Chris Godwin Wants To Keep “One-Two Punch” Together

February 12th, 2022

Chris Godwin speaks.

If Bucs free agent wide receiver Chris Godwin is intent on bailing on the Tom Brady-less Bucs and hitting the lottery in free agency, he sure didn’t sound like it.

Last night the stud receiver appeared on “Total Access” seen weeknights on NFL Network. Co-host Nate Burleson told Godwin what Mike Evans had said about him earlier in the day on the same network and Godwin smiled.

“Obviously, I love playing with my guy Mike,” Godwin said. “We’re a one-two punch and we have been that way for a couple of years now. I would love to continue to do that.”

That doesn’t mean Godwin is going to roll over at the negotiating table next month when the free agency dinner bell rings. Godwin wouldn’t say much more about his pending free agency, even though co-host David Carr said he could hook up Godwin with a house in his brother’s Las Vegas-area neighborhood if Godwin wanted to play for the Raiders.

“We will see where the cards fall come March,” Godwin said.

As far as his rehab from knee surgery, Joe thought Godwin seemed upbeat, saying, “I’m doing really good. I move around pretty good.”

As for his former quarterback Brady, Godwin seemed to admit he didn’t know what Brady’s plans are, saying “if” Brady retires.

But when Godwin discussed Brady, Godwin’s class came out. “I’m very grateful to have gotten to play two seasons with him.”

Of course he’d like to stay….it’s home….Bucs drafted him….loves his team & teammates. I’m confident Licht will make this happen.

  2. Mickman Says:

Love this guy. He should not even get to free agent date. They are allowed to sign him prior! If he gets there they lose him.

  3. tampabayallday Says:

He wants to stay, FO needs to make it happen

  4. Hodad Says:

Well if he comes back someone should ask him if he has faith in Gabbert, because that’s who’s going to be his starting QB.

  5. Listnfrmafar Says:

Not without a QB he won’t. Godwin only loses credibility with a less than above average QB. He’s different from Evan’s, he’s on the upswing whereas Evan’s is on cruise control.

  6. allbuccedup Says:

There is a reason Gabbert didn’t play in 2019 because hes not even a second string QB much less a starter. Hes BAs drinking buddy I suspect thats the reason hes here. If he starts back to the cellar.

  7. Greg Says:

Gabbert was brought in because he knew BA’s offense better than anyone available. I am pretty sure they are not entertaining the thought of him being the starting QB as they know his strengths/weaknesses better than us in the peanut gallery.

  8. DarenGibo Says:

I have always thought of Gabbert as BA security blanket.. he doesn’t want to HAVE to play him, but he knows HE knows the playbook and style so he is the break glass in case of emergency QB. THEN BA can go get THE guy to be QB knowing if he has injury THEN Gabbert can come in……

  9. SOEbuc Says:

Don’t want to pay a chump FA QB, so Licht has already let him know Trask or Gabbert won’t be playing QB long into his contract. Drop Jensen and sign Cappa for a young right side. I don’t know what Hainsey would look like but Jensen is too expensive.

Should drop Donnie. He will continue to get the run around now without the Brady communication on the line.

‘Co-host David Carr said he could hook up Godwin with a house in his brother’s Las Vegas-area neighborhood if Godwin wanted to play for the Raiders.’

Hmmm, interesting. OR … Derek Carr could get traded to the Bucs and Godwin could play with him in Tampa instead.

  11. Gerinda Says:

I don’t like it when the team are bring separated
    Because of money!

  12. HeyItsAdam Says:

    Carter/Moss
    Smith/McCardell
    Irvin/Harper
    Rice/Taylor
    Clayton/Duper
    Swann/Stallworth

    …. and now Evans/Godwin

  13. gp Says:

Reading between the lines a little bit.
And there’s no telling for sure which way it will pan out.
But I have a strong feeling that there will be a lot of newsworthy stories coming out of, and pertaining to, One Buc right around the free agency dinner bell.
I know which way I’d like to see it play out, but there’s too many variables to make solid predictions right now.

  14. Cobraboy Says:

Both he and Evans understand much success comes from both being on the field at the same time.

  15. Buccos Says:

I don’t know why everyone on this site acts like Derek Carr is a viable option for the Bucs. He is an average NFL QB. He is nothing special. I would rather have Garrapolo. I’d rather have Winston than either one of those guys though. Maybe even Trubisky.

    …………..

Evans tied Randy Moss’ 6 consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards with the likes of Mike Glennon, Josh McCown, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jameis Winston.
I guess in your eyes Godwin is no Evans.

  17. Buccaneers Says:

We love u Godwin and we only want u in Tampa we need you and Evans and Brady gronk Jensen n jpp to get another title go bucs

  18. Buccaneers Says:

Oh yea and. Ab wuts up with u treating the team the way u have we love ur mental a$~

  19. allbuccedup Says:

JL better be careful and not get to a cap strapped mess as the Saints and Packers.

  20. David Says:

Good to hear but I know he still needs to be paid. I hope a lot of players take into account taxes. For example, the city/state tax rate playing in California, Chicago, Seattle, NY is about 10%.
So you could play for the Rams at 15 million a year and take home the same amount in Tampa at 13.5

That is a big advantage that doesn’t get talked about enough with Florida and Texas and Arizona and a few other states.

I’d also love to think that many of the players want to win and would be willing to not quite max out in order to help the team sign other players. Brady & Evans have done it.
At the same time, I’m not going to get on them for wanting to max out and get what they can while they are physically able to play.

  21. ModHairKen Says:

    Pay the man.

  22. Terry Payton Says:

If Brady’s wife Gisehelle okayed it Brady would return I believe 1 more with TB. The nfl and the refs did not want Tampa to rereat as champions. My reason is the refs calls against Tampa Bay was game changers for The Rams. My question is was these the best refs the nfl had for a nfc champisonship game???. The hit on Brady by von miller to Brady’s helmet was ruffing the passer, but was a No call by the Refs. The sack by Suh was called un sportsman like conduct against Tampa Bay, another game changer. The nfl wanted the Rams to play in the super bowl, why the game is being played in los angles.

  23. Pewter Power Says:

Duh he wants to stay imagine that you mean it was only media being dramatic. No way the offense does a complete reboot and that’s what would happen if Godwin, Brady, Gronk, Lenny and Jensen leave. Of course he’ll get paid plus he has just as much leverage as they have with the injury excuse

  24. steele Says:

Terry Payton, I agree! The officials made several game-deciding calls for the Rams. They weren’t even subtle.

I bet Tommy B. is still hopping mad about the “unsportsmanlike”, and the non-Von call. Disgusted enough to drive him into retirement.

  25. Boston Tommy Says:

I just wanted to say, when Brady vs over and started for Tampa I came with him. Everyone I know called me a band wagon. I have a BUCS Brady jersey I wore every Sunday. Now that Brady’s retired I had to think hard about who to root for. I just gotta say LET’S GO BUCS!!! I love this team!! So much talent from Godwin to Evans, to White to DavidI can’t picture cheering on any other team!!
