Report: Bucs Negotiating Long-term Contract With Shaq Barrett

March 9th, 2021

Still drinking Cam Newton’s Gatorade.

The news is glorious and it’s from a sound source, the mighty Twitter account of Mike Florio at NBC Sports and ProFootballTalk.com.

Make it rain, Team Glazer!

In case you missed it, the Bucs moved earlier today to use their lone franchise player option on Chris Godwin.

    Awesome!

  5. chris L Says:

finally the infamous picture and tag line!

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Joe likes Shaq?

  7. ocala Says:

Bucs need to make this happen and Shaq needs to understand that as talented as he is that him playing in the Bucs system is where he has become dominant.

  8. Bird Says:

    Joe loves sacks
    👀

  9. Steven007 Says:

So there you have it. Hopefully they don’t break the bank…

  10. Casual Observer Says:

    Good news.

  11. adam from ny Says:

    @SteveK:

    ummm…. duhhhh

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If this happens, it will be interesting to see what happens with LVD, Suh, Gronk, Succop & others……..sort of reminds me of the old Elvis song:

“Whole lot of structuring goin’ on”!!!

  13. Robert Says:

commenced talks is hardly anywhere close to signing. Of course they’ll talk, but within a few days we will be reading about SB talking to other teams.

I would have kept him over CG and kept AB for CG’s spot. There has to be some restructuring on contracts going on elsewhere….and why have they not let OJ walk yet?

  14. Joe in Michigan Says:

Glad to hear. Maybe 4 years, $87 million? 15 this year, then 24, 24, 24?

  15. August 1976 Buc Says:

Joe likes Shaq and alot of fans do too. And QB’S HATE SHAQ. Hopefully they get this done, and as soon as possible. GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Dewey Selmon Says:

This was the plan all along. Shaq will be signed and Godwin will get his next year. LVD will sign a 2 year deal that will get ripped up next year and he will get an extension or long term deal based on if he shows any regression/injury.

  17. Bird Says:

Let me rephrase my previous stmt

    Joe like sacks
And joe has a chubby right now
    😂

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

Robert: You expect little AB to play the big bad Larry Fitzgerald/Chris Godwin over-the-middle, getting-hit, blocking role? Good luck with that.

  19. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Shaq likes Tampa, wants to be here, the Bucs want him. Find the number. Probably means goodbye to David unless David just wants to stay a Buc for life for a much lesser amount.

  20. Dp4life22 Says:

Insider scoop they been in negotiations with all their free agents many weeks before end of season. Reworking contracts have been in the works. They are attempting to keep all only one moving maybe leonard unless he comes super cheap. Sometimes its good to have family ties to players

  21. Bird Says:

Money is so tight. I think joe even commented bucs were technically over cap with franchise of godwin. Now cap has not been confirmed cause that could change

So i wonder if bucs are getting creative with shaq deal
    He still gets huge guaranteed
But maybe its longer 5 year deal
Maybe he only makes 10 mil his first year and 25 his second year when cap is above 200 mil.

Have you seen dak deal makes me wonder about creativity

Dak is getting 75 mil his first year with signing bonus and salary
How crazy is that. And he is coming off pretty bad injury. So he should count 75 mil of around 180 -185 mil total cap. That team will not be able to sign anyone for a while. They better draft well. Shoot they may back out of first round cause those contracts to high with daks deal

  22. BillyBucFan Says:

    4 year 75 million

  23. bucfanforever Says:

    Bird –

Of course I don’t know all the details of Dak’s deal, but what I read is that he is getting a $66 million signing bonus, so of the $75 million, that leaves $9 million in base salary. The signing bonus is spread out over the term of the contract. So although the contract is 4 years, it has 2 void years at the end to spread out the signing bonus over 6 years total.

If you do all the math, that means that Dak’s 2021 cap hit will be $20 million. $9 million in season pay, and 11 million of the signing bonus.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

The Bucs will have to pay over the market value to get Shaq to sign before free agency/open market. Lower total this year, higher totals down the line.

  25. Jeagan1999 Says:

    Probably 5 years, $80mil-$90mil total….$40mil signing bonus…$2mil salary this season….total cap hit in 2021 $10million.

They can clear that much by extending Brady….easy….still sign Gronk, Suh and Succop with what is left.

LVD may be the odd man out…unless they can restructure a few other guys like ME13.

  26. bucfanforever Says:

The Bucs can do similar things, but you would only want to do so, if the player is going to contribute in a meaningful way to winning over that time, and that the cap is going to go up a lot. If Dak were to flame out in Dallas and they want to get rid of him Carson Wentz-style, then he is going to be a humungous cap charge the next season.

Playing around with some numbers on Barrett, doing the same, without the void years, you could see something like this:

    5 years $105 million – average $21 million/year with $55 million guaranteed

    Signing Bonus – $25 million
    2021 Pay – $5 million
    2022 Pay – $14 million
    2023 Pay – $18 million
    2024 Pay – $21 million
    2025 Pay – $22 million

Then he would count $10 million against this years cap, but would “Break The Bank”

  27. Bird Says:

    Bucfanforever

Haha. Yah i just looked that up myself as my stmt was not researched. The signing bonus is spread out over the years of contract
He still gets 75 mil his first year but its spread out over the years of contract as it relates to cap hits per year

Bucs normally dont do a ton of these deals. But hey. They should get creative to try and keep as many studs as possible

Bucs are currently like 3 mil under cap with godwin franchise
Shaq just sent tweet / message to godwin saying better you then me
Not sure that was necessary 😂

  28. Buxszntkt Says:

BFF, like your plan spreading it out over more years. We really only need him 2-3 years but have to spread out that cost as much as possible, even 6 years, so CG can get a real contract next year and preferably be able to keep LVD. Don’t think LVD takes a two year deal, maybe longer for him as well.
Then we will be F-Ed after Brady walks off, but perhaps I will take a few years off from my season tkts at that point and build a home theater to watch the games , while we desperately try to rebuild .

  29. cmurda Says:

Tag Godwin and try to sign Shaq long term. Definitely the right moves. I hope LVD can be resigned too but there’s only so much bread to go around. This is nerve-wracking.

BFF. That looks very realistic and in line with how it should be set up.

  30. Bucthis Says:

I know Joe is happy, but I think it’s a mistake and also franchising Godwin ? I would of liked to see us sign Antonio, LVD, and Suh because they are major pros and not just solid players, but also coaches out there that lead these young guys. I love Godwin, but I still don’t get why everyone over looks Tyler Johnson and just wait and see what a stud he’s going to be !!! Either way still so high and can’t believe we won the super bowl and really hope like the mock drafts show Najee Harris could be coming to Tampa.. Go Bucs

  31. Adrnagy Says:

    Doesn’t mean anything.

  32. Adrnagy Says:

Bucs = to shaq agent , let’s talk about a long term deal …
shaq agent = sure , let’s start with $20m yr. 1st yr 30m at signing.
Bucs = ok , yikes ! let’s keep on talking

Joe going crazy hearing the news Bucs -Shaq Barrett have commenced talks on a long-term deal

  33. Ben Says:

Get it done! Need more restructures!!!

  34. Anonymous Says:

I know nothing, but I still expect Shaq will stay in Tampa for less than market value. Not drastically less, but less, none the less. He’s not stupid. If you cash that check and you’re on a 4-12 team, it sucks going to work.

  35. Joe in Michigan Says:

Adrnagy: Are you secretly a Saints fan?

  36. Ben Says:

Shaq should get paid. Look at it this way Dupree who should also get paid decent coin managed 8 sacks this year while playing with Watt. Could have had a couple more if his season didn’t end with injury. Shaq managed 8 sacks without Vea. With Vea, he put up 19.5 last year. Shaq still by far best available Edge and I dont get why ppl think his production hinges on Vea. I’d say Shaq can still produce without Vea, but will challenge as sack leader with Vea.

  37. Jerry Says:

Ian Rapoport reporting Lavonte David is resigned.

  38. PassingThru Says:

    Lavonte David has been re-signed.

    Two years, $25 million

  39. Joe in Michigan Says:

Nice, getting Lavonte signed! The plan is coming together!

  40. cmurda Says:

LVD back in the hizzy. Woop woop!

  41. Jeagan1999 Says:

SiriusXM reporting LVD signed fir 2 more years.

  42. Bird Says:

    What

    Lvd back. Oooohhhhh yah

  43. Steven007 Says:

If that’s true about David, that’s a great signing for that price.

  44. K2 Says:

    David is back!

  45. Jerry Says:

David and Godwin will be back. Two who many thought would be the odd men out.

  46. Bird Says:

The Bucs are re-signing Lavonte David to a two-year deal worth $25 million, with $20 million guaranteed, per source.

That is a deal. And puts him at 33 at end. Just right

  47. Swampbuc Says:

I can’t find anything about LVD re-signing. Link?

  48. Swampbuc Says:

Nevermind, just saw it. Bravo bravo!

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

FYI……..Signing Bonuses can be spread over a maximum of 5 years…..

  50. Swampbuc Says:

    Get-r-done Licht!!!!!!!!!

  51. Durango 95 Says:

Van Halen’s first album cranked up to 11 and a case of ice cold Bromosa at the ready.

  52. Adrnagy Says:

    Born and die a Buccaneer
    Since before you was born.

What about you … you a lions fan?

    Joe in Michigan Says:

Adrnagy: Are you secretly a Saints fan?

  53. Wesley Says:

If we somehow resign him, we’re almost certainly losing just about every other free agent we have.

  54. Allbuccedup Says:

I don’t know where all this moneys coming from but its not my problem but I like it so far. If they can sign Shaq thats great, if not 2 out of 3 ain’t bad to quote an old meatloaf song.

  55. DaBux Says:

If this happens, I will personally refill Jason Licht’s beer cooler with all the Bud Light he wants.

  56. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Ok so isn’t making the cut??

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I get Shaq’s position. He earned getting paid multiple times, here and elsewhere. He deserves to get it.

That said, if he wants to go into the HoF, he’d better stick around Tampa.

  58. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Wesley Says
“If we somehow resign him, we’re almost certainly losing just about every other free agent we have.”

    Nope.

  59. BoricuaBucFan4life Says:

Shaq will get a fat signing bonus to stay with us ,Glazer will cough up the upfront loot so Licht will have enough wiggle room to sign our other players. Godwin tag was smart as it gives them 2022 to sign him Long term when the cap goes up. We are already seeing the effects of this as we just resigned LVD. Suh and Gronk will be next. Go Bucs

  60. SlyPirate Says:

I liked bucfanforever concept. That’s gotta be close to what we’ll see.

Shaq doesn’t leave the building without a deal.

The only dark horse is his Agent, Rosenhaus.

  61. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

AC/DC loving GM (as I’m also a huge fan of that band) JL is going going to work mic to keep this “Bucs Band” together for another run at that silver Trophy . LVD and CG are already on board and signed . NOBODY’S going ANYWHERE because they want another ring. and KNOW that the chance of having that with any other team will be minimal in 2021 . I think they all want that ring more than a few extra $$$ .

  62. Ericb Says:

Keep shaq but dont break the bank also get A Jones!!! He would he a great addition or james white..also malcolm butler is cut and is a good CB i would snag him ..Jones would completley make this offense scary I believe. James white would be alot cheaper so I would go with him if Lenny stays…if lenny goes def go out for A Jones

  63. MadMax Says:

Its gonna cost too much…we cant afford him unless he’s willing to be friendly…thats just the bottom line. But I’ll pray and hope it happens.

  64. MarkR Says:

I would keep both Godwin & Brown and trade Evans (& his salary) for high OL & DL draft picks.

  65. Darin Says:

It’ll be short term if it happens. Nobody will get a deal past Brady’s three years. And geez you armchair GMs would’ve had this team in the gutter years ago with those numbers.

  66. Swampbuc Says:

MarkR — put down the crack pipe. That may be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

  67. Dan Williamson Says:

Believe me. They have already agreed on a deal with Shaq and are just dotting i’s and crossing t’s before they announce.
