Cleveland Eyeing Chris Godwin

March 6th, 2022

Behind TheAthletic.com paywall lives a credible story about the Browns having interest in Pro Bowl Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin, among other receivers as Cleveland looks to overhaul its struggling receiving corps.

Bucs fans now sit eight short days from Cleveland being able to present an offer to Godwin’s handlers.

The siren blows on free agency at noon on March 14. Joe’s hoping it’s not a Buccaneers’ version of Black Monday.

Cleveland needs to find a QB before they try to steal Godwin…

If Godwin leaves Tampa for Cleveland he is insane.

  2. Bucfan1988 Says:

No worries Bucs fans, Chris Godwin ain’t going nowhere 🤷🏻‍♂️!!!

Worst case scenario, we Franchise tag him again…

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Any team that needs a number one receiver who can block, and go across the middle will be after Chris Godwin.
Do not forget about Jacksonville, who has plenty of money.
Think about it, if you were Chris Godwin, what would you do ?
Brady is gone, and we have already lost Ali Marpet.
We are sure to lose more players, including Jensen.
Hell, we don’t even have a proven QB!
If you were Chris Godwin, what would you do ?
IMHO, a players career is short, so you have to make the money while you can.

  5. sasquatch Says:

I believe the Bucs will complete a deal with him before the bell for free agency.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

The Bucs can’t afford to franchise tag anyone this year.

It’s interesting – not a single NFL team has used the franchise tag yet this off season with only two days left…

  7. Listnfrmafar Says:

    Shat hole. No way!

  8. A real bucs fan Says:

    Chris with apple roof cleaning,
Godwin isn’t going anywhere.. all your posts are starting to be the same..
If you have already givin up on the bucs then stop posting..when the bucs win you are the first to say I told you so.

Godwin will get the franchise tag if a contract can’t be worked out.
I have never seen so much doom and gloom from our fan base.
Let’s see what the bucs do in free agency and the draft before everyone jumps from the ship.

  9. Beeej Says:

TAKE you stinking paws off our Godwin you d**n dirty yankees!

  10. ElioT Says:

What team wouldn’t have interest in Godwin?

Why would Godwin want to play for the Browns and pay state income tax?

    Stupid “news”

  11. Beeej Says:

I work all over the country, and Ohio has the fattest women of any state…frikkin corn fed

  12. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Chris Godwin was the No2 ranked FA behind Adams a player they won’t let leave GB.

This is a league where a trio of Jamarr Chase Burrow and a Mixon, were enough to be 1m from winning a SB.

This is a league where when Woods/Odell got hurt Stafford could barely move the ball without Kupp and the refs.

This is a league where when AB and Chris were hurt, the greatest of all time started to not look as great with backups and Evans.

This is a league for 3 years where Mahomes Kelce and Hill are in the SB or a AFC championship off a trio of weapons and a bad d.

Weapons and QBs are everything in the NFL now.

  13. Keith Says:

Headed back to the days of The Sucs and another 20 year chokefest!

  14. Ash Says:

I highly doubt cg is going anywhere they won’t want to because I think they want to use the tag on Davis but if worst comes to worse I don’t think they hesitate on tagging Godwin if they have to buy more time to work out a long term deal.

  15. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Let all free agents walk. Collect all the compensatory picks that they can get for the obvious rebuild. Give the next regime all the ammo they can get to fix the mess that bruce absent has created.

  16. adam from ny Says:

    cleveland…not far from PA

  17. Buczilla Says:

If Cleveland is willing to give an injury prone mid tier number one wide receiver 20 or more million per year, they’re welcome to him. Otherwise, I’d love to have Chris back for under 20.

  18. Letsbuccinggo Says:

The bucs should have locked him up last year. The tag is going to cost them 19 mil this year. If he doesn’t sign a contract a tag would cost them 23 mil next year.

  19. adam from ny Says:

what to expect from godwin next year post surgery:

a lot less of what godwin is known for…

he is going to take is a bit lighter as a banger, running over or into people, and in the yac department…

you will see a godwi that’s a little more like a mike evans… dropping down after a catch and satisfied with the yards…

he is going to have to protect that knee a bit, and keep it in mind regarding his surroundings on every play…

and understandably so…by 2023 the knee should hopefully be that of the “6 million dollar man” (lee majors)…

until then, if we do resign him, he is going to have to go a little lighter in the area he thrives…taking hits and yac…

also if we unload brady to sf, for say a first rounder, we gotta get kittle in the deal…it’s a must…they’ll get gronk because he and brady are attached at the hip…we need a tight end…and now y’all gotta realize we need a beastly yac type guy…

kittle possesses those beastly “i’ll run over you type yac skills” for a tight end

so we gotta get kittle if brady is off to sf…we need a tight end – and we need a guy to do some of what chris godwin will be doing less of in 2022…

    think about it…

Thank goodness they are eyeing him instead of “sniffing” him…..we don’t need any more sniffing, poking, prodding, r1mming our FAs.

  22. HC Grover Says:

Setting up for 23 with new coaches and players. This is Buccos last tour year. We will struggle through 22 then total rebuild in 23. Remember…
Winning isn’t everything, it is playing the game. Here comes the Bucconeers!

  23. Proud Bucs Fan Says:

Don’t worry buc fans, with bruce absent asleep at the wheel, what could go wrong?

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs will make a go of keeping Chris But……If I were him, I’d follow the money. He’s already got a Superbowl under his belt. Make that paper while you can. Anything can happen to your health in this league and nobody really..trully cares. Its..next Gladiator up. Make that paper Chris.

  25. adrnagy Says:

Last year franchise tag $16m. This year $19m. Due to the question marks around godwin knee 90% he his tag. Imo

  26. Beeej Says:

If we offer 4-5 years at $16-17, would he leave for same years at $18-19? That’s the choice Shaq made last year

  27. Buc1987 Says:

Proud Bucs Fan….Arians doesn’t sign players Jason Licht does.

Don’t expect you to know how things work anyways

  28. adam from ny Says:

so let me get this straight…

chris is off to cleveland to be best buds with machine gun kelly and make rap songs like AB ?

  29. WalkdaPlank Says:

Of all the places Chris Godwin could go, I’m least worried about him going to Cleveland. That franchise actually makes the Lost Decade look not so bad. Most players and coaches there are not good and if they are good when they show up they do not leave the same. I think Joe Thomas and more recently OBJ are some of the few to ensure/recover from that franchise. Look at what they are doing to poor Nick Chubb, one of the best RB’s in the league and he hardly ever gets the ball in the red zone.

Not a snowball’s chance in hell Godwin signs there.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … Franchise tagging Godwin makes zero sense like you said. Not only because of the ridiculous cost, but also because we have ZERO idea when he’ll be ready, how many games he’ll be able to give us this year, AND how effective he’ll be upon his return. It’s a monstrous GAMBLE at this point, and franchise-tagging him would mean we’d have to eat that WHOLE ENCHILADA in one sitting (in 2022). Can’t slide the franchise tag to future years.

The franchise tag cost of a WR this year is $19.1 mil, BUT … Chris is on his SECOND franchise tag. In that case, his cost would be 120% of the 2021 cost. Chris made $16 mil last year, so his new cost would be $19.2 mil if we franchise tagged him again. It’d probably tick him off, we may only get a part season out of him, AND we’d have to go through the whole thing again next season. Dumber than dirt IMO.

Players don’t typically like the franchise tag (don’t blame them), and neither do I. Just means some lousy (and lazy) negotiating has gone on.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we are forced to franchise Godwin, or any player for that matter, it means they are refusing to sign at whatever deal is being offered.
With Brady gone along our reasonable hopes of a SB, it makes sense to sign player who want to be here….no franchise for Godwin. He accepts a long term deal or tests the market….just business.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I’m not worried.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

I don’t know if I agree with your reasoning. It’s all part of the business. His agent will do whatever it takes to get him the most money possible. That doesn’t mean Godwin does not want to be here. That’s a big leap. It means he’s trusting his agent.

I’m sure Godwin wants to stay. He’s got a good partner in Evans…but he also wants to do what’s best for his family.

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Proud Bucs Fan Says
“Don’t worry buc fans, with bruce absent asleep at the wheel, what could go wrong?”

Is that supposed to upset us? If so, it’s a massive fail. You must be a Falcon’s fan…they talk horrible smack.

  35. catcard202 Says:

Without ready behind pay wall article…I’d put Amari Cooper on the top of the potential FA WR market for CLEV…To me, he makes a ton of sense for kind of WR CLEV needs pair w/ Baker & that Browns running game – to take the next step in 2022.

If the top 3 potential WR targets for CLEV = D.Adams / Godwin / Cooper…Adams is automatically out – as he will get tagged by GB, at min – as GB tries to keep ARod in GB.

Godwin – if he makes the market/ does not resign before FA (No 2nd TAG @ $20M+)…CG will have more suitors & command more long-term $$ than Cooper.

Meaning, CLEV could/probably should just pull a Rams maneuver & trade for Cooper before Boys cut him. Ship a pick, take on the 3yrs-$60M left on his deal & don’t look back…He’s proven WR commodity in the league & not a 50-50 proposition the pick would be.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

    Worse case you franchise him.

  37. HC Grover Says:

The theme song of the 22 Bucconeers ‘Gone with the wind’.

  38. Craig Says:

We will soon see what the players think of Trask. Make an offer for Godwin and see which way he runs.

Others have gone to Cleveland because they can see that Burrow is the real thing. That might be the deciding factor and might be a big mistake by Arians.

Not letting anything be known of Trask, might burn him.

  39. steele Says:

    Everybody is eyeing everybody.

  40. JeffreyLane77 Says:

I hate to say it. I think Godwin will follow the money. He will be a great asset for Cleveland. And it’s a great fit for him.

  41. ClwJB Says:

    Sign him with no worries

ME13 will be redoing his deal for life and frees up what we need to make this happen

  42. David Says:

I’m not worried about Godwin. They will sign him. I’m worried about Davis and whitehead and the O line.

Still in shock over Marpet retiring

  43. TampabayDJ82 Says:

A real bucs fan – AGREE 💯 !! I don’t think most of these people have been Bucs fans, unless they are winning ! I don’t believe they made it through the “lost decade” .. The Bucs and their front office know what they are doing. Has anyone seen ANYONE ELSE sign a big contract yet ?? It’s the same thing every off-season. Last minute moves. Let’s all stop trying to think we are better than Litch and BA at this stuff.. Go Bucs

Proud Bucs Fan: Have you ever seen the movie “Tombstone”? If not, YouTube the clip of when Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday meet.

    Paraphrasing from the movie…
Ike: Kansas Law Dog, law don’t go around here! Savvy?
    Wyatt Earp: I’m retired.
Ike: That’s good, Kansas Law Dog, cuz law don’t go around here!
Wyatt Earp: Yeah, I heard you the first time.

Do you really have to b!tch about Arians every day?
