Feeling Strange? You Should Be!

October 10th, 2021

Our beloved Buccaneers are 4-1, Tampa Bay’s best start through five games in 16 years.

Yes, it’s been 16 years.

In 2005, the Bucs rumbled behind rookie running back Cadillac Williams and a smothering defense to a 4-0 record before falling to the Jets and Vinny Testaverde on the road.

But this Bucs team is far more impressive.

The stands were packed today at The Licht House, and there were not a ton of Dolphins fans in the house. As Joe wrote this morning, there’s a really strange aura pulsating through Bucs fandom, a new fan culture blending, confidence, disbelief and arrogance.

Joe is loving every strange second of it and hopes to get used to the new normal after another busy February.

The Bucs hit the road for quick-turnaround game against Philadelphia on Thursday.

Anyone think the Bucs will lose? Didn’t think so.

Great game to watch. Close in the first half. Brady looked a little off. But second half Brady was ON! Gotta give 4net props. Some tough runs. And he looked faster than usual. Maybe his best game since the playoffs.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

Glazers will use this momentum to demand a new stadium.

When we get the new stadium I hope they really go over the top with the theming — we need a private ship that is 6x larger than the current one, animatronics everywhere, I want it to really rival Disney World. We need to get something for the $4-billion price tag.

  3. orlbucfan Says:

The long lived Bucs educated fans remember being on the opposite side of these scores. Godwin is something else. He has the body of a great WR but he plays like a hybrid TE/WR. He and Evans have become friends off the field as well as on it. Fournette deserves the game ball.

  4. orlbucfan Says:

Nope, new stadium not happening. The Glazers got Tampa Stadium razed but not before they signed an ironclad agreement with the Tampa Sports Authority. In that deal, Bucs could be sold but not moved. It will be renewed.

  5. Wild Bill Says:

Looked like Brady was soaking his hand in ice water. If I read his lips right he was saying he hit someone’s helmet while throwing a pass.

  6. Rod Munch Says:

orlbucfan – When the Glazers and TSA did that $100-million refresh a couple of years ago, the Bucs refused to sign an extension as part of the deal. The stadium is already 23 years old and the deal expires in 2028. As for it being ironclad, I wouldn’t be so sure.

Let’s say they start the stadium talk next year, that’s 6-years before the deal is up — and you figure the entire process is going to take at least 5-years. So I’d expect to hear something soon.

But I’m just saying whatever we get for the next stadium, make it over the top. As for the public money nonsense, who cares, it’s all fake now anyways. Just print a few billion dollar coins to cover the cost, there, done!

  7. Youngbucs Says:

Trust me joe there’s a couple so called fans hoping we lose. You know the under cover saints lover’s.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs had 573 yards today – I didn’t realize it added up to that much.

That has to be one of the best offensive days in team history, probably top 10 I’d guess.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Oh wait, I wasn’t subtracting sacks – so we had 558 yards.

    Still, that’s #4 all-time.

  10. Mike C Says:

The fans showed up today! 4th down attempt was Huge in a tight game today. Proud of the energy in the stadium for a “lame duck” match up.

  11. rrsrq Says:

I feel strange because, I watched Brady throw 5 tuddies, Jameis threw 4 tuddies, Mike Glennon is in the game for the Giants and Blaine Gabbert was 4 for 4

  12. Dew Says:

I was a longtime season ticket holder but had to give them up a couple years back. Our stadium seems really really hot the last few seasons. If SoFi Stadium has an unattached roof why can’t we add one to reduce the heat at least some. I don’t support building a new stadium. We need an idea.

  13. Youngbucs Says:

This is the first time Brady has had +400yds and 5tds in a gm in his career. He’s 44 if you deny his greatest you’re a moron!

  14. Rod Munch Says:

    rrsrq – Wow, amazing.

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Do you mean….the stadium on Dale Mabry…..or the Licht House….or Raymond James Stadium….

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Dew – it’s no hotter than it’s ever been, you (and everyone else) is just getting older, and you’re losing your heat tolerance. Happens to everyone.

In fact temps have been quite a bit cooler, and it’s worlds better than the old stadium. The worst game I ever went to was the 97 opener vs the 49ers. I was burned to a crisp, my friend, who was a New Yorker, went to the hospital for sun poisoning. Wimp.

But any new stadium should have at least a partial roof, but considering that Trop will likely soon be torn down once the Rays move, the new Bucs stadium will be a very fancy dome – and a very busy dome, much like the Ice Palace.

  17. Buxszntkt Says:

Tampa Bay is not going to have a stadium that rivals Los Angeles. Small market and many fewer dollars in this region, also many fewer potential fans which also come from lower economic base. Our reborn fan base which accompanies winning may start to dwindle in life after TB.

  18. Rod Munch Says:

You guys are living in the dark ages. This is the new monetary era, where we just print trillion dollar coins to pay our bills. Using this amazing new process, we can buy anything we want and just print new coins to pay for it! It’s amazing, I can’t believe no one ever thought about it before! But I guess it takes a senile president to come up with a new idea.

But $4-billion, in 2026, would be like $500-million today due to inflation. But defeating inflation is easy, we just print more money! It’s easy.

So this new stadium, I want a huge water park as part of it as well, and a slide that goes from the upper deck down to the lake where our huge pirate ship will be located in the north end zone. In the south endzone we need to build a full replica of a waterfront village – and fully build it out, not just the facade.

  19. Listnfrmafar Says:

rrsrq, one point you missed, Jamais threw another int.

  20. Fredman buc Says:

Rod munch I like the sound of that!

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

The Feds are the only ones who can print money, not states and certainly not cities but don’t let the details bother you.

  22. DungyDance Says:

Dew – a few years ago they added an overhang to Joe Robbie (or whatever stupid name their stadium is now). Maybe that could work here. Anyway, back on topic, short week ahead for our turn on the league’s Thu night punishment circuit. Not sure if anyone in the secondary will be able to come back yet. But I sincerely hope Hurts will be saying it hurts to have Suh’s cleat up his arse.

  23. 163Doubleplay Says:

    Rod Munch… u rock !!

  24. DungyDance Says:

Totally off topic, but does anyone else get a little satisfaction out of seeing RedZone cut off the top of the FOX logo in order to counter Fox’s lame decision to move their scoreboard graphic lower. Ha ha

  25. sasquatch Says:

New stadium? Jeezus, why the hell are we even going there right now?

And, by the way, Munch, the spending you’re not-so-subtley referring to is planned to be funded by taxes on people and corporations who ought to be paying more anyway… to fund social programs that benefit society at large, children, the elderly, single parent families — like real America — instead of putting up 6 trillion in debt in the name of giant tax cuts for the richest Americans and corporations who didn’t need the tax breaks to begin with. Just saying.

…………….. The only reason Bucs are still here is the agreement signed between the Tampa Sports Authority/City of Tampa and the Glazers when Malcom paid a boatload of money to the Culverhouse heirs. Where are you from? That agreement is coming up for renewal. With the Bucs fielding the best team they have ever had, you think the renewal won’t be signed?

  27. Rod Munch Says:

DungyDance – I never noticed the Fox logo thing, but I get huge satisfaction out of having Red Zone in general. It’s really amazing, I don’t know how any football fan doesn’t have it — not that I want everyone having it, because if they did TV ratings would decline, and eventually they’d just add commercials to this and ruin it.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

orlbucfan – I know the agreements, I remember the stadium argument well. Just saying RayJay is going to be 25 in a couple of years, and short of a major reconstruction, stadiums really don’t last more than 25-years anymore. The Glazers will use these good feelings towards the team to start the stadium talk soon. They had a 30-year agreement that will end in 2028, and as I pointed out, building a new stadium anymore is a 5-year process. If I’m the Glazers, I’m starting to really play up that billion-dollar stadium in Atlanta, and start talking about we can’t compete without a new stadium, blah blah blah, all the typical stuff.

Just saying be on alert for it, don’t be shocked when we start to hear rumors about how the Glazers are unhappy with the stadium situation.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

The Browns just did what I can’t believe teams never do. The Chargers, up by 1, at the 1, and 1:30 or so left, the Chargers on 1st down just want to run the clock, meanwhile the Browns want the Chargers to score to get the ball back. The Chargers run the ball, with the idea that RB will stop and just stand there wasting time, the Browns players meanwhile grab him and throw him into the end zone. Now the Browns get the ball back with that 1:30 left and a chance to win.

  30. Listnfrmafar Says:

What the heck are you doing living in Florida?

  32. Steve Burke Says:

Just curious of who among you would consider trading Tom Brady straight up for Mac Jones right now. Basically, that’s what Belichick did….throw in Cam Newton too…

Hope Brady’s thumb is OK . His thumbnail was bleeding a bit after he got jammed. It picked up on it at the time

  35. Francisco Guzman Says:

This pass defense concerns the heck out of me and they need to keep winning because of seeding. Packers are 4-1 so are the cowboys.

  39. Jerry Says:

    Cardinals are 5-0.
Bucs, Rams, Cowboys, and Packers are 4-1.
    Saints, Panthers, Bears are 3-2.
Everyone else in the NFC has a losing record.

Cardinals are a bit of a surprise so far. Panthers had a good start. But everyone else is not really a surprise.

Just got to keep winning. It’s only week 5 of a 17-game season.

  40. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What feels strange is to expect to win……usually it’s just hope to win

We need to stack up 3 more before the bye while we heal…..

Our offense is in really good shape….maybe Gronk will be back Thurs…..

No offense to him but does anybody miss Scotty Miller?

  41. webster Says:

My god, the stadium for 3 offseasons 2016-2019 went through major upgrades that was part of the initial agreement with the tampa sports authority when the stadium was 1st built. Those upgrades led to the bucs getting the national championship and put the city of tampa back into the rotation of getting the superbowl which the city of tampa enjoyed this past season. The glazers are not going to ask for a new stadium as they have many modern amenities.

List you talk about the int for winston today but neglect to point out its 12 tds to 3 ints on the season in case you missed it

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We averaged 29.3 points per game on defense before Richard Sherman and only 17 PPG with him….

This is evidence that you can make a stat for anything…..relevant or not.

  46. firethecannons Says:

Joe! where are you with some new articles? Lol! Joe is asleep in a Bromosa haze. Joe is passed out, will awaken soon and realize the truth–Bucs wooped ass on the lowly Dolphins. Happy win!

  47. FrankPillow Says:

Eagles are MUCH improved. Losing 54 is going to really hurt. Classic trap game.

  48. webster Says:

Orlbuc…..i did not say what you posted. Dont put words in my mouth

  49. webster Says:

Orlbuc…i have no idea what point you are trying to make. What i do know as i stated the bucs and tampa sports authority spent roughly 160 mil over 3-4 (2016-2019) offseasons to upgrade ray jay. That was part of the agreement when the stadium was 1st built. Money was put in escrow in 1995 just for the upgrades that took place. So no, the glazers are not going to ask for a new stadium now as it is filled with modern amenities

  50. Beastmode2021 Says:

While I am routing for us, I cannot get excited about beating teams who have 1 or 0 wins. We talk about our injured secondary, but they’re just as bad. We still have time, so I hope we can pull this together for ring #2.

  51. Joe Says:

So no, the glazers are not going to ask for a new stadium now as it is filled with modern amenities

So long as the NFL continues to give the Bucs some Super Bowls and believes the stadium is up to date, there’s no need for a new stadium and/or upgrades.

But once the NFL deems the stadium out of date, then…

(Personally, Joe would like to see the stadium with a partial roof much like Joe Robbie Stadium has now.)

  52. David Says:

    1. Only 2 home games in the next 7 weeks (6 games).
Regardless, they should win every single one.
The toughest will be New Orleans

    2. I’m not sure why the stadium talk started, they’ve made great upgrades to the stadium over the years. The biggest thing they need is some covering for shade on the fans. It seems they could add that to the current stadium.

  53. webster Says:

Joe u are correct. When the nfl deemed the stadium was out of date, we won no superbowl years after 2009 and lost on several bids eventhough we were in a warm weather climate. Alot of new stadiums were built during that time and even cold weather cities ie indiapolis, new york etc won superbowl bids. Tampa is in the mix now for the next decade because the stadium is on par with the new stadiums that have been built due to our upgrades. In about 12-15 years, we will have to meet the standards again as will most stadiums. Adding a partial roof (would be a good thing) will be for buc fans and not for superbowl bids because superbowls are played in feburary. The nfl does not care about september games in tampa ie partial roofs. As of 2021, the nfl cares about wifi, hi def, seating compacity, hotels, etc when it comes to superbowls. In 2032 its a whole new ball game whatever that will be

  54. Jmarkbuc Says:

A team without a Defense is a team with no cajones.

Glad we’re winning… but this arena football style gives me the creeps. It’s all of the NFL.. not just the Bucs.

  55. Redsox/Bucs1 Says:

“A team without a Defense is a team with no cajones.

“Glad we’re winning… but this arena football style gives me the creeps. It’s all of the NFL.. not just the Bucs.”

JMark, you’re right. And teams like this rarely win come playoff time when defense again becomes a real factor. However, much of the Bucs issues are injury related and luckily nobody on the defense has sustained a season ending injury. So hopefully the offense can keep the train rolling and the defense can get healthy later in the year. In the meantime several back-ups are gaining valuable experience. And this defense has shown what it is capable of when healthy and playing well.

  56. Redsox/Bucs1 Says:

Why do all you weirdos want to talk about politics and stadiums? Who cares? Fire the canons, Bucs win!!!

  57. Rod Munch Says:

I’m just telling you guys, the stadium talk is going to start soon. When they did the last round of upgrades, the Tampa politicians asked the Bucs to sign an extension on the lease, and they said no. That was your hint of what was coming. Probably this upcoming offseason, or maybe the following year since that will be the 25th year.

As for major events, I seriously doubt we’ll get another SB until we have a new stadium or major renovation. Remember we only got this past SB because LA couldn’t get their place done in time, Tampa was an emergency replacement.

If I’m wrong, feel free to point it out and call me stupid and say the Glazers will happily go the entire 30-years of their lease without even discussing anything new.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    webster Says:

You do understand it won’t be large corporations and or the elite 1 or 2% of the weathy that will pay more, it will be the upper middle class. Until tax laws are changed the burden will not be on those of great wealth you mention in your post. If you choose, I can Venmo you your money and cut out the middle man.

    I would favor such changes.

If you choose, I can Venmo you your money and cut out the middle man.

One thing about favoring democracy, fairness, justice, and equality is that even people who won’t be the direct beneficiary of policy can support it, because it is the right thing. I can assure you, I don’t need your money or a government handout. I haven’t taken a government check except for tax refunds or stimulus payment.

    But thanks for playing along.

  63. Listnfrmafar Says:

Sasquatch, I guess no need to venmo you, it appears you have already received it. All you mentioned apparently I don’t qualify for even though I have a mortgage a couple of car payments and recently made my last college payment for my two children with ZERO help from the government and or fellow tax payers. Covid has effected the majority and yes I support a crutch through these hard times but would you tell your children to go borrow against their futures?
