Todd Bowles Hasn’t Ruled Out Using Richard Sherman

October 1st, 2021

Small chance to play.

It seems unlikely that new Bucs corner Richard Sherman will play Sunday in New England.

Joe isn’t fully sure if this is just a little gamesmanship by Todd Bowles. But the Bucs defensive coordinator yesterday didn’t shut the door on Sherman suiting up.

Of course Sherman, the All-Pro corner, signed with the Bucs earlier this week. Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians all but said on Wednesday it would be very unlikely Sherman would play because he’s not in shape yet. This is the first time in Sherman’s career he didn’t participate in a training camp.

Even Sherman said he likely needs two weeks and thought it might be “foolish” to expect him to play Sunday.

Bowles suggested Sherman would only be used in an emergency, and given how the Bucs are still banged up at corner, Bowles wouldn’t rule out using Sherman.

“It’s still early [in the week],” Bowles said. “We’ve still got a lot of injuries to go over and everything else like that.

“But he’s practicing and we’re letting him learn some things, so in case he has to, he can go out there and function at a high level and do the right things.”

Well, we know Bowles yesterday was putting heat on fellow corner Jamel Dean to suck it up and get out on the field. Carlton Davis, though he fully participated in practice yesterday, is nursing an abdomen/rib injury. And we know Sean Murphy-Bunting is on injured reserve.

Joe suspects unless Davis and/or Dean further injure themselves this week, Sherman will be inactive Sunday.

Bowles is likely leaving the door open more for gamesmanship than game-planning.

Make Belichoad sweat at the thought of Sherm pick sixing his rookie QB. Good.

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

Take it slow. Another great signing by Brady

  3. SB Says:

If we need him we are in trouble this week!

  4. Anonymous Says:

I’ll take an out of shape Sherman over anybody but Davis.

We basically play 4 rookie QBs in a row right now.
Let him get his feet wet while it doesn’t matter.

Then he is balling out by week 8.

  5. BillyBucoff Says:

Sherman was actually the 4th highest graded CB in the league 2 years ago.
    Let that sink in.
Top 5 CB still when healthy.

    For 2.5 Million.
Give him 2 weeks and our D might be lights out.
Especially when Shaqs predictions come true.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Why wouldn’t they “not rule him out”?! He’s going to get snaps in this game if for nothing but to get some feel.

  7. Vsyl Says:

Hope he gets some play time, but not more than a few snaps. It certainly would help him to acclimatize.

  8. B-Bro Says:

Patriots will hit our weaknesses and that secondary is a huge one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pats first play be a play action long bomb.

Yup. That INT video is everywhere. Not sure if a drill or actual 7 on 7 or whatever but you see receiver go by him and he is facing throw and makes pick

That is why sherman was so good. He was so smart. Was able to use body and the sideline and be physical. Cause watch his prior highlights. He was not fast by any means. I mean he almost looks goofy when he runs (not smooth).

And let him play the left side of field . He always placed left. Dont mess that up bowles

Even if Dean starts, his knee may cause him problems; if he’s not effective, do you really want to run Dee Delaney out there against Agholor? Not me.

  11. BucsCoolade Says:

Ya, B Bro.. and the first play on defense is a blitz of 8 guys to put brady on his ass.. haha

  12. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

If we get an insurmountable lead then – yea. Put Sherman in and let him get his sea legs.

  13. Tim R. Says:

If Sherman is not in game shape then don’t play him. Only he knows when he is ready.

  14. Greg Says:

@ BCoolade. If you blitz TB with eight guys you lose because he is throwing a TD.

  15. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

No way they rule him out. I would rather have a rotation of Davis @90% healthy, Dean @ 85% and Sherman @ 80% rotating in occasionally, than Delany (where is my man?) @ 100%

Cockrell and Sherman on the field back to back to back……school these kids!
