“I Think That’s What Helped Us And Motivated Us”

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles

Sometimes players are surprised by what teammates reveal.

That seemed to be the case with manbeast nose guard Vita Vea. Appearing on the Buccaneers Radio Network yesterday, Vea sounded a bit uncomfortable when asked about defensive coordinator Todd Bowles ripping into his defense at halftime Sunday.

Vea wanted to know who told host Casey Phillips about Bowles issuing a stern message. Phillips let Vea know that Carlton Davis and others had put it out there publicly, and that seemed to appease Vea and he talked a little about Bowles’ halftime impact.

“I think that’s what helped us and motivated us,” Vea said.

The Bucs defense allowed just 10 points in the first half, but they certainly were carved up for a lot of yards and their run defense was sloppy at times. Vea said Bowles’ message was taken to heart strongly, in large part because he’s normally very laid back at halftime.

Vea added that Bowles is a hell of a trash-talker, and a player can’t fire back at him because they will lose. Vea explained that you can succeed by ganging up on Bowles with teammates.

“The more the merrier,” he said.

Pete loves tidbits like that. Had no clue he could out trash talk the players. Wisdom i guess

That’s how you get head coaching jobs. I did see Bowles drop the F bomb when Davis held on the 3rd & 14.

I would love to hear some of his trash talk!

I know what you mean VV; A Sleep.
Yeah, they alternate between him and BA. Bruce got that square electronic box on top of his stomach, which when he is a wake he think is that old fashion wired TV remote control ’60 – ’70, trying to change channels…. he wants to watch Cardinals….you know nostalgia…but then.. back to sleep. puff.

Former free safety for the WFT so I kind of expect it, the trash talk that is.

I agree with you Pete. The “tidbits” make it more interesting. If only they could get the “talk” pre-game!

  6. David Says:

The DBs have got to play tighter coverage. Davis was awesome though.
The run defense stepped it up big time after that first Drive and those 2 big runs.

That’s the kind of insight that changes fans minds. That’s good stuff Joe. It’s easy to be hard on Bowles but each and every game he makes the halftime adjustments that lead to us playing nearly flawless defense in the 2nd half. Why does it take that though? Where is the 60 minutes defense we got from last year’s playoff run. We all felt that defense would build on last year’s success. However, it’s fair to say that Todd’s been given a cruddy hand with the amount of injuries and it’s also fair to say they have performed admirably under those conditions. We have still too much talent especially on the D Line to just perform admirably. As SMB and CD3 get their sea legs, I could easily see this defense getting better and then Todd can get showered with the love he probably deserves.

I thought Bowles is just taking a nap every game. Good to see that Bowles has a fire inside him. GO BUCS!

  10. SOEbuc Says:

I think those kinds of questions are stupid. No one is going to tell you anything close to what he actually said or how it came off to them and the rest of the team.

  11. Listnfrmafar Says:

cmurda, hasn’t changed my mind, I think he still sucks.

TB makes the defensive play calls! But it’s the players that have to execute, tackle, sack, pressure, make big plays! Sometimes the coach got to light a fire 🔥 under their ass!! Good for BA.. Good for the team!

Great story Joe, love the little peeks into what is said and what people think. Cool about our trash talking DC!
