Chris Godwin Thinks He Could Have Helped Bucs Advance In The Playoffs

Chris Godwin

Bucs fans will forever wonder, what if?

What if the Bucs didn’t have so many injuries in last season’s playoffs, especially to two of their offensive stars like All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs and Pro Bowl wide receiver Chris Godwin?

The Bucs were awful in every respect in the first half against the Rams, impotent on defense and on offense. Then Tom Brady put the offense, loaded with backups, on his 44-year-old back and damn near completed a comeback win for the ages after trailing the Rams 27-3.

Only a complete and total breakdown by the defense allowed Los Angeles to win in the final seconds.

Godwin, who had become Brady’s favorite target before blowing his knee out in December, watched upstairs in a booth reserved for Bucs players on injured reserve and suffered through the entire game, especially how it ended.

And Godwin feels your pain, Bucs fans, as he is still aggravated by that loss.

“(Sigh) It was incredibly tough,” Godwin said today of watching that game and not being able to play. “It was such a weird feeling to watch the games, especially from the IR booth.

“The way that things ended, I couldn’t help but feel that I could have had an impact and helped change the outcome.”

It’s hard for Joe to argue with what Godwin said. The Bucs’ offense was so putrid in the first half, you cannot tell Joe that Godwin wouldn’t have been able to help open things up. Really, like Godwin starting could have been worth at least an additional field goal.

This will live on in Bucs fandom for many, many decades. Sort of like what would have happened if Doug Williams hadn’t gotten hurt in the 1979 NFC Championship game?

Winning another Super Bowl this fall will go a long way toward easing Bucs fans’ pain.

    Thank you Captain OBVIOUS!!!!

  2. Anonymous Says:

Everybody knows that if Godwin or wirfs was playing or AB hadn’t have a meltdown we would have won another SB. That’s why TB is back, after everything settled down, he put his head into thought and saw how close he was for his 8th. That’s too temptive for him to not come back.

  3. ModHairKen Says:

Oh there is no debate. That game started out so ugly, and had they had Wirfs and Godwin, they would have won. They would have won another Super Bowl.

How much has to go perfectly to win one? That’s what makes 2020-21 so special.

Next year is going to be a blast. This team is on a Mission from Tom.

  4. '79 Defense Says:

Incredible as long suffering Bucs fans that we now are led to wonder “Damn, if Wirfs and Godwin were healthy for the playoffs, we’d be looking at winning our third Super Bowl IN A ROW this season.” –assuming Brady wouldn’t have retired for good after winning two in a row.

Dirty Aints targeting killed our chances at a repeat, well that and Todd Bowles

Not having Wirfs was the big one

  8. #8 Says:

Reggie White in his prime would have helped the Bucs D be better last year.

Saints and their surreptitious bounty program are a **** stain on the NFL

Bowles was gambling. Not a terrible wager but he lost.
If Godwin was in that game it would have made the difference.
It would not have been that close at the end.

There is no way to know what would’ve happened if we didn’t pile on injuries last year. We can mumble and grumble all we want but the Rams got the Lombardi. Anything else is a guess.

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Well no s— he would have helped. After Arian’s outburst in New York where he cut Brady’s favorite target mid-game, the Bucs needed all the help they could get. Having Godwin would have been huge. Hopefully once he’s back he can actually stay healthy.

  13. DEEEMO Says:

Ya’All need to stop slamming Todd Bowels…A year ago his defense shut down the Chiefs without a touchdown to win the Super Bowl. The thing that cost the Bucs in 2021 was the many injuries to both sides of the ball and AB’S melt down in New York. If I remember after the Chiefs game Ya’All were calling him a Defensive Mastermind and saying after BA retires he would be 1st in line to be the new head coach!

  14. Rod Munch Says:

    Falcons just signed Mariota… LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean maybe he’s supposed to be a backup, I’m not sure, but if they’re signing him to start, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOO!!!!!!!!!!!

First off the guy will get injured within 5 starts, second off, he stinks.

  15. JGhotier Says:

I’m in the minority and think this lives on decades for as a positive and not a negative. We could’ve folded. We could’ve gave up. Literally nothing going right (sans an Akers fumble forced by AWJ right before halftime). It was a monumental comeback and show of heart, will, determination, will, fortitude and resilience. Yes, the one bad call and play was the deep completion to Cooper Kupp….but LITERALLY everything else was miraculous it just short of. I saw that comeback as a positive for a Franchise for decades and not the adverse or ONE play.

  16. BucfaninMi Says:

    Definitely

  17. Brent Clark Says:

Godwin + Wirfs = SUPERBOWL that’s why we did not make it there, now this years if all goes well, and no injuries, we’ll definitely will have Playoff spot representing NFC South…. TB12 must of had a crystal ball to see what his non competition in the division was going to be, as did Sean Payton lol!

  18. adam from ny Says:

falcons are waving the white flag…

    they gave up

  19. Miller5252 Says:

That game was still dirty from the Saints. That whole game they were hitting very low on players and they were lucky Godwin was the only injured Buc. Too bad Godwin got hurt, the offense still would have been really good had it not happened.

  20. SaintsFan59 Says:

Listen to you whining Clowns: poor Bucs players getting hit too hard by the Saints. You dumb asses seem to forget y’all knocked our QB out for the entire season with a completely irresponsible and reckless hit. So save it for your mommas, maybe they will wipe your tears and kiss your asses.

  21. DungyDance Says:

Hey SaintsFan – help us out again as keep forgetting things around here. How many games did Sean Payton coach during 2012?

  22. ModHairKen Says:

    SaintsFan59, you hurt?

  23. Eddie Marz Says:

Tampa was down four receivers that Rams game. Godwin Brown Perriman and Gyayson. Then Wirfs get hurt. They were very close to repeating. Could have used that by week, maybe this year they get it. GOBUCS!

  24. firethecannons Says:

Rod Munch’s last post accurate! Mariota will be down for the count by the 3rd game, my guess is they get Jimmy G to go along with Mariota and the two play a tag team quarterback but they need more QB”s as the two are both extremely injury prone.

  25. BUC CHEEKS Says:

    A DERRR! CG is BEAST

  26. mark2001 Says:

What a probing question. I really wonder how many wouldn’t think he probably would have put us over the top in the Rams game? I’d bet it would be a small number of fans.
