No Depth Issues At Safety

September 19th, 2021

Record holder.

[UPDATE: 7:50 p.m.] If you are tied with Ronde Barber for a Bucs franchise record, you are doing something right.

And that’s the type of game that Bucs safety Mike Edwards had today. His two second-half picks helped turn around a way-too-close game into a curb-stomping by the Bucs over the Dixie Chicks.

As a result, Edwards joins Barber as the lone Bucs with two pick-sixes in a game.

“He’s a ballhawk,” Arians said of Edwards after the game on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

(On the FOX broadcast, they had Edwards tying Barber as the only Bucs defenders with two pick-sixes in the same game in franchise history. Apparently, that is just regular season records. Dwight Smith had two picks-sixes in the Bucs’ first Super Bowl.)

His first pick he jumped a route and damn near walked in. His second, he caught a tipped pass and jogged in backwards which angered Roger Goodell’s stooges in stripes.

Beginning in last year’s training camp Edwards began balling out. He played key down the stretch last year, forced into full-time duty in the NFC title game due to injuries and had a helluva Super Bowl as well.

While the Bucs may be thin because of injuries to their corners, the safety position for the Bucs is damn deep with damn good ballers.

[UPDATE: 7:50 p.m.] Yes, FOX was reporting Edwards tied Barber’s regular season record (notice Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com having Smith’s record in parenthesis).

Edwards became the first player in the NFL since 2012 to have two pick-sixes in the same game.

Secondary needs work or Stafford is gonna eat us alive next week.

  2. Jim Payne Says:

Until we show we can stop it, we will see a lot of quick short passes

  3. rrsrq Says:

He also caught Drew Brees last past

    Dwight Smith?

  5. Lee Says:

    Uhhh… Dwight Smith???

    Uhhh… Dwight Smith???

Bucs must only be counting regular season games. Good catch (notice FOX was reporting the same thing?)

  7. Casual Observer Says:

Didn’t a Buc DB have 3 pick 6’s in the first Buc super bowl?

  8. Casual Observer Says:

Yes, thanks, Dwight Smith was the name.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Bowles really clowned the Falcons today late in the game with his blitz packages. Every pick was a direct result of pressure on the QB.

Exact formula on how we win on defense. We dont have to smother you, we can change the game with big plays like Edwards today.

That said Im not happy with our redzone D today. We were picked apart today. If you can sign a Sherman or somebody else just to use for that part of the field then pull the trigger.

  10. Zzbuc Says:

If secondary keeps missing tackles like the first Two games we will be in trouble…Even Winfield míssed tackles today.
    I know a W is a W…..

    Deuce Edwards.

    Now, about the hair …

  12. orlbucfan Says:

How come Bowles missed Calvin Ridley? Where was a spy on his butt by the second quarter? He was a MAJOR reason why the Falcons didn’t look like cupcakes.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Edwards was playing CB on alot of plays, or my eyes are worse than I thought.
He has always been a ball hawk.
His coverage was really good today. He needs alot more playing time

  14. Wild Bill Says:

Brady looked great in first half. Defense put the game away in the 4th quarter. Where is the pass rush? Not much pressure until late in the game.

  15. cover deuce Says:

They really need to lean on those 3 safety looks going forward. At least until SMB can get right.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Barber single handedly won that ‘Matt Bryant you are my hero’ game with 2 TDs. He owned McNabb like I’ve never seen a corner own any QB.

  17. Taampabaybucfan Says:

Didn’t he have 2 pick sixes in a quarter…..has that ever been done?

  18. Darin Says:

    Wesley
Every weeks a different game plan. I still expect Stafford to have success in the first half. Bowles has been good at halftime adjustments tho. Who cares if Stafford lights em up if the Bucs win tho. Wont find me nitpicking i did my years at the old sombrero sitting and waiting for years like these
