NFL Network: Despite Injury Designation, Jason Pierre-Paul Will Not Play Sunday

December 24th, 2021

NFL Network has an update.

Now this is interesting.

Earlier this afternoon, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians stated only two players are ruled out of playing Sunday. That would be receiver Mike Evans and safety Antoine Winfield.

The NFL Network claims there is a third starter who won’t suit up Sunday at Carolina. And that would be outside linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul.

On a news update on NFL Network this afternoon, insider Ian Rapoport discussed what is going on with Mike Evans and other injured starters. And at the end of his report, he tossed in the following nugget:

“No Mike Evans and also by the way, no Jason Pierre-Paul,” Rapoport said. “He is listed as ‘doubful.’ He’s not going to play.”

So if JPP isn’t going to play, why did Arians not mention him as being out? Sounds like Rapoport is getting tipped off by JPP’s agent.

Joe isn’t against this. JPP is dealing with a torn rotator cuff and doctors told him months ago the only way to heal himself short of surgery would be rest. Instead, JPP, warrior that he is, is trying to play through it.

As a result, JPP’s numbers have fallen off dramatically. He hasn’t had a sack since the win over the Bears on Oct. 24. Only once since the Bears game (at New Orleans) has JPP registered more than one quarterback hurry (two). Only once since October has JPP had more than one quarterback pressure in a game, and that was the win over Buffalo two weeks ago when he had two.

So if what Rapoport reported about JPP happens, it will tell Joe the Bucs are going back to the original advice of doctors and likely shutting JPP down for the regular season in hopes it can ease his pain for the playoffs.

Joe has seen very few players with the heart JPP possesses and plays with. Ultimate warrior.

As much as I respect JPP’s grit and determination, this should’ve happened sooner rather than later. A warrior that can swing his sword is worth more than a warrior that can only raise it.

  2. kyle Says:

repect and love JPP, time to let tryon play

  3. Beeej Says:

Good to give JTS some time against lesser teams to practice his run defense

  4. adam from ny Says:

yeah rest him for the playoffs….it’s okay…

and wicked unis make for wicked players…

let’s get some of this pewter power back…

what…did we rock the pewter like once this year?…what the hell

  5. adam from ny Says:

the team’s gotta get that wicked, savage edge again…

put ’em in the all pewter – our most wicked uni

  6. Listnfrmafar Says:

Good move. Minter & Gill coming to town.

  7. Iamabuc Says:

I’m with you, Adam. Love them uniforms! We should see more of them.

  8. DoooshLaRue Says:

The all pewter unis would look better if they changed the red and white leg stripes, it’s too much.

  9. Francisco Guzman Says:

What’s going on here? This is insane. Ughh

  10. gotbbucs Says:

Number 1 seed is long gone so might as well rest as many guys as they can.

  11. Mort Says:

JTS should be playing. Get some valuable experience before the playoffs so the coaches have more tape to work with as well. A great move all around.

  12. Kgh4life Says:

JPP has been a nonfactor the entire season so the Bucs aren’t losing anything. The positive side is that Joe Tryon will get more playing time.

  13. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Too little too late. Should’ve been resting during our games with apparent weaker opponents. JTS would’ve had valuable experience by now. Proof has been in the pudding for a while. Shouldn’t have listen to JPP should’ve shut him down. Now he’s more damaged and who’s to say 3 games rest now is going to help?

  14. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    I love JPP too!

Looks to me like circumstances have dictated what some fans have been calling for. Many of our starters will be seated and rested for the next three games. We will use the rest of our available starters plus the backups to gear up for the playoffs.

In theory we will only have one “must win” out of the last three games in order to get there as a wild card entry if I understand the situation correctly.

    Go Bucs!

  15. Nano107 Says:

    Win out
    Home advantage rest everyone

  16. Beeej Says:

We’d have to win out, Packers lose 2 of 3….unlikely

  17. lambeau Says:

Poor leadership by Bruce letting ineffective JPP demand to play.

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Let JPP get a much needed rest.
He has not been that effective anyway, with his injury.
Let JTS get some more game experience, maybe even rest JPP until the playoffs ?

  19. JGhotier Says:

Should’ve bit the bullet and did this a LONG time ago

  20. rrsrq Says:

Did the Bucs bring up anyone to replace reserve O’Connor, isn’t he out as well

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs injury list reads like a train wreck. Can’t wait to see what kind of team we field on Sunday. Something tells me they will play all out though and win.

  22. Pewter Power Says:

They should have shut him down a month ago when that stupid highest paid plays the most snaps comment was made. Three weeks isn’t going to get him back to dominating.

  23. westernbuc Says:

I don’t understand what the benefit is of his agent sharing this.

  24. Wild Bill Says:

Jpp has a huge heart. Hope this isn’t his last year.
