Lovie Smith’s Return

February 7th, 2022

Plugged-in Jay Glazer said it, so Joe’s taking it to the bank.

Ousted Bucs head coach Lovie Smith (2014-2015) is about to become head coach of the Houston Texans.

What a wild call in Houston after their creepy-quarterback mess and a 2021 season that saw them dump their head coach after Lovie dumped Vernon Hargreaves midseason.

The Texans interviewed weepy, career-loser quarterback Josh McCown for their head coaching gig, the guy Lovie brought in back in 2014 to lead Tampa Bay to the Super Bowl. Joe suspects that McCown will now be working for Lovie as offensive coordinator or in some other capacity.

Joe’s amazed by Lovie’s NFL revival. After faltering badly late in the 2012 season with the Bears, he drove the Bucs further into the toilet after tanking to close the 2014 season, and then he bombed at the University of Illinois. And here he is for Round 3 as an NFL head coach at 63 years old.

Joe’s wondering of Mike “Toast” Jenkins will be an assistant cornerbacks coach? Could Lovie’s hiring pull Chris Conte out of retirement? Will Jameis Winston return in Texas?

Sadly, the Bucs do not play the AFC South next season.

  1. Mike Says:

Yeah, that is surprising. I think I’d hire Bowles before I hired Lovie Smith.

  2. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Lovie is an excellent hire if the goal is to accumulate high draft picks. Do not underestimate Lovie’s contributions to our current roster.

  3. Bucs Win Says:

AFC South high? I wonder if they’ll be Tennessee ready.

  4. kyle Says:

Great for Lovie. How in the hell would a billion dollar organization hire this guy? Amazing??? That gives me hope that I may be able to run Apple one day soon!

  5. kyle Says:

hopefully the texans will be Tennessee ready next year!

  6. Upstate NY BUC Says:

That just shows how lousy are defense was against Rams, that has to be an insult to Bowles!!! Not even an interview for the Texans, lord help us in 2022.

  7. SKBucsFan Says:

Maybe the Texans have a plan to tank over the next two seasons to build up their draft position. Lovie is their man then!
    C’mon Saints. Interview Todd Bowles.

  8. Im not tired anymore we Super Bowl Champs!! Says:

    Simple as that! Haha

  9. Biff Barker Says:

Interesting landing spot for Winston. Good Luck Lovie. Now you’ll need to tank again next season for another 1st pick to replace your last first overall pick.

  10. Oneilbuc Says:

Lovie built the bears to a superbowl contender and people constantly hate on him !! Greg Shaino destroyed the bucs defense and Lovie got blamed for setting the bucs back !! Lovie was the only coach who had a real idea about developing Jamies.

  11. Cobraboy Says:

Can you short the Texans in Vegas?

What a horrible coach Lovie Smith was, even at UI.

Expect to see Jameis Winston under center in Houston.

My nephew in Houston is retching with stomach spasms over the news of Lovie Smith.

  12. University of Seffner Says:

I can’t help but laugh reading this. Poor Texans fans…

  13. Marine Buc Says:

So he was fired from Tampa for not winning enough. Went down a level and coached at Illinois and was fired again for not winning enough. Now he gets a another head coaching job in the NFL…

    Talk about failing upwards.

  14. BA4President Says:

I don’t understand how he could be selected as Head Coach over Todd Bowles, Leftwich, Flores, and I’m sure yaw could name others. I just don’t get it.

Lovie’s Defensive Rankings (His Past 3 NFL Seasons):

    –Yards Per Offensive Play–
    2014 – 22nd (Buccaneers)
    2015 – 8th (Buccaneers)
    2021 – 30th (Texans)

    –Points Allowed–
    2014 – 25th (Buccaneers)
    2015 – 26th (Buccaneers)
    2021 – 27th (Texans)

    Simple as that! Haha

Hahahahaha, that’s right up there with “Tennessee ready”

  16. Fun guy Says:

    That is just insane.

  17. Natron Says:

Lovie Smith is a walkin disaster he’s a demolition man! Forget the Bears Hoston management, look at his Bucs tenure, also his knock-about failure at U of Illinois My guess is this is Rooney rule interview, but stranger things have happened! Let the buyer beware

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Lovie doesn’t like swearing so I guess he won’t approve of Deshaun Watson’s behavior…..

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

Have you ever heard the saying that the good coaches scheme to the strengths of their players? Lovie cut Darrelle Revis, a 7 time Pro Bowl player, because he “didn’t fit his system”. Comical, simple as that.

  20. Bobby M. Says:

Lovie understands the business as well as reality….he’s not going to the HOF. For the right price he’ll execute tanking like a pro. Probably will bring in Winston, let him drop by back 30+ times per game, play zone defense with no emphasis on tackling and you’ll be primed to rebuild after a Watson trade.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

Another great Lovie story: He said that his defensive “system” didn’t work well in college because teams ran too many 3-receiver sets. I believe there are defenses out there that can scheme for this, but it was too much for Lovie.

  22. Tye Says:

keeping this vicious cycle alive and well of ‘minorities’ struggle to get HC jobs by the hiring of them that continues to fail and deeply solidify societies idea that they can not reach the level of success as their counter peers instead of quality ‘minority’ coaches who would have the chance to change peoples ideology and in the future give others a greater chance!

  23. desanova Says:

    No words.

  24. sasquatch Says:

They’re trying to fail to rebuild with higher draft picks and Lovie is the patsy. That’s the only explanation.

  25. Aceofaerospace Says:

With Lovie in charge, we could probably get Deshaun Watson for a long snapper now.

  26. WalkdaPlank Says:

Lovie “I didn’t want to put more points on the board” Smith

Real quote from his time with the Bucs!

  27. Natron Says:

I hear you Tye, but people can run out of chances no matter what color they are, Lovie is like a cat with 9 lives at this point

  28. zzbucs Says:

United States of America, land of oppotunities……My God, what a generous league NFL has become….Worst than the NBA….

  29. SKBucsFan Says:

You may be right Ace. But they didn’t totally lose their mind and make Lovie the GM as well.

  30. uhmmm Says:

    LOL

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

Don’t laugh to quick. Karma has its ways. Ole Lovie Dubbie might yet still surprise. Strange stuff happens in this life…everyday.

  32. DrunkInYbor Says:

Yeah good luck with that lol. What’s his record without Devin Hester again.. yikes

  33. Pancake block Says:

Insert “J. Jonah Jameson” laugh GIF

  34. T REX Says:

    Awful hire.

Lovie was on auto pilot here…geez

How can anyone fall for that gravy train group of his friends and family?

    Garbage coach

  35. Leighroy Says:

The Texans are tanking, this makes it clear it’s an open secret. So they could be like the Dolphins and pay a good coach a bonus per game to tank (allegedly) or pay a bad coach no bonus to simply do what he does (suck). Which would you chose?

  36. jvato24 Says:

They want the top pick without asking the coach to tank… tada

  37. Swampbuc Says:

What a toxic dumpster fire the Texans have become. Brilliant job, Bill O’Brien and Cal McNair!!!

Just like the Bucs and Malcolm Glazer, Bob McNair was an excellent owner as far as building a competitive and winning team. When he died and his idiot son took over, just like the Glazerettes, the franchise became a toluene-soaked incendiary pit.

  38. Lars Tatersalad Says:

Imagine being the person responsible for Texans season ticket sales.

  39. Lamarcus Says:

Wow. Maybe Lovie is not as bad as we think. Maybe he is doing something right. Lovie Smith is still highly respected tho

  40. kyle Says:

lovie nepotism smith… i remember the great, mikal smith as the bucs defensive backs coach… i think we set the nfl record for passing yards allowed?

  41. Miller5252 Says:

Man, this is wild!!! With all the young coaches out there are the Texans wanting to dump another season for a good pick?!?! With the Dolphins and Browns in the news for tanking, it almost like the Texans think it’s a good idea and they won’t have to pay Lovie to lose games…. He does a good job on his own. It’s sad really…. The coach that stepped into the Raiders deserves a shot, a lot of possible good coordinators deserve a shot over Lovie! Give Raheem a chance again before Lovie.

  42. kyle Says:

lamarcus^^ look at the texans defensive stats last year. 31? he also, ruined illinois football…

  43. mark2001 Says:

Lovie as a position coach or assistant to the defensive coordinator? I might be alright with that. But I’ve been watching him HC coach through the Bears era, here and U of I. And frankly, I don’t think he has the vision, style, leadership or whatever skill it takes to be a good HC.

  44. Swampbuc Says:

Cully was/is a good head coach. Him getting any wins out of that cesspool of a team is a minor miracle. And he got fired after one year.

And this arrogant failure is his replacement! Bwaaahahahaaa.

Oneilsuck — you are really a complete and utter idiot if you think Lovie was somehow good for the Bucs. Since 2006 (that’s 16 years ago), the man has done nothing but wreck teams and fail. Lovie was the only one who knew how to devvelop Jameis? Really?

He was fired so that Koetter could develop Jameis, and Jameis had his best years (as mediocre as they were) under Koetter. Those are facts.

But believe your own personal truths so that you feel better at night when snuggling your Lovie doll.

  45. catcard202 Says:

Looks to me like the NFL is pushing a few organizations to hire black HC’s before Brian Flores’ suit goes forward…

Just seems funny to me that before Flores’ went public, there was ZERO minority HC hires made this cycle…Then the law suit became public & in response the NFL sent out a scolding internal memo to all 32 teams….after that memo??? Miami goes & hires Mike McDaniel from SF (multi-racial), while HOU & NO are now targeting Lovie Smith & Eric Bieniemy.

The timing just seems fishy to me & appears from afar that the NFL is trying to cover their ass in advance of the Flores suit litigation….Not that these guys aren’t fully qualified for the positions. Quite frankly, there should be hella more minority HC’s / FO types already in positions of power…I mean, it’s 2022 not 1964!!!

I seriously doubt we see real systemic change in the NFL until there are at min 2 Black Ownership Groups running franchises.

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

Here’s what I don’t get. Even if the plan was to tank the Texans for picks as some allude to, aren’t there other NEW coaches that could be hired that could do the same WITHOUT a record of losing?!
It’s akin to paying BMW money for a Yugo. You KNOW it’s garbage even if you put rims and trim on it!
This is a joke! The NFL should NOT allow this.

  47. Jerseybuc Says:

Lovie been foolin people for years. Can’t wait to see him look hopelessly skyward as yet another loss befalls his team.

  48. FairMinded Says:

Man I have a history of defending or at least making a positive case for most head coaches we’ve had after Dungy and Chucky…but Lovie and his staff truly stunk. Unless there was more behind the scenes purposeful tanking going on to accumulate high draft picks, but I can only see the pre-Jameis season in that light. Good luck Texans you’re gonna need it

  49. Swampbuc Says:

It’s got to be a blatant tank move right as Flores is suing in part for his claim that he was being forced to tank and refused.

  50. rrsrq Says:

So Dirk is the OC and he replaces Lovie, Lovie is the DC and he replaces Culley, wow

  51. DoooshLaRue Says:

This has Goodell written all over it.
Gotta keep up appearances ya know.

On top of that, now watch racism and nepotism in action as Lovie Dovie brings in a “diverse” yet all the same group of coaches and family members.

The NFL is seriously becoming a PC machine and I think if it keeps up there’s going to be an exodus of fans.
Jamming BLM BS down our throats more and more with all the commercials trying to guilt all of us terrible White people is gonna bite them in the azz.

  52. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

I can’t believe of all the coaches out there the Texan’s pick him. Now we know why the Texans are so bad. They definitely have the worst decision makers in the league.

  53. Swampbuc Says:

Thomas – it’s even worse than you think. I’ve lived in H since 2009, LOL!

  54. DoooshLaRue Says:

Tank move + Goodell + PC + Nepotism/”Diversity” only hires.

I’m all warm and fuzzy now…… how about you?

  55. Scott Says:

what a joke lovie horrible head coach

  56. Oneilbuc Says:

Again Lovie built the bears and made them a superbowl contender. How many coaches can say that?? The only thing BA did was went got a bunch of veterans and 3 hall of famers and a pro bowl running back and was able to win . But what happened when it was time for him to be a coach he couldn’t do it. Now he suppose to be the quarterback guru and he’s looking for another vet because he knows he can’t develop a quarterback . BA is the most overrated coach in football. Say what you want to say about Lovie he took Ress Grossman the superbowl and he drafted Grossman !! BA couldn’t get Carson Palmer or Andrew Luck to the superbowl so what that tell you about BA ?? Stop haten on Lovie I’m glad to see a black coach get a job now it’s a bad one just like all the other black coaches get other then Tomlin but at least he got 1 . He’s more likely to be fired after 1 year because Houston is a bad team on both sides of ball . But this ain’t nothing but a PR move for the NFL!!

  57. DrunkInYbor Says:

Omg!! You made spit out a great beer laughing! Remember the great Mikal Smith hilarious. That has got to become a phrase we use regularly anytime nepotism is brought up.
    KYLE SAID
lovie nepotism smith… i remember the great, mikal smith as the bucs defensive backs coach… i think we set the nfl record for passing yards allowed?

  58. DaBux Says:

    Sold to them.

  59. Oxycodoms Says:

Lovie smith leading bears to superbowl was in the past. He doesnt have that same hunger

  60. Swampbuc Says:

    Bwaaahaahaaa Lovie Smith .

    Osqueelsucks –

    Lay off the peyote, man.

The Texans had Culley, a very good coach who happened to be black. Lovie is a horrible coach (look at his Bears, Bucs and Illinois records since 2009).

Or don’t because it will distort your sad little false reality.

And if BA were so bad, no one would want to play for him. You are drunk, stoned and stupid, son.

  61. stpetebucsfan Says:

This is part of the problem with trying to fix the obvious racial inequity in the league.

Lovie appears to be an affirmative action hire. And it’s not about race it’s about the lack of imagination and cowardice in the majority of NFL owners. They are afraid to risk their billions on an unknown quantity.

Too many coaches…white and now black get their shot because of the “comfort level” owners have with retreads of either race. But since there have been more white coaches that’s what really gives them the advantage.

Ten of the league’s 32 head coaches are the son/father/brother of a current or former coach. Of the 73 coaches that are related to another current or former coach, 55 of them are white.
IE…Inbreeding has a LOT to do with this problem…not just racism.

  62. Eckwood Says:

Worst head coach in the NFL has just been updated

  63. Natron Says:

Sick of hearing about Lovie’s success in Chicago, it’s a known fact that Lovie got Ron Rivera fired when his success as the DC threatened Lovie’s position as HC. Another strange one during Lovie’s tenure at U of Illinois, he brought in Bucs R.O.H. player Hardy Nickerson, only to have him resign for ‘health reasons’ within a year of hiring. Obviously, you have a malfunction Houston

  64. T REX Says:

    Lovie talks like forrest gump.

    It’s awful.

Head coach? Not even peewee worthy

  65. Swampbuc Says:

What player can really take a coaCh seriously who’s called “Lovie?”

Can’t help but thinking of Thurston Howell III’s wife.

  66. Buczilla Says:

Wow, I would have never thought that any other NFL franchise could even come close to the level of ineptitude displayed by our team during the Culverhouse era. LOL, it’s a toss up as to whether the Jaguars or Texans have had more wtf moments in recent years.

Maybe Lovie will hire Mike Smith as his defensive coordinator and Rich Kotite to run the offense? That trifecta would be an unstoppable juggernaut and nearly a sure bet to produce the worst team ever.

  67. BucsMinisiterFuller Says:

i wonder if Lovie got paid to tank the McCown season?
    Worst Bucs coach ever!

  68. Larry Bailey Says:

What a waste of time and money give the job to a black man worthy of the head coach label not a washed up old man
