The Bottle Of Cologne Smelled Fresh

November 28th, 2021

Monster play.

Joe has hammered this guy a lot, not personally, but his play. So when this dude made a play to seal a hard-fought, critical road win this afternoon, Joe happily must give the guy props.

That would be the guy Joe derisively refers to as the bottle of cologne, Pierre Desir.

Joe had never heard much of this Desir before the Bucs signed him off the street to play corner because the Bucs had so many injuries. Hell, at one point the Bucs were down their top-five corners — who keeps winning when they are down their top-five corners?

The Bucs do, that’s who.

Desir, Joe would have thought his name was a bottle of cologne a few months ago.

And just when it appeared Monday against the Giants that the Bucs would have their old defense back when Sean Murphy-Bunting returned from injury, and the Bucs defense in the first quarter today totally balled out like the defense we were used to, starting corner Jamel Dean got hurt and left the game.

All of a sudden, poof! In minutes, the pass defense crumbled just like it had in previous weeks, unable to get off the field on third downs.

The defense saved itself and the Bucs today with five turnovers (a sixth came on special teams), and maybe the biggest came from Desir.

After Playoff Lenny gave the Bucs what proved to be the game-winning touchdown and a 38-31 lead with 20 seconds left on a 28-yard touchdown run, Isaiah Rodgers of the Colts returned the ensuing kickoff 72 yards to the Bucs-32 with 10 seconds left.

Carson Wentz threw incomplete on first down. On second down, the last play of the game, Wentz targeted Desir at the goal line in the left corner. Why not? Desir was the No. 5 corner in the game’s active roster. But the play backfired on Colts coach Frank Reich and Wentz.

Desir made the biggest play of his Bucs tenure, a game-ending interception.

Yeah, Joe has not written good things about Desir because, damnit, he hadn’t given Joe a reason.

Today he did. And Joe offers Desir his deserved props.

What a sweet-smelling pick that was.

Way to go, Pierre! And thank you!

    Desir who?????

    👍

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Maybe we should be posing the question of the effort of the Special Teams???

    ….or the special teams coach??????

  4. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Watch out about saying ANYTHING negative about anybody on the teambecause the thought police won’t stand for it! 😅🤣😂

Ahh, the sweet smelling fragrance of the NFL, makes a play,

  6. WalkdaPlank Says:

Wasn’t it Desir who whiffed on the kick return that prompted his INT in the first place? He did make a nice hit on a screen earlier in the game though. Surprisingly I think Sean Murphy-Bunting was the worst CB this game. Aside from that nice hit he landed at the line of scrimmage he played awful and drew two huge PI calls.

Joe loved Scotty Miller’s fumble recovery too.

Ssshhh! Joe’s trying to be positive for a change.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ WalkdaPlank

EXACTLY!!!!!! Thank you for say this…..

Desir is just like the rest of out backups CBs………holding on for dear life hoping they don’t get burned by the other teams starters on offense…

Hell………….I’d nominate Todd Bowles for coach of the year and his whole defensive staff for making something outta nothing for a depleted secondary!!!!

  10. Buccos Says:

I think Dee Delaney and Pierre Desir were great signings by Licht. They aren’t going to the Pro Bowl but we are still 8-3 with them playing a lot. I believe that they are both veterans and they will both be getting Super Bowl rings this year if our starting corners make it back.

Each game that goes by TBBF becomes more impressed with Mike Edwards

  12. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Tampabaybucfan

    Ditto!!!!

It just seems like he makes splash plays right at the times we need it.

  13. Francisco Guzman Says:

The BucsAnthem you think it’s gonna get better with carlton davis back? They had a starter and he got burned left and right.

  14. kgh4life Says:

Why can’t the DB coach tell Desir to stop giving up so much cushion in coverage? It boggles the mind that on 3rd and 5 Desir gives the wr 10 yard cushions. It’s pitch and catch for Wentz.

  15. Francisco Guzman Says:

Damn the packers look very good right now. Rams defense laying an egg. We couldn’t do anything against them.

  16. Joe Says:

Better to get burned giving up 10 yards than getting burned and giving up six points.

As Joe often writes, backups are backups for a reason.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We just need to keep on winning…..Packers or Rams will lose today & Thurs, Saints or Cowboys……Things look good for the NFC South right now….

  18. Listnfrmafar Says:

If Desir doesn’t pick the ball off Edward’s right there to keep him from end zone. Desir was horrible and WHY is Nelson dropping back into coverage. How can you all be happy when the D made Wentz look like the MVP of the league? Is Evan’s hurt or does he suck that bad? Why can’t a future so called HOFer have trouble catching a tipped ball? Was this like his 4th or 5th this year? Once again out coached and talent took over. Please sit JPP,.I know he is trying but man is he getting pushed around. Roger’s, Murray and Mahomes will score 50 against this D.

  19. Francisco Guzman Says:

A rams L doesn’t help much. I don’t see many Ls in the packers schedule.

  20. Francisco Guzman Says:

Packers might have a chance at that top seed.

  21. Derrick Says:

I stole your joke, but the walking, human, bottle of cologne made a big play to seal the game! Good on you, Desir!

  22. Anonymous Says:

If by now you don’t realize that the Packers are choke artists when it counts, you will never know. Also their BYE is next week.

  23. Darin Says:

Desir played better than murphy bunting. Maybe watch the player on every play before calling em out. There’s technology for that now. Way to make your old team pay Pierre!!

  24. dmatt Says:

Desir played dead n rolled over. What u expect other than him dropping the int that was right in his hands. What was spectacular about that play. It wasn’t a “you got Mossed play” but more of a “u got Tossed” an easy pass play. Desir was reluctant to pursue the runner on the kickoff which MEdwards prevented the td. Desir is a dud. Let MEdwards play corner, he’s an athlete n baller.

  25. Listnfrmafar Says:

Darin, your either French or like that his name starts with a D. I suggest you go back and stop & pause the game, Desir is the invisible man.

  26. Surfslowson Says:

I agree sealed the win, but he almost single handily lost the game. He was targeted and burned all day.

  27. FortMyersDave Says:

@Listnfrmafar: I think the dude is Haitian. Anyhow, like Joe I thought his name referred to a Paris brand of cologne or Euro designer clothing brand but the kid came up big when it counted. Gutsy win.

  28. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

The only place we can’t win a game this coming January, is Lambeau. We still have a chance for the top seed. Cardinals are frauds. Need for Green Bay to lose a couple more, somehow.

  29. firethecannons Says:

bet that was a fun plane ride home damn! good game!

Pierre Desir made a crucial play–shows he was focused at a critical moment. We need to figure out how the return man got loose for 70+ yards.

  30. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

He played well on a critical play. Props.

  31. D-Rok Says:

I, for one, do not care how the victory smells.

  32. Miller5252 Says:

Desir, great way to end the game young man! Just quit playing off everyone 12 yards. I got 80+inch tv, and when I can’t get you in the screen before the snap….. you’re wayyyyy to far off the guy! Haha

Bad thing when Arians was asked about Dean after the game, and he said it isn’t good. Let’s hope it’s not a broken collar bone or a destroyed shoulder. Hope he’s back by year end. He was playing a lot better then bunting.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Desir made the INT, so give him credit.

He also allowed an incredibly easy TD that he wasn’t even close on.

The guy is what, the #6 or #7 corner, depending on how you want to order the jobber depth chart, so he shouldn’t be on the field, but by gawd I hope he isn’t on the field again this season.

  34. David Says:

Just a friendly reminder to some of the perpetually negative and miserable people on this website… They won.

  35. ModHairKen Says:

Desir made a good play. Celebrate him.

  36. Beeej Says:

Would LOVE to see Brady hit the record for TD’s, etc, but a good running game is the best was to protect your defense

  37. Leighroy Says:

Desire is not good. We can’t keep celebrating these guys for 1 good play vs 10 bad ones out of 50 snaps. Otherwise the let’s go Brandon crowd is going to have to start celebrating infrastructure bills and we won’t be doing that now will we.

  38. VA Tom Says:

You guys are always making fun of Desir personally. You make fun of him and his name a lot, every article you write that mentions the guy. You called Jameis America’s QB for years, even tho he was a turnover machine. Maybe YOU can NOT make fun of Bucs players who are may not be stars, and may very well be on most teams practice squads, but don’t deserve their names sh&t on?

  39. Anonymous Says:

We have the worst special teams coach in the NFL it baffles me how he continues to keep his job.

  40. Listnfrmafar Says:

VA, and everyone should get a trophy. QTIP, quit taking it personal!

  41. Crickett Baker Says:

Why all the jokes about his last name when his first name takes the joke cake. You DO know what they call a dehydrated Frenchman?

  42. Purplepirate Says:

“Just a friendly reminder to some of the perpetually negative and miserable people on this website… They won.”

Friendly reminder…it’s not about this game.

Against a slightly better team, they would have lost. Needing a last minute game winning drive against a team with 5 turnovers isn’t a good sign moving forward. Take away the fumble on the punt return…a lucky break which rarely happens…they lose. Relying on luck isn’t a winning strategy.
