The “Indescribable” Consistency Of Alex Cappa

September 4th, 2021

“Underappreciated”

This may be a first for Joe. Never can Joe remember a right guard being described as “indescribable.”

But that is the word Brandon Tamres of The 33rd Team used to describe the consistency of Bucs right guard Alex Cappa.

Cappa is a strong example of Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht sifting through small colleges to find jewels in the sand. Joe can’t name another player from Humboldt State, a school that no longer has a football program.

At one point last year, Cappa was leading the NFL in Pro Bowl votes for right guards. But Tamres lauds Cappa as being the most “underappreciated” player on the Bucs’ roster.

Cappa played extremely well for the Buccaneers in 2020, allowing 0 sacks. An outstanding number. It’s even more impressive when considering he had the most pass-blocking snaps on the team. Cappa also plays a very clean game finishing with just 3 penalties in 2019 and 2 in 2020.

… His consistency on the right side was indescribable for rookie Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay’s first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. Wirfs was able to play with a clear head knowing he had a steady, reliable player in Cappa alongside him.

At just 26 years old, Cappa has become an extremely important player on the Buccaneers’ offense. They are going to need him to stay healthy if they are going to repeat their success in 2021. Cappa is entering a contract year in 2021, where he has a cap hit of $2,381,426. Look for the Buccaneers to extend Cappa in the near future.

Listeners to the Ira Kaufman Podcast have heard about Cappa being flagged for so few penalties. Sometimes, that is damn near as important as being able to block.

Now Joe would not be shocked if Cappa left after the season, given so many teams having a dearth of talent in offensive linemen. Cappa might get a helluva raise if he hits the open market.

Besides, Licht has items to try to take care of this offseason like Chris Godwin, Carlton Davis, Ryan Jensen and coming right around the corner, Vita Vea.

With Aaron Stinnie waiting in the wings for work, it wouldn’t shock Joe if Cappa signed elsewhere for a deserved pay increase and the Bucs plugged Cappa’s spot with Stinnie. Both Cappa and Stinnie are free agents after the season. but as a backup, Stinnie is likely to be more affordable).

Joe’s a big Cappa fan because the guy is tough as hell. Remember how he played against the Saints with a broken arm? That’s old school throwback stuff. That also demonstrates Cappa’s character and work ethic.

Cappa is the type of player former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter referred to as a “glue guy.” In other words, a rock of a team’s foundation.

Didn’t Dick Stroud just call Cappa a turnstile? Smh….anywho, we’ll get Capps best effort in a contract year. And Stinnie is chomping at the bit

  2. Iamabuc Says:

The Bugs are who they are now because of this awesome line-up : Donovan, Wirfs, Jensen, Ali and Capps…. nobody does it better!! Damn , I’m so proud to be a Buccaneer and very proud of myself too for never having giving up on them throughout de dark ages. Fuuiii!….It was though, man. 😂

  3. Iamabuc Says:

    The Bucks…sorry f@cking Autocorrect…

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Take that $9m we just saved from Edwards & extend Cappa, give him a raise this year….will cost us less in the long run…..
Yes, we have others to resign but the cap is going up…..you can just about say goodbye to Godwin…not because we don’t have the money….but he will want more than Edwards & we simply just can’t do that.
Another thing we could do instead with the $9m is to extend Jensen…

We need to do everything we can to keep this young line together……all else will fall into place if we do.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

I can “describe” Cappa: The quintessential epitome of a Big Ugly.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Humbolt State…..in Humbolt County CA…..the “Cannabis Capital of the World”

    It’s no wonder they no longer have a football team…….smoke a little smoke…drink a little drink….no more football…….

  8. Ben green Says:

I’ll say it again, they can’t replicate the line play. Cappa had a career year
Several of them did. You won’t stay as healthy. This isn’t trolling, it’s numbers. The ones that manage to skirt the injury bug, will return to Earth. By week 7 y’all will be bitching about the play and health of your o line. Better hope JPP doesn’t host a fireworks party, cuz you will need every piece of that defense. Who btw also won’t play like they did last year. Your secondary will be picked on. Don’t shoot Ben, I’m just the messanger. Not to worry, you guys are 1000% all in, so maybe you can swing a trade or two

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Shoot Ben …….and put him out of his misery!

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

Cappa is a fantastic guard. It would be crazy to lose him.
Cappa, Jensen, and Marpet are the best interior line in the league- and it isnt close.
And the more they play together- the better they get.
Donovan has played fantastic this preseason.
Wirfs has been off. Hope he hasnt been reading his press clippings.
When on- they are the best line in Football.

  11. Mort Says:

No way we re-sign Godwin. He’s too good and he will want his bag of cash. Gotta keep Cappa. Stinnie is awesome, but he’s like five years older than Cappa and frankly isn’t quite as good. We will keep Carlton as well. But my dude CG12 is simply a luxury we cannot afford. I’m so sad about it too because he’s a freaking amazing player and a great dude.

  12. PSL Bob Says:

No way in hell I’d let Cappa walk. The o-line is key to the Bucs’ success. It protects Brady (or whoever may be at QB), and it opens up running lanes. The O-line was as big a factor in the Buc’s success last year as any of the skill positions, other than perhaps Brady. Let’s keep it together as long as we can. I’m sure Licht can find a way.

  13. mark2001 Says:

You are trolling, Ben…here and on a Brady thread. And as Brady is again the QB this year, I fully expect an O line performance every bit as good as last year.

  14. PSL Bob Says:

Can’t believe the love the o-line is getting these days. Seems just 2-3 years ago, everyone placed the Bucs’ poor offensive play on the line. What a difference coaching and a great QB make.

  15. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

What a find by Jason Licht! Joe can’t name another player from Humboldt State because Humboldt County California is known more for growing good Weed, than it is for producing good Football Players.

  16. mark2001 Says:

BTW Green ..that is what happens to an O line, when you have a QB that goes through his reads fast, sees the pass rush, and either completes the pass or throws it away. It is called knowing what the H you are doing back there.

  17. mark2001 Says:

Know what you are saying Chris…but considering Florida’s reputation “florida man”, cheap mobile home living, and such, you would think we didn’t have any universities, museums, fine restaurants. But we do, so a reputation often isn’t reality.

  18. gp Says:

    @PSL Bob
To be fair, a weak link or two have been replaced in that time frame.

  19. gp Says:

so a reputation often isn’t reality.
    ************************************************

    Funny YOU should say that!

  20. ManzielMadness Says:

Ben…Ndog… sorry you were wrong about the bucs, Brady and Jameis… btw unlike your boy Winston, Brady knows how to get the ball out quickly (something Trevor Lawrence needs to learn btw).

  21. mark2001 Says:

    Poor GP…still flailing and sinking.

  22. mark2001 Says:

I have been right on just about everything, haven’t I GP. As usual.

  23. Jason Says:

    “Captain Caaaaavvvveeee Maaaaaan!!!”

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

Licht has an uncanny ability of retaining his players. Championships are almost impossible to obtain. A paycheck isn’t everything because wise investments can double paychecks in a short period of time. I wouldn’t count on any Buc players bolting too quickly.

  25. JimmyJack Says:

It was a typo. He meant to say indestructible.

  26. gp Says:

I have been right on just about everything,
    ************************************************
Can’t hide your bias, can you?
Hard to differentiate you from Ndog on that point!
    Slurp slurp away brother

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Mark you are right about everything. Can be the new sheppard for us sheep?

  28. mark2001 Says:

No Bias ..just the facts man. And the ability to sort fact from fiction. Unlike some.

  29. mark2001 Says:

Jimmy…you can read, right? I said just about. That doesn’t mean I’m a shepherd..(I think that is what you mean by sheppard). Whether you are a sheep is up to other to judge.

  30. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

Ben Green with envy! GO BUCS

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can’t we all just get along?

  32. JimmyJack Says:

Mark somebody who is as right as much as you are does not come around very often. I for one do not want to squander this opportunity.

This is like finding the bird that lays golden eggs!!

  33. mark2001 Says:

TBBF…Would be nice…but GP has to put in a little jab at me every so often.

  34. gp Says:

    Geez!
Give a guy a compliment for actually hitting on a truism for a change and immediately I”M the bad guy?
You need to think long and hard about that truism and consider your own little reality. I honestly don’t think it will help you any but it’s worth the effort at least.

  35. mark2001 Says:

gp…you might want to read what you post…

“Can’t hide your bias, can you?
Hard to differentiate you from Ndog on that point!
    Slurp slurp away brother”

You are fooling no one but yourself.

  36. gp Says:

    Sure thing NMarkDog
Guess I could drop to your third grade level and ask if you’ve looked in the mirror lately, but instead I’ll just point out that you’ve made a name for yourself on MCJ for your incessant posts. Ever consider how irritating it is to find that thread gone when I get home from work and have time to read and post?
Pretty sure I’m not alone in being tired of your constant politicking and demeaning posts when it is obvious that you don’t research anything but MSM.
Dude! Take a week off and see if anyone misses you!

  37. webster Says:

I remember so many calling cappa a bust and calling for lichts head bemoaning that he drafted a d3 player etc. They said they are tired of licht “trying” to be the smartest man in the room. I told the arm chair gms to be patient and let cappa and the other young players develop. Funny those arm chair gms are silent. Btw…can we stop predicting godwin will be gone next year? You same arm chair gms said the bucs would not be able to bring back everybody this off season. I said then its very possible and BA is already on record as saying whats wrong with paying two #1 receivers? Let the real gm licht do his job while the rest of us just sit and watch the FO work their magic.

  38. gp Says:

    Tell ya what.
I’ll join you and nobody will miss either of us!
That’s JUST how VALUABLE our OPINIONS are!
You may be woke but you ain’t awake!

  39. Mike Says:

Gotta find a way to keep Cappa I think. You win in the trenches in the NFL. Worst case, you franchise tag him next year, but you don’t let him walk in FA.

  40. mark2001 Says:

Blah blah blah gp. Play the Dr. Jekyll role as much as you can. You get a reality check and the Mr. Hyde comes out. Like I said,..you just can’t help yourself. And you are only fooling yourself.

  41. gp Says:

    One week
    You shut up
    I shut up
    Deal?

  42. mark2001 Says:

And after that diatribe, you really think anyone would think your “Scarlett O’hara” moon and magnolia act, feigning that you meant nothing offensive and only meant to say a complement, was honest? LOL.

  43. mark2001 Says:

    I didn’t say a word to you…until you jabbed me with this…so a reputation often isn’t reality.
    ************************************************

    Funny YOU should say that!

But I will make you a deal. You don’t even comment on me or my posts, and I won’t yours. That is the only deal that makes sense. A week or whatever is really no deal worth anything.

  44. gp Says:

    One week of silence dude
Give all the other JBFr’s a break from your incessant badgering and “maybe” MCJ won’t be shut down

I get your reticence. Even you don’t think you can do it!

  45. mark2001 Says:

One week is a foolish and childish deal.

You want a deal, make it a grownup deal. You don’t attack me or my posts and I won’t attack you or yours. After all, I was pretty much not commenting on your posts anyway…until you couldn’t help yourself. Let’s see how “grown up” you really are.

  46. gp Says:

You want to be grown up?
Own up to “you can’t do it”
    One week of silence
    It can’t be that hard!

And, uh, I think I’m not alone again on calling BULLSPIT on your innocence premise of never attacking another poster!
    He11, It’s your MO!
Hate to tell you this, but you are NOT looked at as the “adult” in the room.
Insecure, ill informed, misled, misleading, irritating, immature, loud and obnoxious…..
Dude, just give it a break for a week!

  47. mark2001 Says:

    That is bull, Mr. Hyde…

Mrs. Smith… Johnny and Billy can’t get along, so they won’t go to the cafeteria and bring their lunch for a week… Childish. Grownups say, act like a man and just leave each other alone.

    How old are you? 15?

You either man up and act like a grown up and agree to leave each other alone…like grownups do. Or act like a childish Mr. Hyde. You sound pretty pathetic. Get some help.

  48. mark2001 Says:

So after a week, then what? Nothing but the same old garbage. What does that accomplish? Nothing. Only a child would think that would solve anything. So what would the point be? A foolish and childish deal.

Men say…we agree to disagree and leave each other alone. Too grownup for you?

  49. mark2001 Says:

Grownups solve problems…children put off and avoid solving problems.

  50. Buczilla Says:

I’m hoping that the cap is high enough next year to sign JPP, Godwin, Cappa, and Davis. However, unless Godwin has a career year and stays healthy for every game I’m taking all of those other guys over him. Finding good guards, corners, and especially pass rushers is harder than finding a good receiver.

If Godwin misses time again this year, that will make it three in a row. Let some other team overpay for an injury prone receiver.

  51. gp Says:

I’ve heard your arguments before, from a precocious 9 year old.
You are correct, only adults put children in “time out”.
I have offered an adult solution to a childish argument.
You have given nothing but childish arguments as to why you CAN’T control yourself for even ONE week!

You truly ARE a sad case.

One week of silence for the benefit of all the other posters and readers of JBF
Is that really too much for your feeble psyche to handle?
    **********************************************************
Grownups say, act like a man and just leave each other alone.
    **********************************************************
You see? There’s the rub. You pester and attack other posters incessantly and I’m just trying to give them a break.
I’m only offering to take a week off as well so you don’t feel all alone in your punishment.
I’m not the only one extremely fed up with the daily hijacking of MCJ and fully anticipate some suspensions and possibly flat out expulsions in the near future. Considering that you absolutely dominate the percentage of posts, and that the majority of them could be considered trolling……
Honestly dude, this is for your own good.

  52. gp Says:

    One week
It’ll probably do your blood pressure some good as well.

  53. mark2001 Says:

My offer stands… I will not to respond to you, unless you attack me. That is the adult way to behave. And Newsflash….You don’t make the rules on this board. Only a child would think so. It isn’t about punishment or reward..it is about acting like an adult.

And BTW…Your words regarding the comment above… “Give a guy a compliment”. It never was a complement. Your other remarks reveal your true thoughts. Just be honest with yourself, and don’t try to buffalo anyone…especially yourself.

  54. mark2001 Says:

Buczilla… this is probably the first time we have had to deal with the dilemma of having so many good players, we have to pick and choose which handful to keep and which handful to let go. Of course, it’s a good situation to be in…because it means we have a great team this year. Just abnormal to us. I do have confidence in Todd and Bruce to keep the pipeline flowing. The future looks so bright…..

  55. gp Says:

So the deal you want is “I leave you alone and you will leave me alone” right?

In the meantime you are unencumbered to pester, attack, demean, or generally bully any poster that doesn’t agree with you 100%.
And while you do that I should just stand by and do nothing?

Sounds like the deal our pres made with the tallybann so now we get to sit back and watch as any and all who were left behind suffer and die at their hands.

I prefer the deal our former pres made where they were not to advance from their little corner of the country. They were pretty sure he would defend that “red line”.

Sorry dude. I won’t stand by and remain silent while you disrespect others.
Granted, you have been pretty good at getting the thread shut down before I can take a break from work to post. Rest assured I will use every limited opportunity to call out your ignorance, insecurity, immaturity, and any other opening you give me to expose you for what you are… a troll.

  56. mark2001 Says:

Give it up GP. It isn’t your job to control my posts or anyone else’s. It isn’t your business… it isn’t your board. You don’t like them, or the rules here, go elsewhere. Grow up. I threaten no one. I don’t call them half the names you call me. Look in the mirror…dude.

  57. gp Says:

You are an insecure and disrespectful troll and a major irritant to honest posters.
You refuse to lay off so… Game On!

  58. Ben green Says:

Ben loves y’all, and I love me some TB12, but if you expect to get the same performance from the o line, then you need to be medicated. Not with weed or antidepressants, but heavy duty psychotropic meds. It never works out. Go look at the last 15 champions, Ben has. You’ll notice a trend the next season. It leads all the way to Kansas City last year. It’s not every year of course, but more often than not, teams had major o line problems.
Ben hopes Brady bucks the trend, but like Axl says, “I think we’ve seen that movie too”

  59. mark2001 Says:

    Grow up.

  60. mark2001 Says:

Ben…when was the last time a SB winning team brought back all the starters? And most of the backup players? And when was the last time a team won the SB in their home stadium? Just saying… if this offense is better because Tom knows the playbook and terminology completely, and knows his receivers better than last year, and has a Gronk and Brown with a full offseason of training and in the system, and Wirfs has had a full offseason and training camp, and Tom has Bernard to help keep moving the chains, it could be better. History doesn’t always repeat itself. Like Tom says, you work to keep getting better every practice.

  61. mark2001 Says:

And Ben…let’s not forget about Brown and Brady’s off season surgeries. And OJ Howard. Supposedly Brown looks like the player he was in the years he was possibly the best receiver in the league. And Brady is bouncing like he hasn’t in a decade. But I’ll leave it there.

  62. Brandon Says:

Forgive Mark and his ridiculously big head. His mask is on a little tight so in addition to his delusions of grandeur and arrogance in his ignorance, your head has actually grown from lack of O2. You’ve been mischaracterized as a sheep. You are most definitely a useful idiot and the Empire thanks you for your unquestioned loyalty.

  63. mark2001 Says:

    Brandon… another little child.
