Ali Marpet Receiving Accolades

June 27th, 2021

Ali Marpet

It seems Bucs left guard Ali Marpet is getting deserved props from those in the national media.

We are in the throes of List Season. Everyone, it seems, has a list. Mark Schofield of USA Today is no different. He recently cobbled together his top guards and placed Ali Marpet at No. 6.

Of course Marpet should be on the list. This isn’t something new that Marpet has been getting the job done. In fact, former Bucs scout and Jets assistant coach Pat Kirwan of SiriusXM NFL Radio was giving Marpet major props last week when he broke down the Bucs’ offensive line.

“Marpet, the kid out of Hobart College, Division III, 13 starts, zero sacks,” Kirwan said last week of Marpet’s play as the Bucs rolled to a Super Bowl win. “And how about this: In Ali Marpet’s last 45 starts, he’s given up two sacks.”

That is crazy. Starting 45 games is damn near three seasons worth of starts. And in those nearly three seasons, Marpet has allowed but two sacks? That Pro Bowl stuff, man.

And yet Donovan Smith is still tied for first in penalties and tied seventh in sacks allowed. The vet Smith piggy backs off Ali and Jensen and now people think he’s got game and deserves a top tier salary because he had some hit and miss games down the stretch.

Ali Marpet has been cheated of the Pro Bowl for years. Now that the Bucs have a Super Bowl behind them, he should get noticed this year.

  3. SOEbuc Says:

And I guess the move to the left side worked out well compared to a dominant young RG his early years.

45 Starts = 3 NFL seasons, only 2 sacks in 3 years, ZERO pro bowls / All Pros

1 SB Ring with 0 sacks (major contributor) > any Pro Bowl

  5. Kentucky Buc Says:

That’s All Pro stuff. Pro Bowl is a ballot stuffing joke.

  6. SOEbuc Says:

Pro Bowl shouldn’t be a term or event. Good ole’ NFL TV ratings.

Winning changes everything. Recognition comes with winning. Keep it going BUCS!👍

The Pro Bowl is all about exposure. Given the Bucs prime time line up this year and last and more NFL watchers becoming familiar with the Bucs following their 2021 SB win, I suspect the Bucs will land several players on the next Pro Bowl NFC squad. My prediction is that Wirfs (sorry Ali) will make All Pro this year.

The only “rankings” that really matter is what the Team and our fans think of Ali , and those “rankings” are through the roof !

  11. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

    He’s a BEAST ! I LOVE our O’Line ! So does TB12 !

  12. PassingThru Says:

Elite guard, hard to imagine 5 Gs ranked higher.

  13. m0j0 Says:

Marpet is definitely a top 5 or maybe even top 3 guard.

  14. Slugglife Says:

I’ve never bought or worn a pro bowl shirt. Thats ego garbage. McCoy was a pro bowler. Never amounted to signature wins.

I do however have to Super Bowl shirts, one has many holes and bare threads. One is brand new.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

Ali got a lot of hype last year so I paid attention.

Jensen and Wirfs are beasts. All Pro. Ali is good but not great. I saw him get beat more that people want to admit. TB12 and running back saved him on more than one occassion.

No need to make a change but I think the accolades are a little overblown.

  16. Craig Says:

The big thing is that in 2 of those seasons he had a QB that tended to extend plays. To be able to not allow with that was amazing.

If Kappa comes back strong it will be a banner year for the Bucs O-line, knowing how long their QB is going to hold the ball will make it easy for them.
