Mike Evans Likely A Gametime Decision

December 31st, 2021

Bucs WR Mike Evans.

The once-deep Bucs wide receiver group is damn near shot.

Joe already brought word that furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing receiver Antonio Brown may have “tweaked” his bad ankle. There is also a chance Mike Evans, who was activated today, could miss Sunday’s game against the Jets.

And of course, Chris Godwin is done for the year with a blown knee.

Today in his press conference, Bucs interim coach Harold Goodwin said Evans’ availability is likely a gametime decision — a group decision.

“He is out there today,” Goodwin said of Evans practicing this morning. “There is a chance he may play. At the end of the day it may be a gametime decision between myself, Jason [Licht] and if BA is around he most likely will be part of that decision as well.

“Mike looked good today so hopefully, cross our fingers, he might be out there.”

Now you may ask why Arians wouldn’t be the shot-caller if he is in New Jersey on Sunday. In Joe’s eyes, it’s simple. Arians was home this week. Goodwin was at practice. He watched Evans, spoke with Evans. So he has first-hand knowledge of what Evans can and/or cannot do, though Joe suspects Arians has watched all the practice film.

It’s mindblowing to Joe that the Bucs may be down all three of their top receivers Sunday.

    He plays!

How many times in Evans’ career have we heard this…..and he always seems to play……I somehow think AB will play also…but WTFDIK.

  4. PanhandleBuc Says:

I am willing to bet that Evans and AB will play! Snaps will be conservative however. Should be a run heavy game either way.

    AMEN to THAT!

If this is what Mike Evans wants, and if he’s healthy enough to play, throw every pass his way. Extend the record. He’s earned the right to decide.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

Rest him! We beat the Panthers 32-6 last week. I am really not sweating the NYJ without him, but any given Sunday.

  8. Bird Says:

Throw every pass his way? For a stupid record nobody cares about? Nah, how about we try and keep him healthy for the playoffs and if he happens to extend the meaningless record so be it.

This team is in serious doo-doo if these injuries continue. They need this game and hope the rams lose. I feel like they need two home games at this point instead of facing green bay in the divisional round.

If everyone is out, I’m not even sure I’d play Brady since he’s going to be forced to hold the ball longer because guys won’t be able to get open as quickly, and that’s when QBs get hurt. Basically the Bucs would be conceding that they’ll be the #4 seed, but at least that keeps them away from the Saints if they somehow sneak their way into the playoffs.

If Brady does play and Brown is out, then I’m putting Grayson in every single one of my daily fantasy lineups.

BTW, as a reminder, Evans and Godwin went down with 3-games to go in 2019, plus you had Brate drop a huge 4th down pass with 3 mins left in the Houston game, after OJ dropped a huge deep ball on the drive before that. The on the last chance drive, all Winston has to throw to is Perriman, who gets hit in the head, is taken out of the game, almost certainly had a concussion, Winston is down to Dare being his top receiving option. Then in the Falcons game, now with Perriman the only guy who is trustworthy, you have the now Pro-Bowler Matt Gay miss 3 FGs and lose the game.

What is with all the Bucs guys getting injured at the end of the year? Last year Godwin was banged up most of the season and didn’t do much in the playoffs. Evans got hurt in the Falcons game to close the year. The year before, Evans and Godwin were out. The year before that, if my memory is correct, Evans was injured. The year before that, Evans was injured. The year before that, Evans was injured – but Winston was determined to get him to over 1000 yards, so basically he just threw the ball to him on nearly every play, and on the catch where Evans got to over 1000 yards, he got injured.

Brady can beat most teams with backups when he has a week to prepare knowing he’s using backups.

  14. Oxycodoms Says:

No surprise ab injury prone . Looking forward to see cyril and perriman build a connection with brady leading into the playoffs

  15. Miller5252 Says:

I think Evans will know if he can play or not. He’s been doing hammy issues since the beginning. He knows what he can and can’t do. I said at the beginning of the year the Joes had their yearly Evans hammy story already wrote and ready to go.

My bigger worry is Covid. As we get to the end of the year, and not too many guys have had it, the worry is they start getting it come playoff time and we lose key people. How crappy would it be to lose a playoff game because Brady was on the Covid list. Spend all year working your butt off just to lose a game because of Covid.

Sit ME & AB……..playoffs are way, way more important..Without both of these guys –it will be one-n-done….
