their fair share of shots. That’s why I NEVER laid a hand on my kids. IT IS ABUSIVE!!!

  25. Bojim Says:

Unless we pick up a good QB then might as well play Trask. After we re-sign Godwin of course. 😁

  26. Rayjay1122 Says:

Love how mental midgits love to attack a simple post and if you were here long you would know that I am an OG and if you kept track of my posts then you would know that I am a UF fan. Let me clarify though for the slow learners, when I said surprise people I was referring to the general national perspective which would very much be surprised if Trask becomes a franchise QB. I do not share the national perspective Nile and TBBUC3

  27. Hodad Says:

That was five years ago. Gabbert is still with Arains, and Statton is out of football. Big deal, times change, so do people.

  28. SufferingSince76 Says:

Listnfrmafar, you don’t know one thing about Arians and you have only one incident you can point to where he “laid hands “ on a grown man during the heat of the game. All you do, along with Proud Butt Fan, is whine and cry about Arians as if he took your lunch money.

  29. Buccos Says:

Let Gabbert and Trask duel it out for QB1 and hope Brady changes his mind. In the meantime re-sign as many of our best young free agents as possible. 1) Godwin 2) Davis 3) Whitehead

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Listnfrmafar…Go away you Patriots hack. I’ve been on site for the past 10 years and made more then plenty of posts. I’m quite well known on JBF.

You’re just an annoying Patriots troll that found his way to our site when Tom Brady became a Buc. He’s gone now and you should follow, but you choose to stay and antagonize my fellow Buc fans.

So I will continue to call you out for what you are…so everyone realizes the idiot they are dealing with…YES a PATRIOTS FAN on a Bucs related site.

    Idiot.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

In fact….I hope Brady really doesn’t ever come back if it means having you on the site for a longer period of time.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    Joe should ban Pats fans.

  33. Stone crab sam Says:

But what about the pats fans that are also trump fans?
Should Joe ban those fans too?😂

  34. Sersca Says:

ope Brady really doesn’t ever come back if it means having you on the site for a longer period of time.

  35. Listnfrmafar Says:

Buc I wish it was 1987, take a chill pill, life is too short bro. Prior to following the Bucs used to think Arians was ok until I’ve seen him in action the last two seasons. Not Good! Ya I know he won a SB, blah, blah blah, we all know Brady got the Bucs their SB. BA went 7-9 with the Probowl QB that threw for 5000 yds. FYI, people that go after someone in anger to the point they need to strike them has an anger issue and it’s not a first time occurrence. You will all realize it next season. BA is probably blow smoke up Gabberts arse so when the Bucs shat the bed he has his fall guy like he did with Winston.

  36. Listnfrmafar Says:

Oh, I am not Trump fan but definitely a fan of.his policies. Let us not forget the US was energy dependent prior to Biden, how we doing now? Worst administration EVER!!!
