Joe Tryon-Shoyinka Getting Love

September 1st, 2021

Former NFL suit notices.

A former NFL suit and a well-respected NFL analyst for ESPN seems to be jumping on the bandwagon of Bucs rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

Louis Riddick, a former defensive back for the Raiders and Browns (who was coached up by Nick Saban and Bill Belicheat) apparently is watching tape of the hyped Bucs rookie and like so many others is coming away impressed.

Now Joe was doing a little research of late and it seems the odds of JTS making Defensive Rookie of the Year are growing shorter and shorter by the day.

For example, JTS is currently +3000 at BetMGM to win the award and over at Bovada is +2500. Back in May, JTS saw his odds drop from +4375 to +3875.

Now the first thing you will ask Joe is, “Why would I bet on a guy who isn’t starting on defense?” Fair.

It’s almost certain that JTS will be on the field spelling snaps for Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul. And we know that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has packages devised to get JPP, Shaq and JTS on the field at the same time.

Also consider that the Bucs will be playing a fair amount of high-profile games this year. If JTS can shine when the lights come on, that will certainly boost his stock as a contender.

How friggin’ cool would that be, that JTS could be Rookie Defensive Player of the Year and not even start? And a pass rusher at that!

Joe needs to start chugging Big Storm Beer thinking of the possibilities.

  1. Looking at YOU! Says:

Great Karma, Brilliant coaches, a Fantastic GM, and actually a sizable bit of Luck that he was there for us at pick #32.

Call it what you will but I’ll just call it “Destiny”

    GO BUCS!

  2. Leighroy Says:

Yeah I’m excited for JTS too. While his performance was indeed impressive, you do have to consider the linemen he was blowing up this preseason were camp meat and backups.

He’s definitely passed the first tests tho, but the real bullets start flying soon against tougher NFL talent. I’ll stand-pat on any short-term investing, but for now, cheers to possibilities!

  3. Pine Hills Says:

To the tune of steely Dan’s famous tune
You go sack dak and do it again.
Cleat marks running up and down.
You go sack dak and do it again.

  4. Topdoggie Says:

To win one of the other two starters would have to get injured. No way he can play 20% of the snaps and get an award.

  5. JSmalls Says:

If the Bucs offense performs as it should opposing teams will be throwing a lot so he’ll get plenty of opportunity in the rotation.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Whew. For a minute when I saw that headline, I thought he was visiting Mr. Kraft’s massage parlor.

  7. ClodHopper Says:

He definitely has been really fun to watch so far.

  8. WiscoJoe Says:

Shed a tear reading this Joe. What a got damn turn around and what a time to be alive!!!!!

  9. Wild Bill Says:

The kid has a fast motor. Great athletic skills. Probably a spot player until he learns his defensive reposibilities beyond rushing the passer.

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

Not even 8 am and I have Steely Dan stuck in my head now, Not a bad start to my day.

  11. geno711 Says:

JTS just abused Dillon Radunz in the Tennessee game.

Dillon Radunz was a 2nd round pick of the Titans this year that was a 1st team AP All American that everyone said would hang at right tackle.

However, after the Buc’s game, Dillon Radunz is no longer a tackle. He has been moved to guard only for Tennessee.

Exciting to see how many other careers that JTS can ruin.

  12. Tony Says:

I think JPP & Gholston are both FAs next year. Definitely resign JPP & keep him with Barrett but I wouldn’t be surprised if they let Gholston go & then draft somebody else to put with Tryon. Then you’d have JPP Barrett Tryon & somebody else. SMH.🙄

  13. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

All he has to do is get 8 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 5 batted passes and 48 tackles all on part time to eclipse what 2020 DRPoY “Mr. I Want Tom Brady!” did to get it. Doesn’t sound unreasonable to me.

  14. Baby Grace Says:

Where are you DINGLEBERRY? I haven’t seen you on this board at all. All you did was talk about how Tryon was a bust. I told you that you would have to eat those words!

  15. Big Marlon B Says:

Tons of people, even on these very boards, were $hitting on this pick. I know 3 preseason games are an incredibly small sample, but I hope he showed enough skill to prepare all of them to eat crow. He has rare skills, and is in a great low pressure situation to produce.

  16. Tony Says:

He’ll probably somewhere around that 40 tackle 1 FF 1 FR 3 PBU & 7-9 sack range this year. He’ll definitely keep JPP & Barrett fresh.

  17. mark2001 Says:

Well, he did fool a lot of people…mostly other teams scouts. He started to turn it on year before last, but during his Covid off year, many thought he would come back rusty and backslidden from his previous year. Instead he worked his rear off building up his body and his skills, adding and perfecting pass moves. Who would have thought? Jason Licht and Company did. They figured it out. Don’t know how. But Kudos to the guys that figured it out and forwarded his name as our pick.
