Tape Backs Up Tom Brady

June 30th, 2021

Eye in the sky doesn’t lie.

With the revelation last week on HBO, Joe’s not sure what to think.

Park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady claimed that 90 percent of what he says in press conferences is pure nonsense.

So what are we supposed to believe? And what can we believe of what comes from Brady’s piehole in his media sessions?

Earlier this year, Brady claimed he didn’t know the Bucs’ playbook until late in the season. Mind you, he said this on a watch podcast, hardly a formal press setting.

Joe asked Bucco Bruce Arians about this shortly after Brady’s revelation and Arians concurred, saying the second half of the late-November loss to the Chiefs is when Brady felt comfortable with the full playbook.

Greg Cosell of NFL Films said it is obvious Brady took his game to a higher level later last season, though he didn’t reference Brady’s playbook claim. Cosell, one of the preeminent X’s and O’s guys out there, said on the “Ross Tucker Football Podcast” the film clearly demonstrates Brady was a much better quarterback after the bye.

The bye week, coincidentally (?), came the weekend after that loss to the Chiefs.

Ross Tucker: [The Bucs] were playing very well, clearly Greg, toward the end of the year. And I guess it was after that bye that they made a change — what did they change Greg? What did you see? They were an OK team. They were good. I mean they lost to the Bears. They got smoked by some of these teams. All of a sudden after the bye, down the stretch and into the playoffs, they were a different team. What jumped out to you?

Greg Cosell: Well, I thought their o-line started to play better. And [Tom] Brady played at a really, really high level. I thought Brady after the bye and maybe a bit before, really started to play well. Maybe it was a comfort with the offense. I’m sure the offense was a combination of [Bruce] Arians and what Brady likes to do from his years in New England. I think that was probably a work in progress through the early part of the season, trying to find the right balance between Bruce Arians, who has been in the league a long time and has very strong convictions about his offense and Tom Brady who has been in the league for a long time and was unbelievably great in with what he did in New England. So I am sure it is comfort. But it just appeared on tape as well that all of a sudden, Brady started to throw exceptionally well. And I think the o-line clearly started to play better.

Joe thinks Cosell is on the mark, as you would expect. Yeah, Brady played better and perhaps the tape backs up what Brady and Arians said about the playbook comfort. But damn if the Bucs offensive line didn’t ball out as the playoffs approached and through the postseason.

If the Bucs can continue that type of play upfront, Joe doesn’t know who is going to stop this offense short of injuries.

Joe is starting to think, to quote Arians, only the Bucs can beat the Bucs’ offense.

Well, Brady is honest enough to admit that nobody is truly honest in press conferences. How you talk in the locker room is entirely different to how to talk to the world, where you try to be respectful and not give bulletin board material to your opponents. Honestly, all athletes in team sports are like that or try to be like that.

Just think … The Bucs start where they left off.

How much better will they become?

The end of the year was about “controlling games” from beginning to end with smart, complimentary football. That’s why I believe it will take the perfect game or a lot of luck to beat the Bucs this year.

Brady’s camp leaked to certain media that the offense needs to change & it did….then we ended up winning the Superbowl

  4. Beeej Says:

Was it after the Chicago game or the second slimy Saints game that Arians said Donovan Smith had some ‘technique’ issues that needed correcting? Anyhow, the last part of the season and thru the playoffs he killed it

Bowles started using the man position instead of a lot of zone. Do you guys remember that? That’s when the defense started to show up and I’m assuming that’s what he’s going to use going into this year. But now we have a Super Bowl defense that will continue to learn and perfect.

    Please start the season!

That should be this year slogan; “Only the Bucs can beat the Bucs!…ReDo…

  8. PassingThru Says:

True, the soft zone was pretty awful. They went to man/pressman and tightened the zones with less cushioning. Made sense, use those young athletic legs in the defensive backfield.

    I know 😥😥😥

Arians is the same way talking to media. He’s not going to put his game plan or situation out in public. All NFL teams BS a bit to press. All the other NFL BS is what makes me down.

Brady could have gone in the huddle and told everyone to get open and he would have made pass after pass. At least that’s what I tell my friends that are obnoxious Saints – Patriots fans.

  12. Hodad Says:

If the O line continues playing well DC’s will have to bring blitz’s to get to Brady. That would leave more one on ones for our receivers, and Brady will make them pay.

Brady got caught up a bit in the moment on HBO in the barber shop setting. It’s much like a young fella talkin’ big about his supposed sexual conquests in front of a group of other guys.

Brady was the absolute perfect fit for The Bucs ( obviously )…came at a reasonable salary for a starting QB let alone The GOAT. If the Niners are the team ( I believe they are )…they absolutely blew it. They’ve mortgaged their future for a ( good ) prospect who could easily bust.

That would be self inflicted suicide for DCs.

Maybe TB12 has no use for media mongers just like the rest of NORMAL AMERICANS 🤔
