Three Sacks = Bucs Win!

September 9th, 2021

Release the hounds.

Pretty cool story on a very good tell if the Bucs will win their season-opener tonight when they host frisky Jerry Jones and his Cowboys.

Veteran NFL scribe Rick Gosselin of SI.com dove into the Bucs pass rush and, simply put — and this shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone who watches football — when the Bucs often win when they are able to plant opposing quarterbacks into the ground.

In fact, Gosselin breaks down the sack totals of big Bucs wins — and paltry number of sacks in ugly Bucs losses.

The Bucs collected six sacks apiece in victories last season over Denver and Minnesota, five sacks apiece in victories over Carolina and Green Bay and four sacks in a victory over Detroit. Tampa Bay also sacked Aaron Rodgers five times in the NFC championship game and Patrick Mahomes three times in the Super Bowl.

But the Los Angeles Rams protected quarterback Jared Goff against the Bucs last November. Goff dropped back 51 times and threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns. It was the only game during the regular season Tampa Bay failed to sack the quarterback and the Bucs lost, 27-24.

The next week Mahomes dropped back 49 times and threw for 462 yards and three touchdowns. The Bucs sacked him twice but it wasn’t enough to prevent another 27-24 loss, this time to the Chiefs. The Buccaneers managed a single sack of Drew Brees in each game against their NFC South rival New Orleans and lost both times to the Saints.

So Joe started doing some math. Joe counted all of the sacks in the Bucs’ 11 wins, which came to 36. The Bucs averaged just over three sacks in each victory.

The Bucs won only two games when they did not sack the quarterback at least three times. Against the Chargers, the Bucs had but two sacks on Justin Herbert. In the final game of the regular season, the Bucs only put Matty Ice on ice once.

So it seems if the Bucs are able to bury Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott three times, it’s a safe bet the Bucs win.

Mark em down for 6. Load up that right side and run through/around whatever poor backups the Cowboys throw out there

The high amount of sacks is the fruit of constant pressure.

Like Mahomes under the most pressure ever in the Super Bowl.

A Rodgers found out twice last year what it is like to be under siege. It took 3 picks of Brady in the NFC Title game to prevent the Pack from being blown out twice last year.

Time to unleash the elite front 7 of the Bucs and dominate the Cowgirls.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

The Bucs can beat you rushing 4, but they also can and will blitz from everywhere effectively, with guys like Winfield Jr., White and David. There will be some sacks tonight!

    There will be a pick 6 !

@Joe … “The Bucs won only two games when they did not sack the quarterback at least three times.”

Not exactly sure what conclusion to draw from that Joe. Are sacks a better indicator of victory than say Turnovers or even better, Turnover Differential? Bucs had multiple giveaways in 5 of our 16 regular season games last year; we lost 4 of those 5 games (lost to the Saints twice, Rams & Chiefs, but we beat the Panthers).

And a key reason why we beat the Panthers in that 1st game? Our defense forced 4 takeaways while our offense committed 2 giveaways, thus we won the TO battle & ultimately the game. We either lost or tied the TO battle in the other 4. IMO Turnover Differential is just another indicator of how well we played COMPLEMENTARY FOOTBALL.

Six Dal sacks would be sick. I’d be happier with 3 sacks and two pick6’s
That link the frisky jerry Jones pic showed how billionaire can do anything they please. No matter how revolting.
Integrity. It’s what you do when only God can see you. Think that young tart has that picture in her family photo album? Perhaps framed and mounted in her living room? Sure, just like Monica Lewinski has her stained blue dress proudly displayed. Ugh…

Just give us a solid balanced defensive and offensive win and I will be a happy camper. And as an after thought, good kick returns, kick coverage, accurate extra points and field goals. Please dominate in all aspects. That is all. 🙂

Not mentioned much, is that White had 9 sacks last year, which was more than Shaq

You can also look at the other side of the equation. It’s also a safe bet that they’ll win if they score more than 26 points. That was the average of scores for losing outings (5) during the regular season last year. And that average is made higher by the inclusion of the 38-0 blowout to the slimy saints last year (unlikely to happen this year). The average score for winning outings last year was 36.3. So if we want to guarantee a win, let’s score 5 TDs and a FG. Seems like the 3 sacks might be the more sure-fire way to wrap this one up.
