Carlton Davis Issues Interesting Instagram Message

March 6th, 2022

Bucs CB Carlton Davis.

Well, this is sure one way to liven up an otherwise boring non-football Sunday afternoon.

NFL players love to issue cryptic messages on social media. It’s almost a game for them. But given the timing (the end of the combine) and how agents often get the basic framework of future contracts and/or trades working at the combine, this one today from Carlton Davis greatly interests Joe.

Keep in mind the free agency dinner bell rings a week from Wednesday. And Davis, the Bucs’ best corner, is a free agent.

Davis, on his Instagram stories feed, posted a picture of himself playing in those hideous, eyerake-Jameis Winston uniforms, with the message, “ImLeavingWithABankrollIfThisWorkRight.”

Now Joe has no idea if this is a verse in some song or if Davis is sitting at a poker table at Aria in Las Vegas holding a straight flush referring to what he might do next.

Given the timing and that he posted a photo of himself wearing his Bucs uniform, Joe has to wonder if his agent found a suitor willing to cough up more cash than Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

You may reach your own conclusions.

Get paid CD hard to give a number 2 corner 17 mil

    It’s a a Babyface Ray lyric.

My cryptic message to Carlton if someone was dumb enough to overpay for him is good riddance and good for you.

  5. DaBux Says:

    Ummm, bye.

  6. SKBucsFan Says:

Someone will pay him. I’m not sure we want a guy that seems to only be in it for the money.

  7. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Get away from bruce absent as fast as you can.

  8. Scotty In Fat Antonio Says:

Yet another player with GREAT English skills!

  9. Maddognavy Says:

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s business, no hard feelings….but Carlton, don’t rub it in!!!

  11. Rotten Amiigo94 Says:

I’m not paying top tier money for a CB who can’t play a whole season without injury. Get a pass rush and draft a young kid or pick up an affordable quality CB. The secondary is great when there’s a pass rush to not expose them.

  12. cmurda Says:

He’s earned his money. Some of you wouldn’t know the value of a good cornerback if Deion Sanders was in his prime right in front of your eyes. This ain’t running back. They don’t grow on trees. You will probably see that what CD gets won’t be insane. I understand if Licht just can’t spread out enough cash but CD is far more a priority for me than the majority here.

  13. Ash Says:

@cmurda feel the same as you I think people are really undervaluing cd’s level of importance and how good he is. It is extremely hard to find a good cornerback so if you find one you do everything you can to keep him.

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Lol can’t pay 17 mil for him especially knowing our corners are only as good as the pass rush. Go get ya money dude but if it came down to Davis or Godwin see ya. It would be easier to replace him having two corners already in house

  15. Bucs&Bolts Says:

    See ya ✌🏽

  16. HC Grover Says:

FA’s are flying the BA Coop. REBUILD year.

  17. fern Says:

    He can go
CB this year has a lot of depth and free agents

  18. Christos Says:

@cmurda, @Ash i agree. I think many of the fans will understand the value of Carlton Davis if he is not on the team. Davis is a good corner and we struggling for good corner play for many years. Hope he stays. Reminds me a few years back when many Bucs fans here wanted and suggested the team to trade Mike Evans for draft picks so we can rebuild (was shaking my head in disbelief). You have to keep your good players, as many as you can.

  19. lambchop Says:

If JL is willing to let him go, you can bet he’s working on getting a replacement in FA too. There’s not enough cash for everyone. Whoever our QB is, he needs to be protected, so Godwin, Jensen, and/or Cappa are priorities with Ali’s retirement.

CD is a great CB, so it would be a tough loss. Let’s just see how things play out.

Let’s not pretend that every player doesn’t play for that 2nd and 3rd contract. A guy like CD is young, so he wants that security. Vets like JPP and Suh are at the point where they can negotiate on their salary and give a hometown discount. Everyone here who’s dissin him for goin for the money, would do the same in his situation. You’d have to be foolish not to.

  20. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Perhaps he can put some of that money toward learning to speak the English language.

  21. Buczilla Says:

I know there are a few folks who want to keep Carlton, but I can’t see giving big money to a player that has proven to be incapable of playing an entire season. We won’t be losing an Aqib Talib like talent if this guy bolts either. He’s a good not great corner when healthy. If Licht wasn’t fairly horrible at drafting corners I wouldn’t even remotely sweat losing Carlton.

  22. McDuffie Says:

Dude you’re really Not that good. See ya later.com….

  23. McDuffie Says:

Dude you’re really Not that good. See ya later bye.

  24. TBD Says:

    K. Bye.

  25. Bucamania Says:

    If only he could catch.

  26. ModHairKen Says:

    Next. Bye.

And for the guy who keeps running down Arians with the wanna be Joe nickname, calls himself Proud, go cheer for the Saints or Packers, son. You’ll be happier.

  27. SKBucsFan Says:

This is the hardest position to play. It’s hard to cover Wide Receivers for more than a few seconds effectively. Spend the money on building up the front 7 then the CB job becomes easier. If it comes down to spending money in the backfield then a safety makes more sense. Whitehead is a higher priority than Davis

  28. Itsgoodtobetheking Says:

He’s not going anywhere if the Bucs dont want him to.

  29. westernbuc Says:

I agree Buczilla, if JL wasn’t so bad at drafting corners I’d say move on. But he should be a priority

  30. davenport Says:

There is always stupid money out there … someone will pay this 2nde tier, often injured XCB far more than he’s worth

  31. DBS Says:

So long . You’re nothing special.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Reading these comments Buc fans dont seem to realize what they got in Carlton. Yeah he is a shutdown corner. Stats back it up, just look at what #1 recievers do against him…….Corners like him are rare to find and some of yall are saying to replace him with a draft choice? Wow you must be smashed in the head and nog of paod attention the past 5 years(or os it 10, 15?)…… Where we have been drafting corner after corner only to watch them struggle.

Seriously does anybody remember Julio Jones and what he used to do to our secobdary? Carlton put an end to that and yall are begging to go back to that.

Our saving grace is that Todd the Godd has done wonders finding DBs so if we do move on he knows what hes doing……….So if we do move on and do well replacing Carlton remember thats only gonna hsppen because of Bowles……….Who im sure you people hate as well. Yall dont know whats good for you.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

    Typos**

  34. JimmyJack Says:

And maybe Licht arent bad at drating corners. Maybe he arent never had a coach who could develope them. Track records back up this theory.

  35. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Cornerback play was atrocious this year. Every single one of them missed games. Even when all the starters played together they weren’t exceptional.. Backup Qb’s looked like all pro’s.

I wish we could keep him. We certainly shouldn’t overpay. Our, 3rd, 4th, 5th string guys probably played a similar number of snaps.

  36. Mikadeemas Says:

How’d he get the ball!? Go BUCS!!

  37. Craig Says:

At the end of last season he came back and tried to help the team, though he was not fully healed.

Look at those last games and you can see him stumble, and you can see the hitch in his step.

He is not in it only for the money. He puts his body on the line and should be paid for it. He is the second best DB we have, if you count Mike Edwards as a DB. He is more durable than Edwards, or the heat seeking missile that is Jordan Whitehead.

Franchise his at 17 and work out a three year deal for slightly less, see if he will stay.

  38. William Walls Says:

The best indicator of Carlton Davis’ worth is what happened to our pass defense whenever he couldn’t be on the field. I know for sure I dont want to see a replay of that.

  39. steele Says:

He can go. Replace with JC Jackson, Steph Gilmore, etc. Draft Andrew Booth or some other.

I’ll never get over Cooper Kupp putting these guys on skates.

  40. Beejezus-belt Says:

Bye. You can be an overpaid average CB somewhere else. Congrats on the bankroll. I’m sure it won’t be a bad payday for a guy who misses a almost a quarter season every year.

  41. Greg Says:

He’s good but the injury thing is a problem. The best ability is availability.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He could be outstanding for a team that doesn’t stop the run……It’s a tough job being a Buc DB…..but somebody has to do it……somebody else.

  43. DieHard Buc's Fan Says:

If we can afford him the Buc’s will bring him back. It’s a no-brainer. They’ve got to ensure they rebuild the trenches first though. If we can’t rush the passer that can make good cornerbacks look like crap. Hopefully, something can be worked out but if he leaves to get paid top dollar I see nothing wrong with that. Players in the NFL really take a beating out there for which many pay a price for the rest of their life.

  44. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Hey CD. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Bye Bye.

    ……………….

Funny. Not sure if you watch football or not but Cooper Kupp puts EVERYone on skates. Ya know, kinda like how he pulled off the triple crown of Wide Receiving????
    Derp.

  46. adam from ny Says:

    he played himself…

the last decent photo of him actually being a ball hawk is in the old alarm clock jerseys…thats years ago…

proof in the pudding he’s not doing too much…lol

  47. Atlbuc28 Says:

After watching the train of solid dbs at the combine…… Get your money Bubba!. We need Jenson and Godwin more! Enjoy the payday!!

  48. Defense Rules Says:

Wow, some JBFers can be downright cruel. Carlton’s problem isn’t that he’s not a very good CB; he is. His problem has been availability more than anything else, and like it or not, that’s a big part of what teams pay for. The guys who make the big bucks, at any position, are those who can stay on the field, AND produce while they’re out there.

Bucs have played 65 regular season games PLUS 6 post-season games while he’s been here. He’s played in 51 of our regular season games (78.5%) but in all 6 of our playoff games (100%). That’s an overall availability, in a 4-year period, of 80.2%. That’s not that great.

On the field his average completion allowed percentage, over 4 years, has been 57.1%. Personally consider that to be very good, but not great. He’s allowed 20 TDs in his 51 regular season games, but none in his 6 playoff games. His 6 INTs in the 57 total games he’s played in is OK, but again not great. Mike Edwards for instance has only played in 45 regular season games plus 6 playoff games, and has 7 INTs in a LOT fewer def snaps.

For the right price though, I’d love to see us keep Davis, but I think that the Bucs can get a starter-capable CB for around $10 mil. AND if we draft a CB in the 1st Rnd, we’d get him for 5 years, and he would probably also be capable of starting for us. Hopefully we can fill our NEED for a lot less than the almost $20 mil Carlton believes he’s worth.

  49. adam from ny Says:

i think he goes to philly or baltimore for about 4 years 65 mil

  50. sasquatch Says:

If you’re the kind of guy who plays this shyte through twitter, go eff yourself, and leave. We don’t need tweeter-b1tches on this team.

  51. Beeej Says:

I view him as a B/B+ corner, good guy to have, but not at Jalen Ramsey money

  52. Cleanhouse Says:

    Get lost

  53. ClwJB Says:

He is top 15 level, not top 5

Do not overpay him, 12-13 per max

Buyer beware the injury history and lack of top end speed

Not elite. but pretty good – hard to decide if you can’t just replace him with a 2nd round pick at 1/8th the cost

  54. David Says:

I don’t understand the people who are saying good riddance. Just pure football ignorance I guess. He is definitely a top 10 cornerback, doesn’t have the hands to get the INTs but that defense changes drastically when he is off the field. They can do a lot more when he is on the field because he is that good. It changes how the rest of the secondary plays and helps the pass rush.

Because of all that, I hope they’re able to retain him but given the cap situation it seems unlikely

  55. Biff Barker Says:

We fans can just ruminate over this for now, bur real soon we will know how Bowles and Licht think.
It’s not personal Sonny, Its just business.

  56. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Without a good QB, no one wants to take the hometown discount as they will be cut early or traded and blamed for a losing offence when they play defence. See Jets Jags Detroit Houston Carolina and Browns, and other teams with no QBs it’s makes everyone make less as they are considered bad when it’s just the coach or QB play.

  57. Tony Says:

Maybe he can stop taking some dumb penalties at times if he goes somewhere else. Maybe they can help him with that. I wasn’t much of a fan when him & Dean were coming out. Plenty of decent CBs gonna be around. JC Jackson will be one. Stephon Gilmore will be one. Or maybe we just bring back Ronde because I’m sure he’d have a chance to start even now.

  58. New England Patriots Fan Says:

High tide raises all ships, Toms two years in Tampa rehabilitated a retired beat up Gronk into a high demand FA TE, he almost rejuvenated ABs career and he still may play in Baltimore, he assisted a labelled “bad locker room guy” Fournette to becoming a the top RB hybrid back FA, he basically got an entire Oline recognized to be labelled all pros and those FA on it will now all be paid accordingly. He turned a great WR2 Chris into the No2 FA in 2022 as atop WR1 while injured requesting 20m/y. Jensen is now receiving top money for working with Tom as a FA.

He helped a defence get noticed so Whitehead and Davis will get paid to.

These same players while amazingly talented if they came to Tampa with Jemies or a comparable QB none would be getting paid in their FA and some may not be in the NFL in 2022.
Their growth is firstly on themselves and their God given talent but having that super star QB raised all ships and those players need to capitalize abs get paid before the tide recedes and some get bottomed out on the shoreline.

  59. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I see both sides. I don’t think Davis is a top 15 corner, but he’s solid. I don’t think we have the cap room to keep him above 12 million. How do the compensatory picks work? If he leaves signs a big contract, what do we get in return?

  60. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Tough choice….Carlton Davis for $17 million or a “Bottle of Cologne” for $17…..

  61. Delson Says:

He is a good man coverage not great but good. Hes shown growth in the 3 zone coverage. I also think arians held off our best plays until the end of the season and into the playoffs. Why? Cuz u dont give our opponents tape to study until its late n he knew we’d go deep into the playoffs. Unfortunately ab leaving and injuries to gronk n godwin threw off our offensive drives. Our defense showed up until that final rams drive where we left winfield alone with kupp which was a huge mistake. Stafford aint afraid to throw deep n take hits if it means huge gains. We knew that but bowles messed us up on thos quick calls

  62. SOEbuc Says:

#33?????? Isn’t that a picture of FA Whitehead, who I will take all day over Davis if it came to it.

  63. Destinjohnny Says:

Good think we have drafted so many good corners to slot in

  64. steele Says:

Kupp is a problem for a lot of corners, SB. But look at the film. Davis was embarrassed. Badly. Whether physical, mental, or scheme, you have to do better than that.

  65. Traskin22 Says:

doesn’t matter who stays or goes every team changes every year keep a good core and draft strong plug some holes with free agents…. same thing every year for every team….

  66. tampabayallday Says:

Let him walk, I’d rather sign chandler Jones

  67. Northend Says:

Patrick P at damn near half CD money plus a 3rd round rookie.

    CD good, not Elite.

    Not irreplaceable .

    Reload not rebuild

  68. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Keep your helmet on CD for your next team. Good luck and thanks for your service.

  69. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

There you go Scottie in wherever you’re at! Does that make you feel superior to him by pointing that out??? It was a cryptic message so he ran it all together. Oh my he missed an S at the end of work. Why can’t you people get over yourselves and accept that certain people choose not to use English properly???
