March 9th, 2021

Re-signed.

UPDATED 5:16 p.m. – Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has been busy today. The latest includes inside linebacker Lavonte David returning to the team.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has the details.

Now how about Shaq Barrett? The Bucs bring him back tonight, Joe will likely be found at Big Storm Brewing in celebration!

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, per ProFootballTalk.com, added that David got a a five-year deal with “three voidable years” to allow the cap hit to be just $3.5 million in 2021.

How bout that! Lavonte David may end up being a Buccaneer for life!

  1. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

Thank you Bucs! I thought he’d be the odd man out & we’d draft his replacement at pick #32

  2. Armybucsfan Says:

    Thank god!

  3. BucsFan4Life Says:

    THANK YOU!!!!!

  4. Steven007 Says:

We may still draft his replacement as it’s only a 2-year deal, but this is a big win all around. Nice guaranteed money and of course we get him for 2 more years.

  5. Swampbuc Says:

    I’m getting drunk tonight.

  6. Adrnagy Says:

    Yes. Yes. yes.

    1-Godwin
    2-David
    3- suh

  7. Ben Says:

Nice!!! Scrap everything I just said regarding kj Wright if David doesn’t return. I guess that means more restructures will need to happen to resign Shaq. If it ain’t broke why try and fix it. This is a championship defense, why not pay these guys knowing the reward is another superbowl. I’m sure we wouldnt think twice if we knew last year it would result in a superbowl. Why are we even blinking? LFG!!!

  8. Bird Says:

    Thats a home town discount

In guaranteed its technically 10 per although he will be on team for both

    Think about it too
When lavonte ‘s contract done that will be offseason of devin white between year 4 and 5 where they can and will offer whites big deal (barring injuries or he jumps off a cliff)

White said he wanted to be 100 million dollar man
Glad lvd can stay with his only team and his boy and retire a buc

  9. Swampbuc Says:

They’re telling the team that even though all these high impact free agents have come in, loyalty to the drafted players matters and is strong .

  10. BuccaneerButters Says:

    Let’s GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

PFT claims only a $3.5mil cap hit in 2021 with the way the contract is structured!

  12. Adrnagy Says:

    # 1 priority on offense Godwin.
#1 priority on defense. The heart. David.

  13. Drunkinybor Says:

    Yes!!!!! Great Great News!!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Godwin & LVD are our own…..we take care of our own…..

If we resign Godwin, Shaq & LVD…..all of the big pieces are done….but what about all the others?……maybe them too!!!

    It’s Christmas!!!

  15. AlV Says:

That is a bargain deal. We may be keeping Shaq after all.

  16. Dew Says:

Only a $3.5M Cap hit this year. Crazy

  17. Davenport Says:

    Wow!! Didn’t see that coming.
With a low 2021 cap number, there’s room for Shaq and Suh.

  18. windbaggery Says:

So relieved. I couldn’t imagine seeing him go elsewhere.

  19. Capt Kidd Says:

LVD was my biggest worry. There aren’t too many LBers that can contain Kelce like he did in the SB.

  20. Mitch Says:

    YESSSSSSS!!!!!

  21. D-Rome Says:

Great news! Second greatest linebacker in Bucs history behind Brooks.

  22. DaBux Says:

    LFG!

    Oh, Hell, Yeah!

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Where did that $3.5 mil cap hit in 21 come from…..that doesn’t seem possible.

  24. buc15 Says:

    Yes Sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

Boom!!!! Now let’s get Shaq, Suh back. Add some youth upfront through the draft!

  26. buc15 Says:

    Licht working magic

  27. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Great to keep David and White together terrorizing opposing offenses. Now let’s get Shaq!

  28. adam from ny Says:

    nice…

and lavonte hooked the bucs up…

he coulda scored a 3 year 40 mil deal out there in unknown territory…

the loyalty will pay off in the long run for lvd…

if he gets thru the 2 years nicely, he will prolly finish out on a year to year thing here in tampa after that…and be a buc for life…very solid!

  29. ClodHopper Says:

    Well done, guys!!

  30. Dew Says:

Mike Garafolo, also of NFL Media, reports David’s contract is structured as a five-year deal with three voidable years to keep the linebacker’s cap number at $3.5 million in 2021.

  31. rrsrq Says:

What Devin White wants, Devin White gets

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

See? A flurry of deals. Just like I said.

  33. adam from ny Says:

shaq’s gonna have to look at what other guys are getting around here, and come in at closer to 15 mil per year, than 20 mil per year…

shaq can pack at 20 mil a year…

    #GitErrDunLichtAndGreenberg

  34. buc15 Says:

So in this draft, lets get:

Future QB to study under Brady
    David’s future replacement
    Another explosive RB
    Another pass rusher

  35. Sesteprenelicus Says:

Wow! Very glad to hear he’s going to stay a Buc.

  36. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

2 of the big 3 in the fold. Let’s get the Shaq deal done and go grab another trophy! Boat parade anyone?

  37. NotTampaTom Says:

    eso!

  38. Adrnagy Says:

Joe , how do you feel ? Your boy Shaq is falling down the list …. I thought he was supposed to be #1 priority.

  39. Mike28277 Says:

Deserves to retire as one of the all time great Bucs!

  40. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Yay! Two down.

  41. Jerry Says:

Bucs are betting on a huge salary cap jump after this year these contracts. Hopefully things start to get back to normal.

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“cap hit to be just $3.5 million in 2021”

    And that’s how we’ll re-sign Shaq.

  43. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Jerry Says
“Bucs are betting on a huge salary cap jump after this year these contracts.”

It’s really not all that much. Conside that he was getting $8m per year before. It’s only a $2m/year increase for two years.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    adam from ny Says
“shaq can pack at 20 mil a year…”

I doubt he’ll get it anyway if he stays, but so what if he does? You guys are forgetting how much is being trimmed off the cap this year.

  45. AMI_Chris Says:

That’s awesome! Congrats to him — and to us Bucs fans!!

  46. Dewey Selmon Says:

Nailed my prediction from the the last thread. I called a 2 year with them ripping it up next year.

  47. Casual Observer Says:

Great news! The band is almost all back together.

  48. Winny Testaverde Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai Says:
    March 9th, 2021 at 5:12 pm
See? A flurry of deals. Just like I said

You also said the Bucs should trade for Carson Wentz…so easy fella. This isn’t Dungeons & Dragons where fantasy is the name of the game. But good prognostication nonetheless!

  49. Will Says:

    GREAT NEWS!

  50. Anonymous Says:

Hell yes…bring back the defense..best linebacker Duo in the league David and White..Go Bucs

  51. Alaskabuc Says:

Good job JL, that was a must. Next up Shaq, big Suh and Succop!

  52. Marine Buc Says:

Awesome news. LVD deserves the respect and I hope he retires a Buc.

  53. Cobraboy Says:

Let it be known: March 9, 2021, has been a glorious day in the Kingdom of Buc.

  54. Hodad Says:

He did a five year deal with three voidable years, making his cap hit this year less then last. Creative Greenberg magic.

  55. Buc4evr Says:

Agreed Alaskabuc, we need Shaq, Suh, and Succop. Then Gronk and AB.

  56. MDFree Says:

Mike Garaffolo reported that its actually a 5 year deal with 3 potential voidable years and a cap hit of only 3.5 mil in 2021!

  57. firethecannons Says:

LD54 and Devin White are the heart beat of our defense. They are not the swizzle stick that stirs the drink, they are the drink–glass, cubes and booze.

  58. SlyPirate Says:

    FIRE THE CANNONS!

    LFG!!!

    Props to Licht.

  59. Youngbucs Says:

We going for 2 then we going for 3!!!!!!!

  60. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Effing awesome!!!

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So,,,,,we five Shaq a 10 year deal with 7 “voidable” years and a $100 cap hit for 21.

  62. SOEbuc Says:

F#CK YEAH!!! My one and two in the same day. EXTREME WEIGHT LIFTED! Now let’s get down to biniz.

  63. geno711 Says:

Bucs signed 4 more guys as well.
    All exclusive right free agents.

    TE Tanner Hudson
    DL Jeremiah Ledbetter
    DL Pat O’Conner
    LS Zach Triner

  64. Mr. B Says:

Thank God ! Love this guy. He compliments White well and they are the best tandem in the league. It’s great to keep our home grown guys in tact. Godwin’s also a great move. These are also good guys off the field which makes them even more valuable in my opinion.

  65. Dew Says:

I read somewhere Brady is constructing his deal to reduce his cap hit by a lot also. We will be looking to sign some great veterans to add depth. All in.

  66. Joe in Michigan Says:

I hope all of the meat whistles that said over and over, to the point of nauseam, that Godwin WAS GONE and Lavonte WAS GONE will learn from this.

  67. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Brady….5….30…..30….30……wouldn’t that be nice!!!

  68. Capt.Tim Says:

    Fantastic News!!!
I would love to see David retire a Buc!
Now if the can sign Shaq. They’ve got Godwin!
    Great news !!!
Now- I hope we can keep the rest of the Band Together!

  69. Oneilbuc Says:

    Yes Yes !!!!!!

  70. Buczilla Says:

    Awesome day so far!

  71. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Shaq isn’t signed yet…..I’m hopeful, but let’s see…

Use of voidable years can get expensive later…..but who cares now…..it seems to be the year of spending!!!

  72. mark2001 Says:

Big day for the Bucs…two out of the big three, with more to come. And LD…a class act and leader in the fold. So happy to see this happen.

  73. Rayjay1122 Says:

Keep it going. Great job Licht!

  74. BucDan Says:

Man if every other team in the league isn’t already spending resources to study the Bucs contract structures and salary cap capabilities…. they are just going to keep being left in the dust on contract and team building.

    Go Bucs!

  75. Rod Munch Says:

Awesome – and I’m glad to see they’re using that cap space correctly. Godwin back, David back, there’s no reason the Bucs can’t bring everyone they want back when they got (before this deal) $150m in cap space next year, which will likely be $170m once the new TV deal is done.

  76. lambchop Says:

Greenberg is a master at structuring deals. Gotta lock him up too!

  77. Leighroy Says:

Trying to figure this out: 3.5 cap hit for 2021, 25 for the next 2 years w 20 guaranteed.

So maybe a 2021 salary of 1.5 mil, 10 mil signing bonus (spread over 5 years means 2 mil pro-rated, and a 2022 salary of 13.5 w cap hit of 15.5. That cap better jump nicely next year if my math is even remotely in the ballpark of correct!

  78. SC. Bucs Fan Says:

I’m buying a David jersey tonight to show my support. He has my respect.

  79. Coburn Says:

I’m hoping with Brady and David (also Evans mentioned taking a cut after sb?) That others will take after their example. Those 3 guys are all leaders and walking the walk of trying to be team players

  80. ManzielMadness Says:

Licht using the Saints tricks against them. I like it. Hopefully we can keep Shaq and Suh!

  81. Rod Munch Says:

Shaq, on the open market, will likely get max around $20m – which is what he wants from the Bucs anyways. So assuming there isn’t any bad blood and Shaq wants back, the Bucs might let him go to FA to see if he really does get those $20m offers, and if so, they just match the total contract value (creatively on the yearly impact, but same amount of cash).

Or they just get the deal done, doing something like with David, where you end up with a low first year number, and then use that $150m next year, and $170m the year after that, to spread out the hit.

  82. SB : Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

JASON LICHT IS THE GM OF THE DECADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  83. All lives matter Says:

great news! ..gotta keep your home growns! WTG Lavonte!!

  84. ArmchairGM Says:

Major props to Licht and Greenberg. The cap wizardry is on full display. Mike Greenberg might be the biggest loss after next season if he becomes a GM elsewhere.

  85. MadMax Says:

Thats right, told ya!..and thats creative as he!! the way it was done…both parties are happy. We’re chasing back to back SB’s….watch and learn future GM’s 😉

  86. Jbeachbuc Says:

Pro bowl snub my ass.. I’m going into the Ring Of Honor.. right next to DB 55!

  87. David Says:

So happy! (to be wrong, I thought he was going to walk)
    Godwin & LVD are back!

That tells me Shaq is probably not going to be affordable 😢

Re-sign SUH and Gronk and Roches and Minter and everyone else possible
    Then draft edge rusher‘s!
The silver lining is that this draft has a lot of edge rushers.
With Gholston, Suh, Vea, & JPP, a rookie should be able to excel if he is any good.

Of course I’m hoping they can figure out a way to resign Shaq Barrett but, even with Brady extending, possibly cutting a TE, and even if they renegotiate Donovan Smith… I don’t see how they can afford it unless someone is willing to make nothing this year and backend the hell out of it

  88. David Says:

    Ok ^^^^^^
I just typed that without reading the details!!

Brilliant!! With the new TV contracts coming in and fans coming back, they won’t have to void anything and he is a Buc for life!!

    NOW SIGN SHAQ
    Then Suh
    Then Gronk

  89. Skull&Dagger Says:

Keeping the home grown Bucs together! Yes! David is almost a lock for a Hall of Famee.. and perhaps Godwin one day too. Wrap up Shaq… resign our kicker and let’s go

  90. Skull&Dagger Says:

And another thing….get us Fournette back too and overlook that extra E on Fame…

  91. Blue coffe Says:

YES!! My favorite BUCS! David is back! You hou!

He is the center of how def. Incredible. Until now we have the best GM of the entire NFL. We will see if he can get Succup, AB and Gronk. Shaq if possible, but Shaq is so damn good,… he will cost just too much, I am afraid. If our GM can keep Shaq also, he will deserved a trophy for sure. Keep the good work! And if we have Shaq,… I dream,…

It’s so exciting. We are seeing live the constitution of the perfect team. What about 17-0? Sound good to me! Well,… it’s a little too early for that. Ha, ha. Just win the next SB will suffice,… (I decided to be optimistic today)

    Go BUCS!

  92. Skull&Dagger Says:

Keeping our home grown Bucs together! David is almost a Hall of Fame Lock. In 10 years Godwin may be too. Now just sign Shaq, Fournette, and Succup… and let’s go!

  93. TOM Says:

Lets hear it for Mr. Greenberg

  94. firethecannons Says:

well done Bucs Greenberg! Find a way–this dude is critical!

  95. Bucanero Says:

Hopefully they extend CG too. This was a good day @1Buc

  96. MadMax Says:

Licht, Greenburg…Arians, Bowles, Leftwich, Brady …all heavily involved…im just happy we still have LD54 baby…thank you Glazers 🙂

  97. Bucsfanman Says:

Nice! Still some work to do though. Keep it going Bucs. Keep the Lombardi in Tampa Bay for years to come.

  98. daniel Da Man Says:

Ok now bring on 2021 new season . We b ready ready really soon, just a couple more to sign. Go BUCCANEERS.

  99. Jim Says:

Warms my heart. Something special about keeping home grown guys.

  100. Die Hard Says:

    Great News!!!

  101. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

Keeping 54 is a recipe for winning. You saw that Super Bowl. You’ve seen his career. Put that man’s statue up already. Dude is in the conversation with any Buc that ever was.
