Tom Brady Admits He Could Have Held Ball Longer

November 21st, 2021

Looks back at loss.

If was baffling to just about anyone who watched last Sunday’s game to see the Bucs virtually give up trying to throw deep on the NFL’s No. 32 pass defense.

This happened despite Tom Brady only getting hit once. This despite the Bucs having one of the better deep passing offenses in the game. This despite Mike Evans and Cam Brate getting open several times.

Instead, Brady targeted Playoff Lenny in the passing game as if Brady’s life depended upon it.

After the game, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians admitted Brady dumped off the ball too quickly on a few throws rather than hanging on and targeting a receiver deep.

Brady didn’t really contest what Arians said.

“There [are] definitely some throws that I wish I should held on to the ball longer to throw the ball, more intermediate passes I would say,” Brady said yesterday. “I have to do a good job of getting the ball to the guys who are open and just putting us in a position to find the open guy and make a good throw. I can certainly do a better job at that than I did last week.”

The only thing Joe can come up with as for why Brady didn’t do that is the lone hit he absorbed, which was on the first possession, Brady was either terribly rattled by the hit or got injured.

Otherwise, it makes no sense for Brady to turn into Checkdown Charlie with guys open downfield.

I will be there tomorrow night with some cooler temperatures

Their record at home is amazing and hope it continues. Even with a battered secondary. Go bucs!

  2. Tamlpabaybucfan Says:

    We will never know.

  3. August 1976 Buc Says:

No matter what is said, Tom was affected/ distracted during the WFT game.
We have never that version of TB12, Pop Gun Tommy.
Hopefully he will be normal again, that’s all he needs to be to win.
Normal for TB12, but that does NOT mean normal for most other QB’s that have ever played the game.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. Pruritus Ani Says:

Historically, Brady doesn’t rattle easily. I m thinking he may have tweaked something. Post-sack, many of his throws were off too. Shoulder, hand, knee? Can’t tell from the replay what he could have injured. Remember he played last year with a torn MCL and didn’t even limp.

  5. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Bucs play Giants

  6. RandsABucFan Says:

It sure looks like that hit made Brady gun shy. He was pulling the trigger early as if he was fighting the rush but if you go back and watch there were many instances Brady could’ve gone through his progressions. But it appears after that smear the QB hit he cashed in early and lost the time of possesion battle.

  7. alton d green Says:

Well I’m a career Brady fan since 2001 and I am totally baffled. sometimes we get “reasons” and “excuses” mixed up. they’re not the same thing. Excuses are usually something made up. Reasons are real. There absolutely had to be something wrong. That was TOTALLY out of character for Tom. He is a winner but you can’t win like that. “ON TO CINCINNATI”

  8. alton d green Says:

There are 2 games that were the biggest heartbreaks for Tom. The 2 superbowl losses to the rumbling bumbling stumbling Giants. They gave the Bucs all they could handle the last time. I get the hives when i hear Eli Manning and the HOF in the same sentence. That’s like Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahha hahahahahhahahha hahahaha

  9. BFFL Says:

OL was getting caved. He was right to get ball out and probably wins game if D doesn’t crap themselves. Sure there were maybe a few throws he could of held but that’s it.

  10. Jeff Says:

Bucs fans, we’re in big trouble. Teams are going to throw everything at Brady moving forward. One big hit and he turtles. And Todd Bowles is CLUELESS! He’s soooo stubborn! No more spot drop zone D. It’s NOT working. Mix it up!

  11. John Sinclear Says:

They went to Washington not wanting to waste time playing a meaningless game with a nothing football team. They were met by a team for whom a win mattered. The team that wanted it got it. Simple as that!

  12. Marine Buc Says:

Perhaps Brady lost confidence in our o-line after getting crushed early.

Wirfs and Smith played OK but Cappa and Marpet struggled and got their behinds kicked most of the game.

  13. Listnfrmafar Says:

Eli Manning had two SB wins before Peyton did. He also broke lose and made the pass that took down probably the best well rounded team ever. The guy is a winner. Back to Brady, what he says to the media is 90% false but this guy has never and will never throw a teammate under the bus, so if it was due to slow route running or separation issues we’ll never know. I am going with slight injury because after 22 years he is NOT getting gun shy from one hit. Agreed, on to the Giants.

  14. Will Says:

Is this horse dead yet? On to the Giants. Play well tomorrow night so we can read about something new. Hopefully it’ll be how we may have turned the corner and are now focused and not how Danny Dimes went crazy and shredded us.
    LFG

  15. Swampbuc Says:

The dude is 44 – not that surprising. This will become the norm, and I would expect him to dump it off a lot on Monday night. The Giants have played very good defense when I’ve watched them, especially their defensive line. They will have a pass rush. The Bucs have lost two in a row because defenses confused him and rattled him, pressured him.

Super Bowl hangover is real and potent.

  16. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

It is nice to have a QB who will accept blame, as well as praise like Tom Brady.
IMHO, that first hit on him changed the complexion of the game.
But we will bounce back tomorrow night!

  17. Listnfrmafar Says:

Opinions are like aholes and it appears we have a lot of them. How many times do you all think Brady played against a Del Rio defense in his career? Del Rio finally found the secret? Big surprise rush the middle force Brady out of the pocket, disguise the secondary. Maybe from time to time you get the fool me once but fool me twice not happening. He has also been dodging hits for years, learnt that from P Manning watching him when he played for the Broncos. Smart move, that’s how you play to 44. Unless you watched him in NE for many years, you don’t know how he operates and checking down is how he wins with right tools. Patriots are a perfect example of that now and how they doing?

  18. Beeej Says:

Brady generally isn’t capable of admitting to mistakes—it takes some time for him to get in the correct frame of mind to come to terms with it

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

Seems like he didn’t trust his OL after that hit.

  20. cover deuce Says:

10 yrs ago he didn’t like those hits and I can’t imagine they feel any better now at 44. Sometimes all you need is one – even the GOAT. It’s basically the story of his career that if you can pressure him with 4 down and drop as many as you can you’re gonna give yourself at least a snowballs chance. Don’t know why this is so hard for people to understand, especially against a defense that played him hard last yr in the playoffs.

  21. View from 132 Says:

The Giants Super Bowl teams won with a great defense and some timely offense. As a Bucs fan, I can respect that… it was a formula that the Bucs used for the last great run. Having said that, it has no bearing on this game. Brady is still playing, and every member of those Giants teams has retired. The Brady revenge game storyline is hype. Its just a game they need to win before they are looking at 3 road games in January … or no playoffs at all.

  22. Marine Buc Says:

    @ dooosh

Agreed. That first nasty hit on Brady early in the game must have really hurt…

Let’s hope Brady and our o-line can bounce back this week.

  23. Bojim Says:

Alton. Don’t quit your day job. As a comedian wanna be, well you know….

  24. Roster Says:

Don’t think it was about holding the ball as it was play design and scheme. Get the ball to ME13. Move him around and get the damn ball to your best players!

  25. Swampbuc Says:

The Panthers are carving up WTF. Washington is awful. We lost to them bad. Nice work boys.

  26. Irishmist Says:

The Panthers are tied with WTF right now. And the Saints just activated Caleb Benenoch to their roster and are losing to the Eagles. And the Packers are losing to the Vikings. It’s obvious there are no perfect teams right now. A 17-game season is a war of attrition and it’s all going to come down to who is healthy come playoff time.

  27. Coburn Says:

Intermediate is what I kept calling for. Don’t have to try and throe deep every time, but you also can’t dump off every play. When they are playing 2 deep safeties should be able to make some plays over the middle or with receivers coming back to the qb on the sidelines

  28. steele Says:

Brady gives enemies nothing. But it takes much less to throw off a QB who is as old as he is. Small tweaks, small pains. Regardless of how well he shakes them off, or tries to.

    This didn’t age well. Hahahahahahahahahahaha

  30. BT-Tampa Says:

As much as I hate agreeing with Medicated Pete, it may have had something to do with Mike Evans. It seems that he should have taken one more step before the cut (similar to the pick in the playoff game with GB). Had he done so, the ball would have been there for him instead of in the hands of a Washington D-back.
Yes Brady is that precise. He moved Godwin in just a few feet before one play against WTF and then hit him on the numbers. An analyst did a break-down on a similar play from a previous game.
Come on Mike, we are routing for you. Focus, focus, focus.
