Bucco Bruce Arians’ Street Cred

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians

These are puzzling times for Bucs fans.

Why are the Bucs not bringing back Carlton Davis (seemingly)? Why does Playoff Lenny seem like he’s done with Tampa Bay? What kind of mind games are Tom Brady playing? Why didn’t the Bucs tag Ryan Jensen?

The easy answer is the salary cap. But then again, years ago Team Glazer crowed how they never let a player they wanted to keep escape in free agency.

Then there is this quarterback mess. Forgetting Brady for a moment, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians talking up Blaine Gabbert has the western world confused and bewildered. A sect of Bucs fans cannot comprehend how or why Arians doesn’t put all his eggs in Kyle Trask’s basket and have him lead the Bucs to a Vince Lombardi Trophy, fully ignoring Trask was so buried on the depth chart his rookie year last year that not only has Trask yet to wear a gameday jersey, he had to dig himself out of a mine each day to go to practice.

Joe may not see the wisdom in some of Arians’ recent moves or statements, but Joe trusts the man. In Joe’s eyes, Arians has built up massive street cred.

Think about it, Arians took over a team that was the NFC’s fire hydrant in a dog park in 2019. In his first year they were “this-close” to having a winning record. In his second year with the Bucs in a pandemic with a brand new quarterback, new tight end, new running back, rookie right tackle and a mental patient of a new wide receiver, Arians guided the Bucs to a Super Bowl win.

That isn’t the resume of a man who doesn’t know what he is doing.

Joe maintains Arians should be inducted into the Ring of Honor the moment he retires. He’s the best coach the Bucs have ever had and Joe will argue all night long about this (Chucky is No. 2).

So until Arians proves he’s lost touch with football reality, Joe’s going to trust that Arians has a plan for quarterback this fall.

It’s called “street cred.” And Arians has earned it.

  1. David Says:

    I agree completely.

They may be completely handcuffed because of salary cap but, barring that, we need to trust Jason Licht, BA, Todd Bowles, BL.

They built the greatest two year run in Buccaneer history and brought a Super Bowl. The coaching staff is stable and knows what to do. That’s a big head start

  2. Winny Testaverde Says:

I like BA…but I think he got a little too cocky much like Gruden after he won a Super Bowl. Both running off diva receivers who were valuable nonetheless. Arians is starting to sound like the “get off my lawn” guy as he approaches 70. I don’t think him and little brother Licht will recapture lightning in a bottle again. Of course landing Brady at 1/2 price market rate sure did help.

  3. Caleb Says:

I for one am skeptical. Arians has had a nice coaching career but he has always had elite level qb play. I am scared to see the Bucs try to rely on a Gabbert or Trask to win football games next year. They got mvp level qb play last year and the downgrade this year could be monumental. Also losing other talent to free agency. I hope I am wrong but I feel they might could be a 6 or 7 win team next year unless they solve the qb situation especially with the schedule they have.

  4. Buczilla Says:

I agree about Arians and he is easily the best coach that we have ever had. I’m looking at this year as a rebuilding year and I’m only going to lose my mind if Gabbert starts for the entire year. I’ll only lose half of my mind if we can’t either sign Chris to a long term deal or trade him.

  5. sasquatch Says:

I don’t understand the “fans” on here who hate Arians. It makes no sense. Most likely they’re people who are never satisfied and would b!tch about any coach.

  6. WalkdaPlank Says:

I like BA. Any Bucs fan that doesn’t like the guy that helped orchestrate a historic turnaround from the Lost Decade must have a personal vendetta against the man.

That being said the Brady Effect is undeniable. The Bucs don’t win the Super Bowl without Brady. The Bucs may have missed the playoffs this season without Brady. Nobody really knows how good BA and Leftwich would have been without the greatest QB to ever play the game. Well we are going to find out this season.

With THAT being said, I also believe the Bucs don’t win the Super Bowl (or land Brady) without BA.

  7. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Fournette posted a couple of photos on his Instagram page Tuesday, with a caption that sure sounds like his time in Tampa Bay is in the past tense

  8. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Why are all the star free agents not signing or seemingly wanting to sign when between Marpet, Brady and easy cap moves Tampa could easily bring back at least 3-4 stars if they aren’t paying 40m/y for a QB

  9. New England Patriots Fan Says:

On why some Fans have dislike of BA since end of season, it’s because they blame him for the handling of the end of 2021 and fighting with a crazy AB costing Tampa a SB run as WR1 and WR1b are second most important position in NFL.

They also hear the stories on how Tom mid 2020 change the entire offense to suit him and the team went undefeated won a SB and then continued to win till end of season when injuries and fighting internally cost the team SB run.

They noticed how Tom so uncharacteristically left so abubtly and oddly via IG when Tampa seemingly would be a contender this season.

They are angry Tampa didn’t sign or trade did a better QB while other teams resign or trade for good QBs

And they also hear the media stories daily from Tv/online on how Tom left because of creative differences and almost every talking head on TV says Tom wants to play just not under this system in Tampa.

They also see how seemingly some of the better in house FA don’t was to resign with the team and wonder why when Tampa is offering fair compensation.

They also see how some players seemingly went to dog house and didn’t start when they looked to more talented in 2021.

And they are scared the team will tank now and they can’t handle going to the pre 2020 era.

  10. OBVIOUS Says:

I agree with pretty much all that has been said concerning Arians and company and that includes Joe’s take as well as I think New England buttoned it up pretty nicely.
    Well said across the board.

Now If Only we has some Answers…..!

    GO BUCS!

  11. Bucsfan4ever Says:

Tony Dungee was better than Gruden.

  12. OBVIOUS Says:

Except for the Arians always had elite QBs.

    NOT TRUE….
Why do you think he has a reputation as a QB whisperer..

    GO BUCS!

  13. sasquatch Says:

    @NE Pats Fan-

So, basically, the Arians hate is based on nonsense.

    1. AB was treated more than fairly in Tampa and deserved the boot when he got it.

    2. All the allegations about Brady and Arians having a falling out are unsubstantiated.

    3. Only one QB trade scenario has happened… and that was outlandishly expensive. We shouldn’t be trying to copy what Denver did. We can’t afford to give up all those draft picks. There really aren’t any good QB trades out there for us to execute.

    4. If some players don’t want to re-sign in Tampa right now it’s because someone else is going to dump unreasonable money in their lap, and the Bucs are up against the cap much tighter this year.

    5. There is no evidence of guys not wanting to play for Arians.

  14. Bucs Guy Says:

It’s simple – follow the money.
Jensen is looking at what is probably his last opportunity for a big contact.
Davis III, Cappa and Whitehead were not 1st rd picks and they are looking for their first payout.
Fournette is trying to recover “lost” wages from his initial contract after playing 2 years on prove it contracts. RBs have short shelf life’s so it’s his only chance for a big contract.
Godwin is just screwing the Bucs because he’s not signing any long term contract until next year when the salary cap increases significantly from the new TV contract.

  15. Pruritus Ani Says:

    Haters wanna hate.

  16. ModHairKen Says:

“Tony Dungee was better than Gruden.”

Yeah, no. One won a Super Bowl in Tampa with a journeyman QB. The other got fired because he couldn’t and won only one SB with arguably the second best QB of the last 40 years.

    Study some history, guy.

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

The culture of this team changed when Bruce was hired. If you can’t tell the difference, you haven’t paid attention.

  18. 1#bucsfan Says:

In BA I trust. Him and Jason will get it done. Over the years Jason has done a nice job drafting and bringing in free agents. I expect the same thing this year. This is a fan base who has stuck with our Bucs thru the lost decade. After that us Buc fans can handle anything. Let’s goo bucs

  19. Hodad Says:

Without Brady this coaching staff will have to earn their pay check. Not just Brady, Marpet going is a big blow, leaders like JPP, and Suh won’t be back. We’ll know what kind of coach BA is real soon. I’m betting on BA. He’s not running from a fight. He could’ve turned in the health card, and followed Brady to retirement. If this ship is going down next season, it will be with it’s captain. Takes guts to stay with Gabbert, and Trask as your only QB options.

  20. Billyboy2211 Says:

But but but all the gm’s here that know better dont think so how theyre not in football i dont know

  21. Listnfrmafar Says:

Nice spin Joe, the reality is:
    1. 2019 was a losing season 7-9
    2. Brady changed the culture which led the team to the SB. BA ADMITS he does nothing and relies on coaches and players “They know what to do.”
    3. He lost the locker room after AB and Adam’s blow ups.
    4. His lack of preparation and lackadaisical attitude carried over to his staff which in turn lost the Rams game.
    5. The players don’t want to play for him that’s why they are leaving.
    6. BA doesn’t have what it takes to win, Brady recognized this and left.
    7. He throws players under the bus.
    8. Why wasn’t he prepared for what was.the inevitable the 2022 season everyone else saw this coming?
    9. Why is the probowl QB know as the turnover machine excel under the guidance of Payton, with very few turnovers?
    10. QB whisperer, NO, BS artist YES!

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

Nice try, Listnfrmafar, but no cigar. What Joe lists is fact. Your crap is pulled straight from your arse, which apparently also houses your brain.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Some fans hated BA from the beginning only to disappear for almost 2 years because of his SB victory & winning season.
The minute Bucs lost to the Rams the drumbeat intensified and now BA can do no good….
Fair weather fans…..actually not fans at all….

My favorite Buc coaches….Jon Gruden & Bruce Arians….do you have to ask why?

  24. August 1976 Buc Says:

List have you even still watched every game of the 2019 season like I said to you months ago? Most likely not.
You speak from what you do not know about the 2019 season.

BA has Lifetime winning record, BEFORE BRADY and WITH BRADY.

NO SPIN by Joe List…, you are MR BIASED LISTrmfar, that is just how it is.

You do not like BA, and you just keep your negative crap, and deny the simple facts.

Again BA had a career winning record before Brady ever played for him

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. Ben Harvey Says:

Bruce is a great coach but I do believe his staff at times has brain facts and makes poor in game decisions. The Brady affect hid this well but they were clearly outcoached by a few teams over the past couple of seasons. Saints for one had their way with them. Bruce may be a good coach but the Bucs are in trouble, especially if they don’t fix the defense. That should be their focus. The offense means little when you do not have a qb and can’t stop the other team from scoring.

  26. T REX Says:

    Brady was coach/GM here.

This group of losers didn’t win anything.

  27. Its a Bucs Life Says:

1-6 versus Sean Payton as Bucs Coach

1-3 vs Sean McVay as Bucs Coach

Doesn’t call plays, which was his strength in every other place he’s been

Openly admits to not coming to offensive meetings

Arians motto is to out talent people not outcoach or out scheme opponents. in a league where coaching matters Arians is semi retired chillin on a golf cart mismanaging big personalities and riding the coat tails of the GOAT. Prior to Brady he was 7-9 and lucky to be that.

  28. Listnfrmafar Says:

August, describe winning? Barely over .500? I was not a BA hater pre Bucs, I thought he was OK but nothing special. He never won a SB so it’s hard to put him up with the big boys. My evaluation is from what I’ve seen over the last two seasons. Sorry but he’s lazy and maybe it’s just because he’s burnt out, he’s been in the game for a long time. He states like he wants to be every players beer swilling uncle, yet he scolds players like the grandfather that tells you how to raise your children. As far as 2019, I am not sure what August is getting at, if Wi.ston was that bad then he needs to be COACHED up. This was proven once he went to NO. BA cannot beat the better coaches, Patton & McVay and apparently now Rivera. Hey stick to your guns that’s OK your opinion counts but mark my words, BA does not relate to today’s players and he will show his true colors in 2022.

  29. Wild Bill Says:

Coaches don’t play the game. The players do. The best coaches can squeeze an extra game or two each season from their players, but if you don’t have the horses you rarely win the race. The Glazers went out and bought the nucleus of new players, especially Brady, Gronk, and Lenny that lifted the Bucs from pretty good to Super Bowl winners. Arians might have been holding the reins but the Glazers bought the horses. Arians lost respect from Brady and others this past season and the team was not the same from the getgo.

  30. BA4President Says:

I’m convinced Dennis Leary’s character in “Draft Day” was LOOSELY based off of Gruden.

    -Doesn’t like rookie quarterbacks
    -Verbally cocky, self-important offensive coach
-Doesn’t get along with GM that helped hire him
    – GM “(Owner) thinks you coached the (NFL Team).”
Coach “I did coach the (NFL Team)”
GM “And I think you were a bad babysitter”
    – Owner “Coach Penn has a Super Bowl Ring. He used to coach the (NFL Team), you know?”
GM “He took over for a team that won the Super Bowl and then proceeded to run it into the ground. Got himself fired.”
    – Similar angry smirk

Anyone agree or am I nuts??

  31. BA4President Says:

Also, you BA haters are wild. We were a few plays from the NFC Championship last year. Who cares if he isn’t in the offensive meetings if it is working. I thought this was a results oriented league?? No??

We have the best three consecutive seasons of football this team has seen since 2000-2002 (Dungy, Dungy, Gruden), and you guys somehow think a the Head Coach is screwing up… WOW

Additionally, how are people hating on BA and simultaneously crediting the Glazers for the SB win? How does that make sense?! They hired him to manage the day-to-day activities of an army of coaches under him. He did that and the results came. That’s like praising the plumbing company while dissing the plumber who fixed the leak.

  32. Posey99 Says:

“A sect of Bucs fans cannot comprehend how or why Arians doesn’t put all his eggs in Kyle Trask’s basket ”

He already did by saying Kyle Trask is door #1… that’s like, kind of a big story that was covered by everybody.

  33. Cobraboy Says:

@Listn: I know you’re a JBF casual fan noob, but ATM had five years of getting “coached up” and still went 30/30.

If you were here, you’d have suffered along with long-time hardcore, all-in Buc fans.

But you were fapping elsewhere, so you’re ignorant, not just stoopit.

  34. Listnfrmafar Says:

Cobra, so Winsten had 5 years with the QB WHISPERER???? Give me a break, the excuses just keep coming. BA4Pres, seriously you’re boasting about a 7-9 season? That’s frigging sad. Are you all forgetting about the 1st 1/2 of the 2020 season and how undiscipline the team was and Brady was losing his mind? Who was your HC then? EXACTLY, the invisible one. He will finish a loser as the Bucs HC just how he started in 2019. Actually you’ll be praying for 7 wins.

  35. Its a Bucs Life Says:

My opinion of the Semi Retired Arians will change if he can coax a winning season out of this roster in 2022. If they are 7 wins or less it just shows how little he was responsible for in 2020

  36. BA4President Says:

    Cobra’s right.
@Listn needs to go find a different NFL team blog, one where he can hate on a head coach that doesn’t have a 78% winning percentage with his current team, a Super Bowl ring as the head coach, or multiple AP NFL Coach of the Year awards.

That should give you over 20 other teams to choose from, where your arguments against the head coach will sound much less silly.

  37. Listnfrmafar Says:

I will say one thing BA4Pres@ BA remind
me of our current clueless, accountability dodging, old senile President. Love it, 78%, why do you think he won’t release Brady? He’s scared shatless, because without 2020 and 2021 that % ain’t so high and definitely no ring. No worries the % will come plummeting down mid way through 2022 season. Seriously give me one scenario other than arse lapping Brady to get him to Tampa that this guy has done to help this team?

  38. Buccos Says:

Arians is clearly the best coach we have ever had. A dumb @ss Pats fan is the only one who wouldn’t know this. As far as losing to the Super Bowl champion Rams there is no shame in that. It was their year. A team of destiny perhaps. The thing that bothers me about it was their kicker. Whose dumb@ass idea was it to cut Matt Gay. I believe he was an All Pro last year. How could you draft a kicker with that much potential and then cut him. Why bother to draft the guy if you aren’t willing to see him find his way. The Rams don’t win it all without him. Meanwhile Succop comes crashing back to Earth. Look no further than the kicker!

  39. Idahobucfan4life Says:

@ModHair, Dungy drafted and coached incredibly well. He changed the culture of the organization like few can. He had his short comings, yes, but the team finally started to become competitive again after more than a decade of futility before him. If you don’t see what he did, you aren’t paying attention to history. In my opinion, Chucky took Dungy’s team and gave them some “juice” for one year and then landed the team squarely in the garbage can in salary cap hell shortly thereafter. He won the Superbowl with Dungy’s team. Arians built his own.

    Arians – #1, Dungy – #2, McKay – #3, Wyche – #4, Gruden #5.
