Shaq Barrett Took Hometown Discount

March 15th, 2021

Discount!

There is one former NFL agent who said, based on other edge rushers’ production and salaries, he valued Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett as a $22 million player per year.

Based on the information twittered out by uber NFL insider Adam Schefter of BSPN, the Bucs re-signed Shaq today at a hometown discount.

Some $18 million a year is a nice chunk of change lower than $22 million a year. So Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht got an absolute steal here.

Joe wants to guzzle Big Storm beers right now so badly he could cry. But, Joe has to work today — drink responsibly!

This is truly a great day in Tampa Bay!

    Great News!

  2. pewter941 Says:

Im sure the no State tax helped.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

Fair deal and glad JL made it happen!

  4. Beeej Says:

He’s guaranteed 17, if he gets 15 sacks he gets the extra million. I believe that is about the least they could have paid him

  5. buc15 Says:

    yeah buddy

  6. Bird Says:

That is a huge bargain 18 per

He could have easily gotten 22 a year

    Garret getting 25 a year
    Bosa making 27 a year

  7. dr. snoots Says:

    Cheers to you, Joe.

  8. Coburn Says:

Well think I’d said a few threads back id consider 17-18 per with a backloaded contract. Assuming that’s exactly what happened

  9. Coburn Says:

Challenge now is how to fill out rest of roster and still have 10 mil for rookies and operating money for season. Gonna be a lot of guys on vet min or rookies for depth. I’m sure they will try to restructure guys and baxkload more deals

  10. Bird Says:

His cap hit 5.6 mil for shaq – 2021
    Whoa

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Wow…can’t believe they got Godwin and Shaq.

  12. Mitch Says:

His cap hit this year is just 5.6 million!! Incredible.

  13. SOEbuc Says:

$68 million/yr. $36M guaranteed, $4 million sack and playoff essentials. Did I ask if you were good Jason? GD you’re good. That’s the perfect write up for Shaq.

  14. sgrd0q Says:

Oh, wow. Really good deal. Now they may even have some change left over to sign a punt returner 🙂

  15. ManzielMadness Says:

Thank you Shaq… easily could’ve gotten more on the FA market. Very happy we didn’t make the same mistake twice. Succop and Suh next!

  16. unbelievable Says:

This is about what I thought it would be.

Despite him saying he wanted to “break the bank” a few weeks ago, he was interviewed previously saying he really wanted to come back to Tampa. His agent prob told him to stop saying that and giving away their leverage lol.

This also reinforces just how tight the players on this SB team were.

Now let’s get Suh and Succop!

  17. SOEbuc Says:

    *$68M. Not a year, lol.

  18. Snook Says:

Or the reports of $22M were overblown. Which is more likely.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Count me among the surprised that we brought Godwin, Shaq & LVD all back…..the restructures from Brady & LVD helped a lot.

Here’s hoping we have enough for Suh, Gronk & Succop….& others necessary.

    WHOOPEE!!

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Sanity has prevailed. We see Brady’s extension freed up Shaqs contract. Awesome day for the World Champions and their quest for another Title on the current run they are on. Time to Dominate the NFL for the next 2-3 years. This team is only going to be better with last years foundation of being Champs. The Bucs are a Scary team to play. They know they can dominate anyone in the NFL. Just ask KC. GO BUCS!!!

  21. Timbucs2 Says:

Looks like he’ll only count 5.6 million against this year’s cap. Room for Suh and Lombardi Lenny?

  22. BilLBob11 Says:

But but but oily drews going to ask for everything but but but

  23. Wesley Says:

That means goodbye to Fournette, Suh, Brown and Gronk. Maybe even Succup.

  24. Robert Says:

they overpaid, but I suppose that’s better than taking a risk on someone else. Congrats to him.

  25. Pewter Power Says:

With that we can get AB, gronk if we wanted. The only resigning that would shock me is if we brought back playoff Lenny

  26. gbobucsfan Says:

Not necessarily Wesley. ONly counts as $5.6mil against this year’s cap

  27. Wesley Says:

Find a way to keep Suh and Succup and we all good.

  28. FirstTimePoster Says:

How about a big THANK YOU! for Mike Greenberg. Licht doesn’t work alone.

  29. Jeagan1999 Says:

    WOOOHOOOOO!!!

The band is back for SuperBowl#2!

  30. BridleOaks Buc Says:

So his base salary is $17million with up to $1million per year in incentives…Wow…Shaq is now a very rich young man, and he did the Bucs a LARGE!! Licht and Greenberg have been masterful. Also the Brady effect is in full display. I also want to give full credit to the Tampa Bay area. Such a great place to live and raise a family. Players don’t want to leave the area. I’m a proud son of St Petersburg!!

  31. Cainishere Says:

Well well well. So he is coming back you say?
Well now that he will be “Getting Paid” I hope his production does not fall off as others in the NFL after “Getting Paid” have in the past.
Without Vita his production was woeful to say the least.
Now we must turn our focus towards Suh the final piece of that stellar D-line.
    GO BUCS!!! SIGN SUH!!!!.

  32. swampbuc Says:

Joe, you can drink responsibly with the rest of us! Bottoms up!!!

Outstanding news. The Bucs have some special dudes.

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Nice! Breathe easy, Joe!

  34. Steven007 Says:

We won’t know we got a “steal” for a few years, but it’s definitely a fair deal.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

BridleOaks Buc…YES…Thank You Tom Brady for coming to Tampa.

  36. Waterboy Says:

Welcome back Shaq!!!!! Glad to have proven guys that want to be there and not mercenaries chasing $$$.

  37. Buc4evr Says:

Wow fantastic. We now need Succop, Suh, Gronk and AB signed. Lenny would be good also but he is probably going to get more than the Bucs can pay.

  38. BuccaneerButters Says:

As Tom Brady would say: LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  39. Anonymous Says:

I to remember being mocked when I said “I” would take $4 million a year less to stay home and play for a super bowl contender vs going to a perennial loser for more money. Anyone care to mock Shaq? I didn’t think so.

  40. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Suh, Gronk, AB & sign James White, sorry to say let Lenny walk. Brees is a baller but can’t feel bad for a guy supposed to make $15 mil in the booth.

  41. Cobraboy Says:

    Cainishere Says:

    Shaquil Barrett
    TB • OLB • 58
Contract package: $110 million, five years ($22 million per year)
    Overall guarantees: $68 million
Fully guaranteed at signing: $50 million
    First three years: $68 million
Bye Bye Shaq, enjoy them Browns

Where is “I’m always right” Cainishere the Plagiarist? Will he man-up and eat that crow?

  42. Oxycondoms Says:

There might need to be an article on the contract/cap experts bucs have working for them

  43. crazyBucs_CL Says:

very expensive….it will destroy our cap for years…. dont blame JL though…pressure from everywhere… media, blogs, news papers…. i think they were rooting for ShB to get the high pay …. so they can “break the bank” and lose the rest of FA players…

  44. Cobraboy Says:

Now we’re on a Suh and Succop watch…

  45. August 1976 Buc Says:

Now we must turn our focus towards Suh the final piece of that stellar D-line.
    GO BUCS!!! SIGN SUH!!!!.

STELLAR FRONT 7, teamwork is made the dream work. Yes Suh and Succop to make a perfect trifecta for the day!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  46. SlyPirate Says:

Wow! Surprised and impressed. A great compromise.

  47. Bucked up Says:

My next New Jersey purchase #58, LFG SHAQ ATTACK IS BACK BABY!!!

  48. Swampbuc Says:

Suh probably won’t sign for a while, given Joe’s earlier article describing how Suh represents himself. But he is my next top priority, then Succup and then Gronk.

Gronk and AB are going to really have to take a discount. Unfortunately I don’t see Leaonard staying, when fumbling Aaron Jones gets a 4-year $48 large contract and LEnny outperformed him all through the last quarter of the season and the playoffs, Lenny will attract someone to do a 3 year / $21 Larg deal.

In any event, the offseason has already exceeded my expectations. I didn’t think we could keep both LVD and Shaq and we did.

    Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. Bird Says:

Anyone who thinks the bucs overpaid have zero clue

Its actually 17 per year with 18 potential if escalators made which is not a given
Only the first 2 years are guaranteed – 32 mil
So he will be age 30 when that happens

    Huge discount there
    Brady effect

  50. Colin in Canada Says:

His cap number is low this year too.

How much cap space do we have remaining?

  51. Coburn Says:

Glad he settled for something in the realm of reasonabke instead of swinging for the fences. Besides his obviously high level of play I remember that hilarious interview where he told the chiefs tackle he’d better take the train home.. and that suit. Remember feeling a bit down we might lose such a colourful personality along with a great player.

  52. SteveK Says:

    We got our guy! Hell
    Yeah!

  53. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

We have a soft schedule coming up this season. Super Bowl or bust!!!!!!!

  54. JA Says:

After being critical of his “break the bank” comment, it’s nice to see that he compromised a bit to stay. Good for him and good for the Bucs.
Now the conversation turns to … who’s next? My vote goes to the unselfish, happy-go-lucky Gronk!
With his size, blocking and pass catching abilities combined with a unique locker room presence, he is worth more to the team than most think.

Without Vita his production was woeful to say the least.

    Trolling. Dude be happy.

Last 2 years Shaq in top 5 in QB sacks, TFL, QB Hits and pressures.
He is + run defender as well.

He played many more snaps every game than did Vita Vea.

He made plays without Vita Vea – two of his three sacks in the Green Bay Playoff game had nothing to do with Vita.

  56. Bird Says:

    36 typo^^

  57. Adrnagy Says:

Too much $17m yr. not worth 8 sacks. But I want to see the years breakdown. Hopefully we can cut without dead money if he’s producing 5-8 sacks.
And don’t give me the qb pressures bull crap. Shaq is surrounded by all pro HOF players. And Bowles putting him in great positions. He should rack up at Least 10-12 sacks a yr.

Licht bend over on this one.

  58. gbobucsfan Says:

only $5.6 mil against the cap this year

Repeat $5.6 against the cap this year

  59. windbaggery Says:

18 mil a year is enough to set up your family for a few lifetimes. Glad he recognized that.

  60. BoricuaBucFan4life Says:

My Handle use to be “FireJasonLicht” but after the last couple years he has made up for his bone headed mistakes.

  61. Cainishere Says:

HAHAH COBRA the gift that keeps on giving. You sir are something else. Those numbers where what he was projected for on the market. Yes he took a hometown discount and made it work for Tampa. So sure I will eat me some crow . . I still say he is a product of stellar coaching and scheme and still say a rookie could have as much success as he will but we shall see. Suh and Vita are both vital to him having a successful year with the Bucs. You know, this crow isn’t half bad lol Tasty like chicken 😀

  62. tbbucs3 Says:

Even if Vegas doesnt think this…..the Bucs just became Superbowl favorites for next year, in my mind at least.

  63. Doctor Stroud Says:

@Joe: you will now have to trade in your #28 jersey for a #58 jersey!

  64. Cobraboy Says:

Now Cainishere moves the goalposts. Nt surprised.

Young casual fan dude: the “market” is what someone signs for. Nothing more, nothing less.

Your “market” was a figment of someone else’s imagination which you claimed was your own.

And, yes, I am indeed something else: not a casual fan and real, actual experience on several levels on my side.

  65. adam from ny Says:

    awesome news…

i wanted us to steal shaq for 15 mil per year….

    at 4 years 60m…or 5 years 75m…

we basically met him in the middle between 15 and 20 mil

    cool deal and cool beans…

very fair and workable for all sides involved…

congrats shaq on having basically 100 mil in career earning when all is said and done…

you are now an uber rich man for life…

    and hopefully you’re a buc for a long time…

    way to go shaq !

  66. mark2001 Says:

Joe…just don’t spill your Bromosa on your keyboard. Maybe you can get Ira to do the typing for you on the next article, and you can kick back and have one.

  67. adam from ny Says:

it all comes out in the wash too…

the few extra bucks he would have earned playing in a miserable situation for a perennial loser isn’t worth it…

endorsements, winning, and future options being a part of the new america’s team and potential mini dynasty really do outweigh the few extra beans…

being part of greatness actually gets you some of that money anyway in roundabout ways, regardless…

look for shaq on wheaties boxes, as the new wawa representative, and the 7-eleven pizza endorser lol 🙂

  68. adam from ny Says:

ira is all hugged up on cosmo right now…

and cosmo is hosing down ira’s khakis

  69. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Great Job Jason , but your work is not over , it is imperative to sign Suh. The combination of VV and Suh is the secret sauce that just caves in the center of the pocket and flushes QB’s to Shaq and JPP. Do whatever is necessary to sign Suh-PLEASE. Wishing the season started tomorrow and would love to see James White as our 3rd down back-we would be virtually unstoppable.

  70. Cainishere Says:

Well it is okay if you do not like what I say. I predicted back in March of 2020 that the Bucs would win the Super Bowl, I was right. I predicted that in 2021 Chris Godwin would get the franchise tag before anyone else knew he would get it, again, I was right. I predicted before anyone said anything that David would get 2 years on a deal. Again, I was right. I still say “A ROOKIE CAN DO WHAT HE CAN DO” Why? because of the great coaches and scheme that the Bucs use.
As far as this “Casual Fan” garbage you like to spew I will have you know that I have been a die hard fan since 76 and have never rooted for any other team.
SIGN SUH or the money will have been wasted on Shaq.

  71. mark2001 Says:

Adam…so you are saying that Cosmo has to wear a diaper when riding in Ira’s new vehicle from Bill Curry Ford?

[It is Bill *Currie* Ford. The dealership has nothing to do with that failed Bama/Kentucky coach who BSPN holds up like a resident supreme moralist for our times. — Joe]

  72. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Woooooo!!!

  73. Marine Buc Says:

    Amazing!!!

Now sign AB, Gronk, Suh and Succop and we are in business!

    Go Bucs!

  74. Gofortheface30 Says:

ADRNAGY – I have never once seen any kind of rational, cogent, coherent thought in any one of your posts. You need to get a handle on that asbergers/autism or whatever it is you got going on

  75. Defense Rules Says:

tbbucs3 … I’m with you; the Bucs just became SB favorites for 2021, and especially after we add Suh & Succop back into the fold.

2022 & beyond will be a lot tougher to deal with now that all this salary $$$ has been slid to future years, but hey, that’s tomorrow’s problem. Let’s go all-in for 2021 while Brady’s here & go for the twofer.

  76. mark2001 Says:

Apologies to Bill Currie…but not to Cosmo.

  77. MadMax Says:

    Nice! 18….

  78. lambchop Says:

At least one Shaquil(le) didn’t bail on Florida. Although, I don’t blame the former since the Tragic didn’t/don’t have the front office the Bucs do.

  79. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Wait, I just clicked on the picture…you still don’t have the pictures as clickeys into the article? 🤔

  80. DayOnePaul Says:

If I understand correctly, the state income tax only counts where the games are played. So only half of his salary is state income tax free.
Some CPA out there, clear this up, if you would.
Licht got a hell of a steal.

  81. SKBucsFan Says:

As much as I like gettingvtheae guys re-signed these back loaded deals are going to out us in cap hell in a few years. I’d rather be consistently contending than riding the roller coaster of success.

  82. Bucfan81 Says:

He was getting paid over 15 million last year on the Tag. So this is really a win for the Bucs organization. He is only getting 2 million more a year and he is locked up long term and only the first couple years are guaranteed. So they can still walk away from the deal after Brady leaves. The front office nailed this one.

  83. Rayjay1122 Says:

I gotta put on my shades. It is Sopooo very bright in Tompa Bay!!!

  84. TampaTown Says:

It’s party time! And on the day the season ticket money is due 😂

  85. Pops Malone Says:

Joe, I will jump a plane out of Chicago and head to Bigstorm to meet you to celebrate! Just say when! Beers on me! Go Bucs! Now go sign Suh and the kicker….

  86. DBS Says:

Adrnagy having a cow. What a shame. Welcome back Shaq!

  87. Mike Says:

Man, this is awesome news! GO BUCS!

  88. Alaskabuc Says:

Good job JL! Welcome back Shaq! Next up Suh and Succop, keep it rolling!

  89. Aceofaerospace Says:

I think Adrnagy used to call himself Ndog of maybe Tmax. How can anyone find fault with any of the Bucs off-season moves? Who honestly believed Shaq, LVD, and Godwin would be under contract for next year? I did say it was possible if players were willing to sign for less than market value to stay here. I had no idea if they would, but I was hopeful.

  90. adam from ny Says:

    @Mark2001 :

no i’m saying ira’s khakis are like a roll of bounty paper towels for yung cosmo…

cosmo goes commando (diaper free) 🙂

  91. adam from ny Says:

    @ ADRNAGY :

hey what happened to that 5 year 47 mil deal for shaq that your insiders at one buc had as almost a done deal…

    ???

  92. adam from ny Says:

    5 years 47 mil ………….

    bwahaahahah

  93. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    It’s a good day!

  94. BillMFL Says:

Nice deal. Shaqs sacks were down last season largely due to double team blocking which leaves the other pass rushers with single blocks. Helps JP, Suh and Vita rush. And two years gives Bucs time to sign some young blood. Looks like the defense starters will remain complete.

  95. Capt.Tim Says:

    Amazing deal!! Fantastic Job JL!
And for those of you concerned about being in “Cap hell”
You are following a different sport.
We are playing to win SuperBowls. You are playing
“Balance the cap”- a game for accountants, not Football fans.
We have the Greatest football player ever.
    Ever.
We go all in- to win SuperBowls.
We can cry about Cap issues, when Brady retires, and we are back to “suck” again.

  96. Buczilla Says:

Awesome! Considering that the Chargers were dumb enough to pay Joey Boss an average of 27 million a year, we got a great deal. Licht just keeps slamming home runs and hopefully there his enough left over for Suh and Succop.

  97. Gofortheface30 Says:

    Captain Tim – well said

  98. Oneilbuc Says:

I’m ready for the season to start . They said this is the start of the new season . But I’m ready for September!!!

  99. Ericb Says:

Nice !!!!! Were being very smart with the money it seems and thanks brady and ME for taking pay cuts brady has done pay cuts for years…but the band is staying together hell yeah!!!! We need succup though he is an AWESOME KICKER…Do not lose him…a kicker is crucial…AB dont lose him either gronk can take a pay cut if needed LFGOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I cant wait until next season RUN IT BACK FOR REAL CHIEFS SUCK!!!!

  100. Hissylizzard Says:

Lol….not much of a discount and he may have gotten more money, but not from a contender……he can make it up in endorsements and winning … once you make the crazy money it isnt about top dollar for the guys that recognize it’s a team sport

  101. Tony Says:

I think Suh & Gronkowski would be next. Would be nice to see them bring Fournette & Antonio back but Miller & Johnson played well when they got the chance, too! I doubt they’ll be able to bring everybody back. If they can’t bring Fournette Suh & Gronkowski back MAYBE WE CAN BRING DUNN SAPP & GILES BACK! Then if we can’t bring Succop back MAYBE WE CAN BRING GRAMATICA BACK!😃

  102. Tony Says:

Maybe they should use the franchise tag on JASON LICHT next year.

  103. TOM Says:

Good job Mike Greenberg. Now get Succup & Suh & we’re set.

  104. Darin Says:

So you dont want to judge the draft before they play but dont mind judging a guys contract before he plays. Hmmmm. We’ll see what kind of contract it ends up being. You might be saying how u pooped the bed again in 3 years

  105. Darin Says:

And put it in perspective too. 18 million dollars, not pesos, a season…to play football. And he is doing the team a favor by letting them pay him only 36 million at least. What a guy. Great signing i take it all back. He can feed his family at least until he’s 40 now.

  106. 123urout Says:

Great news! That means my superbowl LV championship jersey is obsolete. I need to put an order now for Superbowl LVI champions BUCS jersey. 😁😁

Our AC/DC loving GM (as I am also) continues to work Magic ! The whole “crew” WILL be back to make another run at another ring ! GO BUCS !!!!

  111. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

NOBODY wants to go anywhere else for a few more $$$ . The only ones who won’t be on our team in 2021 will either be traded or cut . NOBODY wants to leave this team !
