QB Trade Could Happen Next Week

February 25th, 2022

The NFL trading season is closed and won’t reopen for a while, but it’s important to remember that trades can still be agreed to now.

When was Matthew Stafford traded to the Rams?

The agreement in principle between Detroit and Los Angeles came a few days before the Super Bowl last year, then it became official in March.

What about when the 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Chiefs. That huge 2013 deal was locked down on February 27th of that year and was consummated the following month.

Longtime 49ers reporter Matt Maiocco visited KNBR radio this week and reminded fans on the timeline of past franchise quarterback trades. And he also said he expects Niners quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to be granted the opportunity to talk to teams he’s willing to be traded to and a deal could be had in principle next week at the NFL Scouting Combine.

For those unaware, the Combine is sort of spring break for NFL executives, agents and coaches. They’re all in one city and, presumably, few players’ families and wives want to soak in Indianapolis in the dead of winter. Lots of deals get done there, as does a lot of drinking and carousing. (And sometimes that leads to the deals being finalized.)

Would the Bucs trade for Garoppolo? If his thumb is healthy, Joe thinks the Bucs would be interested, especially if they can renegotiate a contract with Jimmy GQ or creatively get the 49ers to eat some of his $27 million salary.

If there’s one winner of a QB who would deeply understand the extraordinary challenge of succeeding Tom Brady, it’s Garoppolo.

    Not gonna happen…

  2. BFFL Says:

If Jimmy isn’t good enough for the 49ers then why should he be good enough for Bucs?
You could say that about any trade.–Joe

  3. Marine Buc Says:

    Nope.

The 49ers are in worse cap shape than the Bucs – negative $6.7 million. I highly doubt they will volunteer to eat any of Jimmy G’s salary.

But they would probably be willing to trade him for nearly nothing. Probably a 4th round pick at this point.

  4. QB1 Says:

I’ll be happy when we get the QB1 slot filled. We need to move on to other pressing matters. Defense needs some play makers and we gotta sign Lenny and Godwin. LFG!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s quite obvious that SF decided to move on from Jimmy G when they drafted Trey Lance #3 last year…..no surprise…

As far as Jimmy G & the Bucs….I can see many suitors for him including WTF, Panthers, Saints, Denver, Colts, Steelers & others….

We could land him….hope we don’t invest much if we do…

  6. fern Says:

No arm at all. No deep ball

  7. Niles Says:

    “Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yeah but none other than Joe Montana said recently that Trey Lance is NOT ready.

“I don’t think Trey’s ready to play yet, myself, and after talking to some of the players.”

  8. HC Grover Says:

Fine. I do not care anymore who the QB is.

  9. New England Patriots Fan Says:

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Washington Commanders (+300) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+350) are the two odds favorites to land Watson in 2022.

  10. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Washington wants Wilson first and Wilson already scrubbed social media of Seahawks

  11. New England Patriots Fan Says:

And posted a childhood photo of his time in the Washington area playing football.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

Are we going to change the whole offense to suit Garappollos game manager skillset?

One bonus with Garappollo, he cant sling the ball so we wont need Chris Godwin as much.

The idea of Bruce salivating to acquire Jimmy G is mindnumbing to me. I give it about the same chance as the Teddy Bridgewater rumors of last year

  13. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Save the draft picks and sign a decent vet then go with Gabbert and Trask. Three years in Arians offense has to mean something and hopefully spending 2 years being close with Brady on the field will rub off on him and Trask. We have to rebuild some and reload some. If we can’t resign Lenny and Godwin who our qb is won’t matter we won’t sniff the Superbowl.

  14. Ash Says:

Jimmy doesn’t throw the ball deep there is no way I see this happening so silly Joe seems to be gushing over Jimmy in this way.

  15. Oneilbuc Says:

Can yall just admit that BA ain’t no quarterback guru or whisper? Just admit that the media and who ever started calling him that was worng? We have a quarterback who was number one in ever stat in college and plus he sat for a year and yet BA is still looking for a veteran quarterback . He has the opportunity to show people he’s a quarterback whisper and he afraid to prove it Maybe Jamies wasn’t the problem like every one said he was??

  16. Ben green Says:

Jimmy’s first priority is getting paid. He stayed with a team that didn’t really want him, because he wouldn’t take a pay cut to go back to NE.. His trade value is really a matter of availability, not ability. Maybe someone gives them a 2 and SF eats some of that money. If a team is paying his full salary, no more than a 4th

  17. FloridaTransplant89 Says:

Go after Wentz. Seriously! Fans hate him because of the narrative spun around him, but this kid can ball. Bucs have the talent. Especially at oline, receiver, and in the defense. Bucs are still super bowl contenders with Wentz.

  18. Ben green Says:

Oneilbuc, Ben agrees wholeheartedly. An organization that would turn a young QB over to BA, is stupid. Aside from Carson Palmer (who already knew how to play QB) what are BAs claims to fame as a QB whisperer, Peyton Manning, that pervert and BA friend little big ben? If he ever was a good coach, that’s all been washed away by an ammonia brain, and cognitive decline. Ben still can’t believe they didn’t retire him, and promote leftwich

  19. Buc king Says:

hope why hasn’t the bucs signed godwin or any of the bigger name’s that could be leaving the team….Will they be letting players test the market?

  20. Buc king Says:

    Garoppolo? LOL!

He’s the 2022 version of Joe Flacco.

    No thanks.

    ——–

Same here, it’s really insane with MY track record, which is easily verified with a google search or two, that Licht isn’t offering me a 6-figure consulting job. I feel your pain.

  25. Robertg Says:

Come on, guys got a arm like Brees. Can’t throw past 20yrds. If they are gonna trade for a QB, at least get one that fits the system. Carr fits

  26. Marine Buc Says:

For the fans who want to trade for R. Wilson -this is what Chicago offered last year before they were rejected by Seattle

“In March of the last offseason, it was revealed the Bears offered three first-round picks, a third-round pick, and two starting players in order to receive Wilson.”

Three first round picks. One third round pick. Two starters.

    And Seattle said “No thanks”…

Plus – Chicago draft position last year was much better than the Bucs #27 pick.

  27. Listnfrmafar Says:

What do you all mean, BA is the QB whisperer, look what he did with Brady the last two years. Who is to say he can’t do it with Jimmy G? Bucs fans need not worry with BA’s excessive experience developing rookie QB’s into stars. Succo Arians has your back.

  28. Onetrickpony Says:

Don’t sound like a Bruce Arians quarterback with a noodle arm the way he likes to go for the biscuit down field. If they go for him it would surprise me

  29. Wild Bill Says:

Nobody trades a starter level qb for chump change. A decent qb will cost the Bucs big time. Even the Bucs draft picks are relatively late rounds. The Bucs dug themselves a deep hole when they never recruited a decent backup for Brady day one. Arians decision to stick with Gabbert from early on was dumb from the get go. Even a relatively minor injury to Brady prior to the Super Bowl would have been a disaster back then. Going cheap with a career bench sitter back then leaves the Bucs where they are now. Up sheetz creek.

  30. Listnfrmafar Says:

Wildbill, same thing happened to Belichick, asleep at the wheel.

  31. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I will be shocked if the Bucs trade for a QB.
I think all this so called “interest” in a veteran QB is a bunch of BS, designed to keep people buying tickets.
However, it has been good for Joe, and IMHO that is the best thing to come out of all this stuff.

I think Gabbert will start, backed up by Trask, when the season opens.

  32. Crickett Baker Says:

I can’t believe so many put down the best coach the Bucs have ever had. Do you know Arians has been in more playoff games than Dungy and Gruden COMBINED? How can you possibly continue to diss this great coach?

  33. ModHairKen Says:

No. No. No. Sit patiently and wait. Either TB comes back or let Gabbert and Trask take their shots.

  34. A Real American Says:

I think Gabbert will surprise people and have a great season.

  35. A Real American Says:

    Remember:
Blaine does not cry, any Blaine tears, he’s back for revenge (against the h8terz) and it’s so very clear

  36. cmurda Says:

Hell no to Jimmy G. Gabbert is a bad idea too but is better than Jimmy G and that isn’t saying much because Gabbert is still nothing more than backup material

  37. Listnfrmafar Says:

Cricket, 6 of those playoff games came at the hand of Brady. The best coach THE BUCS ever had. Doesn’t say much for a losing franchise.

  38. Adrnagy Says:

The difference in gabbertt is now older. Two years behind brady and in a talented good team.
Not sure where is at come game time mentally and skills to last 17 games under center.

  39. SB Says:

Trask will end up being a better QB than Jimmy DQ.

  40. Craig Says:

With the USFL draft last week, there are no inexpensive QB in the system. If the Bucs want field a good team this year, their option is Trask. He might be a star in his first year, recovering from the Gabbert screw.

He might not, though I am on the positive side, it can be fixed in 2923. Build it and the players will come

  41. tnikkichristy@gmail.com Says:

You folks are complete idiots. Yes they can make the offense fit JG’s strengths. Why not? They essentially can strengthen the run game through the draft, they have a great slot receiver in Godwin. The defense will mostly improve with the return of a young secondary and the addition of an outside corner.

  42. tnikkichristy@gmail.com Says:

    I see JG coming here.

  43. Ben green Says:

Listnfrmafar, Bill had Brady’s replacement in place. The owner made him trade said replacement. That’s not asleep at the wheel, that’s having the rug pulled out from underneath. Not saying Bill’s plan was right or wrong, but he did have a plan

  44. BUCman Says:

Personally I have faith in Trask to be our future and I believe that Arians & Licht do as well! Bringing back Gabbert as a placeholder and mentor for Trask is the smart play and I believe that is their plan. They are high on Trask but don’t want to rush his development. Gabbert allows them to ease him into a starting role when he’s ready. We don’t need to trade away all our top draft picks or pay an insane amount for a QB until we see what Trask can do. The Glazer’s won’t sign off on sleezy Watson. Wilson is highly unlikely for several reasons. And the team doesn’t view Garoppolo, Wentz, or any of the soon to be free agents as an upgrade. This option also leaves the door cracked for Brady if he were to get the itch to play again (even though the chance is small). We, as true Bucs fans should embrace this plan and have patients while we go through the growing pains of developing our young rookie QB. If this plan is successful we will have our starter for the next decade. It’s foolish to think we can somehow just find a Hall of fame QB every other year that somehow falls into our lap. That’s not a plan, that’s living on a prayer. Brady was an aberration.

  45. BUCman Says:

All the Gabbert talk is their way of keeping the attention, pressure and expectations off Trask.

  46. Defense Rules Says:

BUCman … ‘All the Gabbert talk is their way of keeping the attention, pressure and expectations off Trask.’

Precisely. After all this time together, BA knows full well what he can expect from Gabbert. Would those expectations include a Super Bowl? Seriously doubt it. So why even bring Gabbert into the conversation if you’re BA? After all, Gabbert’s not even on our roster; Bucs are paying him nada right now. Keeping him in the starting QB conversation … IF he REALLY is in the starting QB conversation … merely inflates his ‘cost’ for the Bucs. Doesn’t seem like that’s something the Bucs would want to do.

Nah, I think BA is just ‘setting the table’ right now, and as BUCman says, his approach keeps the pressure off of Trask. Bucs are surely though scouring the possible QB candidates & we’ll eventually probably add Gabbert plus 1 other to compete with Trask in preseason. But given our limited budget, I’m not expecting any flamboyant trades or signings. If Trask bubbles to the top in the competition, then awesome for us (even though this season may be a rocky ride). If not, then at least we know what we’ve got in him & can set about seeking a long-term QB solution in 2023. Better potential solutions there anyways.

  47. Wood1982 Says:

It’s interesting to hear how reasonable many fans are relative to their view that a young QB like Trask being developed slowly, mentored, and put in the best possible position to succeed before hand over the reins. Shouldn’t that be the case with all young QB’s. Especially ones coming to bad teams???

I personally don’t subscribe to the logic that just because a QB is drafted #1 or #2 overall that means you should throw all the expectations on them to turn a franchise around. It’s unrealistic, and creates instant acrimony between the player and the fans when it doesn’t (and it usually doesn’t) happen. Remember, you got that high draft pick because you had a horrible record or a bad team.

Look at how things played out the last time we drafted a QB that high. Big talent, but needed to mature, High expectations, bad team, coaching changes, bad defense, no running game, poor special teams. A recipe for disaster.

Where would our team be if organization and fan base took the “Trask Approach” with the previous QB? I wonder…..

  48. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

I still think (maybe wishfully) that TB returns & if not go with Gabbert & Trask. One draft so called expert believes the Bucs will draft a QB #1. What a fool. Any one of us here could draw up the Bucs draft as good or better than these so called experts.

  49. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

if you are unable to get Wilson , it is Trask and Bucs will be back in playoffs with Trask.

  50. Buc it. It’s over Says:

Why trade for a mediocre QB? Sign Gabbert or play Trask and let the hard reboot begin. Better QBs in the next draft.

  51. Listnfrmafar Says:

    Jimmy G has been to 3 SB’s and played in two. Roger’s can’t say that. Wilson 1-1 SB’s, Roger’s 1-0, Mahomes 1-1, Garapolo 1-2, Carr 0 , Dalton-0, Trubinsky-0, Watson-0, Allen-0, Hebert-0. He has far more experience than most.

  52. Listnfrmafar Says:

My bad Garapolo 1-1 2 SB’s. Both his losses in the playoffs and SB were to the SB winners that season, KC & Rams.

  53. ChiBuc Says:

Wood1982: “It’s interesting to hear how reasonable many fans are relative to their view that a young QB like Trask being developed slowly, mentored, and put in the best possible position to succeed before hand over the reins. In practice and/or 1982, not so much in 2022. I like your theory, except they’re gone in 4 yrs, so you gotta test the product, not just coach them up for another team. Sometimes ojt is the best teacher. Also, plenty examples of yr 2 guys taking the reins and succeeding

  54. Buc1987 Says:

List and Ben (both Patriot fans) need to get a life and leave our Bucs FAN site.

    Brady’s gone….go away.

  55. IrishTony Says:

Ok they may have to alter the offensive scheme to fit Jimmy G’s strengths but I believe they can win with him. They have a great slot receiver (to franchise tag) just need to add another RB in the draft and get a bit more run heavy. So effin what? The defense is good and can be top 10 with the addition of another pass rusher and veteran cb. They’ll probably add another cb in the draft as well.I honestly see the Jimmy G thing happening. My only concern is the injury thing which is concerning.

  56. IrishTony Says:

Oh and this o-line is better than Frisco’s.

  57. IrishTony Says:

Have any of you actually watched Gaebbert start? He tends to be erratic I don’t think the receivers trust him. Jimmy G is a proven commodity. Is he great but neither was Brad Johnson.

  58. Listnfrmafar Says:

Those evaluating Jimmy G, keep in mind Shannahans is focused around the run and a lot of motion & play action short stuff, that doesn’t mean JG can’t throw long. His biggest issue is health, he can’t make a full season without getting injured.

Buc1987, obviously you have small man’s disease and just like to bark like a poodle. No one is listening so why risk carpal tunnel might as well just stop typing.

  59. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Jimmy G only started and played in 5 football games for the 49ers in 2017, missing 11 games.

Jimmy G only started and played in 3 football games for the 49ers in 2018, missing 13 games.

Jimmy G started and played in all 16 regular season football games for the 49ers in 2019.

Jimmy G started and played in 6 football games for the 49ers in 2020, missing 10 games.

Jimmy G missed started and played in 15 football games for the 49ers in 2021, missing two games.

In the 5 seasons that Jimmy G played for the 49ers these are his games played vs games not played stats:

    Games played = 45

    Games not played = 36

The book is out on Jimmy G. He is not durable. Durability doesn’t improve as you age.

This data is a major red flag for any team about Jimmy G.

  60. Anonymous Says:

    Nope

  61. TampabayDJ82 Says:

So many of you sound like you know what is best for the Bucs , a NFL team that is run by PROFESSIONAL AND EXTREMELY qualified people. Stop acting like you know what is the best option !! I don’t care about people saying they would like to have a certain QB , but for the one’s who think they know better than J.L. or BA your just crazy. Go Bucs

  62. WalkdaPlank Says:

“If there’s one winner of a QB who would deeply understand the extraordinary challenge of succeeding Tom Brady, it’s Garoppolo.“

Jimmy Garbage couldn’t even convince the guys who drafted him that he could replace Brady. He is one of the main reasons the 49ers haven’t won a Super Bowl despite having one hell of a team.

But now, after abysmal numbers on the playoffs, the inability to carry his team but rather be carried by his team, and showcasing his lack of success when throwing more than 20 yards, some delusional Bucs fans think he is the answer in Tampa Bay. For a King’s ransom no less.

  63. Listnfrmafar Says:

Walkdaplank, in 2019 KC was by far the best team in the league who narrowly beat the 9ers in the SB. Jimmy G. this year lost to the same team Brady and the Bucs did, grant it 49ers didn’t have Bowles as the Rams 12th man. He can win, he’s just brittle. The 49ers will take a big step backwards this season if they are relying on Lance.
