The Dreaded Phone Call

December 29th, 2021

Interim coach Harold Goodwin.

We all know the feeling and it isn’t fun.

There are certain phone calls, whether in the dark of the night or from a certain someone or somebody, when you recognize the caller or the number and you know the call isn’t good.

Bucs run game coordinator Harold Goodwin got that call yesterday morning. And he said he felt the dread “in the pit of my stomach.”

It was Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians. Why did Goodwin fear?

Goodwin said Arians would see him in the office. So why would he be calling him with good news? Or to go over strategy? He would see Goodwin at work.

But it was Arians who told Goodwin that Arians “had a problem” with the COVID and tested positive. Until Arians is back — Goodwin said it’s possible Arians return Sunday at the Jets — Goodwin has the keys to the Bucs.

Goodwin emphasized nothing will change. Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich will run the offense. Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will run the defense.

And Goodwin mentioned how the coaches won the Super Bowl last year, so they know what they are doing.

Goodwin said the only extra responsibilities he will have if Arians isn’t back is fourth-down decisions and other key calls in the game. The nuts and bolts of the game will continue as normal under Leftwich and Bowles.

“This is BA’s team,” Goodwin said. “This is the players’ team.”

Just stand on the sideline with no expression on your face and occasionally challenge a play.
    Good to go.

I hope he’s a little more daring on special teams. I’d really love to see the Bucs block a punt.

—..or go for two (with fingers up), and get nothing; 😜

  4. Onetrickpony Says:

Will he be riding in BA’s golf cart?

  5. Listnfrmafar Says:

Does he get to wear the Walkman? He can’t be any worse on timeouts. So what this post is doing is confirming BA does nothing.

No, this is all Brady and I am good with that.

Maybe get to cuss a little at the press conference…

I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see the Bucs give Goodwin the head coaching job over Leftwich or Bowles whenever Arians retires – assuming there’s still a choice between those 3 when that happens which is probably unlikely.

Leftwich hasn’t really been a coach that long, and Bowles failed pretty hard in his one shot as a head coach, granted it was with the Jets but it wasn’t pretty at the end of the day

Lots of changes coming this offseason
