Camp Cupcake Day 15

August 11th, 2021

Yes it was hot today. Yes there was wind. So it wasn’t too awful. And the Bucs’ goat-like quarterback was on fire. Here are Joe’s world-famous practice notes for Bucs’ training camp, referred to as “Camp Cupcake” by Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

* Ke’Shawn Vaughn blows around left end for a major run.

* Biscuit in the basket: Tom Brady launches a pass down the left sideline and it falls beautifully over the shoulder of Tanner Hudson and drops right in his hands. Pretty.

* Same play, different receiver: This time it is Antonio Brown’s turn to basket catch a Brady pass over his shoulders down the left sideline.

* Brown on a crossing pattern from right to left is hit in the numbers by Brady.

* Brady threads the needle and connects with Chris Godwin down the left side.

* Brady fakes a throw to the left sideline, turns and fires to the right flat for Giovani Bernard.

* Scotty Miller toe-taps along the left sideline after pulling in a pass from Brady.

* Pick! Herb Miller jumps a route by Jaelon Darden over the middle.

* Brady throws deep to the right side for Mike Evans and like his passes before, the ball lofted over a pair of defenders’ heads and right into the arms of Evans. However, the ball hit Evans’ breastplate on his shoulder pads and bounced straight up in the air. Barely breaking stride, Evans reached up like he was grabbing a rebound (he sort of was), tucked the ball in and raced for a touchdown. The crowd erupts. Excellent focus and concentration by Evans.

* Brady gets the ball to Scotty Miller along the left sideline for a modest gain. What made this play cool was that it was sort of a bubble screen. And when Miller got the ball, he cut inside as Howard took out the corner who tried to cover Miller.

* Jaydon Mickens catches a deep pass from Ryan Griffin down the right side.

* De’Quan Hampton is wide arse open down the left sideline and Griffin hits him for a score.

* Griffin threads the needle down the left sideline for Josh Pearson.

* Goal line (obstructed view): Brady hits Playoff Lenny to the left side and then connects with Howard over the middle at the goal line for a pair of scores.

* K.J. Britt at inside linebacker sees something he doesn’t like and begins hollering and gesturing to his left. Sure enough the Bucs run to the defense’s left and it goes nowhere.

* 11-on-11! Tyler Johnson outwrestles a defensive back on the left side for a touchdown pass from Blaine Gabbert.

* Troymaine Pope catches a short pass to the left from Gabbert. What made this play interesting to Joe was what happened away from the ball. Cornerback Dee Delaney and Jaelon Darden were hollering at each other all through Darden’s route down the left side just after the snap of the ball. Joe couldn’t who was the culprit but both players screamed at each other (while Darden was running his route) that the other was guilty of holding.

* Brady throws a real pretty pass down the middle of the field. Problem: The nearest guy around the ball wore red (defense) and it was Mike Edwards, who was playing centerfield. Incomplete.

* Antonio Brown ran a route to the right side into the end zone but he wasn’t targeted. As soon as he took two steps back to the huddle, while still in the end zone, a little girl who was standing just outside the end zone yelled, “Hi AB!” Brown stopped in his tracks, turned around and waved at the little girl before heading back to the huddle.

* Artistry: Brady heaves a pass deep down the left sideline and Godwin reaches out and grabs the ball as his momentum makes him do a barrel roll after he tucked the ball in. Perfect. That fires up the crowd for the rest of the morning.

* Griffin goes over the middle targeting Johnson. And there was good coverage on Johnson by Nate Brooks. But Johnson leaps high, grabs the ball, and secures it just before he slams to the ground near the end zone. Johnson then got up and hollered, “Let’s f’ing go!”

* Hudson bobbles a ball along the left sideline from Griffin but is able to hang on before he fell out of bounds.

* Kyle Trask gets a pass past a pair of defenders to Jerell Adams down the right side.

Dallas plays a lot of Cover 3 w/ the new idiot D-Coordinator so bubble screens & short passes are what the Bucs are preparing for
