“They Bring It All To Byron And He Puts It All Together”

January 17th, 2022

Byron Leftwich

Bucco Bruce Arians peeled the curtain back a bit on how the Bucs will handle being the team awaiting tonight’s result of the first-ever Monday Night Football playoff game.

Will the Bucs get to face an average Rams defense (watch them play in the second half of this season and you’ll see average at best ) or will it be a slightly more dangerous defense in Arizona?

Joe’s not sure who is more scary, manbeast Aaron Donald, who the Bucs have handled very well over the past two years, or double-digit Arizona sack man Chandler Jones, who is one of the all-time greats at forcing fumbles. Yeah, Jones has a lot more forced fumbles than anyone who ever wore a Buccaneers uniform.

Bucco Bruce Arians has the challenge of preparing to face both teams on a short week.

Arians explained today that the Bucs will be working all day today on readying firm game plans, but then they’ll be scouting the game tonight and making changes.

Joe asked Arians to elaborate on how that works inside the walls of One Buc Palace.

“Different guys have different [evaluation] assignments on blitzes, run game, substitution patterns, secondary coverages. Each guy has a handle on his assignment,” Arians said. “They bring it all to Bryon and he puts it all together. Same thing with Todd, they do a collaboration of everything, so we’ve got both teams broken down that way. And we’ll see what happens tonight.”

Joe wonders how a preparation lunatic like Tom Brady, a guy known for his early bedtime, deals with a situation like this.

Joe suspects Brady will alter his schedule, stay up all night taking notes, and then fire off his recommendations to Byron Leftwich before catching 4 or 5 hours of sleep. And then Brady will catch up on his sleep on Tuesday night.

If teams with head coach openings haven’t yet made decisions internally, then Joe thinks there will be a lot of eyes on the Bucs coordinators’ performances on Sunday. Short week, brutal opponent, a trusting and largely hands-off head coach, it’s quite a showcase game for Bowles and Leftwich.

Maybe Bowles and Leftwich LIKE coaching under Arians.

    At least for now.

I suspect an OC and DC position under Arians might be a very desirable position…

  2. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I thought Leftwich had a great game plan yesterday. I saw some stuff we hadn’t seen so far this season and it’s going to take a lot more of that to get back to the SB. The injuries have been brutal, but they’ve also forced BL to adjust accordingly which in turn makes the offense harder for opponents to prepare for. As long as BL can stay one step ahead and Brady can keep these guys focused and executing we can keep winning. Now about that O-line…

  3. Biff Barker Says:

Arians only drawback to replacing coordinators is how long he decides to be head coach here,

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Both of our coordinators had awesome game plans for the Eagles.
But they were a very easy opponent.
Neither the Cardinals or Rams will be an easy opponent.

  5. JimmyJack Says:

Yesterday Byron made all of his haters look even stupider then they already looked like.

  6. PSL Bob Says:

With our O-line potentially facing a dramatic reorg, I’ll be rooting for whoever has the weakest defensive front and fewest blitz packages.

  7. HC Grover Says:

Here in the Outback we don’t get to see NBC games at all. I look forward to the result. I will not get to watch the Sunday Game either cause it is NBC. NFL should drop NBC. I will get it on Bucs radio and I like their announcers.

  8. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If I were the Bucs, this is what I would change :

  9. Buczilla Says:

I hope that we get the Rams next since they have beaten us twice in a row. I don’t care how they may matchup better against us. If we can’t beat Stafford and those dudes in our stadium then we don’t deserve to advance. I’m not worried about losing either Bowles or Leftwich since we have 8 billion coaches already with the team to choose from.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Why is it that BA is always checking the plays on his armband? Is he checking to see what BL has called or……is he actually calling some plays?

  11. Francisco Guzman Says:

I hope they can get grayson back. Gonna need the whole cast to step up next week. Can’t be just evans and gronk. Need Fournette as well.

  12. Listnfrmafar Says:

This one’s for you August. I thought the offense looked a little different almost refreshing. I agree with this new found proven backfield I also would like to see two back sets and one go in motion. Bowles had a great game plan unfortunately it faltered a.bit.at the end but fixable. The Davis penalty was stupid, at that point he made one play and the world didn’t need to see his gold teeth. Limit the penalties and get these guys to play a 60 min game and the NFC championship could be in the near future. One play does stick out to me that no one else addressed. It’s 3rd & 2 a first down closes out the game and Bucs run a sweep to the right on Wells side and everyone knew he could barely walk.

  13. Eric Says:

when your up 31 the defense is gonna coast a bit.

  14. Bucsfan4ever Says:

I hope tonight’s game goes into triple overtime

  15. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Unless it’s the Saints no team in the playoffs have the defense to stop Brady Evans AND Gronk. Everybody else contributes according to their abilities that’s why they’re back ups. Arians and BL have been doing a great job without Godwin and A Brown and will continue to do so

  16. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Listn I wonder about about that too. Why run to his side instead of to the left.

  17. Destinjohnny Says:

If we were healthy I’d feel heaps better about our chances…
Either way, beating Brady in the playoffs is a tall task

  18. Dew Says:

Randy Moss just said the Bucs made only 4 out 13 3rd down opportunities yesterday. And he is concerned about that.Is that true? I can’t find the stat. Thanks

  19. Listnfrmafar Says:

Dew, that can’t be correct. Unless Bucs made a lot of 1st downs on 1st and 2nd down. We’re the.Bucs even stopped 9 times on O. Moss is confusing Eagles with Bucs.

  20. Pewter Power Says:

Everyone who has a hand in the game planning against the saints since Bruce got here should leave with leftwich

  21. Brandon Says:

The Bucs really aren’t on the short week, the winner of the Monday night game is.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Cobra

Agree completely that Leftwich and Bowles have great gigs. In fact since I like and respect both of them I hope they use that security to avoid jumping at the first opportunity.

Bowles in particular is well aware of what happens when you take the wrong job with a floundering franchise. Of course BA didn’t balk at coming here but I suspect that’s because BA knew he had a solid team with good future prospects if he could simply figure out our MAJOR weakness…the QB position.

Yeah Brady made BA’s job instantly easier but give credit to BA/Licht they did not hestitate and pulled out EVERY stop to try and land Brady.

I would love to see Leftwich go to Jax. I think it’s a job tailor made for him. He knows the market, is a familiar face to Jag fans, and he has a 2nd year talented QB to mold.

That would leave Bowles as the heir apparent to BA. If BA decides to simply move “upstairs” instead of totally retiring, I feel confident he and Licht can back up Bowles for continued Buc success.

  23. BillyBucco Says:

Well they need to start prepping for the Rams dang

  24. BillyBucco Says:

Just frightening is right. If they overload our right side with Donald Von Miller and a blitz, Brady goes into a fetal position in .5 seconds.

Todd Bowles is truly either game planning or drinking heavily.

  25. Izod Says:

There is a solid chance we get absolutely blown out by the Rams, while there is a virtually zero chance we blow them out. What does that tell you? We better play our absolute best and hope they don’t come anywhere theirs.

We need great game plans for offense, defense, and ST, AND we need to play with a heckuva lot more energy & focus than we did in our first encounter with the Rams.

  26. Wild Bill Says:

Based on what happened in our first game (a physical thumping) I have a lot of concerns especially with all our injuries. Cooper ran free against our dbs. And both their offensive and defensive lines were more physical than ours. Overall the Rams are more physical. If they bring their A game we will have to bring our A+ .
