Big Competition For Final CB Spot

August 29th, 2021

Decisions.

Well, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians is going to have some intrigue when it comes to defense.

The top four cornerbacks are easily identified: Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting, Jamel Dean and Ross Cockrell. The fifth corner? Good question.

Antonio Hamilton? Eh, unless he is balling out on special teams that we haven’t noticed, he hasn’t shown Joe much.

But Herb Miller and Dee Delaney? This could get interesting.

Herb Miller plays on punt return and he made some plays last night. And Delaney, who Joe has seen make several plays in training camp, had a fantastic game in Houston. He finished the evening with two picks.

Now to be fair, his second pick came against the Texans’ third- and fourth-stringers. That’s basically saying Delaney was facing AAF rejects and CFL wannabes. At the very least, Delaney gave Arians and Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians something to think about.

Tough decision but a ball hawker probably wins in my humble opinion.

  2. Bird Says:

Delaney is 5. Not sure who gets 6
Actually joes , hamilton was given Kudos for his special teams play in last game coverage. Not sure if rhonde or myers mentioned in broadcast. And hamilton had most tackles in last game.

So do they go 10 linebackers or 10 dbs?

  3. Kentucky Buc Says:

If either one of them gets cut they will get picked up quick IMO .

  4. PassingThru Says:

Dee Delaney had a good game, two picks and helped on a fumble recovery. But yes, small sample size against mere mortals.

  5. Wild Bill Says:

Let’s talk about qbs. Bucs have two. Brady and Trask. The other two have looked like duds. Bucs should watch the waiver wire for a journeyman experienced back up when the big cuts happen.

I thought Cockrell was moved to Safety….

  7. bucfanforever Says:

Watching that interception return, Delaney needs to hang out with the running backs a couple days and learn how to protect the football, it was hanging out there, ready to be fumbled away.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I guess seventh round CB draft pick, Chris Wilcox is not in the running for the last slot?

  9. Brandon Says:

Cockerall might allow the team to keep an extra CB. Maybe Miller and Delaney both make it and Cockerall is our 4th S over Hagan.

  10. geno711 Says:

Correct 7th round pick Chris Wilcox is not in the running at all. Some guys just do not work out, especially 4th thru 7th rounders.

Licht keeps mentioning rookies. Has never mentioned Wilcox once.

I assume he will be on practice squad but for as little as he has shown, there is a chance that Licht and Bowles might see someone else they like and get that player on the practice squad instead.

  11. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

They will keep the 7th rounder on the practice & I think Delaney makes the team… You can’t make the club from the tub!!!

These five second videos are a bit weak for my attention span. Blink twice and you’ve watched it three times. I like an event to be set up before watching. Under the current scenario, Joe went overboard with Arians 17 second postgame presser.
Guess I should be thankful I still possess an attention span.

Today’s Florida Man watching the network news on TV:
“Quick honey, come here and see all these blown up dead people. Never mind, too late. Say, what’s for dinner?”

  13. DaBux Says:

When we have a “tough” decision on a 5th DB, life is good in Tampa Bay. Wasn’t it just 3 seasons ago we were fretting about a starting DB?

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

Dee Delaney had a good game, and Arians has been mentioning him throughout the preseason. I thought before last night it’d be Antonio Hamilton, but I doubt it now.

  15. mark2001 Says:

bumaneer..agree. Delaney makes it.. Wilcox PS.

  16. adam from ny Says:

the back end roster guys are just that…back end roster guys

the last handful to make the cut on the final cutdown day dodged a bullet, but then the waiver wire surfing begins…

licht and company probably have a little board of possibilities already in play, and are just seeing how it shakes out around the league according to availability…

so adjustments are made and sh!t changes anyway…

  17. Marine Buc Says:

Delany is my choice but it appeared he strained his knee returning the last INT he got. He got up slow and limped off the field. I hope he is OK but it may be possible to store him on IR until middle of the season and give the last spot to Miller for now…

  18. Red86 Says:

    I like Hagan and Hamilton.

  19. TOM Says:

I think the Bucs should find a way to keep both. I also like Hagan.

  20. Bucamania Says:

Delaney looks the most legit even over Hamilton

  21. teacherman777 Says:

Cockrell should not be a lock.

I would choose a better athlete for the #4 and #5 CB

Cockrell is smart. But seems to have a low ceiling, athletically, in my mind.
