The Bucs And Baker Mayfield

February 7th, 2022

Repeat interest?

The Bucs need a quarterback and there’s a very strong reason why it could be Browns QB Baker Mayfield.

Late in the 2018 season, Bucco Bruce Arians made it very clear that he wanted to step out of the CBS broadcast booth and was highly interested returning to be head coach of one team: the Cleveland Browns. “The only job I would consider,” Arians said.

Mayfield was the Browns’ quarterback at the time, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Why would Arians want to go to Cleveland if he didn’t like the quarterback? Arians was low on the CBS broadcasting totem pole that season and was assigned to a few Browns games. Arians later said publicly, after joining the Bucs, that his time watching Cleveland (practice, games and film) is what led him to want receiver Breshad Perriman on the Bucs. Perriman played the 2018 season for the Browns.

Mayfield turns 27 in April and has one more year left on his contract for $18.8 million. The Browns hold the No. 13 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and might be eager to dump Mayfield and accumulate draft picks for a trade up for a quarterback.

Last week, former Bucs QB Shaun King named Mayfield as one of three “shown-enough” quarterbacks that the Bucs could/should consider to replace Tom Brady.

Again, Joe comes back to Arians’ clear interest in working with Mayfield. It wasn’t phony, and now Mayfield has quality playoff experience under his belt.

    No thanks

  2. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Y’all are reaching now.

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jimmy G, Russel Wilson or Rodgers are the Bucs only hope for remaining as contenders.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Next it will be…..the Bucs and Bernie Kosar……

  5. Coburn Says:

I don’t watch a ton of browns games, especially this year, but wasn’t he pretty good last year? Did he take a step back this year?

  6. Marine Buc Says:

At least Mayfield won’t cost $37 million… I would like to know what the Browns want in return. Two first round picks? A first and a second?

Either way I still don’t see this happening. We need our draft picks because they are very cheap players. Our salary cap issues will only get worse if we spend $18 million on BM plus give away our future “cheap” players via a trade.

$18 million is about what Chris Godwin will cost…

  7. Juergensen Says:

LOL. Right after an article on Trask being “brittle” because he hurt a foot 5 years ago, Joe pushes a guy who just had surgery!
Hello! Where did you see Joe “push” Mayfield? Joe’s pointing out Arians’ past interest in a guy who might be available and affordable. –Joe

“19 days ago – Mayfield has undergone a successful procedure to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, Anthony Poisal of the Browns’ official site reports.”

    LMAO.

  8. MidAtlanticBucsFan Says:

LOL “Tbbucs3” thinks he’s got the Bucs all figured out. Bucs will remain contenders with or without Jimmy G, Wilson, or Rodgers, but the window is small.

  9. BA4President Says:

If BA and Licht think it can work, that’s good enough for me. BA wouldn’t be coaching if he didn’t think he had a shot at another ring, so I won’t be questioning BA and Licht’s determination to win in 2022.

  10. SKBucsFan Says:

    This is getting comical.
Maybe a better plan is to trade BA to Cleveland so he can work with the underwhelming Baker Mayfield.

  11. allbuccedup Says:

    Nope!

  12. Beeej Says:

Mayfield is an incredibly unlikable human being

  13. Marine Buc Says:

One thing I do appreciate about Baker Mayfield is he is a tough SOB…

The surgery he just had was from an injury that occurred in week #2 of the NFL season.

He played 15 weeks with a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

    I respect that.

  14. Juergensen Says:

Joe: “Hello! Where did you see Joe “push” Mayfield?”

    1. You wrote: “The Bucs need a quarterback and there’s a very strong reason why it could be Browns QB Baker Mayfield…. Again, Joe comes back to Arians’ clear interest in working with Mayfield. It wasn’t phony, and now Mayfield has quality playoff experience under his belt.”

    2. You failed to mention his labrum surgery just days ago, but devoted a whole article to Trask’s foot injury 5 years ago.

  15. K_bassuka Says:

Hell no! Don’t you put that evil on the Bucs!

Mayfield is an incredibly unlikable human being
    ——

Ha ha ha. He seems pretty sour and not clutch when you need him to be. Kinda like a poor mans Karen Rodgers.

  17. Bucsqb12 Says:

F No!! You are who you are by season 3 , Bucs have to have learned that by now

  18. RioDeJaneiroBucsFan Says:

Imho, Baker Mayfield will never be a top 5 QB in the NFL, but he’s good enough to lead a team like the Bucs (elite OL and WRs – assuming CG will be resigned) to a SB run.
Since Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson are out of reach, my ranking is:
    1) Derek Carr
    2) Baker Mayfield
    3) Jimmy G
    4) Kyle Trask

I simply don’t consider Jameis Winston an option.

But if JL and BA choose to go with an one-year bridge (nightmarish scenario), my preference would be Gardner Minshew, Nick Foles, Teddy Bridgewater and Blaine Gabbert.
Mitch Trubisky and Drew Lock are terrible.

  19. zzbucs Says:

    Pass…Big pass, no thx..

    Carr (very difficult)
    Cousins (Very Difficult)
    Jimmy G (Very difficult)
    Trask ……So I go with trask……

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

I’d go back to Jameis before I would Mayfield.

  21. Craig Says:

Cleveland is not going to let him go. He is the closest thing to a real QB that they have seen since the last millennium.

  22. Ashor Daniel Says:

NO no, Lets go after Vinny Testaverde too.

  23. VSyl Says:

    No thanks

  24. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

He’s still under contract. Anything about him, Wilson, Watson, Carr, Rogers, etc. is just interesting speculation until teams make it known they are looking to deal. Hell I’d say see if Fitz is willing to come back and compete with Trask. Fitz is not the answer, but he’s probably not getting resigned by Washington, he’s good accepting his role as a placeholder, he has experience with some of our WR’s and TE’s, he can win you a few games in spectacular fashion before complete implosion, and it would be entertaining to see if Brady sends out any alleged “they’re going with that mutherf—ker!?” messages 😂

  25. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Baker has that same Jameis Winston always trying to do too much issue. Baker is good, he’s just a bit reckless. Maybe that fits with the biscuit style? Or maybe it would just be another turnover show.
Not sure what was going on in that Cleveland locker room but OBJ went from being a washed up diva back to the old playmaking OBJ in a matter of a couple weeks. So that’s a concern as well.
My gut says Mayfield is a better option than Jimmy G, but still hard to see him as the new face of the franchise.

  26. Tacklebockwin Says:

Bucs need to go get Joe Flacco who is a unrestricted FA and would cost next to nothing salary wise. He can still play and would fit in our offense.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    Mayfield stinks.

I’d take even David Carr over him, not to mention Winston.

  28. Show Me the TDs Says:

His commercials would better with the pirate ship in the background. There’s always that.

  29. Swampbuc Says:

This is what we’ve come to.

Regardless of who it is, the Brady replacement can’t possibly come close.

Baker needs to get off the TV commercials and focus on football. Why the dude gets that much exposure for being one turd shy of sh!tty I’ll not understand.

But whatever. It’s him to Buttwater or Garrapoblow, or worse. Trashk. Yuk.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

You would get similar production from Trubisky for about $12 million less.

  31. Don Phillips Says:

Joe didn’t Arians take the Bucs Job because he thought he could make Winston a winner?

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s just time for BA to go now ! He drafted a quarterback in the second round who was number one at every quarterback stat in 2020 . He put up 46 points against ALABAMA and no team in 2020 that year could put up that many points against ALABAMA defense and you still looking for a veteran at quarterback? BA dose not want to coach anymore he just want to be on the side lines of a winning team and having a winning record without coaching. He’s Lazy now because of his age!! It’s time to move on from BA !!

  33. Joe Says:

Joe didn’t Arians take the Bucs Job because he thought he could make Winston a winner?

    In part.

  34. Buczilla Says:

We could do worse and I wouldn’t give up more than a second round pick for him. My first choice is still to go with Trask though to see if he has the goods.

  35. Swampbuc Says:

Considering the Bucs quarterback options for 2022…………

It’s time to keep drinking heavily until it’s all over.

  36. mark2001 Says:

Don… I understood that Jameis was a question mark. This organization had some pretty poor HC’s for years. The big contract for Jameis was on the horizon, and we needed to find out what he could do. If Arians could develop him to be a franchise guy, great. If not, time to move on. But we had to be sure it wasn’t lame coaching that was the problem. Arians, Moore, Christianson….top notch QB resumes. So go for it. There NEVER was a guarantee that Jameis would ever be a successful franchise QB. And Arians wasn’t hired to guarantee that.

  37. mark2001 Says:

Funny… I was alarmed when we hired Lovie and guys were drinkng the Kool Aid. So here is what I think where we are. We almost made the playoffs with an off and on suspended and injured turnover machine. This D will be no worse than that one was. So I expect that we will be OK…just probaby not Conference champion material or better. Weak division. So don’t start drinking heavily yet. We might just be OK….not Brady championship competing material. But not sub 500 material.

  38. kyle Says:

if you listen to the bucs talk, gabbert is going to get a chance. I think we regroup this year, take our lumps salary cap wise with a crazy schedule and get ready for 2023.

  39. tampabayallday Says:

    Winston 2.0

  40. adam from ny Says:

ya know, joe flacco is interesting…

he could be due for a one year revival if he still has the arm left in him…

just something to consider that comes relatively cheap…

yeah i know the last few years he’s been garbage playing on garbage teams…

but what if he has something left and you add him to a highly potent offense…

    just a thought

  41. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This is Chapter 2 in the book of Bad Ideas.

  42. adam from ny Says:

mayfield is very short and plays short

  43. Juergensen Says:

Did Brady resign because of the tough schedule next year? In other words even he knows the Bucs aren’t going to the Super Bolw next year, with him or without him?

  44. EEK Says:

not happening, Mayfield is a backup; goodness bring the pain if he is our starting qb…

  45. Buc4evr Says:

Jameis has probably learned to control his reckless turnovers under Payton. Mayfield has never learned and would be a disaster of epic proportions in Tampa. I would rather get Jameis back than sign Mayfield , and I really don’t want Jameis…

  46. SufferingSince76 Says:

Thanks, Tom. See how you’ve made everyone crazy?

  47. Pewter Power Says:

    😂😂😂

It is going to be a long off-season, this is crazy the super bowl still has to be played. Even Blaine Gabbert would be offended by having to compete for the starting job with that

  48. THOMAS PFALZ Says:

Actually Carr would be my first choice. (Well really Brady or Rodgers) We all know that won’t happen. Of the other QB’s available I’d take Mayfield even though he’s still under contract. Of the QB’s on our roster i would roll with Trask & save the money for our FA’s.

  49. David Says:

Full disclosure, I only read the headline but the answer is

    no, dear God, no

He is already on a team with good receivers a decent offense of line a great running game and a great defense… He can’t manage a game, he’s the reason Cleveland is not in the playoffs.

  50. Scott Says:

    mayfield should be backup somehere

  51. stpetebucsfan Says:

D.R. worked in a great musical reference on another thread so let me try.

Another blast from the past fits us right now…all this gripping over Trask before he’s ever thrown a pass…all this lovesickness because our GOAT is gone.
Here you go guys…perhaps it’s time to give Trask a chance if you believe the Isley Brothers and then Stephen Still. LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH!!!!

    If you’re down and confused
And you don’t remember who you’re talking to,
    Concentration slips away
Cause you’re QB is so far away

Well there’s a rose in the fisted glove
And the eagle flies with the dove
And if you can’t be with the QB you love
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with,
Love the one you’re with, Love the one you’re with.

  52. steele Says:

I mentioned Flacco a few days back. The question on him is whether he’s got much left. Why has he regressed, so much that he’s content to be a third stringer, and no team is clamoring for him anymore? He also had a neck injury.

  53. steele Says:

Mayfield is a big gamble. Multiple injuries, a bad season in which his game regressed. Bad decisions, nervous, mistakes. He’s always reminded me of a modestly improved Jeff Garcia, and Garcia sucked.

At his best, Mayfield can be a fun QB, but so is Ryan Fitmagic Connor McGregor. These are guys you would take on a short contract while grooming a rookie, with low expectations for the season.

  54. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’ve always thought that mayfield is a talented thrower. That being said, he seems more interested in making commercials than winning a championship. Does he have skills, yes….would I jump for joy if the Bucs pursued him….not so sure! I think he has been poorly coached, but is he ready to commit to winning, to being THE leader he would need to be….don’t know. All I do know is, after Brady, every other option ( short of Rogers) pales by comparison….sigh.

  55. steele Says:

Baker Mayfield is a lightning rod of controversy in Cleveland right now. Strong hate/love, lots of questions about coaching and discipline, and about his disastrous 2021 season.

Is he the perfect QB for a TB team that is controversial, full of questions about coaching and discipline, and about a pretty disastrous 2021 season?

You descend from Tom Brady to… Mayfield… if you’re ready to get really chippy, and play the heel.

  56. View from 132 Says:

    Mayfield? Hell no. Asshat.
