Secondary Ready To Roll

August 31st, 2021

Bucs DC Todd Bowles

Look, Joe has harped all summer how Joe puts zero stock into preseasons games and is convinced the NFL could lift humanity as a whole by trashing the entire August schedule.

So Joe hopes this little nugget is the last Joe will mention preseason games until next summer.

The following very likely falls under the category of “But It Is Preseason.” Take a guess what team led the NFL in interceptions in preseason?

Yup, the Gravediggers (and their backups). The Bucs had five picks.

Of course this may not amount to a hill of beans because, yeah, preseason. But Joe would rather see a team lead the league in preseason picks than not have any at all.

Just yesterday Joe got a Twitter from a guy unimpressed by the Bucs’ secondary, a guy who also believes Dak Prescott will slice up the Bucs’ defense.

Joe replied the Bucs did just fine against Drew Brees, drama queen Aaron Rodgers and Pat Mahomes in consecutive games last winter.

And what can Joe say about the high-flying Chiefs offense when a streaker crossed the goal line last February more than their offense?

Looks like we go some ballhawks……SMB, Edwards, Winfield….even Cockrell & this new kid Delaney……

  2. Bird Says:

Who would have guessed the streaker was the fantasy football sleeper for the chiefs in the super bowl. 😆

“We’re going streaking…thru the quad and the gymnasium “

    REMAINS TO BE SEEN……
Pump the Brakes on the secondary.
Yes they improved in the post season.

But let’s let their play this year speak for itself.

I hope they ball out, but that remains for them to show.

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. Infomeplease Says:

    Well said Joe!!!

  5. Youngbucs Says:

We been great at takeaways the past 2 years.

  6. Biff Barker Says:

Without the pass rush we rode to the SB, the gravediggers might as well be digging their own. Bowles should be thinking early
blitzes to get the QB’s jittery.

  7. Bird Says:

Wouldnt be surprised to see herb miller on saints

Their Secondary losses/injury/ and main guy facing gun charge

    August

Agreed. And they could drop that silly nickname. Definitely “stick carrier” territory.

  9. SlyPirate Says:

Dak vs Gravediggers comes down to protection. The ‘Boys have three of the best in the biz …

    Shaq < Tyron Smith
    Suh < Zack Martin
    Vea < Biadasz and Williams

Can JPP/Tryon beat Collins? Can White/LVD/Safety sneak in?

  10. Irishmist Says:

I thought the streaker was stopped short.

  11. Wild Bill Says:

It’s a team game. Our line, and linebackers are a big factor in helping the dbs do their job. Interceptions and pass breakups are facilitated by a strong pass rush. Good pass coverage by dbs and line backers leads to more sacks by the line.

  12. Don’t make a scene 35 Says:

Interesting how getting picks is talked about so much especially on our defense
But I can remember a time early on in Monte Kiffin’s dominating Bucs defense and was in a period of time when interceptions were not happening for a stretch of games and Kiffin said something like this
You don’t game plan to get INTs, but get your guys in the right place with good technique within the scheme, and picks will come, they come in bunches usually
Put pressure on the offense and they will make mistakes then take advantage of errant passes

  13. Hodad Says:

I am sooo sick, and tired hearing about Dak, and the rest of his over rated Cowgirls. Please Bucs, if you all go 1-16 please make that one win an arse stomping of the Jerry’s boys.

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

If the Bucs get the good version of SMB this year, and Dean doesn’t fall for every double move, they’ll do great. If not, the Bucs will have to outscore them.

  15. BigPoppaBuc Says:

A couple ints and a few sacks of Dak next Thursday and the media will flip the script. Waaaay too much hype for a guy that can’t even practice.

    @ Sly

I think your giving a little too much credit to the Dallas Oline.
Tyron Smith (a stud) and Lael Collins (average to above average) both suffered season ending injuries last year. Zack Martin (another stud) also missed 6 games with injuries. And Tyler Biadasz was a fourth rounder last year who also was injured is definitely not better then Vea (one of the best NT in football), not to mention Williams will play center for the first time in his career (was a left guard).

  17. Ben green Says:

Your secondary will be picked on this year. You’d better pray jpp doesn’t blow his other hand off

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

Ben green: Picked on so much that the Bucs win another Super Bowl with them? You know, like last year?
