Mike Evans Wants A Quarterback Real Soon

February 17th, 2022

Waiting on a quarterback.

A week from Monday, the combine begins in chilly downtown Indianapolis. The football world will converge on the city like locusts and a week later will all be gone.

It’s basically football’s version of a winter carnival, replete with steaks, super hot and sweet cocktail sauce and shrimp, several late-night trips to Steak ‘n Shake, loads and loads and loads of gossip, on and off-the-record quotes and jars of Advil with gallons of coffee for bleary-eyed football folks — and those who cover bleary-eyed football folks trying to function after short nights filled with alcohol.

When Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians head back to Tampa, they should know (if they don’t already) their plan for who the Bucs’ starting quarterback will be for 2022.

Mike Evans hopes he’s the first one to get a text on who that is.

In a recent sitdown with Matt Harmon of Yahoo! Evans confessed he has zero idea what the Bucs will do for a quarterback this fall. But he wants to know damn soon. Daylight is burning.

“I don’t know if we’re staying in-house or going for a free agent,” Evans said. “I really don’t know what we’re going to do. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon so I can start putting in some work with whoever it might be.”

Joe likes that attitude and it is also an attitude that makes Evans elite.

Joe remembers a couple of years ago Evans was asked about working out with quarterbacks. He noted that quarterbacks are generally more eager to work out than receivers. Why is that?

Evans said that’s because it is the receiver who does all the running, not the quarterback.

    Please not Gabbert

  2. Tbbucs3 Says:

Evans obviously doesn’t want to the Bucs to stay in house.

  3. zzbuc Says:

I rather go gabbert/trask, than overpay….QB’s market is going to be expensive…..

  4. DBS Says:

Gabbert if we want a losing season. But I don’t think the Glazer’s have that in mind.

  5. Marine Buc Says:

Is this a passive aggressive way of asking for a trade?

Interesting… He obviously is not a big fan of the Gabbert/Trask plan…

    LOL!

  6. Bqen green Says:

This is a playoff team. With the right QB, a deep playoff team. They’re going to lose some guys, just the nature of the business. Evans has now played with the best. A crappy QB is going to make him insane

  7. Hawk Says:

Trask is the only “in house” QB right now, so it might be a good idea for the two of them to get together for a little throw-and-catch. It couldn’t hurt either one of them.

  8. RajBucsFan Says:

You can’t be in the resign Godwin crowd and also the mediocre QB (Gabbert/Trask/JimmyG/Bridgewater) crowd. It makes no sense to pay 2 WRs a combined $40M and not have a QB who can get them the ball. Personally think the Bucs should just go all in on offense. Get a QB, resign Cappa/Godwin/Fournette then draft defense

  9. Jeff Says:

Mike had the hottest girl and he can’t go back to normies now.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

Glazers know the wait list for season tickets will evaporate if they don’t find an answer at QB. Gabbert isn’t going to cut it from a marketing standpoint, nor is Trask. Not to say they can’t get the job done on the field, but from a marketing perspective, fans aren’t going to renew with the same zealous as they did with Brady taking the field.

  11. Niles Says:

Joe keeps missing this interview with Mike Evans posted on the NFL website just a few days ago:

“I know Kyle is a really talented guy. He has really great arm talent, and he’s a student of the game.” – Mike Evans

  12. Niles Says:

“Bobby M. Says: Fans aren’t going to renew with the same zealous as they did with Brady taking the field.”

Brady’s gone. And he ain’t coming back.

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Niles

To me ME13’s comments are similar to what you would say about an ugly prom date…

She is NICE and FUNNY with a wonderful PERSONALITY.

    LOL…

  14. Niles Says:

    @Marine

“He has really great arm talent.” You must date guys. LOL.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    ^^^

    HAHAHAHA!!!

    Exactly… lol.

  16. Stu Says:

A real leader would call Trask and “put in some work” with him…until the alternative is found…stop bellyaching thru the press ME…SMH

  17. Listnfrmafar Says:

Ya Mike, you have to know Licht and BA have NO idea who their QB is. It took forever for Evan’s to play with a real elite QB, now thanks to BA & his cronies back to subpar QB’s and back to being overlooked year after year for the probowl. Poor bastard, Mikey you don’t deserve the Bucs, move on.

  18. Gerinda Says:

We are waiting as well! Hopefully soon! Come on Buccaneers get yourself together! Call Brady to be sure hes done, if not go get the team a quarterback!

  19. Buczilla Says:

I’m with Evans and I would like to know too, although I have to admit that the torture and speculation is crazy fun.

  20. HC Grover Says:

I have never understood why Trask is so bad. Does he miss the receivers? Throw at the wrong one? What exactly is his problem? Not fast enough?

  21. Tye Says:

Me too, Mike Evans, Me too!
So tired of hearing ridiculous scenarios and every QB somehow linked to the Bucs.

  22. Crickett Baker Says:

Why is my comment not being put up?

  23. allbuccedup Says:

Go with Trask/Gabbert the 2023 draft will have a better selection at QB and the QB free agency is definitely a lot better. Go with what you have then make the QB decision then. Who knows maybe Brady comes back for one more shot.

  24. steele Says:

Evans and seemingly the entire team is in the dark. (Don’t these guys have final meetings and conversations post-season?)

Gabbert. How do we know with such certainty that Gabbert is a likely signing? Just because he’s a BA favorite? I think it depends on what else is available. So we shouldn’t assume him yet.

Trask. HCGrover, we are all analyzing Trask and it’s frustrating. He’s frustrating. Equal parts good and awful, but not enough good to merit confidence. Mechanics, decisions, all a mixed bag. Unless his super secret training program with Christensen has made him different.

  25. steele Says:

Bqen, is this team really a deep playoff team? We can’t know that until the free agency and contract issues are sorted out. There just doesn’t look like there is a lot of capital to work with.

  26. cmurda Says:

No way Marine regarding Evans wanting a trade. Evans is a loyal stud. He is anxious as we all are about the next QB but it may take patience. It does seem like he doesn’t believe the QB that will lead this team next year is on the roster. Trask may get there but we are in win now mode. Time to reload with a solid veteran QB not named Garoppolo or Cousins or any of the other barely above average QB’s.

  27. Craig Says:

I would rather hear about the signing of some of our free agents. What are the priorities, and so on.

Right now, we are not even a playoff team, much less a Stupor Bowl team.

Putting together a solid team will take more money than the Bucs have, so a good draft is also important.

Trask will end up with the QB job, though probably not start with it. If he can’t make, find a QB for the 2023 season. Trask has more potential than any of the names currently offered, and his playing status is all green.

Rebuild this year and see what was drafted last season.

  28. Tony Says:

Prerty sad if we already pushed Brady out after two years.

  29. Defense Rules Says:

‘Evans said that’s because it is the receiver who does all the running, not the quarterback’.

    Makes perfect sense to me.

@HC Grover … ‘I have never understood why Trask is so bad.’

In reality he’s not; nothing but speculation since he’s never taken a single snap in a real NFL game. All the negative commenters have zero idea how well Kyle Trask would perform in a real game, behind our excellent OLine, throwing to receivers like Tom Brady had (ME13, Godwin, AB, Gronk, Fournette, etc). Not saying at all that we’ll have those this year, but fans should reserve judgment until they see him operate with the #1’s under fire.

A lot of how well he does will also depend on how BA & BL use him. Winston did quite well in terms of passing yardage his freshman (and only) year in BA’s system, but he ended with a 7-9 record because of other ‘issues’. PERHAPS if he’d been used differently we MIGHT have ended up with a better record. Just not a good fit at the time I guess. Hopefully BA & BL have matured a bit since that 1st year with the Bucs.

  30. Alan Mullins Says:

Got to start Trask we drafted him so when Tom’s gone he can take over learning behind Tom was the best thing you could have done for a year so put the kid out there and let him win some games if that don’t work we’ll go from there can’t spend the second round draft on a quarterback and not playing wishing one hand s*** in the other see which one feels first so quit wishing Tom Brady would come back start trash

  31. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Brady elite work ethic running off on Young M1K3 I see

  32. Big pirate Says:

Start working with trask. He’s eventually going to throw passes to you

  33. Tom Sumner Says:

    JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY GGGGGGGGGGGG

  34. Evc Says:

    Lot of face fans smfgdh

  35. Swampbuc Says:

Mike, phone your boy Brady and find out what the real deal is. Maybe invite him out to hang with you. I’m sure by now he could use some space away from Hor- I mean Frau Kommandant Bundchen, Pferdegesicht.

  36. SufferingSince76 Says:

I’m sorry, Swampbuc but Gisele is hardly a Pferdegesicht. You can be mad she pressured Tom to quit, but don’t get verruckt.

  37. Dan Williamson Says:

If we can keep our team together Brady will be back. Just a sense that Adam scheffler forced Tom into a decision he wasnt yet decided on.Forced his his hand.Believe he was waiting to see what would be left of the Bucs.God dang Adam Sheffler
    Hate that cocky jerk.

  38. Swampbuc Says:

I’m worried that Mike is challenging the organization like this. He should trust his coaching staff. Injuries and the better team caused the Bucs to lose and Brady retired because he knew he needed to do more at home, be more supportive of the family, even though he just led the league in every passing category. It’s time. His 42 year old wife has a lot more modeling to do because there is a lot ,ore demand for 42 year old models than 22 year old models, and she’s been sacrificing everything for Tom! It’s time Tom toe the line, after all, he’s done nothing at home. Good for Tom to change all that, vacuum the living room, wear an apron. He’ll love it.

Meanwhile, Tebow will help clean up this Bucs culture that is prone to let football players of ill repute in. So what if they play well? We need to be all about values.

    Tim Tebow for quarterback!

    YAY!!!!!

  39. Hodad Says:

Gabbert has four years in this offense, he was Brady’s #2 the past two seasons. Gabbert’s first 8 years in the league he had 8 different O.C.’s, it’s hard to have success that way. This could be his time. He’s with a good team in a system he knows like the back of his hand. He’s only 32 6’5″ 235, can run, and has a big arm. Arains is going to give his boy a shot, I can see why, and am on board with it. Be a great story if Gabbert can revive his career, and becomes the answer in T.B..
