Russell Gage Got Big Money!

March 15th, 2022

“Pipe down, Glazer. Hand over the checkbook and watch me work.”

Somewhere, Antonio Brown is throwing furniture.

Wow! The contract is out on new Buccaneers receiver Russell Gage and it’s impressive. Gage, 26 and freshly nabbed by the Bucs after four seasons in Atlanta, scored a three-year, $30 million contract that includes $20 million guaranteed, per ESPN.

Brown was earning about $6 million last year before he quit.

Tampa Bay, despite salary cap issues, is printing money like the federal government. What next? Tom Brady gets a PPP loan? (Oh, wait, that happened.)

The Bucs are flat out reloading on offense, and the Gage signing was critical with Chris Godwin coming off knee surgery. He could miss the first half of the season.

The end result coming is that the Bucs are going to have to cut some salaries tomorrow. Cameron Brate’s fat cap hit looks like an unaffordable luxury, and the Bucs kicking specialists might not want to get too cozy in Tampa.

Yeah, the Bucs have the best receiving corps in the NFC with this addition of Gage, who is an exciting talent. With the Bucs’ big-3 at receiver and Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller and Cyril Grayson, that may be the best six-man corps in the game.

I was thinking the same thing on AB. He is got to be flipping out. Not sure how this guy is worth 10 per year. But he is a great third guy to have. Rums good routes. Runs 4.42. But williams from chargers got 20 mil per year. I think the bucs are locking this guy down because godwin will probably be gonzo next year. Some team may give him 25 a year next year. Bucs already paying evans big bucks so not likely to keep both.

Gronk should be next so no reason bucs cant pick up where we left off before guys started getting injured last year. And new guy will not be a headcase like AB. Not a drama queen

  2. Bird Says:

I think AB goes to wherever watson goes in NFC south. I mean AB can go hey you signed spooge boy so we good

Either that or he is NO bound. They have no moral values there

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

Might Godwin be the cap casualty?

  4. Todd Says:

Rumor has it Suh is converting to wideout to ensure an extended 3-year $30MM deal.

  5. Delson Says:

Oline rb, te if there is a guy who can block catch n run routes. We dont need gronk or brate at the salaries they command n we wont have to worry about te next offseason. People concerned over godwin due to the gage signing dont understand how big of a loss our slot was when ab ran away. We get a guy with experience n the ability to win those slot matchups. Stinnie or hainsey can slide to g. Is hainsey ready? If we take rb 1st round i wouldnt be mad as long as he is a 3 down back..

  6. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

    ^^WHAT????^^

  7. SC. Bucs Fan Says:

Sure Dooosh. I think Brady is probably in danger of being a cap casualty too.

  8. Alstott up the gut Says:

I (unfortunately) totally agree on Brate and the special teams players. A lot of money there needed for the future of the Bucs. As for the Gage salary, look at what free agent wide receivers are making this offseason: Clark gets 10 for a year, Gallup over 12 a year, Wilson almost 8 a year and of course Kirk an insane 18 a year. I think this number is fine, but shows how much Godwin is going to eventually cost.

  9. Ash Says:

Did hear the way they were falling all over themselves for him there is no way they let Godwin go. Alot of contract restructures/extensions are coming for sure though

  10. Dick LeBeau Jr. Says:

The “WHAT” was in response to Godwin being a cap casualty.

  11. Alstott up the gut Says:

    *Chark

  12. Delson Says:

I think d smith n shaq barrett take extensions or cuts, together they cover over 30+ million of our cap. Jpp fell off the earth last season. Id rather have suh who made plays by himself at times n hustled on every play. 93 was always in the play or near the ball

  13. Stanglassman Says:

Godwin won’t be a cap casualty that’s just silly. But I would expect him to be signing a cap friendly long term deal really soon.

19 million for 8 games is pretty insane. I had no idea he was going to miss that much time. I wouldn’t think it would be that long. Is that what every thinks?? Half the season?

  14. HC Grover Says:

    AS may come crawling back.

  15. Ash Says:

What happen to all the people who said Brady and arians didn’t get along and the bucs couldn’t roster a competitive team? Lol

  16. gotbbucs Says:

In two years they haven’t been able to hammer out a contract with Godwin. Gage is insurance in case they never do get that contract done and Godwin walks next offseason.

  17. Gettinthebucs Says:

Very nice addition. Let’s hope Licht can add 2 or 3 more impact players in the draft!

  18. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I’ve read it’s an 8 month recovery. He could be back at the beginning of the season.

  19. firethecannons Says:

Love taking the player from a division rival also, seems like a great player who excells at contested catches and getting behind the defense. Go Bucs!!! Running back in the draft! and sign Gronk!

  20. Tom Sumner Says:

    AB=DIK HEAD..

  21. bucschamp Says:

if AB wasn’t a di** bucs can pay him the same money

  22. The southest Buc Says:

I´d put the money on whitehead over Gage… we can Make up de wrs corps, not so much our DBs or the Defense

  23. steele Says:

Johnson/Grayson/Miller. Cyril has a lot of upside. Scotty needs to improve off of a bad season and injury. Johnson, disappointing.

  24. Allen Lofton Says:

Let’s hope AB goes to the Saints – they belong together.

  25. Hodad Says:

Seems the draft has to be about defense.

  26. Colin in Canada Says:

Hopefully we have cash for Lenny and Gronk. I’d like to keep Brate if we can. He’s a Buc for life in my opinion.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Thank you JL. You know what you’re doing. We have lots of Pasco County geniuses around here ( 2nd grade takes 4 years there). They would love to have your job for 30 seconds or less.

  28. Keith Says:

    Let’s not jump the gun.
No RB is a HUUUGE PROBLEM!
    Not to mention Dline issues.
Salary cap is blown out, kinda like Justin P’s booty hole in prison.

  29. Beej Says:

“I think d smith n shaq barrett take extensions or cuts, together they cover over 30+ million of our cap. Jpp fell off the earth last season. Id rather have suh who made plays by himself at times n hustled on every play. 93 was always in the play or near the ball”

D Smith makes middle of the pack for left tackle. Wirfs has to be thinking about this, as left tackles make a LOT more than right tackles

  30. Oneilbuc Says:

I have to give credit to JL he’s finally doing a good job !! I love the Mason pick at guard great signing even for the future!!

  31. steele Says:

As much as I love the moves on offense, this team needs bigtime UPGRADES on D line. Glaring issue. I wouldn’t mind seeing pass rush addressed early in the draft AND free agency, which is full of good edge veterans, but money has to be freed up

  32. cmurda Says:

LOL @ Goatfarmer. Ain’t that the truth

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

“Finally doing a good job” is JL?

Three years ago the only thing between the Bucs and the playoffs was a boob at QB who leads the league in INTs and turnovers since 2015 and still doesn’t have a job. Lovie Smith drafted him. Tanked for him.

Two years ago he attracts TB12 and a SB55 win ensues.

Last year 14 wins through mega injuries, and an idiotic defensive call svehem over the last 30 seconds doomed us from beating the eventual SB champs.

This year he’s “finally” doing a good job?

Nice one there, Pats fan. You people from New England are hilarious.

  34. cover deuce Says:

Lol first half of the season for Godwin in what universe?

  35. August 1976 Buc Says:

Honey Badger is available, bring him in. The Bucs can just print some more money

    GO BUCS

  36. BucsFan81 Says:

They must be drafting all defense. Even so this defense was a liability last year and it looks like it’s going to again this year. We need some pass rushers. Wish we would have kept Whitehead. We are going to miss how physical he is.

  37. Casual Observer Says:

Money management. This cap stuff is hard for me to understand. I wonder if Joe is right and several Bucs will be leaving tomorrow. Sad, but the facts of life.

  38. Adrnagy Says:

Everything is now or never. Everything goes with brady approval.

  39. cmurda Says:

I’m liking the Goatfarmer. Cropdusting on some of the more ridiculous posts on here.

Licht finally doing his job? GTFOH.

This is the 2019 draft. Just the 2019 draft because nothing more need be said. When you hit on 5 out of 7 and arguably 6 out of 7 picks, that’s frigging Hall of Fame worthy. Jason Licht and the front office, most notably, our cap extraordinaire are phenomenal. So thankful to have them. Without further ado look down and run that Licht finally did his job nonsense by me one more time.

First-round pick (No. 5 overall): LB Devin White

Second-round pick (No. 39 overall): CB Sean Murphy-Bunting

Third-round pick (No. 94 overall): CB Jamel Dean

Third-round pick (No. 99 overall): S Mike Edwards

Fourth-round pick (No. 107 overall): OLB Anthony Nelson

Fifth-round pick (No. 145 overall): K Matt Gay

Sixth-round pick (No. 208 overall): WR Scotty Miller

Seventh-round pick (No. 215 overall): DL Terry Beckner Jr.

Only 5th rd Matt Gay who, as it turns out, just needed a little bit more time and 7th round pick Beckner are no longer with the team. One of the best drafts in the history of drafts East of Russia.

  40. Tye Says:

still need a monster in the back field to make the offense flow smooth…
Its a big reason the Packers get so far and fail.. Lack of a running threat!

  41. Noles Says:

Who Cares Bc AB WILL ALWAYS B AB

    WHICH AINT’t right I’m sorry

Don’t miss him but wish him well

  42. Francisco Guzman Says:

I want Gronk and JPP back.

  43. JGhotier Says:

Remember not long ago when Jason prioritized DB, Pass Rusher, OL and QB as the most important positions. Seems to me he left WR off of that list, considering we are paying our top 3 receivers more than any other position group on the team. Clearly we prioritize WR as being one of the most important positions or we wouldn’t be spending almost $20/mil per season for both Mike and Chris….and then another $10/mil per for our WR #3. Love the move, but I’m pretty sure we are spending more on 3 WR’s than our entire 5 would-be starting Offehsive Line. Jus’ sayin’

  44. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Lenny & Gronk & the offense is set. Work on defense in draft.

  45. Francisco Guzman Says:

I would bring JPP back. You need some veterans upfront at least.

  46. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Agreed, Thomas.

    GRONK.
    LENNY.

  47. adam from ny Says:

this signing leaves a little bit to ponder at 30 mil…

but it is obviously TB12 approved…

and i have often thought when we play the falcons and watch this guy play…

    “dam this fuggin” guy!”

he was always pretty effective against the bucs…

tom will certainly make him look even better out there so we’ve got our number 3…

forget AB, yeah he all mad and shiiiiii……..

but perriman is really like an odd man looking in right about now

also i think chark would have looked nice paired with brady as well

  48. adam from ny Says:

    another thing…

i think he was the #2 behind ridley last season initially???

and he was the #3 the couple years back, with julio jones and ridley as the number 1 and 2 receivers…

i think his most natural, thriving spot is the #3 receiver…

he’s like a perfect extra terror in that spot when you have a killer number 1 and 2 combo — and we have just that

  49. Rod Munch Says:

I like Gage, but that’s crazy money for him — hopefully he’s worth it, but $10m for a #3 WR seems like a lot. He will have to start at the beginning of the year so I think we’ll find out quickly if he was worth that kind of money or not.

  50. J Dubb Says:

3 years. Did Licht get a hint through the negotiation process that maybe this was gonna be Godwin’s last year here so he went and scooped up his replacement. Would not surprise me.

  51. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Cmurda

DWhite45 needs to show something this year.

  52. PassingThru Says:

It’s free agency. You pay a premium on youth and look for discounts on wealthy vets chasing a ring.
