Soft Edges

January 23rd, 2022

The Bucs, in many ways, marched through the playoffs last season on the back of a ferocious pass rush.

Today, the rotation of Tampa Bay edge rushers combined for no sacks and one quarterback hit.

Ironically, it came from Jason Pierre-Paul, who is playing with one arm neutered by a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder.

Shaq Barrett, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Anthony Nelson and Cam Bill were shut out. Shaq said last week he was 100 percent healthy, but perhaps the ACL/MCL sprains in his knee (suffered last month) weren’t quite right. The rookie, Tyron-Shoyinka, was no factor today and didn’t register on the stat sheet. Nelson was ok but not what he was in recent weeks.

Every offseason Joe pounds on bars and kitchen tables yelling, “Pass rush. Pass rush. Pass rush.” It’s essential to win in January and February in a passing league.

The Bucs have a good pass rush. Absolutely they do. But it’s certainly not what it was last season. And today it couldn’t capitalize on the Rams starting a backup left tackle.

Over and over the rush didn’t get home — and the Bucs will go home because of it.

Especially on that second to last play.

  2. Mike C Says:

Proud of the crowd, never gave up.

  3. Austin Says:

Losing Cupo twice lost us this game, entirely unacceptable. The years top offensive player gets lost?? TWICE?? GTFOH

  4. Austin Says:

    Cupp*

  5. HC Grover Says:

Did Plan 9 from Outer Space play? What a joke he is.

  6. cmurda Says:

We could point to a hundred different things that didn’;t go well but I’ll point to the only reason we actually lost. The same thing that has been said by many. Todd Bowles single handedly is the reason for the loss. The O Line wasn’t good, the D line wasn’t good. The secondary was meh. The offense took forever to get going. The fact is it was 27-27 with 40 seconds left and Todd Bowles failed miserably by defying common sense. That’s a tough one to get past. i can understand why our offense struggled. I can understand why our O Line struggled. I can understand all of the struggles but I can’t understand a coach putting his defense in position to fail when it’s really an obvious, simple concept. Todd Bowles lost this game for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Not any one player or part of this team. Just Todd.

  7. Adrnagy Says:

Shaq and jpp need to go

  8. Coburn Says:

I don’t even. Remember seeing Nelson or gill in the game. Seemed like a mistake

  9. Adrnagy Says:

Brady was shaking even before the ball was hiked. He needs to get a self check or move on.

  10. tampabuscsbro Says:

It seems like vultures that f ed off for a year are coming out of the wood work now.

  11. HC Grover Says:

Idiot Bowles call blitzens with Plan 9 instead of prevent D on Cupp. Get him OUT!

  12. Adrnagy Says:

Bucs will signed godwin. And will have evans. The rest of WR NEED to go. Along with OJ.

KEEP. GODWIN. EVANS. BRATE. ROJO. GIO. VAUGNG. FOURNETTE.

LET GO c. Davis. Jpp. Shaq.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

Shaq was non existent as a passrusher today.

I waited all year for him to jump his first snap and make a big play. All year long and not once. It is fair to question if Shaq can be counted on to be a game changing player for us.

Feels like we need a stud on defense and looking for White and Shaq to be that guy is not going to work.

  14. Bucsfansince1975 Says:

Wow Joe today’s posts are very negative. We had an abundance of injuries all season long and the Rams did not. Too whiny for me today

  15. AMI_Chris Says:

Rams backup T played well; Bucs’ didn’t. This game was all about the trenches. Rams’ lines played much better than the Bucs’ lines.

  16. Adrnagy Says:

    Keep bowles. Let leftwich go

  17. LVMYBUCS Says:

SECONDARY SUCKS THIS SEASON AND LAST DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS THEY HAVE BEEN THE BUCS WEAKEST LINK.

  18. Lesko_Brandon Says:

It feels like Gerald McCoy was out there as our pass rusher 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. Soft like Charmin.

  19. Adrnagy Says:

    Winfield. Smb. Dean are good.

Whitehead and c. Davis need to go

  20. PassingThru Says:

There’s more to being an edge player than just the pass rush, that’s one dimension, albeit a very important one. You also have to be able to diagnose the action in the backfield, and know when rush the QB, set the edge against the run, or drop into coverage. If you blindly pass rush each and every time, you leave opening for a vet QB like Stafford to pick you apart.

I give a pass to JPP, he’s damaged goods. When healthy (and younger) he’s a much more complete player than Shaq at OLB. I’m not ragging on Shaq, it’s just that JPP was that good.

Tryon-Shoyinka is all rookie, and not in the positive sense. He is an athlete who plays football rather than an athletic football player. He might get better over time, maybe even make a second year jump, but all season long he showed that he wasn’t remotely ready to play at this level.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

On top of that you got every safety on your team that looks like they are running different plays from a different playbook.

These guys have been in this defense for years. Why the heck dont they know what the play is?

  22. Coburn Says:

Donovan Smith was pretty disappointing after having a really good season

  23. LVMYBUCS Says:

Winfield let the best WR in the NFL get behind him that was stupid.

  24. Adrnagy Says:

Im not saying this bcuz we lost. Its all year.

  25. cmurda Says:

@Ardnagy. I don’t know what you are talking about. Brady wasn’t shaking when he marched the team all the way back to tie it with just 40 seconds left.

And Brate is gooooone. There is no way he comes back unless he takes a massive paycut. The guy is just serviceable at this point. He didn’t exactly produce when needed today. I appreciate his service but there is no reason to sign him.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

Stop making excuses. Jpp is done. Shaq cant dominate. C. Davis gets penalties or bust plays.

  27. Adrnagy Says:

Bradys age is getting to him. Hes always afraid when he goes against a great pass rush.

  28. HC Grover Says:

If Brady hangs it up we will have BA and his staff (nobody will hire them) and his beloved Gabbert at QB next year. They will keep their faiked draft picks and we will finish last in the South. We won only because of Brady.

  29. Adrnagy Says:

Cmurda. Brady didnt march the bucs. Rams fumble.

  30. “That Guy” Says:

Adrnagy, you deserve the 13 year basement that everyone you just named pulled our bucs out of.

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

All I know is that we have a game where JPP didn’t line up in the neutral zone & we lost…..on a Matt Gay FG, no doubt.

    It’s truly a Buc Life!!!

  32. cmurda Says:

Brady had icewater in his veins. It took some amazing 4th down throws and a lot of moxy for Brady to lead the comeback. He can’t force Bowles and the defense to use common sense for in game situations. You keep trying to deflect the blame and I will keep you focused on the real cause of the loss. Todd Bowles. Nothing and nobody else. Just Todd Bowles.

  33. Iamabuc Says:

I believe we lost that game in that last drive when Arians decided to not go for 2 points; instead he went for the field goal.

  34. David Says:

Shaq surprised me. I expected to see the beast that we saw during the Super Bowl with him getting after Stafford nonstop. As for JPP, I was hopeful but he’s been a shell of himself. I just hope he can come back and be effective again after off-season surgery.
As for JTS, he showed a lot of promise preseason and has had a couple flashes throughout the season but way too few. He needs to take a big step forward next year

  35. PassingThru Says:

I think some of you might better learn something about football. While the coaching was bad (particularly Bowles), the injuries limited the offensive options. Brady was facing two Hall of Fame edge rushers, that were clearly superior to Donovan Smith, and especially Wells and whatever else were left to block on the right.

Here’s a simple math exercise for the football-challenged: The more help you leave behind for pass protection, the easier it is for the defense to double your receiving options. There were only two quality receiving options, and one of them stayed home to pass block.

  36. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Shaq looks like a real backup of Von Miller. JPP will retire or needs to let go.

  37. Jaybuc Says:

Shaq had his best games last year after GB lost their left tackle, Followed by KC losing both their tackles. We saw today and last week when we lose a starting (All Pro) tackle

  38. cmurda Says:

@Iamabuc. Umm, so the Rams would have won by 2 points instead of 3. No, once again. The reason we lost that game was because of Todd Bowles only. I am enjoying this nonsense. Does anybody else want to invent another reason we lost instead of the points given up at the end which, you know, caused us to lose? Does anybody want to defend single coverage on Cooper Kupp with a safety? I’ll wait.

  39. DBS Says:

The secondary has been blamed on pass rush and every other excuse in the world. The eye does not lie. You watch receivers burn them or see them standing watching making no attempt to tackle or one arm tackling.. They are bad. Time for real pros some way SMB is the first one that needs to go.

  40. Go Bucs! Says:

yeah, it was incredible we were still in the game and when we tied that one. Boy what a bummer. We should have gotten to overtime. Father Dungy was even wondering about that call. Hard to defend. I’ll say this, it is who we are and we lost today. Proud to be a Buc!

  41. Francisco Guzman Says:

A brutal schedule next year. Just brutal. This team has to learn how to beat physical teams like the rams and saints. They need good players to compete if brady comes back.

  42. Natron Says:

For the fun to continue in Tampa, we must get Brady back. Ownership should consult him on every move they make in the off season.

  43. Miller5252 Says:

This should be a very interesting offseason. A lot of changes in talent need to happen to get this team back to the Super Bowl. Plus next years schedule is going to be brutal and all this come from behind stuff won’t happen. D line and secondary needs a major upgrade to stay relevant. Maybe Brady saw his next years schedule and wants no part of it because of where the teams talent level is at. He carried this team way too much this year!

  44. Jaybuc Says:

I really wanted Tampa to sign Trey Hendrickson last year in FA. Could have signed him for less money than Shaq. He’s had a solid, very good year for The Bengals

  45. Francisco Guzman Says:

This team needs a talented 3-4 DE that can get to the QB.

  46. Bucs Guy Says:

Cutting Brate would be a $7.2M cap hit. OJ, Rojo and JPP won’t be back. From there, a few either or decisions on D-line, O-line and secondary. Priorities in FA and the draft will be CB, O-line, D-line, TE.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Cmurda actually that was zero coverage on Kupp. Winfield let him run right by him and was looking into the backfield.

He looked like he didnt know what the play was and so did Edwards on the long TD and Whitehead also played like crap today. Not sure what Bowles did with his safteys in this game but every singld one of them looked confused all game from the start.

  48. 86_90 Says:

Great comeback. It was NOT necessary to go all out blitz it that situation. They needed 25 yards for a field goal attempt inside 50 yards. Why blitz at all?
Only guess is Bowles didn’t trust his secondary to make a clean tackle. SMBunting should NOT be on an NFL team—he can NOT tackle.

  49. Nprbuc Says:

Great offensive game plan too. “Let’s haveTom throw 54 times. We will slow down their pass rush by running Lenny 13 times. No time to run Gio or Vaughn for a change of pace. It’s what I call ground and pound to keep the defense honest”. How many times did we hear ground and pound and also our hurry up offense? Why did we not see Gio or Vaughn in the backfield say nothing about actually running the ball? Throwing 54 times under extreme pressure to covered receivers, until the last couple of minutes is not a recipe for success. We almost pulled it off until Bowels brain dead call on covering Cupp. What could have been disintegrated with that one call. How sad to end a great season like that.

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to be very smart with our money & we’ll have some……..We can do better than Brate & OJ…..I think JPP is done…..
It would be nice to have Godwin without breaking the bank…..but there are many good WRs out there….
Maybe we can get some mileage out of Grayson & Perriman.

I think Suh may be gone…..Nacho is good…..we have some good safeties…..need another CB…..

Pass rush is the big question…..maybe a top FA…..

  51. August 1976 Buc Says:

You keep trying to deflect the blame and I will keep you focused on the real cause of the loss. Todd Bowles. Nothing and nobody else. Just Todd Bowles.

Ahh Excuse me, it takes points to win.
So where was the 30+ points a game offense?

Where was Ice water in his veins for most of 3 Qtrs?

Pretty simple they did not score enough points to win.

So reallly you are deflecting blame from the Brady led offense.

Brady is the GOAT, but looked terrible at times.

I posted on JBF before the game, they needed 35-40 points to win.

If they score 35 they win, so again, where was the offense?

It is a team game, and the Team got their AZZ beat today.

Call it what it is. Why roast just T Bowles, Roast both sides of the ball.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  52. PassingThru Says:

Cutting Brate would save about $5.35 million in cap space, leaving about $2 million or so in dead cap money. Brate is a smart guy, even if he did go to Harvard. Either he takes a pay cut or he’s gone.

  53. steele Says:

Pass rush has been inconsistent and mostly sub-par all season. JTS is a disappointment. Pass rush is a big offseason priority. Defense, defense, defense, and smashmouth offense.

This team has to be the bully, not the bullied. Look at the teams left. LA, SF- physical.

  54. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I think they need to primarily draft DBs and WRs, maybe a Swiss Army knife player like Debo Samuels. I like Belichick approach of building from the secondary forward. Pass rush gets home when the receivers are covered. Plus the secondary IS the weak link. Along with Todd and Byron.

  55. Jerry Says:

Call the season what it was… it was a failure. This was a super bowl or bust season. Everyone knew it was. That was the bar. It was a title defense. Super Bowl was the expectation.

Everyone keeps trying to find moral victories because we got this far despite injuries. Or that we won 13 games. Or we won the division. Or we got the 2nd seed. But it’s all meaningless. Go ask Green Bay fans if they feel their season was a success because they won the division, got the #1 seed, and won 13 games. It’s a failure.

  56. Adrnagy Says:

    Bowles and brate will stay.

Its the players thats asked for $ like shaq and jjp that need to go. Im ok with suh returning.

    C. Davis. And whitehead not to sure.

  57. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Maybe we should get Devante Adams if he decides to part ways with rodgers and Packers. That solves our WR. Let Sherman go ($3M) and get a decent DB.

Yes yes yes, and yes again on point.

  59. PassingThru Says:

JTS might make a difference someday, but for now, he’s just not a satisfactory OLB. Unrefined, doesn’t make good decisions. No counter moves. Maybe he’ll make a difference next season, but currently, he isn’t ready for prime time.

  60. Lamarcus Says:

I’m not upset. I knew who we were. Didn’t buy the hype. Brady camera crew couldn’t get into So-Fi stadium and to record them. That’s an L

  61. Adrnagy Says:

    Evans. And godwin will return.
Licht needs to find a good #3 WR. keep vaughn. Fournette. Gio. Brate. Oj. Get a good OT. Keep leverette , stinnie.LET GO OF GABBERT AND GRIFFIN.

  62. Jaybuc Says:

I also find it funny that so many in the media are so high on out two coordinators. I know we had a bunch of injuries but good teams and backup QBs know how to pit up points. Leftwich is predictable and was saved by Brady the last two years. Brady should have been screaming “Nooooo” more often

  63. HC Grover Says:

BA does not like Brady being in the limelights. He is jealous. Tell me I am wrong.

  64. alvinscissorsharper Says:

Shaq must have had a very clean uniform after the game.

  65. Adrnagy Says:

Why does brady get sooo shaky before the game starts ? I get hes going to play donald and miller. But the ball hasnt been hiked.

  66. Mike Johnson Says:

I said Our D was going to have to play lights out for us to win. They played a real bad 1st half. And our secondary kinda sucked. Stafford and Kupp had a field day on us. As did their beast no 99 on defense. Thats how warren sapp use to look for you newcomers. Stafford had so much time back there, I swore I watched him eating a sandwich in-between. Tough loss. But I suspected it was coming. On to next year.

  67. Greg Says:

    Damn!

  68. Francisco Guzman Says:

@Adrnagy what are you talking about? Did you see the whole game? I would love to see the pressures on this game. Brady hardly had time.

  69. Francisco Guzman Says:

    @Lamarcus go away troll!

  70. JimmyJack Says:

Blaming Bowles is fair but you cant say he is the only reason if you watched Donovan Smith play today.

Some pressure came from the right side which is a bit excusable without Wifs……..but most of the pressure was Donovan Smith getting beat on every single play against #40……Its one thing if he gives up a few big plays, getting beat each and every play receptivity? That was freaking pathetic! Its really not even possible to win like that.

  71. Bucfan Says:

    Ardnagy,

You should stop typing now because your comments prove how ignorant your Bucs football knowledge is.

Ssshhhhhhh guy! Time for you to go to bed.

    Stop drinking toilet water.

Where are the screen plays?. Where are the flat throws to gio. ?
Brady had time. Except d smith screwing it up two times.
This game was all on brady and leftwich. Our defense put us on a hole and got us out with minus two players. ( shap& jpp. )

  73. ocala Says:

JPP was a liability all year. Shaq didnt do anything in this game but he has had a good year. Time for JPP to hang them up.

  74. Adrnagy Says:

Bucs fan and francisco are bandwagon brady fans.

Our offense couldnt dial up nothing for 2 qtrs.

Our defense was out there like … the whole game ! Even so we got 4 TO.

  75. Bosch Says:

    Have they fired Bowles yet?

  76. Upstate NY BUC Says:

That 3rd and 20 coversion early in game sealed Bowles fate as a head coach! What team wants that as a head coach, ridiculous… I knew it was going to be long day for secondary!!! That has to frustrate Brady, just sayi.

  77. Swampbuc Says:

Bowles – worst showing since first half of Chiefs regular season game. He almost should be fired for that. He won’t be but, almost.

Maybe he gets a HC job and we can hire Brian Flores.

  78. cmurda Says:

Lost in all of this is how proud I am of this team and how much I thoroughly enjoyed watching Brady work his mojo to get this game tied. It’s easy to forget about those clutch throiws and catches to get there. The offense really fought through to find a way which is why it’s so infuriating to watch our defense give it up in 40 secs. i guess you were right Francisco. It was too much time on the clock. I still stand by what I said at the time during the game when you said that. Thebn, it would clearly be the defense’s fault. It shouldn’t be too much to ask to not allow the Rams to get 40+ yards.

Well, as we know they got that and then some in just 2 plays.

You ain’t lying @Jimmyjack. AW31 provided little resistance. The entire defense seemed to think that the Rams were going to go conservative over the middle. So much so that they cheated way too much.

    1) I don’t know why the defense would assume that?

    2) It doesn’t matter what the defense thought. Not one play should have happened especially on that drive in which Cooper wasn’t doubled. I don’t care what shell the defense is in. Again, that’s not anything ingenious. It’s just common sense. The most casual of us fans would have known to do that but a coach who has been around the game his whole life didn’t. That is such a tough pill to swallow.

  79. SteelStudBuc Says:

Lot of Negative Nancy’s on this site… tough game to watch, great comeback, heartbreaking finish. That last series was brutal play calling… any old drunk could see that… but chill out… so many fans want to whine and cry… it was a good run… this team will be different next year. Lots of things to be positive about.

Defense… I’m thinking JPP, Suh will be gone.
Offense… I’m thinking Brady, Gronk, Godwin stay, but Brate, Howard, RoJo are gone

  80. Adrnagy Says:

Field position for rams was grwat all game thanks to brady and offense.

  81. firethecannons Says:

said we had 2 sacks on nfl.com Tryon may be a waste of a pick

  82. Adrnagy Says:

At the end. I blame bucs organization for choosing white uniforms. Lol

  83. Lamarcus Says:

So why did we sign Shaq to a big contract and then not show up? Even Devin white has regressed into oblivion. OJ, Tyler Johnson are below average. I really don’t know we cut Bell…He’s a good pass blocker at least. I give JPP mad props for his never quit attitude when he could easily be on IR earlier in the year. Nelson has improved but Tryon was overrated from the beginning. Donovan Smith is HIGHLY OVERRATED and it came back to bite us. I never want to hear another “Pro Bowl” story about how DSmith should be there. He’s whack

  84. Listnfrmafar Says:

Because Bowles was smart he held off blitzing. I can hear McVay screaming to his assistants, “I don’t fing believe it, their going to blitz, hahaha!”

  85. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Forget the Six Million Dollar Man, Lee Majors. Shaq Barrett – the invisible 20 million dollar a year man.

  86. Daddylonglegs Says:

Biggest reason for this loss is because we got beat in the trenches. O Line and D line just didn’t compete!

  87. cmurda Says:

You’re absolutely nuts Ardnagy. Brady was under siege. Not just 2 times. In fact, he was sacked 3 times. Nearly every time he dropped back he was under pressure. Did you watch the game or were you just listening or following it?

  88. HC Grover Says:

All week all I heard was do not blitz. Bowles blitzed on last 2 plays for 64 yards. He should be sent down the road. Attn Jacksonville or any other team. Bowles, take him please.

  89. cmurda Says:

Stafford was best against blitz. So not only should we blitz when we just need to make sure they don’t get bunches of yards but to sweeten the pot… Wait for it… We are going to have our safety cover the best WR in the NFL. There is just so much genius there in those 2 plays, I can hardly stomach it. How could the Jags and others resist grabbing Bowles as coach? How could you let that genius get away?

  90. Adrnagy Says:

Cmurda. Lets call it how it was. Back up RT. BANGED UP Center. Gronk protecting. Brady had time.

  91. Adrnagy Says:

If you wanted 5 sec thats a different story

  92. jay adams Says:

Jpp lots of heart, just playing half mast. Whatever shaq had his 18 sack season he doesn’t have it any more. Our defense had so many guys go down hurt all year they don’t seem to be the same D as last season

  93. JimmyJack Says:

Adrnagy……Brady had time? What do you mean? From his back?

  94. Francisco Guzman Says:

JimmyJack the guy’s a 🤡. I read somewhere the amount of pressure between miller and donald. It was crazy.

  95. Ash Says:

Lol man talk about bitter fans wow

  96. Adrnagy Says:

Back up banged RT. BANGED UP c.
    Brady had time.

Where is the future HC leftwich playcalling?

Did you expect read 1,2,3 ? Stupid.

Brady had his shot throwing. He was off. He was scared.

  97. Adrnagy Says:

    Offense. 2 Fg. One missed.

Our defense put us on a hole. Due to offense. And pulled us out. 4 Turnovers.

  98. firethecannons Says:

amazing we won 14 games spent so much of the season very injured ok for reg season but it don’t work in the playoffs yet we almost won tonight todd bowles needs to be changed out–hope we get Brady back and Bowles gone and special teams needs to be blown up

  99. Bucsfan951 Says:

Lamarcus is a punk $ss that I would travel from SoCal to see on ghetto &ss fremont to confront. You ain’t nothing but a Vegas punk that thinks he’s something bigger than what he is. I’ll be out 1st weekend in June. Come meet me! Four queens! At the bar. Bet you won’t come out!

  100. Laurie White Says:

The 2 kickoffs really hurt our defense. Not once but twice he kicked the ball out of bounds. That field position puts your defense in a bad position. I dont think the team played with urgency especially rh offense.

  101. Laurie White Says:

Brady played ok. I was more frustrated with Gronk. He did not have a good game. Brate and miller were horrendous.

  102. unbelievable Says:

The Bucs have a streaky pass rush.

Some games it shows up, other games it’s nowhere in sight. Today was the latter.

And the blitzes haven’t gotten home either. At least not against any good teams.

  103. Swampbuc Says:

The more I smolder on the last 30 seconds the angrier at Todd’s Bowel I get. He was trying to be the hero, creating a game winning turnover. You know that’s what he was thinking.

Fargin arrogant stubborn idjut. Joe said it – that was criminal.

  104. PassingThru Says:

Don’t blame JPP, he was a wounded warrior. And even in his impaired state, he’s a better player right now that JTS.

  105. Snoman Says:

Adaragy you seem special. Brady didn’t play scared. He was harassed all day. Did you actually watch the game? Several times he was getting rid of the ball in under 1.8 seconds and still taking hits. Offensive play calling in the first half was horrible. Needed more screens, runs, and chipping to get the offense moving. We also should have started in hurry up. First two series were horrible with drops and Brady made a bad throw too also. Poor game plans doomed us. Blitzing early in the game and then on the last series against Stafford was the worst mistake that could have been made by our coaching staff.

  106. Eddie Marz Says:

Tough way to lose. Can’t imagine being there and going from euphoria to depression. Thanks for the run team! GOBUCS!

  107. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

We didn’t blitz and Stafford was still finding open receivers and front 4 weren’t getting any pressure all game. If he didn’t blitz in the end and they still made it you clowns would be crying why didn’t he blitz??? He’s not out there missing tackles, getting penalties blowing coverages. The players are the biggest reason for the loss, they know the system but yet gave up big plays that shouldn’t have been given up.

Shaq was fine. JTS, was non-existent. Nelson looked hurt still. JPP, sadly does look done.

Did Devin White dress for the game? Asking for a friend.

Exactly Swamp. He selfishly was trying to be the hero and blitz when the Rams didn’t expect it. Meanwhile, anyone plugged in knows Stafford is deadly against the blitz. It was more risk than reward. I laughed to myself when I heard AB say that there was nothing wrong with him mentally. I thought it was the dumbest thing I have heard until I heard BA say that the blitz was the right call but the guys didn’t understand the “cadence” of the blitz. So, they didn’t understand the timing of the blitz but that’s the play we dialed up? There’s no way that’s true but if it is the players not knowing would be an even larger indictment on Bowles. Either way Bowles sucks testicles. There is no defending that incompetent decision. The fact that BA is doing it is sad. It’s weak and it’s sad. Bruce is all talk when he says he holds the coaches accountable. I have not seen it at all. Coach how you think is right but don’t BS me Bruce.

Did we watch the same game? When we played coverage his completion percentage dropped, we kept guys in front of us and actually made a few tackles and all our turnovers that way. Blitzing allowed big plays just about every time and guys got beat routinely for huge gains.

Bills just lost to the Chiefs in very Todd Bowles fashion. Mahomes and co. marched down the field like practice. The combination of bad playcalling and D exhaustion.

Josh Allen, Tom Brady. Both deserved to win today.

  112. EA Says:

Joe, when are you typing the article about the Oline edges being Supersoft ??

  113. Pelsbuc61 Says:

The defense next year will look very different and DWhite should be traded. The offense will be useless without Brady.

  114. kyle Says:

have to give credit to the rams. brady had no time the whole game

  115. Lesko_Brandon Says:

Get Brian Flores a DC and ship Bowles outta here !

If Hainsey isn’t better than a gimpy Wells, why is he on the roster?

  117. Ben Harvey Says:

Need to look for help in FA. Top many other draft needs. JPP may be done and I think the Bucs should only consider signing him for a bargain price.

  118. steele Says:

HomerS, the Belichick formula emphasizing secondary over pass rushers was, in my opinion, problematic in NE, after some of the original great pass rushers and D talent that were Bill Parcells’ guys got older and phased out. After that, Belichick rarely fielded Ds with great pass rush, and those bend-not-break defenses got increasingly worse up front. Bottom line, need both secondary and pass rush to be topnotch.

Vea, Suh, Nacho… didn’t pressure either.

As much as I love jpp he has to go… Don’t pay another season for that guy!! He’s just been in the game too long for that position and has overcome injuries that I can’t think of any player overcoming and still playing at a high level … Until this year jpp was the iron man .. this year, age and all those injuries finally caught up to him… Keep Barrett! That brace and injury were OBVIOUSLY affecting him but he’s still got a couple really good seasons in him… And I’d bring back Nelson for sure too!! That dude is getting better every year …. I know everyone in here loves to talk about JTS but I never saw one game that he made a true impact!! …. Trade up this year and dangle someone good and future draft picks to move up and get an edge rusher for the other side of Barrett…. But really when it all comes down to it .. Todd Bowels lost that game!! You send a zero blitz when there’s 30 seconds left in the game and leave kupp one on one with Winfield while bunting and white stand there doing nothing!?! … This one is on bowels!!

  121. Ed Says:

@Jerry that the season was a failure. Objectively, it wasn’t, but it does feel like that. That is the burden that Brady carries: anything less than a SB win is considered a failure. It is also why I think he should retire. Everybody was excited all the starters returned, but they were decimated by injuries and AB quitting on the team.

As for who to blame, entire team was outplayed, but what about the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, and special teams: missed field goal and 2 kickoffs out of bounds.

  122. Ed Says:

Further comment. I understand the anger at Bowles about the last play, but that clearly wasn’t the only reason for the loss. The Bucs we’re outplayed in the trenches on both sides of the ball. The pass rush that dominated the playoffs last year was missing all year. To me that is the number one thing that needs to improve (along with getting offensive weapons back from injury).

For sure you will face outstanding QBs in the playoffs, and will be destroyed without a good pass rush. FWIW, I still am not convinced Stafford is a SB winning quality QB, but the lack of pressure and soft coverage from the Bucs made him look unstoppable.
