Shameful Defensive Letdown

October 31st, 2021

Jim Kelly II.

Look, Joe has been very, very supportive of the job that Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has done this year.

After seeing his defense get roasted on Opening Night, Bowles turned the defense around using some kind of witchcraft to become one of the best defenses in the league.

Especially when he had to work around so many injuries to his cornerbacks.

But today, Bowles’ defense got embarrassed.

When a stiff of a No. 4 backup enters the game after Jameis Winston went down early, and Trevor friggin’ Siemian throws his first passes since Sept. 2019 and quickly starts racking up points and punishing scoring drives, you got caught with your pants down around your ankles. That’s all there is to it.

Shameful!

Joe would singe any other stiff defensive coordinator who preceded Bowles for that disgraceful display today (and Joe thinks Bowles is a good coordinator).

That was just bad, man. That’s the kind of feces we had come to expect from lousy Lovie Smith or Mike Smith or even that jerk that ran the defense for Greg Schiano, Bill Sheridan.

Letting this Siemian guy begin the second half with a six-minute scoring drive? Really? Granted Siemian’s big play on that drive was a 38-yarder against the bottle of cologne, Pierre Desir, who stunk today worse than a biker bar in Palatka just before closing time on a Friday night.

And then on the slimy Saints’ go-ahead field goal drive, Siemian engineered a four-minute drive. Sickening.

No excuses!

From a slug fourth-string quarterback who hasn’t played in three years? The Bucs almost deserved to lose for letting this guy Siemian look like Jim Kelly.

Brady looked like Bad Jameis out there too

  3. Tackleblockwin Says:

We needed this wake up call. But still, pathetic, ridiculous, moronic, etc.

  4. Anonymous Says:

Can someone explain to me where D. White has been this season?

  5. Vegasbuccaneer Says:

3rd string against the goat. goat chokes. Can’t stop self-inflicted penalties that’s coaching we have a weak team in the announcers always think we’re better than everyone else

Champa Bay is officially over. Enjoy the worst traffic in America & oppressive heat for the rest of your lives

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Well

We all know this team was going to pay the piper now our later…..and it came today.

You cannot expect a team to win with backup secondary players……..cmon now people.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

It’s not hard to keep drives going when the refs give you first downs.

  9. Francisco Guzman Says:

They need to get healthy defensively. You can’t allow a backup to look good against you.

  10. Lamarcus Says:

Doesn’t matter the coordinator, coach, or players…..this has been the issue for years. Some kind of curse. We just can’t stop back up qbs. Since Monte Kiffin left matter of fact

  11. Craig Says:

I would lay the defeat at the feet of Devin White, he got half of the Saints’ first downs for them.

  12. Zzbuc Says:

Joe you really shock me with your comments!
First against TB12 then against Bowles!
    Who is next? ME13?????
We lost a game….. we played Bad!!

    That’s all!!!

Two weeks to rest and come back stonger!!

  13. Defense Rules Says:

By all means Joe please don’t mention the THREE turnovers by the Bucs’ offense or the team’s ELEVEN penalties for 99 yards. A very undisciplined TEAM performance. But heck ya, by all means please continue bad-mouthing the Bucs’ defense.

  14. 163Doubleplay Says:

Todd Bowles made Trevor Siemian a pro bowl QB. A defense that gave oxygen to the Saints drowning offense in the second half is just shameful and embarassing.

  15. Francisco Guzman Says:

Didn’t like the play calling to end the game. What in the world was the hurry? Why not run the ball. You still had a timeout.

  16. Francisco Guzman Says:

I expect this team to win this division. If they don’t it would be a huge disappointment and shocking.

  17. Will Says:

Yes defense looked bad. Now Joe make sure you also let Brady have it for his Winston like performance.

  18. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Looks to only three main reasons for this loss:

    1. Outcoached by Sean Payton again

    2. Penalties

    3. Playing Third Stringers DBs

  19. Defense Rules Says:

TheBucsAnthem … Agreed it wasn’t Brady’s finest game, BUT … overall he threw for 70% completions & 4 TDs. It was the fumble & 2 INTs that really sucked. Not the first time he’s done that against the Saints though. Good defenses tend to make a LOT of QBs look bad.

  20. Francisco Guzman Says:

This team has struggled twice already against good defensive teams. Falling behind in games due to this awful defense.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

You can keep blaming it on this guy or that guy Joe…but most of us know it was the penalties that lost the game for the Bucs!

  22. Bird Says:

Payton is the best coach in nfl unfortunately
Sucks he is in our division. Cant see the guy getting fired any time soon

He can win with Bridgewater, taysome hill, jameis or simien
Short passes to guys wide open sitting in pockets and dont turn ball over . let defense feast

Said it would come down to turnovers and it sure did
Defense sucks / penalties bad and brady didnt get it done
Its a long season. Everyone is overreacting.
Its funny to see the old messiah cult making an appearance. Cowards

    Dang i Hate the saints

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our offense turned it over 3 times……excessive penalties….prescription for losing

  24. August 1976 Buc Says:

Sugar coat the defense all you like, but when the Immortal Trevor Siemian comes in and has 3 straight scoring drives. Sorry The defense crapped the bed there.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  25. Bosch Says:

The Peyton Punks got 6 first downs by penalty. All ref judgement calls. Bucs turnover 3 times for 16 points. What,s the real story here?

BTW Joe. Feel free to substitute Peyton Punks for slimey saints any time you want.

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Second loss in how long? And all I see is whining about officiating. I’ll take 6-2 after 8 games. I’ll take a last minute chance to win at NO, a 5-2 team. Yeah, they played poorly. Yeah, they turned the ball over. Yeah, they got out coached.

They also won the Super Bowl.

Stop crying and whining. You sound like Saints and Packers fans.

  27. Christos Says:

The Defense is suspect all year. They play bad and too many penalties. After the Bears game last year the team was more disciplined and one of the least penalised. Now is one of the top on penalties again, i dont get it.Watching the NO team this year if you told me that their offense would score 29 points even with Winston i would be disappointed let alone with Siemian. Come on this is embarassing. Defense is below average, too many penalties you just letting them take the game. Dont get me wrong NO has a good defense but in the second half they only stop the Bucs 2 times, the final INT and with the holding call on Donovan Smith. Defense needs to get their head out of somewhere. They need to play better period, not even close to last year standards. Anyway Go Bucs, dont think we ll have a problem winning the division but you cant continue playing like that and penalized like that.

  28. DBS Says:

But let’s not forget to mention WHO most of the penalties were on!! Defense!! And after making a couple good stops who let them walk down the field after we scored to take the lead? of course aided by what? Stupid Penalties. But Brady was also doing his best Winton impression also today.

  29. rrsrq Says:

Simply 3rd and 5, you blitz but your CBS are 8 yards off the receiver, is that coaching, the players or a lack of confidence by the coaching. Simien barely completed 50% of hiss passes, bottom line was sloppy play and penalties

  30. rrsrq Says:

When we did have momentum, after driving for two straight scores, a holding penalty by #66 kills the momentum

  31. JA Says:

This game came down to the defense, or lack thereof by the Bucs. Insanely stupid penalties over, over and over again will cause any team to lose in the NFL.
11 penalties for 99 yards vs 2 for 10 will kill you most every time.
And the Saints being an overall better coached and talented defense hurts as well. I sometimes wonder if this overhyped D could sack a turtle on the run.
Going into the game the Bucs were the second most penalized team in the NFL. Something tells me me they now own the dubious distinction of being #1.

  32. Joe Says:

By all means Joe please don’t mention the THREE turnovers by the Bucs’ offense

Exactly! Did just that. This story is not about the offense. Already wrote a story about Brady’s turnovers. It’s all on the home page.

  33. Listnfrmafar Says:

Does anyone of you realize that last int meant nothing? Bucs were down 9 points ball on own 20 yd line with 1:15 left. Brady didn’t have the weapons to come back. How come no one is mentioning the lining up offsides by Nelson? Why was he even in the game. Oh by the way, thier David is better than our David. I’m sure Brady appreciates the look out blocks at the end of the game. No Isotona gloves for Oline this Holiday season. Also the int to Godwin, go back and watch it, he was grabbed making his cut.

    ———-

Yeah, stupid penalties like Gholston getting his helmet ripped off, not being able to see and running in the QB and then getting 15-yard penalty and an INT taken off the board. What a bunch of morons. You should know to stop, drop and roll if an offensive lineman rips your helmet off, the last thing you do is move forward in that situation.

  35. Rod Munch Says:

Listnfrmafar – Bucs were down by 1 point, kiddo. I appreciate the effort to be (hiv) positive, but you got the number wrong there.

  36. Coburn Says:

Ironically Im pretty sure if Jameis didn’t get hurt we probably win

  37. JA Says:

    Hey List——
The Bucs were down 2 points when the last interception was thrown.

  38. Bucschamp Says:

we prepared for jameis. We didn’t prepare for an unknown backup.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Winston would have beat the Bucs by worse.

Winston was on-pace for 224 yards passing, 4 TDs, and 160 yards rushing.

Actually, it was more than, but I didn’t further breakdown by the number by the minutes left in the 1st quarter.

  40. DBS Says:

Winston would have used his legs and picked our sorry ass secondary apart. The pass rush worked a few times but Trevor was able to still get away and make plays. That means Jameis most likely would too.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

Ive been saying it all year. Our redzone defense is awfully pathetic. Its not gotten better all year…….and I think the injuries at CB have been the biggest reason.

I think if we can get healthy we will see better days but the one redzone play that sticks in my crawl is the 1 yard run where David got blown up on a block. You just dont see him get blocked out of plays like that for that long……Im guessing he is still nursing injury. And hooing thats the case.

  42. Alanbucsfan Says:

Lavonte David doesn’t get off a block in end zone allowing Kamara easy score…
When you go -3 in turnover differential and have alot of questionable calls by refs go against you, you’re not going to win.

  43. JimmyJack Says:

Yes Alan. Alls we had to do it keep the turnovers at -2 and we may just pull that game out. Couldnt get it done.

Or maybe we can get one the other way but our defense had issues finishing plays today. Seemed like all day we lets sacks slip away.

  44. bojim Says:

Losing to a backup, backup? It’s on the defense. However, the offense could have done just a bit more.
