Russell Wilson Leaves The NFC

March 8th, 2022

UPDATED 2:31 p.m. – The rebuild is on in Seattle, meaning the NFC playoff road just got a shade easier for the Bucs.

Wilson was traded to Denver today for a package of first-round draft picks and quarterback Drew Lock.

Last week, Bucs officials were very clear that the 2022 trade market for quarterbacks is flimsy or non-existent. Perhaps things have changed. …Joe can dream.

If Seattle doesn’t draft quarterback in the first round next month, then Joe sure hopes the Bucs won’t be in the quarterback market next year. They would have one more conference foe chasing the same goal with more shopping capital.

This is a cake walk conference with a good QB.

  5. SKBucsFan Says:

Seattle wasn’t going to be a threat. They need too many players to even compete in their division.
Thank goodness Licht didn’t mortgage the future for a QB that can only thrive in a defensively strong team.

  6. gbobucsfan Says:

Broncos get Russ and a 4th.
    Seattle gets 2-1sts 2-2nds 5th AND
    Drew Lock
    Noah Fant
    Shelby Harris

WOW – isn’t Russ’ contract only for 2 years? Then said he wants Mahomes money??

  7. Francisco Guzman Says:

“If Seattle doesn’t draft quarterback in the first round next month, then Joe sure hopes the Bucs won’t be in the quarterback market next year.“

Kyle Trask is better than any of the QB’s in this year’s draft, and it’s not even close. Seattle just gave up their Super Bowl QB without a viable or quick plan to replace him, something that was reported would not happen. Bucs easily could have had Wilson, and Trask would have held more weight in a trade than Drew Lock.

Looks like this was a blunder by the Bucs.

  9. Francisco Guzman Says:

adam from nyc look what the broncos gave up?

  10. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Seattle would not have traded him tot he NFC so stop crying that we didn’t do the deal.

NFC is wide open, if Arians is a decent coach we should be a playoff team. If not it was all because, of Brady

  11. godlovesbucs Says:

Way too much. It would have been bad for us, who would we have given them?

    ____________

NFC has won the last 2 SBs haven’t they?

  13. Miller5252 Says:

I’m with walkdaPlank. You could have given up enough to get Wilson and finally have a long term franchise QB. I think Tampa blew this one unless Wilson would only be willing to be traded to the Broncos

  14. Buddha Says:

Denver following Rams playbook but without a Kupp. Ridiculous trade.

  15. Francisco Guzman Says:

@DoooshLaRue i am talking about the competition dude within the nfc. You have teo chokers in dak and Rodgers. You also have Stafford. Not much after that. Brady needs to unretire.

  16. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Kyle Trask is better than any of the QB’s in this year’s draft, and it’s not even close“

What a ridiculous statement. First of all you have no way of knowing this, second of all Picket, Willis and Corral are all very talented.

  17. adam from ny Says:

    still disgusted 🙁

  18. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Tbbucs3

Out of the 3 QB’s you mentioned (the top 3 QB’s in the draft) only of those guy played opponents with the same NFL talent as Trask, and that’s Corral. Mind you, Corral is the same QB who had not one but two 5 INT games.

Trask is clearly more valuable at this stage until one of those guys proves otherwise.

Ah yes, the old “Because we wanted a trade to happen, it should have!” mentality.

  20. Its a Bucs Life Says:

Seattle was NOT gonna send Wilson to a NFC team. Especially one they play this year. Man, we have the stupidest fanbase in the league.

But you have a way of knowing Trask will not excel, right? What an idiot. Go wash your Jamoist Winston FSU jersey.

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s literally mortgaging the future. How could you want this for the Bucs?

    2 Firsts
    2 Seconds
    a former 1st round pick
    a former 2nd round pick
and one 7th round guy for good measure!

    That is way too much.

  24. gbobucsfan Says:

They are going to flip those picks plus some of theirs and get Watson. I will be the first to report it.

  27. Francisco Guzman Says:

Bucs need to make some moves in order to entice Brady.

  28. Aceofaerospace Says:

Face it, you haters may be forced to give Trask a chance. Why any of you are so sure this group of college kids is so much better than Trask baffles me. We don’t know yet. At least Trask has been in this system a year learning from the greatest that ever donned a helmet. It’s not doomsday until it’s doomsday.

  29. Listnfrmafar Says:

Roger’s just got the easiest job in the NFL winning the NFC and got a cool $200 MM for it. Am I the only one that wants to see this ass.hat fail? He has NO balls, dodged the AFC loaded with QB’s. I don’t think Josh McDaniels is saying to the Raiders organization, How do ya like me now? Carr just became worst QB in the AFC West. WOW, Wilson, Hebert, Mahomes , OUCH!

  30. VabucSINCE’97 Says:

We should sign and trade Godwin ok have a good day

  31. Francisco Guzman Says:

List i am pretty sure these nfc teams will make some moves. I can see the 49ers bringing back jimmy G.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

Bucsfanman … Precisely. Broncos more than likely got screwed & Seattle will now have an opportunity to BUILD A TEAM that can thrive for years to come.

Seahawks now have almost $35 mil in CAP space for this year after the trade, and that’s AFTER taking a $26 mil hit for Russell Wilson in Dead CAP this year. I presume that the two 1sts & two 2nds are in 2022 & 2023, so Seattle, when you include their own picks this year & next, will have a boatload of picks to ‘reload’ their team. Shelby Harris isn’t spectacular, but he is more than serviceable as a DT (6 sacks last year). Noah Fant is a former 1st-Rnd pick who’s had a very nice 3-year career thus far & improved every year. He’s a keeper.

Broncos got their QB, but Wilson only has 2 years left on this contract. Wilson’s durable, but I’m not nearly as impressed with him as I am with QBs like Patrick Mahomes & Josh Allen. It’ll be interesting to see if he’s really the missing piece of the puzzle in Denver.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    Wilson leaves NFC…

Now if we could only get known Patriots fan Listnfrmafar to leave JBF.

  34. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Godwin got franchised.

  35. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Minnesota Vikings Kirk Cousins is now the third best QB in the NFC and he is in a division with Rodgers, Fields, and Goff.

NFC South NFC West and NFC East are wide open with only Stafford, Dak and maybe Jimmy G/Winston returning.

Tampa with even Wentz/Jimmy/Winston is a playoff team in this conference.

With Brady/Gronk/Chris/Evans/Fourantte + another weapon I would say no1 seed.

No Brees, Rivers, Wilson, Brady, Manning to prevent a playoff run for fellow NFC teams, really only Rodgers and Stafford now.

  36. BucsFan81 Says:

Actually I think this is a win for Seattle. That’s a pretty big haul for a guy that maybe has 5 years left. We could have easily won the NFC if Brady didn’t retire only good QB left in the conference are Stafford and Rodgers and we all know Rodgers post season record.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

So the Bucs would have had to give up two 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd, plus Vita Vea to beat out the Broncos.

For a 33-year old QB, who is really good – yeah, I’d do that in a second if I thought he can play for another 7-10 years.

Seattle, however, was very doubtful to trade to the NFC I’m guessing, and probably would have wanted more.

  38. SufferingSince76 Says:

No way do you make this deal. Bucs need every pick unless it’s traded for more picks.

  39. cmurda Says:

No Rod. No. I’m glad we stood strong. Russell isn’t Brady. He’s good but he isn’t giving up Vita and all those picks good. Nope. Let’s find a guy that is younger. For once draft our guy. Hopefully that’s Trask but this also isn’t the same dream team as last year. If we had everyone coming back, I could be swayed into a Ditka move.

  40. Bucs Guy Says:

Call up Pete Carroll and trade your first round pick to Seattle for two second picks from Denver. That can help Seattle move up to draft a QB.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

cmurda – Literally no one else is Brady and that’s a ridiculous standard to have for anyone. Also giving up a part-time player run stuffer, who is in there on 43% of defensive snaps, I’d do in a second for a top 10 QB. Vita isn’t Warren Sapp, he doesn’t make the defense run – he’s a 2 down run stuffer who doesn’t even play on a lot of those 2 downs. I know it sounds like I’m bashing Vita, but to be clear, I think he’s a very good run stuffer, but people vastly overrated his value.

As far as guys you’d have to trade, and you’d have to trade someone, you only really have a few guys, Vita, White, Wirfs and Winfield, and out of those guys, the one I’d give up in every single case is Vita. Again, not saying I’d want to give him up, but if you’re getting a franchise QB, and Wilson is that, you have to give up something, and the Bucs draft picks are going to be in the upper 20s, maybe even the 30s if they had Wilson, meaning they don’t have a ton of value.

As for Trask – I have zero faith in him, I’m thinking he’s a 3-14 QB. He’s basically a rookie, barely even practiced last year, has to relearn how to throw the football since he doesn’t throw with velocity – he’s very much a project QB. Maybe if he spent the year as the #2 backup, got a ton more practice snaps, continues to work on throwing with velocity, then next offseason, perhaps then you let him compete for a starting job. But this year? It will absolutely be a disaster, Gabbert will be starting by the 3rd game, and Licht and Arians would get fired at the end of the season if they went all-in on the team, except for QB.

  42. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Waldaplank

If you want to reference Corralls bad games, want to also explain Trask final college preformance against Oklahoma where he threw 3 ints in the first quarter?

  43. tampabuscsbro Says:

Tbbucs3, that was one game not multiple games. He was also down the only other two bright spots on that offense.

Also Corral was meh his entire college career. It’s not comparable.

  44. tampabuscsbro Says:

also guys the broncos were us going into 2020. A QB short of being good to great. We didn’t have the high picks and as much expendable talent to get him.

    ———

The Bucs had a good young high productive QB, but Brady is an all-time elite QB who changed the entire franchise before he even played a snapped. He’s literally the only player who could have done what he did.

The Broncos, however, had complete garbage at QB, nothing on their roster was even close to a good as Winston. So while Wilson isn’t Brady, Wilson is going to a team with a very good defense and some good offensive weapons, although nothing close to the Bucs WRs. Wilson will make the Broncos a very good team, but I doubt he gets them to the SB, but he does make the relevant, and for more than 2-years. I think it was an excellent move by them.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

Mr Munch … ‘As for Trask – I have zero faith in him, I’m thinking he’s a 3-14 QB.’

Probably a good thing your first boss didn’t say the same thing about you (‘I have zero faith in him’) BEFORE you ever did a lick of work for him. Or her. And QB records at least partially reflect how good the TEAM was, not just the QB.

But at least you’re keeping an open mind, so there’s that.

  47. acey Says:

For all of you doofuses saying we messed up here and that we could’ve had Russ, take a minute to think about what the Broncos just moved to get him. Two 1sts, two 2nds, and a 5th. Denver picks at #9 this year. They also moved Noah Fant and Shelby Harris, both capable players at TE and DE respectively, in addition to Drew Locke. On top of that, Locke and Fant are both still young players. Now, what do you think the Bucs would’ve had to put up to compete with that picking at #27?

  48. SlyPirate Says:

    STOP LIVING IN 2020-2021

Losing Marpet and franchising CG closes the Buc’s championship window …

Wilson would just have made a bad cap situation worse. The Buc’s are officially rebuilding. The Bucs need to crush the next 2-3 drafts.

  49. Bucnjim Says:

Some fans crack me up. You know Wilson also has to want to come here right? Most likely he wanted to stay out west and had no interest in heading east. There are so many variables in making a trade work.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

Just remember it was last week i think where the “news” was that the Seahawks were not willing to trade Wilson. Im listening now and some nerd is reporting that this is a trade the Broncos and Seahawks have been working on for a while.

It goes to show you that nothing that you hear on this time of year should be taken at face value.

    ____________

    DR,

I usually agree with you but I have to take exception to the comment about Fancy Man, Rod Munch.
I know for certain that his first boss had all the confidence in the world in him and only asked that he shed a few pounds before starting.

    And guess what?

Rod lost the weight thru diet, mild bulimia and Dexatrim and ended up filling out those size 12 Hooter’s shorts just right.

Anywho, the rest…. as they say…. is history.

  52. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    2 1st & 2 2nd round picks & 3 players….wow….for 2 years on a 33 year old QB……I don’t know about you folks….but I sure wouldn’t be happy if the Bucs made that trade…..talk about mortgaging your future.
And keep in mind…the Broncos had the 9th pick…..

I like Seattle’s potential rebuild possibilities.

  53. RIs_Buc Says:

Seattle was never going to trade to NFC team. Simple as that. It was NEVER in the cards

  54. Scooter Says:

Wilson is short and can’t see over the lineman. He needs mobility to run around behind the lineman and find passing lanes and he definitely lost a step last season.

  55. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think Seattle got the best of this deal. Denver gave up their Soul for Wilson who BYW has to approve this deal. He has a no trade clause, but if I were him, I would go. Denver could contend, and Seattle is rebuilding.

  56. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Bucsfanman

    How about this…

    Tom Brady to San Francisco

    For

    -3 1st. Round Picks
    -2 2nd. Round Picks
    -DT Javon Kinlaw
    -G Aaron Banks

  57. Pewter Power Says:

Brady could comeback and have an easy path to the nfc championship because the only real threat he would face this year at this moment is baby whiny rodgers and team injuries

  58. cmurda Says:

@Rod. Brady isn’t the standard I expect all QB’s to live up to which is why I don’t expect Wilson to play for another 7-10 years. You see where I’m going here. I think you are vastly undervaluing Vita. He’s much more than you give him credit for. He actually is very capable with the pass rush. He throws 300 lb men off of him and often times forces Qb’s to give up on plays or scramble. Anyway it doesn’t matter with Vea. Wilson isn’t worth a fraction of that. 24 year old Wilson? Yes. Last year’s version? Not even close. Bad line or not. He is not the same guy he once was. Those legs don’t work like they used to.

  59. adam from ny Says:

russell wilson is really really good guys…

he played with a badly injured hand last year…or thumb…

a year of rest and he will be fine to rock and roll again…

we should have gotten him and traded away tom brady for a small kitchen sink…then dumped those trade pieces into the wilson deal…

or given seattle a small kitchen sink for wilson, then dumped brady for our own small kitchen sink in return to break relatively even and still have a qb…

  60. adam from ny Says:

right now godwin is on the horn like:

“hey lichtie. please just trade me to denver this week…thanks”

  61. adam from ny Says:

godwin’s wife works out and all, but right about now she’s like:

“dang chris this briefcase be all heavy and sh!t, you carry it!”

  62. steele Says:

Win/win for both teams. Seattle got a lot to work with, and I’ve been saying here that Drew Lock still has big potential, and at worst, he’s solid enough as a backup.
Could we have offered Seattle as much? I’m not sure.

  63. steele Says:

Trask. As of last preseason (the last on-field public evidence we have), he does not look better than the top QBs in this draft. There’s talent among Pickett, Strong, Corral, Howell, Ridder. Has Trask improved since? We’ll see. The grade remains incomplete.

  64. Oneilbuc Says:

Steel. You just a Trask hater bro lol 😆 😂 he was playing with guys who they knew wasn’t going to be on the team. He was better than the quarterbacks that was drafted before him in 2020 ! How did Trevor Lawrence , Justin Feilds, Trey Lance, look when they played with the starters on their teams 🤔. Trask should be the starter this is not a superbowl roster all those hall of famers Brady played with are gone!!! It’s time to see what Trask got if not then it is official that the bucs is where young quarterbacks careers come and die and if I’m Trask I would ask to get me out of Tampa !! No more excuses on why we can’t develop our own quarterback Trask was the number one quarterback in completions, touchdowns, and yards with only 8 picks. No excuses !!

  65. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs trying to stay relevant and competitive is too much to ask for from this team and the entire organization. Reality will set in soon.
