Deshaun Watson Interest Could Be A Smokescreen

February 13th, 2022

“Jason, you realize we just told all our sponsors squeaky clean role model Tom Brady would lead the team in 2022?”

Creepy, sleazy massage-loving quarterback Deshaun Watson and his bag full of legal issues have the Buccaneers’ full attention, per NFL.com.

Watson, the three-time Texans Pro Bowler who turns 27 in September and did not play this season, is due $35 million in 2022 and $37 million in 2023. Houston never activated Watson on their gameday roster this season because of “non-injury reasons/personal matters.”

(Yeah, 22 civil suits tied to coercive and lewd sexual behavior or alleged sexual assault have been known to sour a team on a player.)

Today’s NFL Network report said the Bucs are doing their “homework” on Watson. It’s unclear whether that’s anything more than quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen watching film.

Houston would demand a significant trade haul for Watson, Joe believes, if he’s acquired after the NFL determines Watson is in the clear and will not be suspended for his alleged naughty deeds. … Trading for Watson before that happens likely would be far less expensive but more risky for the team that gets him.

So are the Bucs serious about bringing in a quarterback with a dark cloud over his head, one who sat out a year and commands a massive salary?

Joe suspects Team Glazer would prefer to steer clear of Watson. The Bucs added a load of corporate sponsors over the past two years and those companies were very much sold on attaching their name to Tom Brady’s Bucs for 2022, not a team led by Watson and his Bob Kraft-like interests.

However, the more the Bucs can hype their interest in Watson, the more leverage they might have in cutting a deal for another quarterback on the trade block. Watson interest might also spark Brady to show his hand sooner.

If the Bucs trade for Watson, that’s great. They’d have an elite quarterback available and under contract for many years, as long as he doesn’t grope an Uber driver or violate other tenets of civilized society. They’d also lose their share of key 2022 free agents and good draft picks to build around Watson.

If Tom Brady really, really wants out and to play in San Francisco, then maybe the Bucs could just trade him for Jimmy Garoppolo and a third-round pick ASAP? Yes, that’s right, Jimmy GQ and a third-round pick.

Jimmy sucks. No. Not at any price would I trade TB for Jimmy.

    No.

  2. Lamarcus Says:

If we had good coaches, we would just draft and develop a QB. But no, we have to expect another team to give us their franchise Qb. What are we entitled now? What about this coaching staff that we’re praised all last year of being “The best coach in Bucs history” but needs an elite Qb? I mean what team doesn’t need that. We just need to move on no matter what happens

  3. tampabayallday Says:

Plz be one I really don’t want watson

  4. Steve In Mad Beach Says:

Jimmy falls apart in the clutch, not to mention that he physically falls apart every year! Damaged goods, no thanks.

If Brady wants to come back, fantastic let’s go get another trophy!

If not, get Watson and we’d have probably the best young QB in the NFC for the foreseeable future! Watson doesn’t have as sordid a past as Winston did, and he’s waaaaaaaaay better. Do it!!!

    Go Bucs!

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

This is almost as bad of a take/idea than bringing back Winny. Almost…

Pay a pile of loot and picks for someone this radioactive? No player on the planet is worth that considering the baggage/bad karma Watson brings.

  6. Adrnagy Says:

Brady will come back july , august. He will feel the tingly in his fingers by then ..

    Oh that’s funny…

  8. catcard202 Says:

Smokecreen is about right…There’s just no possible way the FO deals for Watson.
& it’s not because of the 22 massage parlor gold digger suits…It’s the 2yrs + $72M left on his deal.

  9. SB Says:

Even if we could afford him Darci would never allow it.

  10. View from 132 Says:

Creepy and sleazy? The man hasn’t been found guilty of anything and before these call girls started the accusations he was called nothing but class act. How many massages with extras do you allow Robert Kraft?

  12. WalkdaPlank Says:

Couldn’t get another QB article out without throwing in Jimmy Garbage at the end of it, huh?

    $27 mil

  13. Marine Buc Says:

As much as I would like to see Watson in pewter and red spinning the ball all over the place…

I just don’t see it happening.

At a time when the Bucs need cheap young players – giving away two first and two second round picks is not a good move.

Draft picks are very cheap players.

Plus – according to Overthecap dot com Watson is scheduled to make $40.4 million in 2022. $35 million plus $5.4 million bonus… I don’t see how we can handle that contract unless he agrees to a major restructuring.

Not to mention the legal issues Watson is dealing with.

  14. B.D Says:

  15. Richard Dickson Says:

Looks like the Colts might be trading or releasing Wentz to keep some of his salary off their books for 2022.

  16. #1bucsfan Says:

Jimmy wins games. He’s proven. I’m still not a fan of his. But if that’s what’s best for the team then do it. TB12 for jimmy G n kittle. I know it might sound crazy but TB12 still can play elite football at his age and prob for a few more years the way he takes care of his body. SF gets the greatest QB of all time and we get a stud n a half.

  17. Swampbuc Says:

To suggest Brady for Grapeblow and a 3rd rounder is a horrible deal. It would take a lot more loot than that.

SF is a poor trade destination because there isn’t a competent QB on their roster. If it had to be them, Licht will say Trey Lance, Kittle, and a first rounder. Gronk will go where Brady goes. Leave Grapeblow there.

More enticing – Vegas. McDaniel is now there, Brady loves him. Brady for Carr, Waller, and a first rounder. Thank you Mr. Licht.

Unfortunate that any of this might be necessary. First, Tom please come back to the Bucs. The Bowels of Todd will be reprimanded and corrected. In fact, he will report to you.

    Thanks, Todd.

  20. Bqen green Says:

Ben is close to a few people down in Houston. They say only two holdouts remain in the way of a settlement. That is expected to be resolved by training camp, possibly increasing his trade value. If any criminal cases were pending, we’d know because Grand juries leak, like an Iraqi navy boat. Talent like Watson’s is incredibly rare, a pocket passer who can run like the wind. Say what you will about his issues, several teams are willing to give up three first rounders.

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think this is all one big smoke screen. The more we look the worse Watson looks.

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

In all due fairness Kraft is not a sex offender, he was never offended when he was getting his monkey spanked. How can BA hate on AB yet show interest in Watson???

  23. catcard202 Says:

At the end of the process…I fully expect Licht/BA will end up w/ Gabbert, Griffin & Trask…& let Trask try to win the job.

  24. Hodad Says:

gabbert will start the season with Trask as the #2.

  25. Bqen green Says:

#1bucsfan, Jimmy G isn’t the answer. He wins because he’s not asked to do much, and has been on incredible teams. When he is asked to do more, he usually fails. The 9ers kicked the snot outta the chiefs for three quarters. The reason they lost was Jimmy G.
He also can’t stay healthy. Most of it is his fault. He has no self safety awareness. He blew out his knee, trying to get three extra yards on the sideline. He can’t understand the concept of living to fight another down. Belichick did want him back last year, but for 15mill, not 25. Jimmy refused to take the pay cut, and axed the trade. Compensation was already worked out. He decided to stay, and get paid, with a team that didn’t want him. Says something about the player.

  26. WalkdaPlank Says:

Ben might be onto something lol

People can cherry pick Jimmy Garbage’s Win/Loss record all they want. If you look past those numbers in ANY other direction you will find nothing but failure.

  29. allbuccedup Says:

Brady for Jimmy G. and a first rounder in 2023 minimum!

  30. New England Patriots Fan Says:

The central issue with settlement is he wants them to agree confidently while at the same time getting them to agree nothing happened. Original offer was 100k/person but some instances were much worse than others. They were close to settling last season but Watsons lawyers gave him bad advice thinking somehow they could settle for less or get everyone to admit to nothing occurring as they worried about reputational damage. Houston security team was aware of this massage stuff all along but when Watson got greedy they leaked news deliberately. Very similar to the Meyer hit job by Khan when he wouldn’t fly home and kept losing. Nearly all top coaches and stars are followed up in by NFL security and dirt files are kept for black mail or tactical leaks to validate firings etc. See Gruden this season, or after the AB incident, you had every unsavoury person come in to claim affairs, spreading c19 etc, which was all real but kept secret until the franchise needs to destroy a players rep once not needed or act bad.

  31. Listnfrmafar Says:

Joe, how about you change the narrative? The Brady he said she said is getting annoying and boring like your monitors. If Watson comes to Tampa BA owes AB a formal apology after he does his 50 Our Father’s and 100 Hail Mary’s.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Darcie Glazer would give him a massage and break his peni$……

  33. Rod Munch Says:

I haven’t followed his case super closely, but if I understand it correctly, the massage girls that claimed to be assaulted never contacted the police, and were recruited had to be recruited by a lawyer offering a big payday after Watson refused to settle with the original woman — again, meaning she went to cash in, not to the cops.

Have any legal charges even been filed, or is it solely a civil case?

Don’t lynch me if I’m wrong on my account, as I said I haven’t followed the story closely. Feel free to correct me.

  34. rrsrq Says:

After a year, this should be cleared up, guilty or not, suspended or not. Too much dragging of feet here

  35. Rod Munch Says:

If you can get Watson, you’re getting a QB for the next 10-years or more, and yes, you’ll be giving up a lot. But he’s a heck of a QB.

If you traded some huge package, you’re going to redo his deal before you’d spend so many resources on him, and you’re going to bring down his early cap hit. Also you’re putting in all type of clauses that keeps him from trolling backpage looking for help with his aching muscles. But, again, you could in this scenario, get Watson and keep many of your other guys. Maybe Cappa leaves, Gronk wouldn’t be back, but you’re likely keeping Jensen and certainly keeping Godwin.

Talking of resources, the Bucs don’t really have the ammo to get him if any of the rumors about the haul of picks is to be believe. The Bucs would likely need to give up 3 firsts and a young player, maybe Vita or White. While I wouldn’t want to give up either guy, if you have a chance to solve your QB spot for the next decade with a top guy, well, that’s the price you pay.

  36. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Watson likely did a bunch as borderline illegal things, but this will be settled very soon out of court, he will be traded for 2 firsts, NFL will count time benched for suspension and maybe add a few games for 2022. As soon as he plays well media and fan bases will pretend nothing occurred and he will be hailed as a hero if gets to playoffs for a bad franchise. If he plays hardballs or acts up a new story will come out and media will bring up his past a tarnish his reputation again, but as long as he wins media and fans will act like nothing occurred that’s how the NFL works. This same rule would’ve applied to AB stupidity if he returned defeated Rams and was in SB today, this entire board we trying to plan the 2023 cap and how Gronk Brady and AB can all be paid to win super bowl 3.

  37. Buc92’ Says:

Exactly @PatriotsFan … winning cures all & Deshaun would win instantly.. Also it won’t take as many picks to get him either as the Texans hands are forced !

    GoBucs!

  38. LakelandSteve Says:

There is no way the Bucs are really interested in Douchebag Watson. He would come at a Kings ransom and push many sponsors and fans away from Ray Jay.

  39. Kj Says:

Not guilty until proven guilty remember that. People lie all the time especially if they see dollars coming. If he did it he is an idiot, but we don’t know anything yet. The sad part is people like you are going to think he is guilty no matter what and that is one of the many things wrong with our society jumping on the band wagon without the actual facts.

  40. CitruscountyBuc Says:

Everyone complaining about bringing Watson in. On my opinion, this would be the best possible scenario. Let Jensen go and let hainsey roll. Put Stinnie in for Cappa and bring Godwin back at all costs. You have a freaking STUD at QB for the next 10 years!

I love the discussions about Watson that totally ignore the fact that he is a NASTY, SICKENING PREDATOR WHO ABUSED WOMEN.

If he has those character issues, what makes anyone think he will last more than a year or two before blowing up. Have you learned nothing from Antonio Brown?

Big deal that Watson hard some good stats. He never led them anywhere.

  45. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs 92 … ‘winning cures all & Deshaun would win instantly’.

How can you justify the conclusion that ‘Deshaun would win instantly’? His last year in Houston he went 4-12. That’s not ‘winning instantly’.

The issue with QBs like Watson is the impact that their monstrous salaries have on the salary CAP and TEAM-BUILDING. Watson’s current contract calls for $156 mil over 4 yrs … as in $44 mil per year average. His $44 mil represents over 20% of our adjusted CAP of $209.6 mil for 2022. Tom Brady’s $25 mil per year average would’ve represented only 12% of our salary CAP. Kyle Trask’s $1.3 mil would represent less than 1%.

Two issues arise. First, will you get what you pay for? With Brady we sure did. With Watson? You decide. Second, what CAN’T you buy when you spend a whole lot on one player? The difference between Watson & Trask, money-wise, is over $42 mil. You can buy a LOT OF TALENT for $42 mil to support a QB like Trask. Conversely, you fore-go a LOT OF TALENT when you pay someone like Watson big-bucks. Does their performance on the field make up for the lesser talent you have to settle for? Well, Houston’s 4-12 record behind Watson in 2020 tells me No.

  46. BuxfaninTX Says:

What? Texans GIVE their good players away… D Hopkins, JJ Watt. They even fired their coach and hired the same staff, AND put Lovie Smith in charge.

On a different note, I am pulling for Cincy tonight. We can still be the only team to win a Super bowl on our home turf and I also do not want LA to have a chance to copy our boat parade concept.

  48. Bqen green Says:

He’ll be on the raiders by training camp. Ben is told that the deranged haircut loving, Michael Jackson nose job twin, deranged raiders owner Marc Davis is infatuated with Watson, and is willing to do whatever it takes to land him. From what Ben’s people tell him, it’s one of the chief reasons McDaniels took the job. Derek Carr isn’t supposed to be involved in the trade. The raiders hope to recoup some of the lost draft picks with a separate Carr trade. As crazy as Davis is, it’s not a bad plan

  49. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules Says: The difference between Watson & Trask

    Lets see… 14-3 vs 3-14

    That’s the difference.

QB is literally the most important position in sports. By that logic you’d have been lobbying to keep Mike Glennon, saying he could win a SB. Oh wait, you probably did.

  50. Rod Munch Says:

Barrow is a full fledged SJW fruitcake, and if he wins this game, the media is going to make him the most annoying person in sports, taking Lebron James spot.

    No thanks.

Also I don’t think you need to worry about a boat parade in LA, but maybe they can have a dried up concrete reservoir parade and make that their thing.

  52. Bqen green Says:

Rayjay, Ben is with you, but for different reasons. The poor Bengals winning it all is good for the league. It gives all these terrible teams hope. It would also destroy the Rams team building philosophy, which Ben despises. Plus, Ben can’t stand Sean McVeigh, his hit girlfriend, or his LA house. Go Bengals!!!!!

  56. Rayjay1122 Says:

Best case for the Bucs is a TB12 return and let Trask be the back up for the season. I am not so sure his role last season was significantly contributing to his chances of even being a serviceable starter. Trask may be a good NFL QB eventually but IMHO, trying to start him this season would be premature at best.

  57. Swampbuc Says:

    Buccaneers should be playing today.

    BUCS SHOULD BE PLAYING TODAY.

Hey Todd – any idea who Cooper Kupp is?

Thanks, Todd. Did you know there is a game called the super bowl today? See if you can count how many times Cooper Kupp runs wide open, uncovered, behind Cincinnati’s defense. That is if you can still count. If it’s true that you actually had a stroke during the week leading up to the divisional playoff game, I apologize for my insensitivity.

  58. Tbbucs3 Says:

I love how many of the folks saying Jimmy G (the QB who just recently played the NFC title game) sucks are also clamoring for Kyle Trask to start. Hilarious.

  59. Defense Rules Says:

Rod Munch … Next time don’t twist others’ words please. That’s not kosher.

    What I said was …

‘The difference between Watson & Trask, MONEY-WISE, is over $42 mil.’

And since you obviously didn’t know, Watson was 4-12 in 2020, not 14-3. THAT’S what happens when you can’t afford the groceries to feed them. Brady understood that very very well, in both New England and Tampa Bay. Watson didn’t obviously (see 2021 & him letting his team down).

  60. BUCman Says:

Best play is to move forward with TRASK/GABBERT and use the cap space to bring back as many free agents as possible. If BRADY decides in August to come back for another year we welcome him with open arms. If not, we move forward with TRASK and see what we’ve got. If he’s the real deal we have our future. If not, 2023 looks to have much better options in free agency and the draft than this year does. Watson would bankrupt us of cap space and draft picks. Do you really want to go from Brady as the face of your franchise to slezzy Watson.

  61. Tye Says:

As I recall, The allegations against Watson did not come out until after he refused to play for the team because they did not hire a coach he wanted…

  63. Swampbuc Says:

No QB is likely to want to come and play for a team whose DC can’t understand that it’s important to scheme a defense that can contain the big play and cover the best WR on the planet for 42 seconds.

Yes Tye correct, this story would’ve been covered up and never seen media attention if their wasn’t a break up between the relationship between Houston and Watson prior to the leak. It would’ve seen settle quietly for the main accusers and the rest wouldn’t have joined the lawsuit. So no chance in Houston reconciling this issue as both sides know they betrayed each other. Watson is a high risk high reward trade.

Listnfrmafar – …so they’re afraid to go to the cops… but not to go to an ambulance chasing lawyer in order to get a payday? Have you ever put any thought into anything you’ve ever posted?

  89. Deano Says:

    D-ROK That’s funny

  90. Listnfrmafar Says:

Yes, a lawyer isn’t going to arrest them for solicitation. So I guess the Bill Cosby & Weinburg accusers were all lying as well. You must of grew up in a pretty sketchy trailer park.

  91. Rod Munch Says:

Listnfrmafar – you need to watch less movies, the cops are arresting women for reporting that they were sexually assaulted. Also, remember, they’re giving massages, completely legit, why are you assuming they’re ho’s?

  92. Eric Says:

im not buying that the massage girls were ghastly offended.

  93. TiredBucsFan Says:

    Russell Wilson please

  94. sasquatch Says:

If it is clearly demonstrated that all 22 cases are totally bogus, then I’ll give the guy a pass. That’s a high bar. Some people on here have a default position that the women are “professionals” and deserve it, or that they should expect to be assaulted, or the assault accusations are probably lies. My default position is that getting 22 people to lie about assault against the same person isn’t easy or likely. We’ll see.

No to Wentz big no to Watson and yes please to Kyle Trask

    It’s innocent until proven guilty…

If you already think it’s completely legit that none of these 22 ‘massage’ girls called the cops after being ‘assaulted’, and that they’re all scared of Watson, but not scared enough to not try to exploit a 7-figure payday out of him, and you’re already convicting him based on nothing but the claims from an ambulance chaser, then that’s on you.

Again, to any of the people who want to give Watson the chair, if I’m wrong with facts here, tell me what I’m getting wrong. I checked out early on this story since it sounded like a classic shakedown hussle, and so far no one is talking about any evidence that would show me that take is wrong.

It might not sound like it, but I’m open to new info if there is something big that I missed.

    —–

I don’t know if Deshaun is telling the truth, or if the ‘massage’ girls are, but on the surface, it certainly seems like one of his ‘victims’ would have called the cops, not called a lawyer and tried to get a payday to stay quiet. Maybe Watson is a POS predator who abuses women, if he was, then I’d hope one of these ladies would make that case in a criminal court, not just try to extort money to shut-up.

But based on what I know so far, it just sounds like a classic lawyer shakedown, and it’s going to end up getting settled out of court at some point. But if Watson is innocent, I hope he doesn’t settle and he fights it. But in case I’m not going to convict the guy when he’s not even, so far as I know, charged with anything.

  99. Craig Says:

I hope it is a smokescreen. If not half of the stadium will be empty for a couple of weeks, if he is allowed to play at all, I am not sure of Goodel’s rules on something like this.

The Bucs, or someone else, might spend big on him just to see him be banned from the league, look what happened to Kappernick for taking a knee.

  100. Bqen green Says:

Craig, Kappernick had several chances to come back into the league. He just didn’t wanna be a backup. He and his stupid advisors felt they could make more money off this blackballed nonsense. Bottom line is his ego got in the way. He could’ve signed on as a backup with plenty of teams. If his skills were so superior, why not bet on them? The people advising him, and Colin himself, made a terrible error in judgement.

  101. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Houston would demand a significant trade haul for Watson, Joe believes, if he’s acquired after the NFL determines Watson is in the clear and will not be suspended for his alleged naughty deeds. … Trading for Watson before that happens likely would be far less expensive but more risky for the team that gets him.” – Joe

There is absolutely no chance he does not get suspended. No chance at all.

I do not even understand why people want him at all. And no team is going to trade for him.

Pro Bowls? Who cares? The Pro Bowl is no longer about highlighting who is the best…and Watson certainly is not the best anyway.

And imagine what he would he doing in Tampa with all of those clubs.

    No thank you.

Not in this social media world it isn’t. And…22 cases? That many people pretty much makes him guilty in my book.

And media strips the innocent until proven guilty thing away these days.

Also…the NFL will suspend him even if they do not have proof.

  103. steve gase Says:

I came over to the Bucs with Brady — if the Bucs go after that evil piece of debris (Watson) then I had had it with the team…

the good people on the Bucs team will be tainted by sharing the same locker room with Watson.

  104. Swampbuc Says:

Maybe the smoke is being generated by Todd’s Bowels — he got nervous being considered for head coaching jobs and just started smoking kilos of weed every day. Might explain the moronic gameplan against the Rams and the utter stupidity of the play calling during the game.

That’s a lot of smoke Todd. Maybe you should have given it to AB instead, to mellow him out.

Oh and that reminds me — you continued in the great Bucshack tradition of letting also-ran QBs ring up your defense. See the Jets guy whatshisname, see Taylor’s Heinekin, see Carson Wentz (what a failure and potentially your next Buccaneers starting QB harharhar) see Weedman or whoever Winston’s backup was at New Orleans. You get a bunch of accolades but it seems like it’s more just dumb luck when something works. Your unit doesn’t know its assignments and your “blitz genius” utterly sucks.

Glad you got that head coaching job at — oh, wait.

    ————

It’s not 22 cases – it’s 22 women, who were recruited by a lawyer who wanted a payday to shut up and go away. These are not women that came forward – these are women who signed onto a 7-figure lawsuit in order to get a payday. None of them, to the best of my knowledge, contacted the police to say they had been assaulted.

The story, in my understanding, is one women, who didn’t go the police – went to a lawyer, who attempted to extort money from Watson, saying he’d go public with information unless he got money. When Watson refused to pay the lawyer, claiming he did nothing wrong, the lawyer publicly put out a plea for anyone else ‘assaulted’ by Watson to join his quest for a 7-figure payday.

Again, if I’m wrong on the facts, someone correct me – that’s where I checked out of the story since it’s such an obvious scam. The fact so many people fall for this stuff, I don’t get it, but maybe I’m missing something.

  106. Buclova Says:

It just seems strange as soon as he informed the Texans he no longer wanted to play for them the allegations surfaced
