Trading Kyle Trask

February 15th, 2022

Kyle Trask

Joe often is asked about second-year Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask, who just finished his first season as Tampa Bay’s third-string QB.

There’s not much to say. The Bucs’ braintrust of quarterback gurus deemed Trask worthy of the final pick of Round 2 in last year’s draft, and then Trask got to learn from and train with the greatest quarterback on the planet.

Can Trask play? Nobody knows. His practice reps were limited and he never took a regular-season snap. He didn’t even start a preseason game.

Would the win-now Bucs ride with any first-time starter in 2022? Joe doesn’t think so.

When is the last time a first-time starter won a Super Bowl?

Joe was asked recently by a fan to explain Trask’s value to the Bucs. It’s a great question, and Joe responded that Trask’s true value could be determined by what the trade market would pay for him.

It’s not a spectacular draft class for quarterbacks this year. So Joe assumes the Bucs could fetch at least a late second-round pick for Trask. He certainly should have that kind of value after a year with Tom Brady, Bucco Bruce Arians, Byron Leftwich, Tom Moore and Clyde Christensen.

Hypothetically, if no team would trade more than an early fourth-round pick or a late third-rounder for Trask, then what would that say?

Again, Joe can’t speak to Trask’s value to the Bucs roster because it’s a complete mystery. But if the Bucs sign an established veteran quarterback and name him their starter, then Joe thinks the Bucs should at least consider trading Trask if there’s a strong offer out there for him. Especially if Arians yearns to bring back his beloved backup, Blaine Gabbert.

  1. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Trask is a throw in as part of the Trade for Wilson along with 2 #1’s and a 2nd rounder just so Seattle can say we have gotten a guy that is better than anybody in this years draft.

  2. Swampbuc Says:

I hated the pick — but the Bucs didn’t draft him in the second round last season to trade him now.

That said, it the Bucs could get back a second rounder, that would be like stealing and Licht should do that before the alcoholic on the other end of the phone passes out.

But no one is offering more than a sixth for Trashk, so the Bucs might as well prove that he sucks first.

  3. tampabuscsbro Says:

I feel like expectations are way too high. We had a loaded roster and blew games for dumb reasons. I don’t think Joe and others understand how much Brady really meant to the offense. aside from some blockbusters selling the teams soul for Russel Wilson there isn’t anyone out there.

Also have you looked at the schedule yet. We had a cake walk in comparison this year and now have the toughest schedule in the league. It’s going to be impressive just to make the playoffs next year no matter who is under center.

  4. PassingThru Says:

    Caveat emptor

Trask is a “blind good”. A blind good is when the seller sells something that they only know of the true quality, but the buyer (like a consumer) has little idea, they are buying on faith.

The danger is that everyone knows that the Bucs are in dire need of a QB, so why are they selling Trask? That’s why I don’t think he’ll fetch anything remotely near a 2nd round pick, as the act of selling him is informing the other GMs that the Bucs don’t believe in him.

  5. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Wilson has indicated he does not want to leave Seattle.
I think we keep Trask, to see what we have ?
This is not a great QB Draft class

  6. Casual Observer Says:

Didn’t Kurt Warner (who nobody wanted) win a super bowl in his first year!
No, it took Kurt Warner several years and a trip to NFL Europe and the Arena League. –Joe

  7. AL121976 Says:

I don’t think we should trade him. Arians said he thought about taking him in the first round @32, why would anyone say that or draft him as early as they did just to trade him a year later? I wasn’t totally on board w the pick however, I do want to see what he can do. Plus, it’s a brutal schedule next season, rather a vet take the heat than young Trask.

  8. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

I don’t care about Trask right now

  9. PassingThru Says:

    @Casual

Technically, it was Warner’s second year in the NFL. He didn’t play much behind the incredible Tony Banks.

Warner actually had a ton of football experience under his belt though, after Arena Football as well as NFL Europe.

  10. D-Rome Says:

When is the last time a first-time starter won a Super Bowl?

Tom Brady and Kurt Warner were the last two to do it.

  11. D-Rome Says:

Technically, it was Warner’s second year in the NFL. He didn’t play much behind the incredible Tony Banks.

True, but Joe asked the last time a ‘first-time starter’ won a Super Bowl. Warner and Brady were first time starters in the NFL when they won their first Super Bowl.

  12. sasquatch Says:

    What the?

You draft a QB high enough to indicate you have future plans for him. Then you spend a year coaching him. Then you trade him? Where does this lunacy come from?

Unless they’re disappointed in him, there’s no way you’d do this for less than a mid first round pick.

  13. tampabuscsbro Says:

Sasquatch, it’s because Joe doesn’t like Trask for some reason.

He has literally commented in here how he would rather have Justin Fields then Trask. It seems like to Joe Draft stock seems to mean everything.

    I don’t get it either.

  14. tampabuscsbro Says:

Why am I in moderation jail so much Joe what did I do?

I’m not commenting anything any worse then all the other people on here do

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

When is the last time a first-time starter won a Super Bowl?

Since when is that the criteria for a starting QB (any QB)…..after all, 31 of them didn’t achieve that last year….or the year before that or ever.

Trading Trask or attempting to trade Trask makes zero sense…..all it would do is rock his confidence if the trade didn’t happen.

Although, on the other hand….how many players do we have that are tradeable…..players that have value that we don’t need to keep?

  16. Joe Says:

Sasquatch, it’s because Joe doesn’t like Trask for some reason.

You are going to have to explain to Joe why Joe “hates” Kyle Trask because it’s not true.

But have to admit so many people inventing crap claiming Joe “hates” Trask is starting to motivate Joe to develop a distaste for him because there are so many girlish whiners.

  17. doolnutts Says:

I loved this pick showed how much foresight Licht really has. I think the bucs are targeting a big splash QB but if that fails as it could we can start Trask. Can you imagine if Trask WASNT on the roster and we serious had just Gabbert and Griffin. I would be sh*tting my pants haha.

Going with Trask will make everyone uneasy but if that is plan D and getting wilson or someone like him doesn’t work out I will take a young unproven player over a career back up any day of the week.

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Sure if it is part of a deal for Wilson, JimmyG, or Rodgers. If not keep him and give him some playing time. I didn’t like the pick, think he is just another Gator loser QB, but based on what the Bucs put into him, no use in trading him for anything less than part of a deal for a franchise QB. Might as well keep him next year and see if he will be any good when the real bullets start to fly.

  19. SufferingSince76 Says:

I don’t understand why a second round draft pick was basically tucked away from public view and why discussion about him is vague.

  20. tampabuscsbro Says:

Cause Joe you are writing an article talking about trading him. What are the readers supposed to take away from that?

Also Joe you’re setting your expectations a bit high in thinking this team after losing brady unless they get Wilson without trading multiple starters is going to win a super bowl. Or win multiple playoff games.

  21. Richard Dickson Says:

Saw a mock last night that had us taking Matt Corral from Mississippi at 27. First mock I’ve seen that had us drafting a QB.

  22. Roy T. Buford Says:

Like the waves of COVID, there are rises and falls. I don’t think, first, that there is a realistic chance of keeping most starters in 2022, and second, I don’t think this team contends for anything deep into the playoffs, though yeah, anything can happen. If there is a genuine “win now” belief with any true seriousness of getting far, I think there is a lack of objective thought at One Buc. We had the peak with the 2021 rise and SB victory. Sure, for business, bring in another name, but keep developing Trask because developing for the future is needed at QB.

  23. Swampbuc Says:

Thanks, Todd. We’re talking about Trashk because Brady retired.

Tom could’ve probably withstood Gisele’s hooves to the side of his head if a competent performance by the defense had been put forward. But given the utter boneheadedness, the complete egregrious dereliction of duty displayed by the Bowels of Todd, Brady could no longer justify the beatings he was taking from defensive lines. Geezela wants him fresh enough to withstand her own “instructions.”

Licht — Glazerettes — get to work. Get Tom out from under the hooves of the horsefaced commandant before it’s too late.

  24. HC Grover Says:

This tape will self destruct in 10 seconds.

  25. New England Patriots Fan Says:

NFL.com Dan Hanzeus 2022 Season Power Ranking article title “Bradyless Bucaneers is barely a top 20 team” ranked at no 19 noted without a major move at QB they are not a playoff team.

  26. New England Patriots Fan Says:

PFF top 100 players in NFL for 2021: had 5 Tampa Bay players Tom, Ali, Antoine, Donavan, Wirfs. Only def player was Antoine. They of course grade the Oline well and Tom.

  27. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m starting to think this might be one of Licht’s f ups. Sorta like that 2nd rd kicker we had. The fact we are making calls trying to acquire another QB already tells me, The organization see both Gabbert and trask as backups.

  28. tampabuscsbro Says:

Mike Johnson, Where in the article did it say that we are making calls?

Joe is just writing this article as speculation as to his worth.

Now why he is doing this is up to you.

  29. tampabuscsbro Says:

unless you mean attempting to trade for one then that’s a different story. But normally QB trades just do not happen unless a kings ransom is sent.

  30. allbuccedup Says:

You don’t draft a player in the second round and trade him. As far as trade value Joe must have been a loaded goat to think Bucs would get a second rounder for him. He wasn’t even activated for a game. As far as working with BA and BL didn’t improve Josh Rosen. You would be lucky to get a 5th rounder for him so he stays.

  31. Nayrb Says:

    In Trask We Trust

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

This is a good old fashioned quandary. First, I doubt Trask is traded for all the reasons listed above.
Second, if the Bucs go after a big-name QB, they are mortgaging the present and the future. Why? Money! How will we afford the FAs and pieces we need if all our capital, money and draft, is tied up into ONE player.
Third, what QB is gong to want to come to a team without a C, G, RB, TE, or WR? That’s just the offensive side of the ball.
Conversely, if those positions are locked in…?!

    So, a quandary indeed!!!

  33. Durango 95 Says:

One of these days the Bucs need to draft and develop a franchise QB. That may not be Trask but getting rid of him might be another lost opportunity.

  34. Mike C Says:

    Swampbuc, you are so clever!

  35. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Passing Thru

I agree. Doesn’t make much sense to me either.

“hey we don’t have a QB but we really like this kid we drafted last year – he will be a great QB one day… Give us a second round pick for him”

    LOL – huh?

This makes no sense to me…

Gabbert/Trask will be our QBs next year.

  36. snookman Says:

If we get Wilson or Rogers then I would move Trask. Unless we get a hall of fame replacment to come in here and try and make another run…………our best path to sustained success is a young developed QB. Bruce Arians has proven he is the right man for this job………..Jameis had his most productive years depsite INTS, Brady had two fantastic years, Palmer was a stud, luck, manning, and rothelsburger………………

  37. Marine Buc Says:

Plus – we just lost another $3 million of salary cap dollars…

“Second year in a row, Bucs have three players getting nice bumps in final year of their rookie contracts due to NFL’s Proven Performance Escalator incentive. Sean Murphy-Bunting, Jamel Dean and Mike Edwards each will make $2.54 million, a bump of $1m+ from their original deals.”

I’m happy for these players but we just lost another $3 million under the cap.

Could have signed 2 depth players with this money…

  38. allbuccedup Says:

I actually thought Mac Jones and Kyle Trask were similar QBs. Belicheat gave Jones a shot he did ok. Its time to give Trask a shot if he does ol fine if not 2023 draft has a better qb class.

  39. Oneilbuc Says:

The crazy thing to me is back in the day yall would have gotten rid of Montana, Wilson, Dak, Brady, Mahomes and Rogers Joe. All the people who talk down Trask and hate the Trask pick have no real substance on why he can’t be a good quarterback lol 😂 🤣! The problem is the national media has become the GM for every fan base and teams website!!

  40. Posey99 Says:

“But have to admit so many people inventing crap claiming Joe “hates” Trask is starting to motivate Joe to develop a distaste for him because there are so many girlish whiners.”

There’s just as many, if not more, that come here to bash trashk*. If you’re right about Trask you’ll look like a genius, if you’re wrong you’ll look like a moron. Or you can just wait for him to play, which is a smart idea since hes been making people juding him his whole career look like idiots.

  41. Posey99 Says:

    judging*

  42. Buczilla Says:

Lol, we just get this kid. Trade bait for a top 5 qb? I’d do it that in a heartbeat to save some picks, but otherwise hell no.

  43. Oneilbuc Says:

Posey99. That’s the whole point bro you don’t know until he gets a real chance to see what he does if he’s good than cool. If he’s bad than move on it’s that simple!! But at the same time you let him go without giving him a chance and he becomes a great quarterback than people on here will be sick remember Steve Young ?? It could happen again if you don’t give Trask a chance to see what he is. Because at this point all you have is what he done in college wich he balled in college!!

  44. QB1 Says:

Trask hasn’t taken enough felony uber rides for Joe to be on board yet. TB12 wants no part of this coaching staff. He’s seen enough after we shat the bed to the Rams. Time to move on to the next QB1.

I would be happy with either Jimmy G or Carr. If we want to save money and beef up the defense plus keep Lenny and Godwin, Trask is the logical choice for this season.

Enough with the illogical rambling articles.

  45. Duane Says:

The time it takes to properly develop a young QB gets coaches fired. The best value Trask has for this team is another year learning on the sidelines behind another veteran. I dont think this kid will ever be the answer, but throwing him to the wolves this season is a waste of everyone’s time.

  46. tampabuscsbro Says:

    Oneilbuc I agree.

TBH I don’t like putting much stock into college stats. BUT Kyle’s are great. He lit up the SEC with a great WR and a generational tight end. But didn’t have a good O line or any running game. Also he was on a team that would lose games because a player decided to throw another players shoe.

  47. Niles Says:

    “allbuccedup Says:
I actually thought Mac Jones and Kyle Trask were similar QBs. Belicheat gave Jones a shot he did ok. Its time to give Trask a shot if he does ol fine if not 2023 draft has a better qb class.”

Exactly. In fact in the 2020 SEC Championship game, Kyle Trask played as well as Mac Jones. Arguably, Trask played better, as Jones had a better team backing him up. See their stats below.

    Mac Jones – 418 YDS – 9.7 AVG – 5 TD – 1 INT – 92.3 QBR
    Kyle Trask – 408 YDS – 10.2 AVG – 3 TD – 0 INT – 91.7 QBR

Belichick started Jones as a rookie and made it to the playoffs. But then Belichick knows what he’s doing.

  48. Hodad Says:

Let’s trade the only QB under contract who we’ve spent a year developing. Blaine Gabbert will be resigned, and start the season with Trask competing to back him up, or push him for the starting job.

  49. Stone crab sam Says:

    History repeats.
    Gropenator 2.
    Deshawn watson.
    Future Bucs qb.
That’s my WAG and I’m sticking to it.
This organization has proven over again to have a giant pair of cajones and I see them not changing strategies.

  50. LakelandSteve Says:

The Bucs need to get what they can for Trask while they can. If he was that great when the Bucs players like Mike Evans is asked what should the Bucs do about a QB Evans never mentions Trask. The players know who is good and who isn’t and when you don’t have one person going, oh don’t worry we are set at QB then it’s time to start worrying. Get a decent trade for him now before the preseason games starts and everyone sees for themselves what they got for a second round pick.

  51. Kerry Preston Says:

I’m not too sure what anyone is expecting from them. The only way we would be in any condition to compete in the postseason is if we drop some players that are earning a big check if we can think of a more cost-effective way to move forward. That could and (IMO), should include Trask. Like it has been stated here in the comments and everywhere else, you don’t draft a quarterback that high just to trade him the following year without even a single audition.

Right now we just need him to be higher quality than any of our backups have been. Pieces on defense didn’t really produce this season and may find themselves out the door. We can also trade other players to bring in replacement pieces.

Adjust some contracts, shore up the front line, draft a couple of defensive replacements, and we could actually be perfectly fine. We don’t have the strongest division in football so we could still have a chance with Trask

  52. Craig Says:

First, no NFC team is going to trade away a quality QB to another NFC team. There are only a handful of good AFC QBs, and none of them are going to be traded.

That leaves second rate AFC QBs. Trask, right now, has a higher potential than any of those guys.

I don’t think Trask is stupid, I think he worked on all of his mechanics and the playbook. He isn’t another Wuerfull. Dan Mullin wasn’t enough of a coach to have affected his game much.

Do I think he should start, depends on if he wins a fair competition.

  53. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I wonder if Falcons fans were happy when they traded away some 2nd round pick QB who rode the pine as a 3rd string QB in his rookie year…and then Favre landed in Green Bay. The rest, as they say, is history. Now I’m not implying Trask is a future Hall if Fame QB, BUT none of us know what the Bucs have in Trask at this point. He may be as good or better than any of the QB’s coming out in this year’s draft class?

  54. Winny Testaverde Says:

The Bucs could use the 8th round pick he’d fetch in a trade.

  55. WalkdaPlank Says:

When is the last time a first-year starter won a Super Bowl?

Not very many but if you bump this expectation down ONE LEVEL to the Conference Championship game the list of recent QB’s grows. Patrick Mahomes, Colin Kaepernick, Mark Sanchez, and Joe’s precious Jimmy G all made it to the Conference Championship game in their first *full* season as starters (key word “full” because of injuries for some). If you bump it down lower to the Divisional round it grows even more.

I agree that nobody quite knows what the Bucs have in Kyle Trask but counting him out before he even gets a shot is a bit shallow to me. Guy was a 2nd round pick for a reason and that reason was NOT for him to be traded the first year he has the opportunity to start following the retirement of Tom Brady. That’s just silly.

  56. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Joe is the last Person who should be speculating about QBs. Just sayin! Jonny Football……..

“I know Kyle is a really talented guy. He sat behind Tom, watched a lot, observed,” Evans said. “He’s a really talented guy. … He has really great arm talent, and he’s a student of the game, sitting back learning this year. Hopefully, he has a big leap next year.” – Mike Evans a few days ago.

  58. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, I’ve tried my best to figure out why you’d even write an article entitled ‘Trading Kyle Trask’ but I keep coming up with nada, zip, zero, zilch. Has there been a single whiff from the Bucs’ hierarchy that they’re even contemplating trading Kyle Trask? Actually from anyone?

The Bucs have a decent young QB in Kyle Trask who had a pretty decent college career playing against some quality opponents. He’s got excellent size (6’5″ and 236 lbs) for a QB and spent a year learning the nuances of being an NFL QB from no less than Tom Brady. And best of all, his TOTAL 4year contract will only cost us $5.5 mil. To put that in perspective, Cam Brate is making roughly 1.5 times as much … JUST THIS YEAR.

Trask did what the Bucs asked him to do in 2021: sit & learn.
Even if Trask doesn’t win the starting job, at least keep him as our backup QB for heaven’s sake. We’ve got tons of other fish to fry IF we expect to be competitive in the NFC South for the next 3 years that remain in his current contract. Give the kid a fair chance to compete before starting the silly trade talk.

  59. catcard202 Says:

Trading Trask now makes no sense & would signal that the FO screwed the pooch in 2021 by not using that 2nd rd pick on a 2021 contributor.

The most likely scenario is the Bucs keep him & let him compete for QB1 w/ a low dollar journeyman (like Gabbert).

At worst, Trask is a low dollar rookie contract BU QB thru 2024…Trask’s 4yrs @ $5.585M total is hella cheap for a NFL BU QB….Even if he never rises to be the Bucs QB1, his deal helps the FO budget positional spending elsewhere.

  62. 1sparkybuc Says:

Trask has been a surprise in HS , and again in college. He has been ready and made good with both opportunities. By all accounts he’s not limited physically or mentally. I believe we can win the division with Trask and whoever ends up on the roster come September. We have talent here. Build the team around him. Maybe Brady comes back in August and Trask gets another year to learn behind him. Trask knows the playbook. Trading him would be foolish.

  63. Posey99 Says:

“Then J gets defensive when people ask why doesn’t he like the 2021 64th overall pick. While writing articles like this”.

Not only writes article like these that make zero sense but also writes headlines like Mike Evans didn’t mention Trask, when he actually DID mention Trask!
Hello? Hello? What Joe wrote was specific to one interview and targeted questions on NBC on the quarterback position.–Joe And it wasn’t like that NFL.com article was hard to find.

  64. BUCman Says:

This is the stupidest idea I’ve heard you have! Drafting Trask last year was a great move showing great forward thinking! If Trask were to come out this year he would be talked about as a first rounder. He is as good or better then every QB in the draft. Give the guy a chance to show what he can do! Trading away all our future draft picks and eating up all our cap space for one of the drama queens (Rogers, Wilson, Watson, Murray) would ruin this franchise for a decade. With Trask you can build around him because you will be able to bring back a lot of our free agents plus have all our draft picks. For those who are hoping for one of the drama queens listed above; be careful what you wish for. It’s not going to be like it was when we got Brady. We didn’t have to trade for him. He didn’t cost us three years of first and second round picks. And he took a discount to be sure we kept everyone around him. Go ahead, get Wilson or Watson. You better hope he can catch his own passes, block for himself, and play defense & special teams all by himself. If Trask works out we could be set for 10 – 15 years. But you won’t know unless you try. Can you imagine trading Trask before you even know what you have and he ends up a star for someone else for the next decade or more. Just ask Atlanta who drafted Brett Favre in the second round (pick #33) and traded him the next year before even giving him a chance. Wow, must have sucked being a Falcon’s fan for the next 19 years.

  65. Rod Munch Says:

If you traded Trask, you’d be lucky to get a 6th rounder. He was the 4th string QB last year, and if you traded him, that would tell other teams he’s a bust, since no one is trading a 2nd year QB if they think he has a future. Yes, in the early 90s, Favre was the exception to this rule, but in case you didn’t know, there’s been a lot of 2nd round QBs drafted since then.

  66. Defense Rules Says:

1 SparkyBuc … Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until you lose it. In the case of ex-Bucs players, Matt Gay comes to mind; wasn’t good enough for the Bucs but now he sports a Super Bowl ring. So does LeGarette Blount; not good enough to stick with the Bucs, but now sports 3 Super Bowl rings. The list goes on and on.

In our storied history since 1976, Bucs have started a grand total of 38 QBs. We must hold the record there. Some guy named Steve Young got to start 19 games for us, but he couldn’t hack it so we traded him to the 49ers after 2 years for a 2nd Rnd & 4th Rnd pick. Young went on to have a HOF career, playing 13 yrs for San Fran and winning 3 Super Bowls. Those 2 draft picks got us Winston Moss & Bruce Hill; everyone remembers them, don’t they?

    ————–

Young started for most of 2 years, he wasn’t the 4th string QB.

Also, of course real Bucs fans remember Bruce Hill and Winston Moss. Hill and Mark Carrier were one of best young duo of WRs in the NFL at one point. Winston Moss was a really good, solid player, and had a long coaching career in the NFL, winning a SB with the Packers as an assistant head coach.

  68. Ronnie Richardson Jr Says:

Or keep him on the roster to be the backup behind whoever you’re going to get.

  69. BUCman Says:

Trask was not 4th string! He was drafted with the expectation to redshirt him and let him sit and learn for the year. He was never active on game day by design, not because he was lacking in any way. They wanted to spend the year developing him. Gabbert & Griffin already had time in Arians system and the plan from day one was for Gabbert to be the backup to Brady and Griffin as the emergency QB. This is not a case of him not being able to climb the depth chart. He was never part of the depth chart. He did what was asked of him. From what’s come out he has shown to be intelligent and a hard worker (first in, last out). I do think however that they were hoping to have a second year to finish developing him but Brady’s announcement has caught them off guard.

  70. Ronnie Richardson Jr Says:

Who knows what might happen anything possible just get a man a chance what the hell you going to draft a quarterback and then you want to trade them off keep him there whoever you bringing in behind let them be a backup behind them let him learn more

That the same stuff they did back in the days with Steve Young Steve Young went to the 49ers went on and won two super bowls because you want to trade somebody off and don’t know what they value might be to the team in the near future

  72. Posey99 Says:

“Hello? Hello? What Joe wrote was specific to one interview and targeted questions on NBC on the quarterback position.–Joe“

Guess the NFL story wasn’t interesting enough. I found it very interesting that the greatest buccaneer recieved ever commented on Trask arm strength and being a student of the game, since well ya know, nobody has seen trask throw all year.

  73. Alan Mullins Says:

We got keep Trask I think he will be the first qb we resigned just got to give him a shot if we trade him he will definitely go somewhere and be one of the best in the NFL you’re in and you’re out just like Brett favre just like Steve Young we can’t be that big red bonehead we’ve never ever resigned a quarterback in the history of the buccaneers we got to give this guy a chance what he did in college he deserves a chance in NFL he sat behind Tom for a year he knows the playbook inside and out he’s a big strong quarterback like Big Ben I think he’ll do just fine when it’s a lot of games maybe a lot of super bowls give him a chance you don’t know if you don’t give them a chance so Tampa please give traffic a chance thanks for listening

  74. Swampbuc Says:

I didn’t read where Joe said he’d prefer Justin Fields to Heap of Trashk. But that would be a correct football take. If you critics haven’t noticed, the Joes know a little bit about football.

And I’m certain that Trashk will underperform fellow Gators Rex GrossMan and Danny Wuerfful. In fact Trashk will make those two look like Montana and Manning.

But Joe never said those things. Joe has said, no one can know because no one has seen him.

Anyone wishing for that guy to start for the Bucs has serious self-destruct issues.

  75. Defense Rules Says:

Munch … ‘Young started for most of 2 years, he wasn’t the 4th string QB.’

Horsepuckey; check your facts. Young started 5 games for us in 1985 (Deberg started the first 11 and we were 1-10 before Young got a chance to start). Deberg also started the first 2 games in 1986 (we went 0-2) then Young replaced him for the remaining 14 games before being traded to San Fran. Those 2 years the Bucs went 4-28 under Leeman Bennett, with Culverhouse as our cheapskate owner.

And Kyle Trask wasn’t the 4th string QB like you keep spouting, any more than Borregales was the 2nd string kicker. Both of them were protected all year for a reason (thanks to the COVID rules). Trask’s job was to sit & learn. Bumpkins like you would never give him a chance to compete for a starting job; you’d much rather spend tons of money on some big-name and destroy the TEAM in the process. You’d also be the one to trade away a Steve Young because he had a losing record instead of looking for the real problems (the 1985 & 1986 Bucs didn’t have much working for them, especially having to play in the Black & Blue division).

LOL! You Florida fanbois need to lay off the meth.

  77. David Says:

I think Joe is doing great job writing these useless articles on Trask to get the readers/fans attention. Trask will start if given a chance to compete.

  78. SB~LV Says:

    Cray , cray talk !

  79. steele Says:

Trask is a complete mystery. A work in progress is still an incomplete and a mystery. The Bucs coordinators are the only ones who have anything solid to go on, but even their information is limited to practices and a few preseason games that were a total mixed bag, equal parts good and awful.

Being drafted in rd. 2 means nothing, “expectations” mean nothing. He could be a bust, a Ryan Leaf, or a future Hall of Famer, a trade chip or a backup. Trask is in the middle of a process that is now prematuredly ejacul..interrupted. Brady wasn’t supposed to quit this soon.

Trading him is not cray. It all depends on what is being traded for. This team is short the kind of assets to compete. It might be necessary to consider jettisoning Kyle. If.

  80. Buccos Says:

Trask is an insurance policy. We can resign everyone and don’t spend big money on a free agent QB. That way if Brady decides to un retire it will be with the Bucs. We can just restructure a few contracts and boom- we’ve got friggin Tom Brady as our QB again!

  81. Oneilbuc Says:

Buccos. Give it up Brady dose not want to play for the bucs lol 😆. Forget Brady stop crying on and begging on your knees for Brady. Stop being a loser and have some pride in the team if you’re a real bucs fan!!

  82. Posey99 Says:

Swampbuc, you know all your speculation with trask everyday you’re either going to look like a genius or an idiot. I know you like to compare trask to old gators QB’s but he broke their college records in his first full season. Suggesting trask will be trash isn’t based on any facts, it pure speculation. No different then saying trask will be a pro bowler, would also be wild speculation. Guess what, we don’t know better then Arians, Christensen and Licht. Not only have they seen him up close in personal but they have had first hand experience with the best Qb’s ever to play.

It’s too bad some fans can’t cheer for our young players to do well. Imagine being in anyones shoes just coming into the league, trying to make your family proud and you have fans saying you suck and journalist suggesting you may be traded before you take a snap because they are all butt hurt Brady left. Let’s root for whoever is on our team to do well.

  83. Swampbuc Says:

Posey — I cheered for Trashk when he was at Florida. I saw a kid with the luxury of throwing to Toney, Pitts, great backs out of the backfield and a plethora of young talent. He’d drop back, lock in on his primary, wait, and fire. Often into double or triple coverage. Lucky for him, Toney and Pitts could often make plays in stpie of being blanketed because theirs was the superior talent to those covering them.

Mine is an opinion based on watching Trashk at Florida. His breed do not make good NFL QBs.

And ask if I care what you or anyone thinks about my opinion? It’s my opinion. You have yours. Disagree if you like but please lay off the “Ooooh you better be careful because if Trashk turns out to be great you’ll look like an idiot.”

And BTW — if Trashk turns out to be great, I’ll be ecstatic because it would be good for the Bucs.

And if he turns out to be a bust, you’ll look like the slobbering snowflake fanboy that you are. So what? It’s who you are. Wear it proudly.

So take your admonishments, put them in a suppository and send them to Todd’s Bowels. He could probably use a good cleanse, he’s unlikely to have crapped since the Rams game.

  84. Posey99 Says:

I didn’t say he’s going to be great I just said he has some tangibles that have transferred to the NFL well. Saying a guys sucks that has never played is reckless at best. Lots of great QB’s who stared down their WR in college. Sh!t Peyton Manning did it his whole rookie year in the NFL

  85. Wild Bill Says:

Too many needs on the Bucs right now. Weak dbs. Old defensive line. Weak pass rush. A ton of free agents who will get decent offers. Neither Trask nor Gabbert got significant game time. Need a wide out to replace AB. Bucks odds on being a playoff team next season? Slim. Licht and the Bucs are facing a significant rebuild year or two. Will a fat old head coach even want to face the work ahead?

  86. Anonymous Says:

It isn’t Trask fault that he wasn’t chosen as qb2. AB wanted to have his favored boy, Gabbert as QB2 in cast Tom Brady got hurt and he could win the super bowl with Gabbert. Wrong/mistake. Well Tom didn’t get hurt and Bucs couldn’t even win super bowl with him let alone with Gabbert. It is hard to win super bowl back to back or twice for any team. Only three qb’s in NFL history have started and won the super bowl in their first year with a new team. Stop gambling and allow Trask to win the starting job.

  87. Anonymous Says:

There i no need for free agent qb’s. None of these qb’s have ever won super bowl before playing with the same teams for many years. What makes you think they can come and win super bowl in their first year with Bucs.

  88. JoJo Dancer Says:

All we are saying is give Trask a chance!
