Unpaid Bucs Coach

February 3rd, 2021

Props to dad.

Either some guy up in the Minneapolis area is looking for a coaching gig in the NFL or deserves a check from Team Glazer.

In his media session today in advance of Super Bowl LV, Bucs rookie safety Antoine Winfield, Jr. shared how much he works with his father, former long-time NFL corner Antoine Winfield.

It had been known for some time that the two, tight as can be, form a duo. Winfield, Sr. often helps his son with any advice he can think of. Winfield, Jr. makes sure to regularly brainstorm with his pop.

“My dad is like another coach,” Winfield said. “It’s like having an extra [position] meeting, only at home. We go over first down, second down, third down, going over different situations and how I am going to play those situations based on who we are playing.

“We get in at least an hour a day of film together. Just staying at home and he’s giving me tips and clues on what I can do to play better on different looks.”

And Winfield, Sr., despite playing 9 of his final 14 NFL seasons with the Vikings, is all in on the Bucs’ ride to immortality watching his son.

“He’s been a huge part of my success to be able to play at a high level,” Winfield said.

Joe thought it was cool that Winfield said the very first phone call he got after the Bucs beat the Packers in the NFC Championship game was his dad. He was screaming and cheering as much as his son was, giddy over his son’s (first?) trip to the Super Bowl, an honor the elder Winfield never experienced.

Joe doesn’t think there is any question that Winfield was NFL-educated before he reached the NFL, thanks to his dad.

One day and if he isn’t already I think this kid will be a fan favorite. I will admit that I wanted Dobbins in round 2 and was skeptical about Winfield but this cat can BALL and I’m so happy I look like an idiot right now

  2. Bird Says:

    Cool story

His pops could play for sure.
Now he gets to live super bowl experience thru his son

  3. OBF Says:

Pops got the best of two worlds, gets to coach without all those gawd awful hours, unless he really wants a coaching gig Whatever it has to be a unimaginable feeling watching your son grow into such a successful football player! and now on the verge of starting in a Super Bowl as a rookie

I’m excited for Winfield Jr. having that relationship with his Father……sort of causes me to lament about all those who don’t have Fathers in their lives….having a loving, dedicated Mom is great….but every kid needs a good Father.

Great story and a great young player.
    Great pick JL!

  6. Darin Says:

Liked watching his dad play too. Great player. Unpaid Bucs coach? I would assume Glazers have said anymore coaches must be unpaid!! Glad they paid Tommy to coach! Start faster this time please boys!

  8. TampaTown Says:

I think this is the best and most under reported story in the NFL this year. Joe – is it possible for you to get an interview with Mr Winfield Sr? I would love that

  9. SB Says:

As a father of a kid who is the best player on his school team, I can hardly imagine what Antoine Winfield Senior is going through. A complete and total dream come true

  10. TampaTown Says:

SB: I saw you posted the other day you had 4 feet of snow in your yard. May I ask where you live? It’s funny I always assume most live in the Tampa area I guess because I do, around four miles north of the stadium in what would be considered Carrollwood.

  11. OBF Says:

“Best kid in school “ .
I have seen some amazing youth athletes and at each step up pre HS-HS-college it gets tougher and tougher as the best from other areas come together and the once best is now just average to above average. The point is that Winfield has moved up each level and still remained among the best, and that is not even factoring great talent that as a result of injury disappear forever!

    Those hoods are so badass.

  13. Clw JB Says:

his mental game will only get better and better, may end up as the best value pick we have ever made -absolutely love his game, thanks Dad!!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    SB lives in Montana…

& SB…..I hope your kid who’s the best on his team isn’t one of those who are now permitted to play on the girl’s team…..Realizing you hunt & fish with him….I doubt it.

“Dad, this game is soooooo easy, I don’t get how you never made it to the Super Bowl. You just need to work hard, stay healthy, and have Tom Brady as your QB.”

  16. SOEbuc Says:

If we need a new secondary coach, I’ll take pops.

  17. mg Says:

Fun to watch this kid hit.

And to think I wanted Dobbins or Akers with that pick. That’s why Alvin will be drinking beers, vaping and commenting on JBF during the game.

Lol TBBF. No we are a small town and they play 8 man football.
He plays LB/DE on Defense. TE on Offense and Gunner on ST.
He never comes off the field unless he asks for a break.
He had 28 sacks in Games this past yr. Scored 18 TDs too.
We have already been contacted by MSU for a football scholarship and he is only 13!
I live in West Yellowstone Montana @Tampa Town

Joe – is it possible for you to get an interview with Mr Winfield Sr? I would love that

Possibly. Would have to make some calls. Might be something to do in the offseason.

  27. BucEmUp Says:

Another stud pick by Licht. This defense has some stars.Need to draft a top tier DE

  28. David Says:

He’s been great. Him and Whitehead should be the safety duo for a long time. Love both of them and the way they play.
They’ve had a few too many lapses this year getting beat over the top but I expect that to end with experience.
I also expect Winfield to have more INT ‘s because he was a ball hawk in college
(maybe one in the Super Bowl?)

  29. Buczilla Says:

    Too cool.

  30. adam from ny Says:

hella draft picks seem to be working out well…

    way to go mr. licht…

and props to big poppa winfield…

if we didn’t have a super deep receiving corp, can you imagine the numbers tyler johnson potentially could have added to his total…

our draft would be the best in the league…

    wirfs
    winfield
    johnson

it was a damn good draft
